American Mastiff Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

I have been doing some research on both the American mastiff and the English mastiff. I have noticed on some English mastiff sites information stating that the American mastiff has a definite tendency to become really agressive. We have had Rottweilers in the past and love the breed, but I have always wanted a mastiff and am looking into the American or English. I am just a little concerned about some of the information I have been reading from English mastiff breeders. Thank you.
I have a 2 year old AM who is very unlike all the reviews we read before purchasing (from Flying W. Farms). He is very prey driven - chases anything that moves (animals, cars, you name it). Barks a lot. Drools a lot. Snapped at the vet and my father-in-law for no reason. He is certainly not the gentle giant that was advertised! During the first year, he chewed the woodwork, windowsills, furniture, steps, etc. He had plenty of toys and bones, but for some reason preferred to chew on wood. We also had a very big problem with him always trying to bite our hands and arms when we were playing with him. On his walks, he would decide to suddenly jump up on us and grab our coats or arms - this is a big problem when your puppy is 90 lbs. We worked with a trainer who suggested using a head halter which allowed us much more control over his jumping and biting. Our vet told us that he has never dealt with a mastiff that exhibits the characteristics that our's does. If I purchased another mastiff, it would definately by an English Mastiff. The main reason we purchased an AM was for less drool and good health. Our AM drools a lot, and he has skin allergies on top of it all.
I just put down my America Mastiff, saddest day of my life. She was the most gentle well behaved dogs I have ever owned. Great with children, other dogs and cats. Truly Gentle Giants. I landed here searching for another when I'm ready

I am interested in getting an American Mastiff, but my house has two different sets of steps. Is this a problem for Mastiffs?
I have a two year old AM and he will go up the stairs, but forget about coming back down - does not like it.

Do this breed come in fully black in color?
American Mastiff's do not. They are only, fawn, apricot, and brindle(light or dark). If black is what you want-I would go for the dark brindle. Ours is dark brindle and the only light part on him is his "tiger stripes" and he has a few patches of white on his paws and chin.

What's the difference between an american mastiff and a american bullmastiff?
bullmastiffs are half english mastiff and half american bulldog whereas american mastiffs are half english mastiff and half anatolian shepherd. AM's drool and snore less as well.

How are mastiffs with chihuahuas? I want to make sure he wont hurt her accidently before i get one.

Has anyone out there had an American Mastiff for more than a year and then brought a couple of adult cats in the house? How did it go? How did you go about making the transition? If they are supposed to be gentle giants, would that mean they wouldn't initially want to hurt the other animals coming in? Also I believe this is due to lack of training and still not being fixed as he is 18 months old and not intelligent as others are saying their AM are. He gets some of the basics but other than that he still gets into everything he shouldn't, barks a lot and at...well everything. Any advice?

I play rugby, involves tackeling, and was wondering if I were to bring him out to games and I were to get tackled would the AM rush the field to defend me? Also, how are they with kids when they are wrestling around outside?
He would but not really the very first time u take him there. When gets used 2 u and is loyal to u he'll start biting others in d ground as me uncle owned an AM before and I've him to growl me when I talk to my uncle or his child ruffly.

We are in the process of researching the Mastiff breed. Other than size, what are the main differences between the bull, the American and the English Mastiffs?
The differences between the Bullmastiff, American Mastiff and English Mastiff are largely in appearance and size rather than temperment. the Bullmastiff was a cross between a mastiff and a bulldog back in the 1800's to produce a lighter, more agile dog to patrol large manor grounds with the gamekeeper. The English Mastiff is the largest of the mastiff breeds going back to the 1400's. They sometimes accompanied their owners to war, but were used more as guardians of the home. The American Mastiff is a much younger breed, developed 20-30 years ago, being a cross between an English Mastiff and and Anatolian Shepherd ( also considered a mastiff type) It is almost identical to the English mastiff, in both size and weight, but with tighter lips ( not so long and loose) which means that it doesn't drool quite so much. All three breeds are courageous, and loyal, with a dignified demeanor. They are great with children although due to there size and clumsiness as puppies need supervision around small kids.

Will a AM make a good fist dog?? Also are they known to be dominante?
It all depends on what type of dog you want for your first one we have an AM and absolutely love her. They are very trainable and affectionate animals but as with ANY dog out there if they do not have someone in there home that leads them they will assume the role as leader themselves. Are they a fiercely dominate breed that will challenge you every day? No. Just remember they are very big and be prepared for your coffee table (we no longer have one) to be swept clean every time they enter the room.

How intellegent are the dogs?
we have a mastiff from flying w farms(cleetus) and he's a genius!! Fredricka breeds great dogs. Cleetus loved puppy class. I would recommend it for any one getting a dog. They learn alot and its good socialization for the puppies. Cleetus weights 225 and he's alot to handle but hes very gentle and well behaved
I have a 4 month old, male, AM and he is wonderful and very intelligent! It is very hard to look at his like he is a puppy because he is so laid back, doesn't chew on anything other than his toys, is already housebroken (was at 10 weeks) and not to mention the fact that he is 60 lbs already! He is currently going through his adolescent phase where he is testing his boundaries...but he'll get through it and be more obedient. He was very easy to train on basic commands (sit, down, etc.)...he learned them after only a few tries. Hope this helps :)

i grew up having a couple of mastiffs when i lived with my parents. now i have my own place and want another. but I like to backpack and go hiking etc, how well will a mastiff do if i take them hiking or backpacking with me?
The AM's can be good hiking dogs once they have fully grown and matured...but that can take roughly 2 years. Any type of strenuous activity before maturity can seriously damage the dog's bones and joints and you could end up with a young AM suffering from arthritis and possibly other problems. Also, even when the dog is full grown, AM's have the tendency to get tired...so be prepared to only walk him as far as you'd want to carry him back if need be. And ideally, a fully matured AM will only need a short walk a day (approx. a mile), so you might want to consider another breed if hiking/backpacking is of large importance.

My daughter is afraid of dogs, and my son is hollering he wants a puppy, but I have been reluctant because of my daughter, would it be a good idea for us to have am American Mastiff puppy while she is young and can get used to it or should we wait till she is much older? I have always been told that if exposed to animals children ar less likely to be afraid, and I would like a puppy myself. So what would be a good thing to do?
If your daughter is afraid of dogs an American Mastiff is not one to consider. The AM's need a strong figure and tend to take advantage of the less confident.

I had a AM growing up and would like to get another one. I have 3 kids, and another dog. Would this be a problem? I am wanting a Male Puppy! Is there a AM rescue around Oklahoma??

Wanted to know how well AM's do with the addition of a new AM puppy introduced as a part of the family? Thinking about getting a female as a sibling/playmate for our male(currently 1yr old) he's very territorial when it comes to our daughter and myself and stands between us and other dogs or strangers. possible problems?

We have a 1 year old male American Mastiff named Leo. Think we need to change dog food-possible allergy to the current food. What is the most recomended dog food(besides home made) to give AM's? (note-he eats about 5-6 cups per day)
I feel the best food will be royal canin if u can afford it. Its costly but it is the best because its made from the best items available.
You'd want any high quality, low protein and fat food. My first was a fan of Iam's, but there's also a fantastic option made through a breeder in Southern California that will ship it out, and it's been adding years to the lives of giant dogs. They even have a picture of a sixteen year old Great Dane. I think it's called gentle giants.

We have a 11 week old AM. We know that obedience training is important but would like to know at what age ( or problems exhibited) to start this training?
We are starting ours at 12 weeks, right after the last puppy shot.

I am looking into getting a AM but have never owned one. I worked at Boxer breeding kennel for a number of years so being around dogs is not an issue. But I'm not very sure as to where I can find a AM breeder. I dont want one for show, just a pet/member of the family. And roughly what kind of prices will I be looking at for buying the dog, and roughly how much food they eat?
We got our puppy from Frederica at Flying W Farm, great breeder. Pricing just changed, have a look at their site. Our 12 week old female puppy eats about 6-7 cups of quality dried food and a chicken leg every day.

I am looking to adopt an AM in 2008. I had a St. Bernard for 9.5 years - he was an energetic puppy but was not the type to chew on furniture, etc. What is the energy level of a properly exercised AM?
Ours runs around a bit. like any puppy. Minimum chewing of kids toys or furniture... and she has almost grown out of it at 13 weeks.
American Mastiff puppies have the energy level of any puppy. As adults, American Mastiffs, like their English Mastiff cousins, can turn into couch potatoes if you let them. They don't require a lot of exercise, but a nice walk is always enjoyed. My American Mastiff loves to chase a Frisbee or his Jolly Ball thrown across the yard. Wishing you the best with your future American Mastiff! They're awesome dogs!
