We have a 6 year old female who is shedding in clumps. Can we do anything to slow this down? She is inside for the summer (air conditioned) and has doesn't want to go out in the heat.

You can get her coat trimmed but their coats provide a barrier from the heat so just be careful that she doesn't over heat. And If you don't currently give her a daily vitamin that may be something you might want to look into. This can help with the extra shedding.

What about getting her coat cut short at a groomers?

Hi, I have a 3 yr old Alaskan Malamute which we rescued. We would now like a Rotti Puppy, but she is agressive when she meets other dogs. Is it better to have a puppy or she we just forget the whole idea. I have a big garden.

Some malamutes tend to be aggressive if they haven't had a lot of exposure to other dogs as a puppy. But in most cases female malamutes will tolerate puppies. She may not like it for the first few days but she should learn to adjust. She will for sure boss the new puppy around but I don't believe she will hurt it.Now if you had a male malamute that would be a different story all together.

get the puppy. take the time to introduce your mal with plenty of breaks. have a specific area(s) for both the mal and the pup. my mal and my kitten are best friends. She also loves our friends female dog.it will be harder to make it work with an older dog, but it can be done with discipline, time and love. the dog mainly needs to know that you are boss and the new pup is also a pack member. with our mal i have found that a squirt bottle, along with verbal commands does wonders.

What will help keep my mals in the yard? My fences do not deter them and I am considering a hot wire. Any other alternatives?

dont use a hot wire that will only scare and hurt your mal, my mal digs ujnder my fence so we put he on a chain that linked him from one side of the yard to another then we let him off and he didnt notice the difference but it took some time to teach him the chain was were he was to be and now he is staying in the yard

Im from india and i wanna know can alaskan malamute stay or survive the atmosphere of india and if i give them ac?

which is smarter the malamute or the huskie?

The Malamute is smarter just from experience and very easy to train if you start when the are puppys. My malamute is 17 weeks ole and weighs 30 lbs she was very easy to train in spite of what I was told about them orior to getting her. Scarlet my malamute is a digger and I don not have a under groung fence. I have been working very hard with her and redirecting her seems to work for now, but I do have to give the dog whisper alot of credit most of what I learned about training was from watching his show and appling it to her.

i have always wanted a Alaskan Malamute, but I live in Puerto Rico, is an tropical island. I do have a large yard. and lost of trees. What should I do ?

I want an Alaskan Malamute, but I have a few cats and another dog, a German Shepherd, and a friend told me that Malamutes will chase after smaller animals and cats, and kill them. Is this true, or just a myth?

I have a giant malamute (rescue, slightly underweight right now at 115 lbs.) and there is NO WAY I would trust her around small animals. She is mellow for a malamute in every other way, is fantastic with people of all sorts but has a very strong prey drive. Each malamute is different and should be evaluated individually on wehther they can be trustworthy around small animals. For my dog, nope -- although she's great for chasing the raccoons out of our yard.

wow, I have a rabbit that my malamute plays with and a 2 year old blue heeler she has been aroung the rabbit since I brought her home at 6 weeks

I got a malamute and 2 kittens. Our dog lets them crawl all over him and they even chase his tail. He just chases them but never harms them.

I have an Alaskan Malamute - Wolf mix, and he chased my cats for about a week after we adopted him, however, after a little training and supervised time indoors with the cats he learned to leave them alone. He also ignores my neighbors chickens.

usually if theyve been brought up with cats and small animals you should be fine ihave a pure bred alaskan malamute and a cat and they get on just fine.

yes malamute will kill and kill cats and orther pets and are seankie

We have two malamutes and also 2 cats. the dogs love to sniff the cats but actully the dogs cower to our one cat, he is the boss cat. I think this is due to the fact that we had the cat first and then introduced the dogs as puppies so they have grown up together. I am sure it depends on the dog. Our malamutes do kill and eat squirles though.

I have alaskan malamute wolf mix puppies that are 7 months old. I keep them outside in a very large pen, but with winter coming, what is the lowest tempature they can withstand before I need to bring them indoors at night?

i have a full grown alaskan malamute and she would probably be fine in that situation living outside but i think puppies need to be brought inside or have something to keep warm.

What is the difference between the siberian huskie and the malamute?

Huskies were bred mainly for racing purposes and are not particularly good family pets, whereas a malamute is fantastic as a family pet.

Malamutes are bigger stronger and gentler. Huskies are very skinny and delicate compared to these giant dogs.

I have read that Siberian Huskies cannot be trusted off the lead as they may just keep running. However in all the articles I have trawled through this is not mentioned with Malamutes. Will a Malamute return if let off the lead?

Neither will if you train them right and accept them as members of the pack. However, they need to know they can trust you because both breeds are known to be wary and very hesitant.

i have a 2 year old siberian husky and alaskan malamute. I often have both of them off a leash. They have never run off on me. As a matter of fact they run along with my snowmobile much like a pack. I also have them trained to stay on an open porch, on a residential street, with or without me.

I really like this breed and I was thinking about getting one. I live in a tropical country however, Jamaica. Is this climate too hot for the dog?

I've had mine for about 8 years and I live in North Texas. I let him come and go in and out of the house as he pleases. Obviously he stays out when the temps reach 30-40 in the winter months. Summers he stays inside.

Yes, it's too hot for a Malamute and any other Arctic dog. You know it or you wouldn't ask the question. Either choose a more sensible dog type for Jamaica, or move home to a more northerly location before you get your Nordic dog, if that's what you realy want.By the way, most believe they aren't a good "first dog." Learn with some other breed first.

If you want a great inside dog and are willing to have him groomed (short cut) and run an air conditioner, he should be okay. Otherwise, I would get a dog more suited to the hotter weather.

I personally don't recommend it at all. you will have lots of trouble and you will have much more enjoyment of getting a different type of dog, I suggest a labrador retriever, if you like big dogs.

People do say they do need the cold weather, well that doesnt mean they cant live in humid climate. so i say it is ok but just make sure your Malamute has some coolness in his life. i suggest turning on your air conditioner inside your house and letting your Malamute come inside. do watch him though just in case. Do make sure they have anough space, they need a lot of space!!!!

If you do get one be sure to give the dog the proper vitamins. I live in South Carolina in an area of 100% humidity in the summer and my golden retriever had very bad liver problems that could have been solved earlier if I had known which specific vitamins to give him. The summers will be tough....depends if you will keep the dog inside or outside during the day.

They would be okay, just keep an eye on your dog, and make sure you know what to do if it over-heats!

No, they won't do good. As you see in the pic above, this breed thrives in cold weather. Try getting a retriever instead.
