My American Bulldog is about 8 months old and he has recently started throwing up after he drinks water. He does not do it every time he drinks, but it is pretty frequent and especially if he is running around playing. What causes this and are there any ways to prevent it?

My pit bull does the same thing regarding drinking water and then throwing it back up. I figured out that occurs when I give them too much water; they just drink the whole bowl in one sitting. Subsequently, they end up throwing it up. I have since given them less portions of water but more frequently each day and this has solved the problem. Just don't give your AB too much water at a time and that problem will be solved.

We took my AB out of town one weekend where he had to spend the night outside. When we brought him back home he had scabby bumps all over his head and face. They left ugly scars where the hair no longer grows. Now we recently got a female AB and she stays in our house and only goes outside to potty or play and she has now got the same scabby bumps all over her face and head. Both of them are on flea and tick med. Does anyone know what it could be?

more than likely to be a grass alergy

My boyfriend has a 14 month old AB that I am constantly around. He is always trying to bite toes, jump, and wants to be pet but nips on your hands as you try to. At this point, he weighs about the same as I do and he attacks (playfully but agressively) me everytime I am alone with him. He is way too large for me and I am not able to do anything alone with him without him jumping on me relentlessly. He knows the basic commands such as sit, shake, lay, but is stubborn and obeys when he feels like it. He is much better with my boyfriend, but jumps on any new person(especially female) even when you turn your back and ignore him. What are the best ways to get him to stop jumping, lunging, and biting?

ABs stay in puppy hood for a comparatively long time. This is why he is still nipping your hands when you pet him. One thing I found that worked with my ABs is when they are nipping, cup the dogs lower jaw with your fingers, and, with your thumb, put pressure to the part that is under his tongue. Not enough to hurt him, just enough to where they are uncomfortable. Just a word of caution, this may take several attempts at first, as they may think you are playing. Just reinforce your actions with words of discouragement. As for the jumping, if you have let the dog do this for a period of time, you will have to train him to know that this not acceptable. What I have done for this is to take a choke collar on a leash, when they jump give a quick, sharp snap downwards, again not enough to hurt the dog, basically just to get his attention, with a commanding "NO." Remember, these dogs are very smart and will learn appropriate behavior quickly

I have a 8 month old AB and about a week ago he decided that he only wanted to eat one time a day. He has been getting 2.5 cups per feeding twice a day. Now he only wants to eat at dinner time and not in the morning. Should I be worried? Or should I just give him 5 cups one time a day?

My youngest puppy who is 18 months was the same way. She is offered 2 1/2 in the morning she eats maybe 1 cup of it. then at dinner i add 2 1/2 cups and she will usually finish it. they are at a funny stage at that age where they grow in spurts instead of continuously. and the are growing bones so she may eat a lot grow then quit eating again. no worries. as long as she does eat.

I have a well behaved and fairly mellow 4 year old female AB. She spends a lot of time indoors with my husband and me. We currently have hardwood flooring which our AB has pretty much destroyed with her nails. I’m looking to change the flooring. I have had several flooring recommendations, but they are all from people with small or medium breed dogs. Any AB owners out there have any good flooring recommendations?

CARPET! Carpeting is the safest thing you can do. The dogs will not slide on it. It is easily cleaned. we wash our carpets twice a year as we have two AB's and are getting a third. The carpeting will also prevent sliding which they can bust a hip from, my littlest one broke her femur when she slid on linoleum after coming down the stairs. renting a rug doctor twice a year and putting in quality carpeting is the easiest and safest. spoken from experience.

My 6 month old American bulldog was hit by an "intruder" today, what affects will this have on my dog, and will it make him aggressive towards all people that try to enter my house? He was hit quite aggressively and wanted to attack the person after they did so. I'm afraid this may result in my dog becoming overly protective and aggressive, and would have to be destroyed if this is the result, i am concerned as I cherish my bulldog as if he were a member of my family. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

I think that at 6 months old, your dog should be fine should you re-socialize him/her. The dog needs to know that not all "intruders" are going to hit her. These dogs are EXTREMELY smart and will learn appropriate behavior quickly, but you need to do this asap. Just have various people, ie friends, family, neighbors, come over and greet you in a positive way. Just make sure, especially at first, that the dog is on a leash for you to control.

I have an AM bulldog puppy about 6 months old. He has so much energy it is insane, I take him for walks and let him run around outside. he will rest for a few minutes then be so excited to see me or anyone that it is like he is going to explode. He wants to climb all over me or anyone, I try to teach him not to jump on people, I cant seem to get him to listen to me about it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to listen better and calm down some???

I have 4 AB and find the best way to stop them jumping up is to
go down to there level to greet them
once they are calm good luck

I have found success with my AB by simply crossing my arms across my chest and turning my back to him. Now he runs right past me!

just be patient and CONSISTANT.no matter the reaction you get from other people.you may need to ask others not to show any affection to the dog unless he calms first. you really have to be very clear and mean what you say to the dog. dog needs to learn sit, down, etc.basic commands. he's only six months. the hard work you put in now will be well worth it.good luck!!

My american bully was the same way as a pup. I put a leash on her and when people would come over I would stand on the leash so that if she were to jump she would catch herself. It only took 2 times and she didnt jump anymore...still got excited but not the take you down jump.
Also take an obidence class...they love to work and please their handlers so just try to take a class and teach basic manners it goes a LONG way!

We just got our ab today. I know they are broad in the shoulder area, but he seems to be walking funny. Like his legs are too big for his body. Is this normal or should we have him checks. He is about 16 weeks old. Thanks for the help.

I had 2 AB's. I had a male and a female. The male was big he got to 125 lbs. When he was a pup his feet were so big that he did walk funny, he would drag his paws. He did outgrow that but if I were you I would get him checked out for shoulder and hip issues just in case. I will throw some bad news at you about mine. He did have an enlarged heart from birth and I didnt find out till I was already in love with him so I kept him. He was great until his 5th year. He started retaining alot of water in his abdomin. I did have to put him to sleep, that was the hardest thing I have ever done. They are the greatest dogs in the world for companions. Dont get more than one. they will fight especially if you feed them together. I would stick with the one until you feel him out a bit. excercise the heck out of them or have a nice size yard to let him or her romp.

Our 3 year old male ab was attacked by another dog about 6 months ago and has been very aggressive with all dogs since. Is there a way to break him of this?

I also have an AB and we had a similar problem. I took mine to several obedience classes and made sure she was socialized when she was a puppy. My dog was about 6 months old and I was walking her - we were surrounded by 3 pack dogs and she tried to defend me. The other dogs live across the street and one day she went over looking for them and stuck her head into their fenced area and they attacked her. She was pretty torn up, but ended up with just stitches. We built her a bigger sturdier fence to keep her in our yard and a boxer brother to keep her company. To this day three years later she still watches over there from her side of the fence looking for those dogs. I don't think you can ever get rid of that.

I'm thinking about getting an ab. Has anyone have an opinion on weather a female or male has better temperment or aggresion. Eather one would be fixed as it would only be for a pet....

I have owned 4 american bulldogs 2 males and 2 females and they are like people each different. All are loving some more than others, all will protect you some more than others, and all are hyper as puppies some more than others. LOL

I've never owned a male, but our female ab is just a big happy dog who loves to lean on you and loves to be leaned on. She's the most snuggling loving dog I've ever had. When she gets excited she kind of 'dances'. She was a terror as a puppy but has ended up being a pretty mellow adult at 3 years old.

we have a female and boy does she like to be close to you. if she can she will sit on me or lean against me all the time never leaves my side. Dont know about the male but Izzy is a great companion

I have 2 American bulldogs (male and female). I really can not tell you that there is a huge difference in temperments. Both would be lap dogs if they could and at 95lbs on the female and 120 on the male it is just not possible. If properly socialized as pups I do believe you will have a great dog no matter the sex.

We're going to be getting an AB female puppy soon... has anyone run into trouble with home owners insurance (in state of MA)?? I've read that potential problems with this breed

If you get it as a puppy, don't worry, just train them, they have to know you love them and they have to know who is boss. If you train them to be friendly, they will be. Do not use too much aggression on these dogs, or they will be agressive themselves. Akita's are extremely hazardous, but people still maintain them and train them from puppyhood. So, its all about you, if you're willing to train it. My puppy was shy, but I took him out and he interacted with dogs. He grew up to be an amazing friend. Now my relatives own him and his is their favorite. I neede a smaller companion, thats why i gave him away. He was a mixed, AB with pitbull.

Can a puppy AB's eyes change colors? (From dark to blue) And if so, around what age does it occur?

I Have 2 x Male border collies (one is nutered) plus a small Female toy pom and female Maltese poodle, both sterilized). I am llooking to get a Male American Bulldog. Will I have problems with the other males, and smaller dogs? I am aware that socializing is important, but will they start fighting when he reaches maturity, like I have been told a pitbull would?

I don't think you will have a problem as long as you socialize early. I have a 14 month old AB and he plays with my parents Min Pin. He is very careful not too hurt her because she is so much smaller.

i have a lovely female american bulldog (8 months) and wow....very high prey drive.especially small fast moving ceatures.i suppose it's possible if you socialize early. i would imagine this would be A LOT of work to say the least.depends on how devoted you are to socialize this breed.

Why do American Bulldogs eyes jiggle when they are sitting still?

Hello we are going to get an Ab puppy on the 25 th of june 2009 and I wanted to know if there was anything we needed to know about training so that we can have the perfect AB. I have already signed up for puppy classes but I want to make sure to do everything we can to have what I think is the perfect family pet.

This is a fast learning breed and is eager to please. So with clear consistant positive training this dog sounds like the perfect one for you. Use positive reinforcement only. Make sure you do your own research as I have found a lot of people who should know about most breeds (trainers, vets etc) don't seem to know much about this wonderful breed.

Socialize Socialize Socialize...we have an AB 7 month puppy...we bring her everywhere with us and she is the friendliest playful puppy...but we socialized her when she was young with all kinds of people and dogs of all sizes etc. They are a great breed.

MY ab is not eating regularly she was eating twice a day now she eats once a day if that what can I do to get her back eating regularly?

my AB was doing the same thing. So I just changed his food and everything was fine.

I have a AB female who is 11 months old. She was fully potty trained when we got her but after she got sick and came home from the vet she started potting in her kennel and in the house. so we started housebreaking again and its not working. We feed her at noon so eveything has time to go thru but as soon as we let her back inside she goes to the bathroom and at night she pottys in her kennel . we don't leave her in there for la long period of time and she still does it no matter what. I don't understand what is going on but i had to resort to putting her outside at night and when we leave the house i don't want her outside i want her to come inside during those times but because of the potty thing its hard to do that. This has been going on since she was 17 wks old and she has been outside for 2 months know and she hayes it and so do i. Please help.

Sounds like you have no choice but to leave her out side. Leaving the pup out is not a bad thing. And the pup might need a spanking once or twice dipping the face in the mess will teach them for life! They are testing you. I spanked mine twice and he never did it again. He is 4 months old. When I leave the house I never keep him inside especially in a cage or kennel. Mine would go nuts.
I have a great mix breed dog half German shepherd and pit as a father figure to my American bulldog. His temperament is so sweet that he taught him to be well behaved as a puppy. He actually mothered him and cleaned him. So I'm the pack leader and he plays with him.
Yours may be lonely and needs to run around in the yard when you gone at night keep her in your room next to your bed to watch her. And treat her like a dog not a person and she will be the best thing ever.

I had similar problems with my AB. They are norotiously hard to house break. Just be constistant. Reward the dog when she goes outside. Give her a treat. Also, make sure to give her enough time to go when you do take her out. If she keeps going in her pen she might have a parasite or be allergic to her food. Take her to your vet to make sure. Hope this helps and good luck.

I have a 5 yr old AB and she has developed a bunch of bumps all along her back that have turned into scabs. These seem to come and go and our vet keeps putting her on antibiotics.....which clears up the scabs but as soon as she gets off them they reappear in a few days. I am in desperate need of help opr suggestions on what to do.

My Ab had similar bumps. My Vet did an allergy test and he is allergic to beef, turkey, wheat and milk. I changed his food to Iams puppy and He has not had any more problems.

I don't know how long ago this question was posted. But what do the bumps look like? Our AB had bumps all over him and it turned out to be hives. It's rare but it does happen. All we did for ours was give him benedryl and the bumps went away.

my ab is 6 months old and we have been catching him eatting his own waste..why is that?

Our American Bulldog did the same thing and the vet told us it was because his food wasn't fully digested and he could still smell the food in his waste. Gross, I know, I think he's grown out of that stage though. He's now a year old and it was about 4 or five months ago when he finally stopped.

Try a better quality food. You can also try adding Pineapple to the food as it will make the waste taste bad.

What should an American Bulldog weight at 3months old?

I would say 20-30 pounds depending on the line. My male was 26 pounds at 3 months.

What time and place was the American bull dog originated, and what it was first bred for?

My AB has very bad gas, Is there a food that I should put him on to help with this? My vet told me try to cut the soy out of his diet, But all the dog food I see has soy.

natural balance dog food is good I been giving it to my dog also natures variety frozen raw food . and diamond dog food is also good and candide food. I hope your dog will like it

We own an AB who suffers from chronic infections? of the webs, and pads of the paws. He has been taken to many vets, and we have followed all of their advice. No one has gotten to the root cause of this problem. Please does anyone out there know what this is?

I would say the same thing allergy test and get good food.I stop giving my dog wheat soy and corn and the skin problem was goon...

my american male was getting skin infections. i had a allergy tets run on him and he is alergic to beef, turkey, wheat and milk. since i have placed him on the proper food he has not had any more problems

I have a freind who also has a sweet tempered male AB-My girl is awesome and has made a wonderful freinds with my two young children----SHE is beautiful. Would it be wise to breed them once to keep the pups between our two families as we are all about keeping them docile and properly trained to bring theyre reputations in higher grace or would it be better to stop as our luck is high and have them both fixed now without ever being bred. I do not want to cause any personal harm or disposition changes to our beautiful girl or our freinds loving male-someone with more experience with these dogs PLEASE HELP!

You are the first person I have heard that wants to breed for the right reason. Keeping the docile personality and temperament along with training is the reason 2 dogs are bred. Expect a slight change if you choose to breed. Make sure that the parents and the pups are all on appropriate food (email me @ 4pawstraining@gmail.com if you would like to know which ones I recommend) and not food that is just cheap. Read up and do a lot of research on breeding. Then you should be set. Also be sure all the papers are in order.

My husband has an AB and insists that her nails should be kept fairly long
He says they should be long for grip, has he been misinformed ?

He is misinformed. Any dog who's nails are kept longer could be in pain while getting them clipped. As the nail grows, the quick (blood vessel inside the nail) will grow longer into the tip of the nail. If they are kept shorter, the quick will recede into the nail and cause little problem. I recommend nail grinding. This will cause little pressure on the nail and decrease the amount of pain the dog is in. The nails should be short enough that the are a couple millimeters above the ground when the foot bears the dog's full weight.

I have a 8 month AB, Weighing in at 82 pounds. Im going to get him neutered. The vet has suggested that while he has the procedure that I should consider having his stomach stapled. They explained that large breed, large chested dogs are prone to stomach twist, which is a certain death. They are not sure weather AB are prone to it such as Great Danes etc.... Should I have this precedure done? Are AB known to have this promblem?

Yes they are prone to their stomach flipping and developing Bloat. It's a very expensive procedure so the choice is yours.

my american bulldog is nearly 3 years old, she is very lively and excited, and runs about like a headless chicken and doesnt listen to hardley anything you say to her. she lives outside and has the plenty of room to run about all day. any ideas on how to get her attention and calm her dowm more?

also american bulldogs are prone sometimes to deafness so be aware of this too. My sister's am bull was very disobedient also. And it took a lot of consistency when training her. As soon as she thought she could get away with something she would try. Dont let this happen or before you know it, your dog will be training you.

Try working with him using basic commands like "come here", "sit" and "lie down". When he obeys, immediately give him a treat such as the puppy peperoni treats. With these commands, your AB will learn how to gradually control his energy. If your AB continues to run around like a wild chicken, stand there until he sits and when he sits, give him a treat.

are AB'S easy to train to boundaries. we have an underground fence that was perfect for our boxer. we are now getting an AB

My AB is 8 months old. When I noticed how quickly he learned the SIT and LIE DOWN command I decided to sign him up for training class at PETSMART. Although is is a puppy (a calm puppy), he is an extremely fast learner. I reccomend teaching him basic commands like sit and lie down to see how quickly he learns at home.

My wife and I are interested in getting an AB, but want a breed that can run with her. She tends to run 3-6 miles at a time and are concerned that the AB is too heavy to keep up. We'd appreciate your help!

my sister's bull is a running lover! As a matter of fact, her boyfriend has such trouble keeping up, he bikes with him so he can retain SOME of his energy while excercising the dog! They love to run. And if you want them to be calm and happy in the house they will NEED this exercise to be even obediant!

the scott johnson hybrid which is still a ull purebred ab would be the best choice. It comes from the lineage of both the johnson and scott. You get the best of both worlds when looking for size, and agility.

How much dry kibble, Blue Buffalo lamb and rice, should I be feeding a 5 month old AB?

I have been reading a lot other sites and noticed that they have quite a few skin issues and bumps. Has any one come across this?? If so what did you do for a cure??

one thing my vet recommended was to put him on a bland diet. Chicken rice and cottege cheese, after no food for 24-36 hours. After you dog is on this diet for a couple days switch back to normal diet and if bumps continue he/she may be allergic to some food.

I had the same problem with my bully and I was feeding him solid gold foods from all types chicken, bison, lamb and he still had the problem until my friend down the street showed me her female pitbull that weighs a wopping 91 lbs. she told me to try kircklands signature chicken & vegtable formula which costs like half the price of solid gold. It does wonders he cleared up almost instant from all his hot spots, bumps and he doesn't scratch and chew himself anymore. My friend said she's been feeding her dog the same food for the last few years now and mine is doing great for the last few months he has none stop energy and reflexes like a cat.

My AB had a skin issue, little bumps all over her. I asked my vet and he said to buy a oatmeal shampoo and bathe her every so often. I did one thing extra and bought a conditioning spray also. Her skin cleared up in a couple weeks.

I have a 20 wk old fm, we feed her daily, but it does not show in her weight, is there anything wrong??

Right now what you are probably seeing is her leggy stage were it seems like the only thing growing is her legs. Dont worry they all go through it. my first AB didnt start to fill out until he was about 8 months.

I have a 4 1/2 month old female she is 42 lbs. I was worried she wasn't that big also, but the more I look she is just fine. She is filling out nicely and is happy. She eats plenty and gets tons of exercise she is all muscle we walk her 3 miles per day and she needs it. I agree if you are concerned check around and check with your vet.l

How much does your dog weigh? I have a male that is 4 1/2 months he is only 41 pounds. I was told by a breeder that this breed gets their size in the first year and their weight in their second year. If your vet isn't worried I wouldn't be either.

Can you please tell me what is a good kibble I can put my ab on. He's been eating raw and it's getting way to expensive .

We use Blue Buffalo, lamb and rice. It rates very high on the scale for dog food. The chicken and rice is great too. It is all natural 30lb bag cost about $42.00 at petsmart. It last our 3 to 4 weeks. You can go on there website for all nutrition values and were it available.

wat is the average weight of an 11 to 12 week old american bulldog puppy and height

I have a 15 week old and she is 27lbs, she was about 23 at 12 weeks . We have not checked how tall she is. Everyday she seems different, one day she is tall and the next wide. she is growing nicely. I love her muscle definition. We exercise her a lot. she walk about 2 to 3 miles a day. she loves to run and climb. we are going to look into agility.

What do you consider a good food for this breed, we have ours on Blue Buffalo and she is having a hard time adjusting to this food, she has been on it for a few weeks now. She was on Nutro from the breeder and I was told to switch it to Blue Buffalo from another breeder, I want to make sure she gets the best that I can provide

I have my 4 month old on Blue Buffalo, we had to switch her from chicken and rice to lamb and rice, she is fine and putting on lots of weight, 42lbs. great coat and beautiful muscle tone.

The dog food we cut into the treats is by Pet Botanics. The trainer calls it puppy crack. Our puppy seems to love it, we sprinkle it over his food when his is being stubborn and he eats it up.

We had our AB on Blue Buffalo and it made him very sick, it was too rich for him. We have switched to Natures Choice, easier on their stomach's. For training treats we use a dog food that comes in a summer sausage form, we just chop it up into small pieces and it lasts for 2 to 2 1/2 weeks.

I feed my American Bulldog food straight from the Vet...called Prescription ID...his stomach was to sensitive for anything else...
Treats for reward..try hotdogs...little pieces...he loves it and his stomach can handle it...

we have a 10 week old female, working on training her, does any one have suggestions for training treats for there extreme sensative stomaches??

Pet Botanics Training Reward Treats. They are a natural treat. My APBT loves them and has a sensitive stomach

I use the milkbone PUPPY treats for my ab. He loves them and does great with them.

Does AB have a bad reputation?

remember reputations mean nothing. Ive meet some very vicious poodles. And hear of some awful lasa apso attacks. Just because a dog looks mean, does not mean you must raise it that way. And just because a dog is small soft and cute, doesnt mean its naturally nice. Raise you dog of the exact saying of treat others the way you would want to be treated and you dog, no matter what the breed, will be a good friendly dog. Its also important to socialize your dog with both people and other dogs and lots of them. The more they get used to both the friendlier they will be!

American bulldogs are associated with a bad reputation because of how similar they are with Pitbulls. I own my first American Bulldog right now and must say, he is the sweetest dog that I have ever had. Great with children, protective of his family and very loyal as well. I have also owned Pitbulls in the past and they are the same exact way. If you ask me, any dog can have a bad reputation based on how the owner has trained them.

I have a American Bulldog that is 5 weeks old, I have not gone to pick him up yet cause he is still to young. I wanted to know what is the Average weight for puppys ranging from 1 week - 10 weeks?

Our female had her lst litter and the last puppy is going to its new home today. Grunt (puppy) weighs 18 lbs. at 9 weeks. Female in litter weighs in at 15.6 at 9 weeks.

i have a 7 wk old puppy and he loves to bite. how can i get him to stop. has lots of toys and i exercise and play with him alot. help?

My AB responded really well when we sqealed like a injured littermate when she got too mouthy. She learned how hard to bite as not to hurt incase she ever needs it in real life. We now have a 4 lb dog that steps over his limits once in a while and our Bella knows just how much to warn him with out hurting him.

I realize the squirt bottle seems "mean" but you dilute the lemon jucie (less than 1/4 cup and the rest of the bottle with water.)
I have a 1 1/2 year old American bulldog, who is wonderful but he greatly enjoyed using our fingers, hands and toes as chew toys. We tried the positive training and putting the toy in his mouth and prasising him, he is a stuborned love. The lemon juice doesnt cause pain, but it does shock them and it does work

I would use a toy as a 'replacement', not a squirt bottle with something foul. Do you really want your dog to associate you with pain and discomfort? Bulldogs do best with positive training, not harsh corrections.

A squirt bottle and some lime juice should do the trick.

what I did with Zoey, was push a toy in her mouth every time we came home, and praise her for having a toy. She caught on. She is almost 5 and still greets us with a toy in her mouth, we still praise her. She used to hit us with her teeth, in her happiness.

Can the american bulldog be in a cold climate?

yes they can because my sisters stayed in it while having pups!

Their fur is relatively thin, but they should be fine if you keep a good watch on their temperature. Look up the signs of hypothermia in dogs, and just make sure that they're warmed up if they ever start showing symptoms. I agree, though, that I would keep them inside - though I think this is best anyways for a good bond with your dog - and if you live in the city, try and buy booties for the dog if he walks on salted sidewalks.

Their skin and hair isn’t that thick. They aren’t meant to be cold weather dogs, but if you keep them inside they should do fine. The cold won’t matter when they go outside to play since they will be getting a lot of exercise and producing heat. They would probably only get to cold during the downtime. I’m not sure how cold it is where you live, but I have friends here in the Midwest and their American Bulldogs love the snow and do fine in the cold.
