Do Cavaliers have fur or hair? Do they have an undercoat or contain a lot of dander?
Post Response
i have a 7 month king charles that still has all of its puppy fur - its shedding alot, bt its fur isnt growing much. when will a full coat develop?
it may take at least a year or so to clear all of the loose hair and it will all grow back within a months period.

I have a nearly 2 yr old King Charles and recently we have noticed blood in her stools, What is wrong with her?

What age do cavaliers usually pass away? Because mine is a male, 10 years old and can't do much things anymore i know that they can pass away at 10 years. Thanks for any advice.
after about 12-14 years old

We have a cavalier female tricolored she is 3 1/2 months old. She has some feathering around her front paws but no longer hair on her chest or back legs. When should they begin to get the longer hair?
My cavalier got fur on her chest and more on her tail/legs around 6-7 months old.
our tri is 16 months and has only started growing longer fur and a bushy tail in the past few months. se is very tall and quite thin and i was worried about her although she is full of life and eats well, she has never had a massive appetite. and all the others we met seemed to be bigger and bushier than her but then i met someone who had one the same age last week and she was identical.
Post Response
If I were to leave a cavalier king charles spaniel home alone while I'm at school for 7 hours will she or he be alright? We do have another dog in the house.
they may be alright but they will usually fight over food and water and cannot go to the batroom outside because they may poop on the floor.
Post Response
Are Blenheim puppies usually tan and white? Does their tan markings change to a red color later in life? Are there any Blenheims with tan rather than reddish fur?
usually as puppies grow, their hair will turn a deeper red or tan, but theres no real way of telling how dark they will be as puppies

I have an 8 month old Cavalier. She weighs 9 pounds, is as long as my dauschund, and has skinny, long, gangly legs. Is this normal? Most of the cavs her age are stalkier and have meaty shorter legs.
My cavalier just turned one last month and is still the same way. We stood him next to the standard size and he is much much taller with gangly legs and a skinny little body. Something to keep in mind though was that his dad was the largest they come in the breed and apparently there are three sizes of cavaliers.

My Cavalier king Charles is one year old. she looks fat to me, I measured her round the body 18 inches, is this fat?
Your dog is no longer a pup. Cav's should be fully grown at 8 to 9 months of age. I would take it to the vet to be checked. As the breed has genetic heart problems, you don't want to put extra strain on their hearts. While treating them may be hard to resist, It might be a case of life and death. There are some variations in size in the breed, so the measurement is not enough for an indication of health. Please visit your vet.
no it is still a pup and I bet it is just extra skin
not to me it sounds cute and it is still a pup

I have a 2yr. old Cav and she is extremely attached to me. I will be going on a 2 week trip and worry about her with a live-in sitter. She has been cryinig at the door when I leave her just for an hour. What should I do?
You have to get her detached from you. Does she sleep in the same room as you? Do you take her with you everywhere? One reason dogs cry is because they are bored. Give her some of her favourite chews and toys. Leave through the back door and mix everything up a little. She won't know if you are coming or going. Hire someone, or get a friend or family member to come and stay with your dog while you go out some times. Have you considered getting another cav as a companion and maybe a mate??

my cav is 5 months old and only weighs 5.8lbs. is that dangerously underweight for the breed at this age?
we have a cav that is 17 months and she only weighs around 12 lbs, she was the runt and was tiny when we had her , and people are always saying how small she is. she also has long spindly legs. she has never had a big appetite, but is full of energy all the time. i guess they are like us no 2 are the same !
My five month old Cav is 9 pounds...they need to eat a lot as puppies! He was 6 pounds when I got him at 16 weeks.
yes
I have been around Cavaliers my whole life and now own three. The size varies....depending on Mom and Pop. Past that-there are often throwbacks in this breed as they have been with us since the 1400 and breed to other breeds to accentuate certain qualities. I would not worry about a Cavalier that size. Your Vet will tell you if he or she is healthy. I have one adult that weughs 12 pounds., I think he weighed less than yours at that age. Enjoy your Cavalier. They are very special.

I have just bought my second cav,7 months old. He seems to be very tall and long. He already weighs 8.5kg. He is not overweight, is it normal for some cavs to be alot bigger than usual?
Yeah i have a Cavalier King Charles boy and he is all legs and very long, while his sister is quite small and petite. Hes fine :) he will just fill out quite a big when he gets older.

I am thinking about getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but I have already 2 cats. Will the dog get along with them?
To be honest worry more about the cats, I too have just bought a CAV and have two adult cats and the CAV just wants to play and chace them but the cats are a little scared and dont want to play with her.
I have a Cavalier King Charles whom we all love dearly, I also have two cta who he loves to bits. They are his best friends and he there's. This breed gets along with everyone and anyone...

I've been wanting to get a cavalier puppy. The articles the I read about them. They are beautiful dogs. My question is: How big or small are they? Are they similar to the size of a papillion? Smaller than the cocker spaniel? OR approx. the size of an english bulldog or a pug? please give me an idea about way. I've read the articles of what their sizes are supposed to be. But I've heard they are small dogs like a papillion and in between the cocker spaniel.
I have a Cav and a Pug. The Cav is slightly taller about 1-1.5 inches and a little bit longer. He is not as heavy as the pug. He weighs 15 pounds and my pug is 19. They play very well together. The pug is 3 and the Cav is 1.

My Cavalier, Dudley Do Right, is 1 1/2 years old. It was about November when his fur started to look crazy. It is sticking straight up in different places on his body. Is this his winter coat or is this permanent? How can I make it look normal again?
My Cav is doing the same thing he looks crazy. His black fur is growing faster than the white. Like yours its growing out. He looks funny. He is 1 right now.

How is the shedding and maintenance of the coat?

My seven year old cavalier has recently started spitting up. It happens when she gets up after laying down for a period of time. Mostly it is just water, and it is often accompanied by her snorting (common in cavaliers). It seems to be getting worse every day. Any advice?
My dog does this if she has been lying on her back. Also sometimes gets fur in her mouth.

I just bought a 8week old puppy yesterday and dont know what I should be feeding him. Should he be on dry or wet food or both. He's turning his nose up at everything and im afraid he'll become ill if he doesnt start to eat. Also is milk bad for the dog?
royal canin sell dog food made for cavalier king charles dogs I tried every brand on the market and he turned his nose up at all but when I bought food all my worries about my charles were gone he eats and is happy and healthy and I know that this food is made for this breed so check out the web site for this dog food it is very interesting I promise you won't be disappointed I know we are glad we found this food for him.
I don't have a cavalier puppy, but I really would like to have one though. I read your question online about what to feed the puppy. I've raised golden retriever puppies and I've always fed them the purina puppy chow (the soft chewy kind in the bag). They were about 6-8 weeks old when I fed them that. When they were 5 weeks old , I fed them the purina canned puppy food. I only gave them approx. 1-2 teaspoons to start on their appetite. Milk will not hurt the puppy. It's best to give them warm carnation milk or goat's milk. Try adding a little milk in the puppy food for taste. That might start the puppy to eat. They say that you start to feed puppy food to smaller dog breeds at around 8 weeks and big dogs at around 5 weeks.I did a research because I had a cocker spaniel that had puppies for the first time. But she had sadly passed away. So, I do hope this does help in any way possible.Good luck and congradulations on your new family member. They are a joy!

I have a 6 month old male Blenheim puppy. He has reached the appropriate age for neutering but I am concerned about the possible effects of neutering on his structural growth. I was told that neutering before his growth plates have closed will encourage the dog to become "leggy" in his growth. Has anyone had this experience with their dogs ? What age should I get him neutered especially if I hope to maintain his good proportions ? He is well housebroken and so far has not displayed any marking tendencies.
we had our cav neutured in february when he was six months old and he is just perfect he has grown to full height and weight he weighs 15 lb and is healthy happy and perfect it is best to have them fixed at this age and it stops any aggressiveness in other male or female dogs they may encounter...
people say that if you neuter your cavalier at any age that they become lazy/fat which can lead to fatal heart problems consult your vet first and ask him everything you are worried about.

our spaniel is uncontrolable at feeding time. He gobbles his food and then licks the floor, carpet or what ever he can find. We have another dog also, so we have to keep him from eating her food also.
if they both have the same problem try giving them a diffrent brand of food

Please help I have a 2 year old male CKCP who is soo loved but unfortunately stinks !! He is well looked after and because of the smell i keep his belly hair very short but still he stinks. It smells like strong strong urine and litterally fills my house. I cant understand him still smelling straight after the bath. Could it be his boy bits rather than urine ?
Our dog's urine began to stink when he became mature. We would keep his stomach hair short but it didn't solve the problem. In the end we got him neutered and now there is no problem. I would talk to your vet about the problem.
could it be his ears, my pup also smelt constantly(like a dirty dog smell) even after bath, but now clean his ears every week with aurex ear drops, smell has gone,

ive also got a 12 week old cavalier blenheim femal (belle) and she is really maulting but also as the other answer to your question she also has a small hernia so can anyone tell me whether this does have anything to do with why she is shedding and i mean its everywher e im suprised she has any fur left
We have a 14 week old female puppy and she is also losing her coat. We discovered she had a small hernia at the same time her coat really started to change. Is this normal?

I have a 5 month old cavalier king charles,i cant seem to find a suitable food to give him, everything i give him seems to make hes toilet really loose,Could you reccomend a good food i could try.
When my Cavalier was a baby we had a very hard time finding food that agreed with him. He would strain and bleed, and I had his stools tested many times. I tried all kinds of expensive foods, and then the vet recommended Nutro Brand Lamb and Rice formula (make sure it's the adult formula). You can buy it at the pet store and it is in a green bag with a large sheepdog on the front. It worked immediately, and now I can't feed my dog anything else. I even get the treats they make.
Cavaliers have a sensitive stomach that takes a while to adjust to new food. Unfortunately this usually displays as soft or liquid stools. Introduce new food slowly - just a teaspoon of wet or a few chunks of dry mixed with the current food. Slowly increase the amount of new food over about two weeks.
I feed my 4 Adult Cavaliers straight Purina Puppy Chow. I've used Science Diet and after awhile, they were losing weight and their coats didn't look good. According to my vet, Puppy Chow has all of the necessary nutrients for maintaining good health like the other expensive dog foods do. For people who have a Cav with loose stools, try some plain boiled rice mixed with boiled chicken. For pups, use 1/2 teas of cottage cheese to tighten stools. DO NOT feed dairy products to adult dogs tho. adult dogs become lactose intolerant as they age.
Yes, Science diet worked for that problem for us too.
Ours had the same problem, can try boiling small (real small) piece of chicken and adding small portion to drive then start removing the chicken over time
Maybe You Could Try Eukanuba? They Do A Dry Food Made Espesially For Dogs With Sensitive Stomachs, As Well As Ones For Sensitive Skin, Sensitive Joints And A Special 'Excess Weight'. I Would Recommend Feeding Your Cavalier Dry Food. Don't Worry, My Cavalier Has The Same Problem! He's Had James Wellbeloved, Bakers, Pro-Plan, The Lot! I Now Feed Him On Purina Beta. He Doesn't Seem To Have Any Trouble With That, Maybe You Could Try That One Too? It's Cheaper Than Eukanuba, But I Think Maybe Eukanuba Sensitive Stomach Would Probably Be Better. Hope This Helps!
i had the same problem with my cavalier puppy! i dont feed him wet food, just dry now, and he seems to be doing ok. just remember not to feed your dog too much and make sure that he doesnt eat anything he shouldnt!!maybe you could go to your vet and ask them what you could give him?
nutro natural choice puppy small bites...my 4 month old cav LOVES it and his stool is firm and he goes regularly.
I have tried a variety of foods with my 3 cavaliers. As you know they can be picky eaters. My babies stopped eating science diet, but they all 3 love Bil Jac. It is very easy for them to chew as well.
same....science diet, a mix of dry and wet....it works
well my dog has a sensitive stomach and i use Science Diet, try that to see if it works!!

How well will a King Charles do with another adult dog but in a household where the owners are away 10 hours/day?Would like to get a puppy when I am off work but I will return to work eventually and would need to know that another dog's company would be ok without significant anxiety issues.
Well, these dogs love other dogs company so I think they'd be ok but if your other dog is a big and bosterious dog or agressive I dont think you should get a Cavalier King Charles because they are only small and it might get hurt by a bigger dog, also your other dog might get jealous of your new dog. If you have a big dog you should get one of the same breed and prefably an adult one too because you'll have to train your puppy but make sure the dogs get on before leaving them on their own, maybe you could get a friend or neighbour to check on them while you are away.
If you have time to properly train your new puppy, he/she should do fine. Your other dog would love the company. The puppy will probably chew a lot when you’re gone since she will have so much energy. As long as you can give them exercise at the end of the day, they should be happy dogs.
