My dog is getting bald spots. Any ideas?

Do Eskimo Huskies like cats?
Any dog likes cats if they have been around them. Mine have been raised with cats but still chase them. they will kiss them also.

I have a six month old American Eskimo and his ears don't stand up. Will they stay like that or eventually stand up?
If they are not standing up by now, then probably they will not consult the breeder (hopefully not a mill) and your vet for recommendations

My American Eskimo is 6-months old and she's got quite a bit of fur, but she isn't fluffy like her parents were. Is this normal or will she never be fluffy?
Most dogs reach adult maturity about age two. Your dog at 6 months is a baby and will not have the mature coat until at least two years old.! Enjoy the best dog in the world!
I have 2 American Eskimo sisters, one is very fluffy and the other has a much smoother, non-fluffy coat. They are a year and a half now and it appears they will be staying this way. I love them either way!

I just wanted to know if a 6 month old american eskimo is safe and friendly around a newborn baby?
No dog or animal should ever be left around a child at any time. Animals are animals and have animal instincts. My dogs have been raised around kids, but still would not leave them alone with kids when they are tiny!
Ours is safe around all kids he dose have lots of energy and will sniff and lick the newborn but like all dogs you should watch and make sure they act OK together

Hi. I have a toy american eskimo puppy. He is about 4 1/2 months old and has a very thin coat. I received him when he was 6 weeks old and he was never very fluffy and his coat just became thinner as he grew older. All the pictures I see online of eskies are very fluffy and even pictures I've seen of other eskies from the same breeder have been fluffy. Will his coat fluff out or will it always stay thin like it is?
It seems it is time for the "puppy ugly stage" where the puppy loses its hair around the 4 month period and gets its adult hair at about 8 months of age

My husband and I adopted a handsome little eskie who is 5 months old. He is afraid of everything and everyone. He wont leave the room and explore the house. He wont leave the room to go in the kitchen to eat. When we take him outside to go potty, he hids by our feet. He jumps at anything, noise, voices, tv. Are all eskies like this? We have had him for a week and a half and he just is not settling in. What can we do to help him?
Thank you all for replying. It has been 4 months now and he has adjusted wonderfully. He is very protective of certain family members. He is wonderful with our 3 year old and they play together well. I am thankful that we stuck with it and kept trying. HE is the cutest dog I have ever seen!
When we first got our eskie, he was the same way. I had to actually hand feed him so he would eat, he stayed by my side constantly and would cry every time i left him. He was very shy and timid. After about a month, he adjusted and is now very socialbe. He is very protective and has tons of energy, he also has become more independent. It just takes time and patience. Good Luck!!
My american eskimo is 7 years old and is still very timid around visitors to our home. She will have nothing to do with my parents or any other visitors. My parents dog sit for us at their home, while she is at their house, she is friendly. This may be because she feels secure with their two dogs and she follows their actions. The timid american eskimo needs to continuesouly be introduced to the things that bother them. For instance, if the water hose was left out across walk, she would not go past it into the yard. We worked with her to over come the fear. After several days, she learned the hose was not going to hurt her.
My american eskimo can be very timid at times. He has a few things that he is afraid of which i find weird. Simple things like my car keys, the tile floor, baloons, and pretty much anything with a wheel of any type. One time while jogging a roller-blader went by and Sully almost killed me by jumping between my legs! Although he is afraid of things he still loves to explore and play and especially loves being outside. I hope that your puppy will adjust because they really are the most amazing dogs! Goodluck

We were very fortunate to have adopted an American Eskie a few months ago. She is about 1 1/2 years old and appears to be completely healthy; however, she sheds clumps of hair then tends to regrow it and then sheds clumps again. When I view photos online all the dogs look very thick with fur and she appears to have a very thin coat. I do brush her nearly on a daily basis because of the huge clumps that she leaves behind on the rugs. Any suggestions for her to get the thick coat and stop the severe shedding? We live in northern Michigan in case it could be climate???Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Thank you so much for your expertise! She is still losing hair and looks so tiny with her mane almost gone. I hope she gets her thick coat back by this winter so she looks like a plump dog! LOL It does help getting advice so I know that it isn't something I am doing wrong. I even took her to the vet and he said it was a normal thing??? go figure
What your female is doing in the spring and autumn is called "blowing her coat" and all females do this right before they go into heat. I have a female and she sheds like crazy, literally clumps of hair come out all over the house. She appears to only have her undercoat for a few weeks, then her hair comes back nice and fluffy and thick. It is perfectly normal what your dog is experiencing.
My first American Eskimo had a thinner coat and would shed in clumps also. Her shedding was worse in spring and autumn. She was also allergic to grass but it was unknown if that had anything to her thinner coat and clumpy shedding. We live in central Pennsylvania. Our second eskie has a very thick coat and doesn't seem to shed way our first did.

Would they also be good outdoor dogs, maybe spending the night indoors?
My Eskie is almost 2 yrs old, and ever since I first had her at 6 weeks old, she still prefers the great outdoors. She likes to come into the house to visit with the entire family, but she loves being outside the most. I reside in San Antonio, TX and my Eskie does pretty well with the constant changes of temperature. She does prefer the cold, so she'll either sleep directly under the ceiling fan in the bedroom or prefer outside with the cool breeze.
My American Eskie loves being outdoors esp. if she has toys to play with and can run freely. At night she snuggles in bed with me as she is exhausted from her daily play.

My Eskie Puppy is 8 months and he simply cannot stay out of my wife's shoe closet and our clothes basket. He's chewed up several pairs of my wife's shoes and her underwear. Will this get better down the line??
My eskie loves to chew. I bought granny apple bitter spray from the pet store and it has worked wonders. Make sure you buy lost of strong chew toys, mine tended to chew the stuffed ones up in five minutes. Now everytime he sees me spray something, he automatically knows not to chew on it, he hates the taste. Do not get me wrong, he did chew my phone charger into. Just keep things put up as much as possible and know that this will pass. Good luck. Oh, my husbands friend had a dog that would chew up everything, even furniture and they got the spray and it worked wonders!
Blissfully yes. Mine took about a year and half to out grow the shoes. They still can't resist a towel or a sock!!

My eskimo puppy is approx. 12 weeks old and has very runny eyes. She already had noticeable tear stains when I got her at 9 weeks. Any suggestions to help with the discharge?
USE ANGEL EYES IT AHMAZING you can bye it at the pet store
When we got our puppy, it had bad stains under his eyes, the vet said that there was nothing to do. I did my research and I read that well water, food coloring (especially red), and fleas can cause the staining. When I used filtered water, switched the food and treated him for fleas, is was completely gone within about 6 weeks. Do not waste your money on products that say it can remove it, you can solve it yourself. Best of luck.

What is the difference betwwen an American Eskimo and an Alaskan Eskimo? I have a dog found in the Alaskan artic. The vet thinks is part American eskimo/huskey. He is solid black with an American eskimo coat, personality and body shape. We would love to breed him to have a pup or two for our alaskan homestead, He is a fantastic guard and watch dog.
This actually fits the description of a Schipperke; they are a cousin of the American Eskimo Dog who is similar in temperament and build.

My American Eskimo coat is not fluffy! It is straight. Why do you think so? How do you make it fluffy?
Post Response
We are not allowed to have indoor pets. Do they have to live indoors or can they live in a kennel outdoors?
I personally think that they would do better if the could be inside and not kept outside. I say this because after a few minutes outside in the summer our dog looks like the heat is getting to her. However, our lab just lays there and I can't get her to come in. The eskimo is usually ready to come in during the summer after a good play time outside. Now in th winter it is another story. I can'tget her to come in. She loves the snow and could stay out forever if I let her. So I usually let her stay outside with the kids for a bit to play in the winter before she comes in.

I really want an American Eskimo puppy. Will they be good with good with cats?
I have three cats and one Eskie; they are generally tolerant of cats and other small critters. As long as you firmly discourage any chasing of the cats, you should be fine!
My American eskie is great with cats. Think part of the reason is he was intoducted to cats when he was a puppy .
I have an Alaskan Eskimo, a relative of the American Eskimo. My dog Rosie is about 4 years old and she tolerates the cats but she loves to play and tends to chase the cats around like its a game. One of my cats hides because of this but she touches noses with my dog when neither are in a frisky mood. My male cat on the other hand doesn't allow my dog to chase him and hisses everytime Rosie tries to play with him. So it varies.
I have 3 American Eskimo dogs, and our oldest one, Trixie, barely tolerates our cat, Chance. The middle one, Rocky, totally ignores the cat, while our youngest one, Dakota, is extremely tolerant of the cat. The Chance follows Dakota around and when Dakota lies down, the cat lies down, also....usually either on or beside Dakota's head. Dakota just lies there and waits for Chance to find a comfortable position.

I have an adorable 6 month old American Eskimo Dog. I am a little concerned because her coat (white and biscuit) is straight, but does not stand up. Is this all right? Will her coat change? Should I have her coat cut down some?
If you want the hair to stand up you need to comb it tail to head, instead of head to tail.
Post Response
Do American Eskimo dogs get along with other dogs?
My spitz gets along with other dogs as long as they are not aggressive. If they are aggressive towards her she will put them in their place.
Post Response
My Eskimo is approx 7 years old. His fur is not coming in right and his underskin is a blackish color. we did a blood test at the vet, but everything came back normal. Is is a possible diet allergy? his brother, an 8 year old eskimo, is fine with a lush coat.
Post Response
are all eskimo spitz white or are they tan in color like a golden retriever too?
As per the American Kennel Club you can have biscuit cream in the color of the coat.
The breed standard only allows white.
Post Response
I am considering getting an american eskimo dog but I have a pet lovebird and am wondering if this would be a bad combination or if the dog could be taught to respect the bird?
My eskimo is 10 years old and while we have our own arrangement of birds, cats, and a few reptiles, she is never aggresive toward any of the animals in her "pack". She is not your typical spitz though. She is very laid back and has lots of manners. She is very well behaved and non aggresive.
Also, if you get a male, neuter him as young as possible to lower aggression.
My Eskie was very aggressive towards my cats when I first got him. In about two weeks they had reached some kind of agreement and now all is peaceful. Cats can handle themselves better than a bird, though. These dogs do seem to have a well developed prey drive and I can see them going after a bird. They can jump about six feet in the air, as well. They are very smart though, and with proper training I think you could all live together happily. I, personally, would never leave the bird out in the house, loose, when you aren't around to supervise.....you never know.....Good Luck.....you won't find a more loving dog breed.

How do you treat tear duct and weeping of the eyes
I finally broke down and bought Angel Eyes and fed my eskie about 1/2 - 3/4 of the recommended dose for a couple of weeks and the tearing problem and stains disappeared. Now I only give it to her about once every week or two and she is still tear and stain free. It's expensive but works!

My miniature eskimo is very friendly with my son & myself, but if anyone else come to my home she tries to bite them. She was given to me by someone. One of the adults was not so nice to her and sometimes I think she may have been abused by that adult. When I first got her, she nipped my granddaughter & my son. My son is not afraid of, but my granddaughter is. I want her to spend as much time out of the crate as possible. How can I get her to where she can stay out of the crate without barking or trying to bite someone. I just don't let anyone spend the night because I would have confine her in her crate or put her leash on her and hold on to it. She is a little more calmer when the leash is on. Any advice?
Watch Cesar Milan, Dog Whisperer. He has GREAT training suggestions. It is joy to watch him. Here are some basic suggestions. Do not allow the behavior to escalate to barking, let alone biting. While dog is in the crate, she must achieve a calm, submissive state. When she is calm and submissive (relaxed, calm breathing, possibly laying down) you remove her from the crate and do not allow her to become agressive. Keep her in a calm submissive state by touching her face or shoulder and saying shh, over and over. You are correcting her and preventing the escalation of excitement/violence. Your correction has to equal her level of agression, so don't hesitate to raise your touch correction a notch if she does not respond appropriately. You MUST become the pack leader in your home. Your dog currently feels like she needs ot protect you and RULE the pack and this is not what you want.

I have a female toy eskie and she is almost a year old. She is always sherdding every toy that I get for her. Will she ever get over the "chewing" phase?
Get used to it, they have very sharp puppy teeth and love to chew. I have had to break down and buy tougher toys and still he chews them up, they just last longer! They love to chew!! Keep anything you do not want chewed up, kept out of reach, mine chewed up walls, floors and charger cords.
My Eskie does the same thing so my family and I have got to the point that we either tie a knot in a towel or a sock and let her flop that around instead of buying pet toys that don't even last a day.
So does my dog miniature eskie. I just buy cheap toys and ones that he can't destroy. As long as he is happy.
Post Response
Do american eskimo dogs like the water? or are they like chows in that they fear it?
My eskie loves water as soon as she taught herself to jump in our pool we couldn't seem to get her out. She loves to swim.
My eskie likes water he can walk into like lakes and ponds. He doesn't like the swimming pool because he has to jump into it. He only jumped in once last summer. He was a year old then.
Post Response
Is an american eskimo hypoallergenic?
They do not produce as much dander as other breeds and some consider them hypo-allergenic because of that......I guess it would depend on how severe your dog allergy is...
Post Response
My 8 year old eskie has just recently started to urinate on beds, especially while sleeping. She doesn't do it all the time but enough to cause my wife and myself concern. Averaging about one time per month. Any ideas?
My eskie deveoped this problem after getting spayed. It is a common problem that can be solved by taking a prescription pill once a week for life.
Pee pee issues can sometimes indicate a urinary tract infection.
Post Response
Is the american eskimo dog a crossbreed? If so,what two dogs were breeded?
This is not a cross breed. It is recognized by the AKC.
Post Response
does the america eskimo dog like the heat?
Adopted my eskie 7 yrs ago. We live in Florida and she doesn't seem to mind the heat. She occasionally even sunbathes! She has a doggie door so she can come and go as she pleases. But unless it's the "dog days" of summer she loves to be outdoors.
not particularly because of their thick coat, in the summer or hot days they tend to pant alot more then most breeds I owned an eskimo for 15 years and I'm still learning about them they are adorable and fun loving....
Post Response
my 4 yr old miniture american eskimo is losing his hair. He has been put on thyroid medication but I haven't seen any improvement. i'm just wondering if anyone has seen this in an american eskimo before?
they tend to have more trouble with allergies than other dogs. Try a different brand of food? Weed out things they might be allergic to - shampoo, sprays, etc. My vet said to bathe them regularly as well to prevent skin allergies.....Once every two to three months. They also tend to get hotspots.....dab a bit of over the counter antibiotic on the bald spots if they start to look red and ooze lliquid...
well to be honest I'm not sure. If you bought your eskimo from someone I would see if they have any health issues, my eskimo was allergic to fleas and that made her loose her hair hope your eskimo gets better....
Post Response
I just recently got an american eskimo for a christmas present and my husband brought him home and he has a brown nose and green eyes they gave him paperwork for him I am trying to see if that is a bad thing since I thought they had black noses and brown eyes.
Post Response
I have a 2 year old American Eskimo male. I have not had him neutred, as I was thinking of getting a female. He comes from a very good breeder, one of the top in the country. In the last months, his nose has gone from black to a brown color. I am not sure if it is a nutrition issue, as he is an extremely picky eater, or a natural process. I don't know now if I should breed him or have him neutered. His is such a wonderful dog. I throught any other color but black was not good.
Post Response
was the american eskimo breed used for hunting?
I don't know the answer to that yet, but my eskie has caught and killed many mice and chipmunks, six squirrels, one young hedgehog and a Canada Goose! He hunts tirelessly on walks and would rather hunt than play any games. He even caught a rabbit on the run once, but I got it away before he could kill it. When he isn't "hunting" he's a medical alert service dog and the sweetest pup on the planet.

I have a white eskie. She has a brownish streak under her right eye. I was told dogs get that when they cry. Is it true? And how can I prevent that?
Their tears cause it. They also get it on their paws from licking their feet. Its called Oxidation. Theire is somthing in their tears and saliva that does it. Any ways, you shouldd be able to get some tear staine remover and it should clear right up. My american eskimo gets tear stains alot.
No it's not the water. We have an American Eskimo pup and we asked our vet if the water thing was true. It's actually something in their tears and in their saliva that causes their fur to turn redish brown.
that isn't when they cry, its the type of water you use. waters with iron can cause this. Try getting distilled water. it should clear up.

I'm thinking of buying a toy eskimo puppy. but the only thing im not so fond of is the shedding. i heard that they leave litle white hairs all over?? is this true??
This is probably not going to be the most popualr answer, but I keep my Eskie shaved in the summer. Hair about 1 inch long. We live in south Texas and have 5 to 6 months of 100 degree days and he just gets too hot with the full coat. This cuts down on the shedding in the house alot. No tumbleweeds! I bought a stiff brush to brush the hair off the sofa and do that alot. Buy white slipcovers and save yourself a big headache. Really, though, if you don't mind how they look with short hair, trim it and cut the shedding issues - also ends the "cling-ons" of poop hanging from their long rear end fur.
Don't get a dog period if you are concerned about shedding. I had an eskie for 13 years. She died because of gall bladder stones. The surgery was unsuccessful, but she was the love of my life. The best dog I have ever owned bar non! You will not find a more loyal dog than the eskie.
ours is a 3 year old male Kaja...yes there is some. but nothing to worry about, he goes out in the and sleeps by the door inside by nite (great watchdog/doorbell) I brush him twice a year outside with a mechanics wire brush. I get so much hair from him It could supply another dog!!!
Please!!! do not get this beautiful pup if you do not want the shedding. Even with regular brushing, I have to clean the filters on my A/C once a week. I remove the front grill and use a soft broom to brush off the hair. I have 2 outer filters and 1 inner. Until I realized the dog hair was clogging the filters, my A/C bill doubled! I love my dog and personally find her antics and unconditional love well worth the time.
I have a male miniature eskie who lives indoors. We have hardwoods, and it looks like white tumbleweed!! I sweep several times a week to keep it under control. He's well worth the effort, though.

I have an American Eskimo, male named Rex. He is 19 years old and in fairly good health. He does have arthritis. What is the life expectancy of this breed. No one can believe he is actually 19.
Eskios generally live for 15-16 years of age as far as i know. your ekie lived a longg life =]

How do I get my dog to lose weight? She is about 10 pounds over weight. We walk her everyday and run her for about a mile a day. She is feed a half cup of food 2 times a day and is over weight. Is it the wrong food or just not enough exercise?
My 14 1/2 year old Eskimo Spitz had trouble loosing weight for over three years. We walked him regularly, cut his food down (like you did), tried the weight control dog food, used green beans as filler to make him think he was getting extra. Basically, we did everything the Vet told us to do to help & nothing was working. (I was even chastised by a Vet tech for his over-weight problem). Then the tests came back that he had Cushings Disease & it wasn't my fault. The tests are expensive, but at least you can find out what is going on. Hopefully, if it is Cushings, you can try to control it: like the early forms of diabetes.
Assuming that she is on regular adult dog food, you seem to be doing everything correctly. If she is still on puppy food, it could explain her weight gain. You could switch her to diet dog food. It`s available from the vet or any major pet store. I`m not sure how long you`ve been exercising her but you should start to see results. 1 mile a day is plenty for a small breed.
