My chocolate Cocker Spaniels coat is turning white on some areas of her body. Any reasons why?

I have a 19 month old am cocker spaniel and having skin issues. continually licking and scratching. he develops little dry crusty spots and tummy sometimes turns red. ears are no problem. vet has had him on a hypoallergenic diet but the problem still comes and goes. any suggestions??

My wife is alergic to most dogs, is it a good idea to get a cocker?

No, you don't want a cocker if allergies are involved they shed like crazy. Try getting a Poodle or Portuguese water dog if you want low allergy problems. A designer dog like Labradoodle, Goldendoodle or Cavachon can also be good for allergies.
Labradoodles and Poodles are the best for low shed, low dander coat that is made of hair, not fur. I know of a boy with such severe allergies that he takes breathing treatments daily but can bury his face in his Labradoodle's coat and not have a single problem.

How many puppies does a Cocker Spaniel have in a litter?

My cocker spaniel continually licks her mouth, constantly licking all the time, any suggestions?

Licking is an unconcious behavior, she is probably stressed. And very likely has something to do with separation anxiety.

My Cocker Chloe is 2 and when she gets excited she pee's or when we correct her. How can I get her to stop!!

I have (2) cockers which both had the same issue. I was told by my vet they would grow out of it, they did not. My groomer suggested we let the dogs say hi first, asking that our guests please not bend over them until the dog relaxes a moment, now I have no further issues with my cockers peeing on themselfs or anyone.

If I know someone is coming over I put my dog out to pee. If it's unexpected I greet the guest & immediately take my dog out to pee.

we adopted a lovely 2 year old cocker spaniel last year, she has the same problem. We tried having company ignore her but she would just get up on the furniture to get to them and piddle there. Our blessing has been a reusable doggy diaper. She suprisingly doesn't piddle in that (go figure) just takes a few seconds to put on and she can greet company immediately

Submissive urination can be controled by medication. Ask your vet about it. She should only need it while shes young.

I have 2 females, 1 that is 12 and the other is 2. You really can't do much to get them to stop. I do however tell people as they enter the house (and people that visit often know) not to talk or pet the girls until they calm down a bit.
The breed is commonly known for this issue.
My next house will have laminant flooring! Good Luck!

My Cocker likes to lick EVERYTHING, all the time. What are possible reasons for such behavior? Thank you for your help!

I have 2 Cockers and my girl was the same way, I tried everything to get her to stop, but the only thing that worked for me was to give her a little flick on the nose when she was licking, not hard, just enough to puzzle her. Now she doesn't lick people or anything I don't want her to. You have to be consistant. As for a reason, don't know, but could be, habit, nervous, submissive, or obsesive behavior??

My Cocker Spaniel poops quite often, is this normal for this breed of dog? I have changed his food to 3 different kinds thinking maybe it's that but nothing seems to help.

my cocker spaniel keeps shaking, she was the runt of the litter but has never been shaking like this before, at first we thought she was just doing it because she was excited but now shes shaking almost all the time. shes almost two years old. do you know why she is shaking?

my cocker does this when any changes are made in the household like redecorating also when he knows we are getting ready to leave the house and he is staying behind he also does not like loud voices if the kids get arguing he starts to shake..

Our cocker spaniel started shaking when her kidneys started to fail - either the low hematocrit or rising urea nitrogen can cause it. Please see your vet for bloodwork.

how many different colored coats do cocker spaniels come in?

Hi i my english cocker spaniel is 6 weeks and after his deworming & first vaccination worms are still coming out when he passes motions. Any suggestions?

When do female cocker spaniels get their first period?

My Lola get it when she was 7 months. The next was almost a year after.

I recently purchased two buff male cockers. One seems to have a heavier, coarser and longer coat than the other. Will the silky one with the shorter coat develope the longer feathery coat on legs & belly eventually? They are 11 weeks old.

I am having my cocker spaniel flown from Alaska to Maine...should be approximately 15 hrs...I am worried about the stress this will cause. Has anyone flown their dog for this many hours or more who could offer some suggestions? Thanks

I have an english cocker spaniel having skin problems. vet given antibotics. works in the initial stage but not really useful after a period. Red spots all over the body, skin peeling off like dandruff, especially from the red spots. tried a few off the shelf solutions but useless. pls kindly advice what can i do?

I'm going to second the thyroid issue. My cocker has hypothyroidism which is easily treated with a daily pill--$9 a month.
My parents' cocker has Cushing's disease, which has also contributed to some skin problems in their cocker. This is a little more expensive--$60 per month in medication. but is has worked very well!

After many vet visits I tried an old solution my father would use...he told me 1/3 Listerine, 1/3 baby oil, and 1/3 water. Shake in sprayer bottle over area and then rub in. It worked for me. Good Luck.

We had similar problems with our Cocker. It turned out to be a thyroid issue. Once on regular thyroid supplement the skin issues resolved completely.

my cocker spaniel 6month old puppy lost 3 teeth so far and why it is not hurting her but it worries me.

all puppies will lose their teeth as they grow older and bigger. think of it as a child losing his baby teeth to make room the adult teeth...in dogs, their teeth are like sheaths when they are a puppy so that as they grow, the outer tooth falls out and is replaced by the permanent tooth. we normally don't see the teeth as they tend to swallow them, but when we do it can be cause for concern because we don't associate a puppy with losing their teeth

i am getting ready to purchase a balck an white 6mnth old cocker spaniel, he is ckc registered an the owner say he is shy but never have shown signs of bitting. i have children is this a good pup for us?

we had a cocker spaniel who was shy also, but after we got him home and game him his space to adapt he came out of his shell. You just have to be patient and loving. Use calm, low voices to reasure them. We got out cocker when I was 6 months pregnant and after I had my son he was WONDERFUL with him. Still shy at times, but was NEVER agressive or skidish around my son. He actually became quite loving and protective of our son. So I wouldn't be afraid of it just because he's shy. Our cocker was the best we could ever ask for!

some dogs are shy, but if backed in a corner may snap at them if uncomfortable. However, cockers are great pets for children because of their high energy. But if you're looking for a more mellow and sweet, calm dog, DEFINITELY look into Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They are close to cockers in blood but temperment is much better in my opinion for older children. They bing alot of calm to a family.

My female cocker spaniels ( 1year old) urinaties on the beds of the females in my house, what should I do to stop this?

If your talking about female dogs, then probably your dog is marking her territory.

My Cocker Spaniel is constantly lickng, me, my other half, the carpet, the counch, the floor - anything he can get hold of. He has also been displaying strange behaviour such as looking at the ceiling and swinging his head around as if something is there and then half licking in fast succession (his own mouth/nose). Very strange. Vet wasn't sure.....
Any help would be gratefully received!

My cocker does the same thing except not the head turning. He just seems to be an overzealous licker. Oh and So sweet. Just seems to love licking .

sounds like an ear infection. You should take him to the vet to get checked

my cocker is scooting alot and licking his anus alot. i'm trying some hemorriod cream on him, i have had his glands secreted but might be full again, what do you suggest?

could be worms

Some dogs need to have their glands expressed more frequently than others. Taking him out to go to the bathroom as soon as you notice it may help. If he can express them on his own by going to the bathroom, this will save you some effort and/ or time. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just inconvenient.

hi, i'm meeting an owner of an american cocker spaniel that is 7 months old, my question is, what do i look for in healthy eyes,? and how much do they weigh at full adult hood?

I have an american cocker spaniel my problem is that he pees every time he gets excited around people what can I do to stop his submissive peeing?

ignore him (no touch, no talk, no eye contact) until he settles down.

I was recently asked to take in a Cocker Spaniel that was born in 98. Making him almost 11yrs old. Up to date with shots, house broken, friendly and sweet(has been around kids). His owner can no longer keep him due to an illness. If I don't take him he will go to a shelter. (Senior dog, you know what will happen!) I feel terrible, but I have four kids and I worry if it's a good idea for us. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have friends that have adopted the 'seniors' and have had a great deal of pleasure from them. The older dogs aren't usually wanted, but they have a lot to give and you don't have the puppy issues.

Well if he is good around kids then go for it. I have one and he is awesome with kids. So i think you should go ahead and take him in. And if he is that old then you don't want that bad thing to happen so yeah, go for it.

I am very dishearten . I purchased this most beautiful cocker spaniel pup and I am giving it all the best care. All of a sudden, he is vomiting and having loose stool. The vet took blood sample from him and called us and told us that our pup is anemic and that we should buy him iron tablets. This just doe not sound right. What should I do?

I have a 2 & 1/2 month old cocker spaniel who weighs barely 1 kg and a few grams. No AIHA but quite anemic. My vet says he might be the runt of the litter. He hardly has any height or weight on him. Is he a miniature cocker spaniel?

I just got a cocker spaniel from a relative. He had an abusive first owner and second owner put him out in a muddy yard no grooming. He is nervous but affectionate. He has one fore leg that he has scratched all the hair from and 2 spots on his rear that have no hair. Please tell me any advice I know nothing about cocker spaniels. I have had to cut off his beautiful ear hair due to mattes. His legs are next but I try not to do too much in 1 day. Any help is appreciated.

It will take time for him to get used to you. Take him to the groomer and get him a nice haircut. I genenral groomers are well trained and know how to handle any dog. Once you develop trust between your new puppy, obidience class is another option. You will really see the difference in your dog behaviour. If the dog was abused and left alone in a back yard, you will need to socialize your doggy with other dogs and people.
Have fun spending time with your puppy!!!

My 15 month old, spayed female, tries to "ride" everyone all the time. I know it's a dominance thing, but my question is: is it normal for her to urinate and pass little feces balls while doing it, or is it a health problem? Her vet has no answers. She gets regular Anal cleaning with grooming.

I suggest you go to a certified trainer. If you stop the action...it's likely that the urinating and feces dropping will go with it.

My cocker spaniel is 5 months. The man that breeds the dogs say that he is a miniature cocker. Everyone says that he is getting bigger. How can I tell if its true???

Hello!
I have a 6 month old cocker spaniel. She is very smart and sweet.
But it seems that she has a problem with younger children when they try to pet her (childrens 5 and younger). She growls and tries to bite them. What can I do??

cockers are very shy dogs if you can get the kids to understand the idea try giving the kids treats and tossing them to the dog so the dog relates the small kids with treats after awhile she should warm up to them just be very careful.

We have a 2 year old cocker. He has two problems. he constamtly is scooting across the floor due to anal gland issues. we get them expressed every two weeks (sometimes more) and it keeps coming back. Second problem is he has tremendously itchy feet, belly and near his tail. He is on a science diet food due to a urinary issue. any advice for us? the vet bills are adding up...

I have a 10 years old cocker who has allergies you might want to take them to a dog dermatolagist and have them tested for allergies other than the food. I've been doing this for half her life now. keep a record of the time of the year the itching starts its usually spring and fall. I thought it was her food to. Good luck!

Have you tried NUTRO Food?
It is specially formulated for allergy sensitive pets---100% Guaranteed--even for taste!
And it is all human grade food--
The itching is usually a sign of a food allergey--and corn is a big allergy trigger---Science Diet, I think has 2 different types of corn wihtin their first 3 ingredients---

i have a cocker spaniel , is he almost 8 years old,,, he has really bad ear problems and im constanly going to the vet to get medicine. is there something i can do at home to help with his ear infections... the medication that the vet gives only works when he is on it,, and as soon as it runs out,, it comes back

my cocker developed an ear problem while we were camping one weekend I tried antifungal cream that I found in our first aid kit he immedialtly stopped ithching and after the weekend the infection had gone away. My vet said to continue what I was doing his ear was healthy looking

Hi, I too had a cocker with horrible ear infections and I have found the cure. I soent tons of money on medicines prescribed by my vet until I went to zimfamilycockers.com and read about their ear medicine cure. It is awesome. I used it for one week and he has never had ear problems again. Now I use it on all my cockers every tiem Ibathe them and their ears stay good smelling and clean.

We had this problem as well. Each week we would sprinkle powerder in his ears.. usually baby powder or corn starch and that seemed to keep him cleared up. With our cocker we use UBAvet. Its a liquid that we warm and put in her ears once a week. We got it from our vet but you can likley buy it on line. In three years she has not had an ear infection so I swear by this.

I've got a puppy from a recent litter that is a black white and tan. He also has big patches of silver on him. Others out of the same litter also have some silver on them. Could you tell me if that changes what color that is? Or what you call that? Cheryl

I would have to see a picture to be sure but it sounds like you might possibly have a merle cocker. You can go to www.merlecockers.com and read more about merle cocker spaniels.

ive seen an american cocker spaniel at a dog show that is party colours but also has silver on it and people seem to think its fine, even though it doesnt win alot and is very ugly but its perfectly healthy. if the kennel club dont mind then it should be fine

It might bea vitemin defitionsy or just the changing nature of your dog's coat. It shouldn't be anything too seriouse but just to be sure talk to your vet. :)

Hi there,Our two and a half year old female is turning silver too. I've never seen anything like it. She was solid black with just a few white wiskers on her chin. If you ever find out please let me know..

my pup cockerspaniel vey cute he is 8 weeks ol and is bitting and grawling like he is playing but i need to know if this is a big concern what i can do to control it because he play bits my small kids and i heard their great with kids he loves them but i need to know if he is doing it now willl he do it when hes older i dont want him to bit n-e one when he gets big so help people how do i nip this in the but while he is big because i love him alot by the way he is a male and his name is T Mac!!!help

most americans do it, give it a month and they will grow out of it, they are only playing bless them.

our american cocker spaniel connie is 8 weeks old and she does exactly the same and has even taught our golden retriver who is 8 weeks old to do exactly the same, i dont mind them doing it but if they go to far i do tell them NO without being aggressive, but they are young and they are getting the feel of things, give it a few weeks then start being more on the ball about it.

Talk to a trainer and get the little bites under control. My female did the same. As soon as I felt teeth on my skin, I would stop playing and pull my hands away from her, if she continued (usually she would)then I would calmly close and hold her mouth and say wrong. She is now 13 months old and we don't have any play biting problems. I had to be consistant and get it every time. I got this tip from our puppy trainner.

My cocker spaniel has a crust on one side of nose is this something that needs to be treated by a vet?

My cocker had the same thing and how I solved the problem was by cleaning her nose after she ate because she would get food on it and didn't get it clean. I never had the problem again. To get rid of a bad build up at first use a warm wet compress to the area and when it is soft enough it will come of with a little help. You may need to put antibiotic ointment on it if it has been on there for a while. This will heal quickley. Hope this helps, Kim

it may be because she cant lick it and its drying up, our american cocker had it straight across the top of her nose but she was find with it. the vet didnt subscribe anything so i believe it should be ok

Our cocker spaniel has become increasingly plagued with the crusty skin associated with cocker spaniels. I try to manage it with veterinarian supplied shampoo and food. Lately he seems to be "shivering" almost constantly and having difficulty jumping up or down and loses his hind quarter traction more easily. Is there a type of illness that plagues cockers or is this simply a question of age. I think he's only 7/8 years old so that doesn't seem logical to me. I'm just looking for some feed back - I hate to run him into the vet - stressful to him AND me...

Shivering can be a sign that the thyroid is out of whack. Ask your vet to do a simple blood test to determine if your dog has a hypo or hyper thyroid issue. Our old girl was diagnosed at age 11 or 12, and made it to 15 through daily maintenance drug (levyrothyroxin). (heart failure was the final insurmountable challenge for her)

one of my cockers had the same problems. He stopped walking and had to take him to a neurocenter for sugery. He recovered from that. Now, you may need to get a allergy blood test to find out what the problem is. No shampoos o different food helped my dog, every dog is different and a blood test is the best option. Until then, get some allergy pills from your vet. I do recommend Evo food, as seems to have a lower dose of dust mites.

regarding the difficulty jumping and traction, you should definelty have your dog evaluated by a neuro vet. our cocker had similar problems including the shaking which was due to him hurting. he got to the point he could barely walk. it turned out that he had a disk that had calcified and the ruptured. we were lucky to catch it when we did as he had imediate surgery and recovered perfectly.

Cocker Spaniels are a wonderful breed, but they require a lot of attention and grooming. I would take him to the bet immediately if he is having difficulty jumping up or losing traction as this could indicate a serious hip/back problem. The sooner the vet can determine what the problem is the better off both you and your precious pup will be. : )

Have you tried a good coal tar shampoo? It is good for cocker spaniels. Keep him brushed out, and check for any external parasites that he may be scratching at.I would also suggest NuVet vitamins. They are super wonderful for allergy / skin problems and take care of their internal organs as well.We raise Cocker Spaniels and all of our dogs get NuVet vitamins.

Hi,try Innova EVO food. Sounds like food algeries. Both of my dogs do great on this food. All skin issues gone! Hip/back problems are something else. they require a Vet's attention
