Chihuahua Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

I have a Chihuahua that is 4 1/2 years old. How do you determine if they have a cold? She has been coughing some when she eats and her nose is a little stuffy, but other than that she seems to be okay.
it will determine if its nose is really wet or really dry:)

I have two questions actually. . . 1. Why does my chihuahua's gums look like they are rotting? 2. Could this be the cause of his extremely bad breath? THANKS!
Most chihuahuas get some form of dental disease at an early age. Brushing his teeth once a week is not sufficient because tarter and other build up can harden and become calcified in as little as 24hours. Dogs and ESPECIALLY small dogs like chihuahuas need to have their teeth brushed every day. If you see lots of tarter and build up you need to go see your veterinarian and probably have a dental prophylaxis which will get the tarter off and extend the life of your pet. Please don't ignore it as infection can travel from the mouth and damage the important organs such as kidneys and even the heart.
this problem could be from tater build up brush its teeth once a week .and that shoud help.

i think my dog is a chihuahua but he looks more like a Prazsky Krysarik so how do i find out what kind he is with out a vets help or can i find out with out on\e
there's no way to find out without a veterinarian and the blood test that checks types of breeds is not terribly reliable.

I got a new chihuahua puppy yesterday and he is quite different. People keep telling me he is rare, but I don't know much about the breed yet. He is white with one solid blue eye. He is three months old so I don't think he will grow out of the eye color. It is similar to the australian shepard blue eyes. Can anyone enlighten me on this coloring? Thanks.

my 10 week old sneezes alot like that too
we have a mini schnauser who sneezes for attention

My adult chihuahua occassionally acts like he is sore all over and has trouble walking. During these times he also shakes. Is this common in this breed and what may be causing it?
my chihuahua does that if it is windy and the wind hurts her ears.
Post Response
My 2 year old male chihuahua nurses his blanket. He will bunch it up lick it until its wet then nurse it. Why does he do that?
my guess would be that your puppy may have been taken away from it's mother sooner than it should have been or may be just reverting back to those loving days of nursing!

My chihuahua is almost 2 years old and weighs around 3lbs. She seems to go thru spells of not eating and her belly looks bloated. The rest of her looks very skinny. Any ideas what is going on with her?

Can chihuahuas have longer snouts & longer ears that don't quite stand up (about 12 week old pup) or does it mean that it is crossed with another breed?

I know my 13wk. old chihuahua can "smell" her potty pad & make it to it during the night (in the dark), even when she sleeps with us.

I am feeding my 5month old BENEFUL she wont eat it anymore, i don't let her beg but I feel really bad when I see she's not eating her food. What other PUPPY food is good?
Eukanuba
Post Response
My 5month old chihuahua is not eating her dog food anymore, she only wants our food but I dont want to feed her regular food what can I do?
Why not let her eat 'human food'? I have 3 chihuahua's, the oldest is 15yrs. Their meals are chicken/beef with grated vegies & rice. They do eat dried dog food & have dog treats but most of their diet is meat/vegies/grains & salads that I eat & they're all in good health.
you could try a differnt kind of PUPPY food and make sure its a good PUPPY food and dont let her beg for your food at all!

At how many months is a Chihuahua not considered a puppie anymore?

My Chihuahua is pregnant and she due to have her litter. How will I know when she is ready to have them or when she is in labor?
She might whine a little but she will defenitly try to hide and dig at things (might be a dark spot like the closet or even your bed) You have to keep watch even in the middle of the night around when shes due because she might have complications that need a vet asap or she and the pup can die. good luck
Post Response
I have a 3 year old chihuahua female, who has had a litter of puppies in august, she lost them all, so this is her first heat since then, she is swelling and gaining weight like she is pregnant again. Can she come in heat and not bleed?
Post Response
I have a 2 year old Chihuahua and is she is approximately 56 days into gestation. She is regular sized and weighs 9 lbs. Do the regular sized Chis have a difficult time giving birth? She isn't huge but I can see a pup or 2 moving around in there. Any suggestions on assisting with birth? I cannot afford to get her a C-section. What are your thoughts?
Post Response
How long does a 4 year female old stay in heat?
Your chihuahua will be in heat for about 21 days.
Post Response
My dog gave birth to two puppies which died, this happened 3 days ago and now she wont eat or drink anything. What can I do or is there something wrong with her? I need help I don't want her to die. Please help me out and let me know where I can take her or what I should do?
you should take it to a vet just to make sure it's still healthy but it might just be in shock of losing it's puppies.
Post Response
Is it normal for chihuahua puppies to look cock-eyed?
Yes.
Post Response
Why do these dogs sleep a lot?
They sleep because they are healthy. It's normal.

My mother and I have two Chihuahuas. Neither one like their dry dog food. We have tried several brands. They like canned food, but I heard that they need the kibble(dry)kind because it is better for them. They will sometimes refuse to eat if we just give them dry food. We've tried mixing the wet and dry and they both will pick out the wet and leave the dry. Is this specific to Chihuahuas? Are our Chi's spoiled? They are very picky, but we would like to find a food that is good for them, they like, and we can stick with.
You might try adding scrambled eggs to it so they have a incentive when they get to the bottom of the bowl. My mom's dog did the same thing and now sh will eat anything.
Post Response
Are chihuahua's supposed to loose there premolars at the age of 5 months?
Post Response
This may seem like a silly question, but when can you tell if a chihuahua puppy is or could be long-haired? I have puppies, unexpected pregnancy, I know, bad me for not getting them fixed in time, but nature will do that. They are only 3 days old. Mom and pups are doing fantastic. Mom is long-haired, dad is smooth coat. To me, they all look like smooth coat, but I wasnt sure if that is just because they are so young. Any response is very much appreciated! Added later: And just for clarification of my question above, this is not her first heat, it is her second heat. She had her first heat in April/May of 09, and went into her second heat in August, making me very unprepared because I figured I had 5-6 months. The mom and dad are not of the same blood lines. Again, thanks in advance for any responses!
I've found puppies usually take after the mothers side but what will happen is 3 will be like the mother and 2 like the dad if you know what I mean , are you planning on selling the pups?
Post Response
What shots do a 1 yr chi need? He is a rescue and hasn't had any vaccinations yet.
There are a number of shots that your pup may need. This can include distemper and rabies. Your vet will be able to give you a full list of what you'll need!

I have a two year old chi. We put her outside at night because if we don't she will pee or poo in the house. During the day she barks to be let out to go to the bathroom. The new problem is when shes outside in the garage she whines all night and we cant sleep any ideas?
There are two options you could try the first would be to crate train your chi, it will take time as they don't like to be away from you but as a chi is small you could keep the crate in your room. This would mean it's near you but you don't have to wake up and tread in poo. This has worked for my chi that is a yr now. The other option would be to leave down a training pad so your chi knows it can go toliet there if it needs to you might need to train it to go toliet there until it understands what you want. Theres no quick fix but as long as your persistent you will see changes.
Chihuahuas like to be near their owner. They also get cold fairly quick and need to stay warm. Our chihuahua wears a coat as well as sleeps with us. We let her out at night just before we crawl into bed. She still gets up in middle of night to potty once... but also depends on what she has eaten and how late she drank. Dogs won't go to the bathroom where they sleep. So try letting it sleep with you and if it licks you in middle of night, it's to wake you to go to potty. Just pay attention to the signs. Otherwise try the kennel in the house. Put it's bed and blankets and a stuffed animal in the kennel... it gives them the thought that they have someone with them since they do become attached to their owner and love to be held. Besides outside is to cold for them even if in the garage. Give it a try. But they love to sleep with you and curl up next to you.
Get her a kennel. Dogs won't go to the bathroom in their own sleeping space.

How many puppies can a chihuahua have?
Usually, Chihuahuas only have a litter of at least 2.
Our dog is from a litter of 5 although one died. His mother (a short haired) has just had another litter of 4. The father is long haired. There were 3 long haired & 2 short haired pups in the last lot. The first lot only had one long haired.

my 13 week old chcihuahua is loosing hair...her skin is showing it is pink and white pleasse tell me what do i do..?
A 13week old Chihuahua is not old!! Its commin with dogs.If its cold and they ly in front of a heater or under a blankie. What u need is a Kortisoon pill use for humans but its availible at vets.Use a 5mg pill 2 in the morning and 2pills at night.Day 2 use 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night and on the third day half half. After the first day you will see a big diffrence. It happened with both my pups and it works like a bom!
I'm not sure this is very helpful but maybe she is aging? Or has some kind of skin problem. I think you should go ask a vet, she seems pretty old, at old age dogs looe hair. But i'm not sure if i'm 100% right. I think it would be best for a vet to examine her.

my 5 year chi started peeing on my carpets when we are gone what can do for a spray to stop her from doing this?
I also have had great success with piddle pads. Place the pads in places that she has chosen to pee and my Precious will go on the pad over any alternative. The only time she ever has an accident is if I have forgotten to put a pad down or forgotten to change a dirty one or left it too long. The pads are reasonable at Pets Mart and Petco and the quality is good. You can get these pads also at Walmart at an unbelievable discount but take my advice on this one. You get what you pay for. The nearly 1/2 off six dollar brand at Walmart is like putting down paper towels and they leak all over your carpet or floor. There is no absorbency whatsoever. The mid range 10 to 12 dollar will stop all liquid from getting onto your floor which is the whole point in the first place right. I have not had to buy the more expensive scent infused pads but once and learned the unscented cheaper version had the same result for less. I hope this helps and really try the pads, they work! Good luck.
I've been using "Puppy Pads" for my Chihuahua for almost ten years. She rarely misses, and it has been the most convenient method of practicing sanitary toilet training for me. Good Luck!
There is a spray called simple soultion: "outdoor/indoor spray repellant for cats and dogs" it is a bit stinky, but goes away after a while. The dogs and cats hate it, trust me. But if the dog continues to pee, I think it would be best to maybe 1. train it or 2. you can get it a pee pad and train it to it or 3. potty train it or 4. put it somewhere out of reach of wherever you don't want them to pee and let it be a good space until you get back.

My 6 month old chihuahua has just started to pee in his water bowl as soon as he takes a drink and is so quick it is all most impossible to stop him. I have a bichon frise and they drink from the same bowl. I dont understand why he just started to do this out of the blue. Anyone have any ideas?
I don't know why, was he being potty trained? Maybe you can try a pee pad, it has this ability to make dogs go to pee there, but it doesn't work for all dogs. Or you can make another bowl of water where they won't drink, he can probably pee there. Hope i've helped.

My Chihuahua is 9 months old and is in heat. I know that chihuahua's shake alot but she hasn't shaken like this before and I'm just a little curious if it's because she is in heat?
Not sure if it's an always thing but mine did the exact same thing her first time in heat. I know she wasn't cold because it was in Texas during the summer :) She shook a lot and got extremely cuddle-y and sweet, which was odd because normally she is hyperactive and only cuddled when she was exhausted.

I have a 3 year old chihuahua, I have owned her since she was a small puppy, but im noticing lately she is getting very agressive towards people today she bit my uncle in the leg for no reason she just ran up to him and attacked. Is this normal for this breed of dog she has never been agressive towards me or my family. Im scared to let people come over because Im not sure what she is going to do. Is there a way to stop this behavior.
Have you dewormed your dog and had a check up lately with your vet and gotten blood work and a urinalysis? It would make sense to rule out any sort of infection or health problem before looking any further. Dogs get grouchy like people when they aren't feeling well, and the sad thing is they cannot speak words to tell us what feels bad.
Maybe she's pregnant? Or she has been annoyed by someone?

Do Chihuahuas' have blader problems?
How can all chihuahuas have bladder problems? If your dog has a bladder problem like a urinary tract infection (UTI) then this can be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, kidney problems can develop.

my short haired chihuahua has very thick soft hair like a lab puppy with droopy ears. he is eight weeks old 12 ounces. he was sold to me as a pure breed with no papers and i paid 900 for him. if hes not a pure breed what could he be mixed with?
my puppy looked like a yorkie mix as a puppie bt looks 100% chi now they go through funny looking stages.
puppies at that age still have puppy hair and are teething so ears can be down till older. He is very tiny so make sure his sugar does not go low (he would die).

I have a 6 month old chihuahua and his ears are not permantly erect. Has sometimes stands both(seldom) or one up but not all the time. He also doesn't have the "bug eyed" look. Could this mean he isn't pure bred or is he a normal chi?
Your pup is still young.

We have a 2 year old chi, whose eyes are seeming to be swelling and watering alot. Can he have allergies?
chihuahuas have eye problems that is inherent in their genes.

what makes chihuahua seem to have dryheaves
When you say dryheaves are you referring to the snorting sound they make while it looks like they are choking? It's very odd looking and sometimes alarming but is perfectly natural and harmless to a chihuahua. Experts refer to it as a reverse sneeze. It's not clear on why they do it, only that they do and it is normal. No worries.

I think my 7years old female chihuahua has been having seizures. She's fine and all of a sudden she gets wabbly and falls over to her side streches and becomes stiff. sometimes she urinates. it last about 1 minute. can you confirmed if she is having seizures or what else it could be?
my is doing the same thing. i took him to dr today and he done all of the test you can do. he said his liver is not working right. also my grandbabies had top him and crack his head. but he wants to work on the liver first. he put him on a diet and will check and see if it is working, right now he don't want to give him something for seizures because it effect the liver. just this week he is haveing 1 or 2 a day. i've been staying up with him at night. it happens most of the time when he is sleeping. hope this helps someone.
My 14 yr old girl was doing this as well. her Dr. said she has a slight heart murmur and fluid in her lungs. Get her checked out! My girl is taking Lasix now and doing much better.
Chihuahuas are more prone to health problems such as seizures and diabetes. As it sounds like this has occurred numerous times, I would get her to a vet as soon as possible to have her evaluated by a professional.

my family is about to adopt a baby chihuahua, we also have three cats. They weren,t thrilled about any of our former dogs.I really don,t know what to do.
I have two Chihuahuas (one is 2yrs, the other 1.5) and I recently got a kitten.. The male pretty much adopted the cat and follows her around 24/7. The female was not as impressed and was actually kind of scared of her at first :) after a couple days they all got along really well, playing, sharing food and toys.. now they all sleep in a pile - so cute. when my first Chi was a baby I stayed at a friends house with grown cats for a bit and the cats did NOT like him because he wanted to play with them all the time. Usually they would just jump onto things he couldn't reach, so he'd sit there and wait til they came down. personally i'd be worried about the cats swatting at a baby chi too hard and smashing him into a wall, but thats a small chance anyways. i'd say get the puppy, but keep a close eye on all the interactions for a few days to make sure nobody attacks anybody else.
My big male cat and chihuaha play all the time. The che is also in love with one of the cats. All except our old matron cat get along well with him and he loves to play with them. The male plays back and one of the females. Mostly the cats tolerate him.
some dogs enjoy playing with cats, but most cats dont enjoy dogs. they move too fast, and scare the cats. introduce them slowly, and they should do fine.

Is there such a thing as, Deer-eared Chihuahua? I just rescued a little guy and what told that he's a Deer-eared Chihuahua. He does, indeed, look like a mule deer.
There is no such thing as a DEAR EARRED Chihuahua. However, the common description for Chihuahua head shape is either: Apple Dome or Doe ( Dear ) Head.

I'm going to be getting a 3 year old Chihuahua from one of my co-workers... she can't keep him because her other dogs are beating him up and he has to stay in a cage all day which is not fair for him. But I have other pets at home (a rat and a bird) and I'm not sure how they would react to each other. I've had a Pitbull around them before but she thought the rat was a puppy and tried to mother it which the rat was not happy about but they did get along. I'm more worried about how the chihuahua will act around them, he has only been around other dogs. Does this breed get along with other animals.. I've read a lot of different things and I'm very confused. I just want to give all of the animals a good home, and make sure everyone is very happy
When i rescued my Chi four years ago, he was around 3 - 4 years old. At the time, i also had a 55 lb Rottie/Shar Pei mix who was a very gentle dog (rescued at age 2) and three cats (also rescues). The Chi took about a month to totally adjust to me and the others pets in the house. He became the larger dog's buddy after me and lays with the cats. He also had a period of mourning when the other dog passed a month and a half ago at age 16. I feel that it is all in how you treat your animals and how you introduce them to each other.
any dog will chase and kill a bird or rodent. it is instinctive. It should be fine if rat and bird are housed in secure cages.
I own two chihuahuas, a lab, a german pinscher AND an american bulldog. (similar to a pit bull but taller). You should see my little 6 pound chi playing with my 85 pound AmBull. Nina (the chi)bullies 'poor' Ripple terribly and they get along like mother and daughter. If properly introduced you should have no problem..
I have 7 chihuahuas in my home. They get along great with one another when raised from puppies together, but not other animals. Chihuahuas were also used as ratters for a long time, so I would especially discourage trying to get them to make friends. Also, most chihuahuas are loyal to only one master. This is going to make it difficult for the daog to adjust to you alone being it is an adult already.

How will I know if my t cup chihuahua is really a t cup if it is still a puppy.
depending on how old the chihihuahua puppy is, if your puppy is over a pound at 8 weeks it is not going to stay small. breeders will tell you that their puppie is a teacup! just to get more money from you. they will also tell you that the puppie is older than what it is so they can say look how small it is for three months old? when it is really 8 weeks old, and their is no way to tell unless you are experienced with small chihuahuas! i had to learn the hard way! but! now I know how to look and see if the puppie is really a teacup or toysize! at 12 weeks old wigh your puppie! and for example if your puppie weighs 1.5 pds double the number in weight! you will be looking at a 3.5pd chihiuahua give or take a couple of onces! as long has you do not over feed your puppie with human food! keep on a good dry food,
TEAPCUP is not a vaild classification for a toy size dog. The term is often used by unreputible breeders to sell sickly runts, representing thes as RARE AND OF MORE VALUE than a 3 to 6 lb Chihuahua ( which is in the normal range). Often times these breeders will breed sickly runt to sickly runt to attempt to keep the pup size dangerously small.I would avoid anyone selling a Chihuahua they describe as TeaCup. And PLEASE, research and become knowledgable about the breed before adopting any animal.

I have had long-coat Chihuahuas for over 20 years. I just adopted one from the Humane Cociety. He is around 7 yrs old. His coat is very curly. I have never seen a coat like that before. Is it common? He is a purebred. Thanks for any info.

what type of food would you recommend for chihuahuas so that they won't gain too much wait.
I feed mine Iams dry dog food for small dogs. I have found that Iams keeps them from getting hot spots and helps with their skin. I keep her food in her bowl so that if she needs it, it is available. I have done this with other animals and the vet also agrees with me. I also give her wet food right now as she started losing weight because she is cutting her premanent teeth and has some problems with eating the dry food.

Can any advise me why hes behaviour has changed all of a sudden, I love him but dont know what to do.

My chihuahua puts off a lot of body heat. You put here in a blanket with you and she'll cook you out of the blanket. My other chihuahua dosent put off nearly half the heat as the other. The dog acks happy. She just puts off a lot of heat Why? Anybody else have or know of a chihuahua doing this?
She is a inside dog. My other puts off very little body heat. The one that puts off the body heat has very little hair on her stomach and she is fixed. I don't belive the ears are doing anything except helping her hear!
Well,Chihuahua's radar dish-like ears help put off excess body heat,so maybe his ears are just putting off the heat it probably got from playing outside or something. But are you leaving your Chihuahua outside for a long time?Beacause that can be the reason why your chihuahua is putting off so much heat.

How can I get my chihuahua to stop peeing on her bed?
Take her out or let her go outside shortly after feeding. how long after feeding depends on your dog. Some of them wont be ready for an hour to go, but mine goes almost immediately after eating. Plan potty trips around feeding times, its only logical. If you use puppy pads, then everytime it goes in the bed, tell it No firmly and place it on the pad. It may take several times but it will get it eventually and go on the pad. if you use a pad, have it placed in the same spot every day and always available.

My chihuahua seems to have really dry flacky skin. Is there something I can put on her that will help? Is this normal?
Add fish oil to it's diet. You can get the capsules for people in the vitamin section of the pharmacy and poke a hole in them w/a pin and squirt it on thier food. They love it! Also, don't bathe them unless you NEED to, as you are removing much of the natural oil in thier coat. Hope that helps!
Yes, its normal. There are special shampoos for that skin condition for dogs, try that.

I have a 2lb chihuahua and she seems to have patchs of hair loss. The vet does not know what it could be. is there something I can do
I have a chihuahua that is one year old. When she was six months she started loosing patches of hair. The patches were not irritated and she didn't bother with them. She had several visits to the vet until we finally had it diagnosed as Demideptic (?) Mange. We were alarmed. The vet said it wasn't due to the dog being dirty, all dogs are exposed to the parasite when they are nursing. Sometimes the pup doesn't have enough resistance to fight off the parasite and it takes hold. The vet had to do a skin scraping to confirm the diagnosis. She was prescribed a few medicated dips (a little traumatic), but once the parasites were gone her hair patches grew back and she now has a beautiful coat.

I have a 4.3 pound chihuahua and a 11 week old should I use a harness or a collar for them?
Harnesses seem to be the better choice for Chi's, as they sometimes have throat issues that would be exacerbated by a regular collar.

How many times can a chihuahua have puppies? I have a three year old female chihuahua and her previous owner said she had been pregnant four times before and we believe that she is pregnant again...
My family has had chihuahuas for generations, they can keep having them until 1) you get her spayed or a male is still present or 2) they get so old. You will know when they are getting too old to have puppies because their usual litter of 2 or 3 will decrease ( or more of the litter will die than normal). Once they get so old their chance of dying during birth increases. If you don't want puppies get her spayed.

Post Response
my long hair chihuahua only hase one to two puppies at a time is this normal
Yes! Any more than 3 and its not a full blood chihuahua, it would be a mix. But full bloods are only supposed to have between 1-2 or 3.

I have a 4.3 pound chihuahua and a 11 week old should I use a harness or a collar for them?
Harness is probably better. If you do not know how to train a dog to walk properly on a coller it will just keep trying to run after things even if it chokes them. Dogs have a one track mind. So a harness will offer better control and less danger.

this is the first time that my chihuahuas are mating how long does it take they been stuck together for 45 min and would she get pregnant for being her first time and if she does how long does a chihuahua dog stays pregnant
Yes she can get pregnant the first time. They can stay pregnant for around 2 months. You may not see it at first because they are so small but keep checking and eventually you will see her tummy grow.

I am thinking of getting a chihuahua puppy. He has been home raised with other dogs.(pug size) I have three adult dogs, two medium (20 lbs) and one big (154 lbs, who thinks he's 20 lbs.) My question is: Will he get along with the other dogs, since he has been exposed to other types of dogs since birth. (he is 10 weeks old)
I have two great danes and a chihuahua that weighs 6lbs. We had the Chihuahua first and got the great danes as puppies. Zoe our chihuahua has always been the boss and has not gotten hurt. She barks when she is in the room so they know exactly where she is. If they are all on the bed together they snuggle and lick each other and it is very cute. I think it all depends on the teperment of the dogs and there sex. Males have alfa problems especially chihuahua. We had a alfa male chihuahua and he did not like other males that did not back down to him other males and ened up getting killed by another male bigger dog.
Big dogs don't know their weight and can hurt your chi accidentally. I do not suggest leaving your chi with them unsupervised. if you're just thinking about it now and have not gotten one, I do not suggest getting one for your household. You should stick with medium sized dog. Also, chihuahuas are often afraid of larger dogs and it will make their little lives miserable.
Please keep a close eye on the little guy around bigger dogs, for they do not know there own weight and can sit on or run over and hurt a tiny chi accidentally

My chi always loses her hair on her forehead when she's stressed. Make sure your chi is calm, well fed, warm, gets PLENTY of attention, and it wouldn't hurt to get a check up. The first time my dog did that, we freaked lol
No, Take him to the vet

I have a sweet 7 week old applehead. He is mostly white with some tan on his head, his fur is sort of long, but his skin is pink.I am having so much trouble with fleas on him. All flea shampoos and drops, collars are for 12 weeks or older. what can I use or do to help my pore babby without making him ill?
Pert Plus Shampoo. I have used it on 5 day old kittens with no ill effects. It kills fleas and won't hurt him.
Do you keep him inside? If so you may have a flea infestation in your home. They can be in your carpet or furniture. Treat your pet and your home both for fleas. If he is outside then the answer is obvious.

how much puppies do chihuahau's have
1-3 sometimes 4. Not more than 4 usually or it is a sign of it being a chihuahua mix.

How often should you feed a 6 week old chihuahua puppy?
He should be fed no less than 4 times a day. You can take it down to 3 times when he is around 12-16 weeks then down to twice a day from around 7 months

I have a blue and tan Chihuahua. He is looseing his hair in spot. The vet. gave me something to put on his food to put the fattie acid back in his body. It go away and then come back. What else do I need to do?
My dog was losing his hair and the vet told me he need to be nurtured so we had him nurtured and his hair came back and he is beautiful now. He doesn't lose his hair anymore.
They sometimes have a genetic defect - where they lose their hair, some or all of it.
tell the vet what is going on with it going away and coming back. Maybe he can check for a different problem

I have a 7 week old apple head. I have never had a dog this small. I have a german shepard. I'm worried about what to feed him. What is the best food for him at this age.
Chihuahuas can be picky about their food because their mouths & teeth are so small. My chihuahua won't even touch dog food because even the smallest puppy bites are "too big" so I have to give her cat food (dry) which she loves. vet says its okay as long as its not making her sick and she is eating. If you're concerned about proper nutrition there are dog vitamins but you should consult a vet before getting them.
7 weeks? any brand of small bite puppy food. Then, when the puppy is around a year, you can go to reagular dog food, but it still needs to be small bite for this breed. They have a hard time chewing the big stuff.

My Chihuahua female dog had puppies like a week ago and it's her first time to be a mother and my first time to breed a chihuahua. My question is when do I give vacines to the three pups she delivered?
To make the right choices for chihuahua or any pups/dogs, you should always ask your veterinarian. Breeders do many different types of immunizations and various times, ranging from 2 weeks, on. Also, some people don't give their chihuahua's certain shots, such as lepto or corona, etc. Some don't give any shots til 8 weeks. Also, it's always best to investigate and learn all you possibly can before owning or breeding any breed.
Post Response
how many puppies can one have?
If it has more than 3 or 4, its not full blood. End of story.
They can have only one, or up to six, depending on how many eggs your female ovulated. The smaller females tend to only have one or two, while the bigger females can have larger litters.

i gave my chihuahua a bath, now her puppies wont feed, will they smell her milk again?
When they are hungry, they should. If not, try squeezing a small amount of milk out of the teat, and that should do the trick.

I have brother and sister chihuahua's this is her first heat I came home from work yesterday and they were stuck together. What will happen to her and or what will happen to the puppies... what will they be like ... help I very scared for her and the pups..
The first heat is definately too young to be having puppies, they are still babies themselves, and sometimes don't take good care of the puppies. And then on top of it, brother and sister should never be bred. It can cause health issues and deformities. I suggest getting her spayed a.s.a.p. If you plan on breeding her, then it is possible that she didn't take with that breeding, but that isn't a guarantee. It is very hard to keep males and females apart when housed together. The males are very clever at finding ways to get to the females. If you are not an experienced breeder, then toy breed dogs are not a good place to start!! There is the chance that she will have to have the pups by c-section, which is very spendy. Then there is the care of the babies. They have to be kept warm and their weight monitored daily to be sure that they are gaining weight. Toy breed puppies are not like bigger breeds and are very fragile when it comes to their health. I suggest that you spay and neuter your dogs.

i have a litter of chihuahuas that are 3 weeks old, can i bathe them yet, mom is not wanting to clean them anymore? and if i can is it safe to bathe them in a dish detergent like joy?
I would not if I were you use a detergent like Joy. You can just rinse them or use special puppy shampoos (found in some pet stores or at your vet clinic). Some people have used human baby shampoo but the results are variable. Some puppies did fine, others got hair and skin abrasions.

It sounds very much like your puppy has an allergy - possibly a food allergy. Take her back to the vet as soon as possible.

at what age does a chiuahua start changing its teeth?
I found this in WikiAnswers. ''Around 4 to 5 months of age, puppies will start to lose thier ''baby teeth'' and thier permanent teeth begin to grow in. Puppies lose thier teeth in a specific order: first the smaller front teeth come out, then the premolars, molars and finally the canine teeth come out. Most of the time teeth fall out while eating/playing/etc so they are often swallowed.''

I am the new mommy of a 9 week old Chihuahua and I am wondering what is the BEST and MOST SUCCESSFUL way of house training for such a small dog. My last dog was a sheltie/lab, so the conventional method of a spank won't work on a baby like my Dittimus
I had good success with the puppy pad's ( sometimes she missed the target by an inch or two) but she took to it right away, It really comes down to how often you give your puppy access to the place you want her to go.
We potty trained our CHI by letting him out in the back yard when we put our bigger dog out. Both are inside dogs so they do their business at the same times. We reward them with pinches of turkey/franks. As they look forward to this reward they now let us know when they need to go.
I suggest to all new owners of puppies that the pad or litter box train their new babies. Just take them to their pad after eating, when first waking up, etc. After they go there a few times, they will usually return to the same area within a few days. That's why you don't want them picking out a favorite spot on your carpet, as once they go there, they will ususally return to it due to the scent. Make sure they go where you want them to the first few days and the scent will draw them back to that area. Giving them a tiny treat as soon as they go on the pad reinforces their appropriate behavior.
POTTY YOUR PUPPY VERY OFTEN. THEY DONT HAVE GOOD BLADDER OR BOWEL CONTROL UNTIL ABOUT 4 MONTHS OLD, OR AFTER, AND MALES CAN TAKE LONGER TO POTTY TRAIN. STAY CONSISTENT AND PATIENT! 1= TAKE A PUPPY OUT EVERY 1 TO 2 HOURS. 2= TAKE PUPPY OUT AFTER MEALS 3= TAKE PUPPY OUT AFTER PLAY OR AFTER A FEW MINNUTES OF PLAY (10 MINNUTES?) 4= TAKE PUPPY OUT AFTER THEY WAKE UP, IN THE MORNING AND AFTER NAPS 5= TAKE PUPPY OUT DIRECTLY BEFORE YOU PUT THEM TO BED. ---- IF THEY DON'T "GO" AT THESE TIMES THEN TRY IT AGAIN SHORTLY AFTER. ---- PICK A SPOT WHERE YOU WANT YOUR PUPPY TO "GO" AND TAKE HER THERE EVERYTIME. ---- IF YOUR PUPPY BECOMES TOO DISTRACTED TO GO POTTY, EITHER TAKE HER OUT ON A LEASH UNTIL SHE GOES..OR..START TAKING HER TO A DIFFERENT SPOT WITH LESS DISTRACTIONS. be prepared to reinforce when winter starts even if they are trained at that time. they cant handle the cold like other dogs and their feet can freeze VERY quick, so sometimes they will sneak and go in house or on porch a few times at the onset of the cold season.
For small breed dogs they actually make litter boxes now that are very easy to train a dog to. Or you could even try the potty training pads. I have two house Chihuahuas that wont even walk outside, they are definite indoor doggies and they use potty pads. I change them every day.
go for praising and giving treats when they go to the bathroom outside, and scold them [not hit] and then put them directly outside after they use the bathroom inside. they will eventually associate going outside as potty time

I have a four week old chihuahua. At what age do they drink water and eat food. The mother is still feeding them at the time.
I, too, start puppies eating gruel made from the hard kibble blended with warm water at 3 weeks. While momma is out going potty, babies eat their fill of it. Then momma comes back and finishes it, and cleans the babies as they can make a considerable mess, falling headfirst into the platter, stepping in it, etc. By 4 weeks old they have their heads in the food bowl but ususally don't get good enough teeth to crack the kibble until about 5 weeks old. As soon as I see them eating hard food, I stop the soft food. Mommas usually start weaning around 6 weeks, certainly by 7 weeks, and puppies have been eating entirely on their own for over a week before they go to new homes at 8 weeks.
8 weeks is very incorrect! I raise Chihuahuas and I start my puppies on canned food at 3 weeks. If not, they will start trying to eat the mothers dry food around that time. At 4 weeks my puppies are usually helping themselves to the dry food. There should be dry food with them and available to them at all times. Try some good puppy canned food, I would be willing to bet your puppy will dig into it. Feed it away from the mother or the mother will try to eat it all before the puppy can. Some mothers will even growl at the babies for trying to eat from her bowl.
puppies don't usually start eating puppy food until around 8 weeks. that's when most people wean them off of their mother

Have the ears come up yet? You can use breathrite strips, cut in half. Make sure the inside to the ear is clean & dry. Rubbing acholhol should do the trick.
They will come up around the time your puppy stops teething.

Is there such a thing as an Apple Head Chihuahua?
Yes, the apple head Chihuahua has the domed head and shorter snout. This is the standard for the breed. This is how a Chihuahua is supposed to look. The deer head Chihuahua came about from breeders breeding inferior dogs and they came up with the name "deer head" to make them seem like something special, they are really just a poor quality dog and do not fit the standard for the breed.
Not all Chi's have "Apple Heads". Some have a slimmer profile called a "Deer Head or Deer face". Apple Head represents the round dome and forhead of the their head, making the head look like a little apple. Most Apple Heads have shorter noses too, making their heads look even bigger. The Deer Headed Chi's have a bit longer nose and a slimmer head, not so round.
Yes. That is the way all their heads are shaped.

i own a chihuahua of 4 months ,i took to the vet he has diarea and vomiting. he gave him meds. but hes just getting worst. now his direa is more watery and blood like. please respond i am very worried and scared.
This definately sounds like Parvo ... but could also be coccidia - The vet needs to test RIGHT AWAY! I had a sweet baby girl Chi that started vomiting & having bloody liquid like stools & lost her in just 48 hours. The vet I had taken her to said it was coccidia from food change & in a few days she would be fine - he did not test for Parvo because she was already 1 year old. I later found out from another vet that with the Chihuahua age does not matter when it comes to things like Parvo - Full grown these dogs are the size of an average puppy & they are MUCH more likely to get very sick & even die from even the most minor illnesses.
I had a 9-month-old male that showed the same symptons and my vet immediately tested for parvo which was negative. Another test revealed pancreatitis caused by a change in food. You may have your vet test for pancreatitis.
My puppy had the same problem diarrhea blood in his stool. Took FOUR different fecals at four different times all came up negative, Than it came up mPositive, Be aggressive and keep bringing nasty stool samples The parasites are not always shedding . If they are not shedding they do not show up in the fecal. Good LUCK
This happened to my puppy too; the vet said she had an infection, which she probably got from smelling something she shouldn't have smelt(other doggy poop). Definitely take to the vet, will need antibiotics.
that sounds like parvo but could be coccidia did you puppy get better yet, need to have the vet do a fecal that is the best way to detect what is going on with your puppy, good luck
Please take him to the vet asap. They can go down very fast. Make sure that he has Nutra-stat to keep his sugar up. Has he had all his shots? He could have parvo. You can give him pepto bismol and see if this helps him. don't let this go on for long, you could lose him

I am the owner of a 9-week old chihuahua that I have had for a week now. I put him in a crate at bedtime. How do I get him to stop whining all night?Any help would be appreciated.
you put him close to a ticking clock that help them relax and also in a warm place.
I have a 1 yr old female chi. I thought having her sleep in a bed with me in my bed was the right thing to do but later she started showing signs of aggression and a trainer told me to get her out of my bed! The first night she had until 11pm to stop whining and then we had to put her in another room. The next night she slept through the night. Now, she puts herself to bed around 10pm. It's so funny! She's got a pull-out couch and her blanket in there and she loves it. In the morning when my husband goes to work, he takes her out to do her business and she races as fast as she can up into our bed. That's her snuggle time and she knows it. It's really hard to hear them cry, but stick with it and be firm! They are very smart little things and will fool you. Good luck!
i have a year old chihuahua and he sleeps in a crate just fine! I got him use to it by when he was little i would let him snuggle with me and when he was a sleep i would put him in the crate along with a bed and a warm blanket. I would say night night time when i placed him in there and just pet him for a few then shut the crate. Dont force him itno the crate because that makes them feel as if they are in trouble and give him a treat once he goes in on his own so he knows he did well. The crate is in the same room as me. Now a year later he doesnt wine and when i say night night time he knows its time to go to the crate. He loves it! It is his little home and His bed and Blanket!
My chichuachua is 1 yr now he whines all night. but if he sleeps with any of my other 5 dogs he will be fine yours may be lonely, most chichuachuas have seperation angziety.
if you cant let the puppy sleep with you i would put his or her cage right next to your bed that way the puppy is closer to you and feels more secure because thtz what the puppy wants.i tried this with my whiny chihuahua and it worked perfectly...make sure not to put your puppy in there until you go to sleep because he or she will feel eager to get out and be with you where ever you are at if your still up wandering around and doing whatever...but if tht doesnt work keep him or her next to your bed still but stay up with him a little while not all night just until he adjust to the comfort of sleeping in his or her cage
I have tried putting an old-fashioned wind up clock in under the blanket..the tick tick comforts and may possibly resemble mother's heartbeat.
i have a chihuahua too and when i put her to bed in her crate i put a towel under her in the crate and if u keep her in the same room with u like almost all the time she will be quite and go to sleep p.s try it
It all depends on the dog, my Chihuahua was absolutely fine sleeping by himself in a crate as long as the crate was in the same room as me, however my Cairn Terrier was a totally different story. If the crying doesn't get better after a blanket and a few days, for your own sanity get a pet bed instead.
Just let him sleep with you. I have 3 of them and now that they are at a older age , they all sleep in their own bed right next to us.
Get him a nice furry blanket and a soft stuff animal. You can put a towel over the front of the kennel so he thinks it time to go to bed, don't go to him when he cries, when he stops then go to him, if you go when he cries, he is training you. Remember that he is lost and doesn't know where he is, just give him time and let him know you love him. They are known as blanket dogs, so make sure that he stays warm in the blanket, this is all year long. Make sure he has his blanket. You'll have to look for him under it, so please be careful you don't sit on him.
