Dachshund Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

My two year old female dashy poops in the TV room in exactly the same spot every morning even though she has been let out earlier to do her business, any suggestions on why she does this and how to stop her?

We have a mini piebold who's 7 years old, weighs 13.5 lbs. For the last several days, he's been randomly whimpering when we touch him on his right back leg/rib stomach area. But when we push hard in strategic places to determine where the pain specifically is, we get no whimpering or negative reaction of any kind. Also, he's still playful and eating/drinking normally. Can someone please explain this and is it something we need to take him into the vet for?

My female dachshund named Hammy, humps everything. Is this normal?
I am not sure either. My dog has been doing that to.
Maybe dont' hump your bear in front of your dog.

I have a 4 month weenie dog, her exowner showered her with cloth detergent and know she has dry skin and hair loss in some of her body. I want to cure her, what should i do or buy to help her dry skin and hair loss?
You can use lotion on them like you would yourself. Just use a baby lotion and don't get it into their eyes.

We are thinking of adopting a mini dash. but wondering if they would get along with our other two pets, which are two femle cats?
The doxie is going to have a million times more energy and playfullness than the cats. My doxie has never given up on trying to get the cats to chase around with him, at most they have started to tolerate him. We run with him and he runs and plays with his stuffed animals every evening when the cats ignore him. He visits my daughters ranch and runs with her little dogs. I think he does about 25mph. I'd get 2 of them if I could. They have a lot of energy.

I have a 11yr old Miniature Dachshund and lately he's been having very bad breathing problems. Its almost like a snorting and hard time breathing sound but the thing is its mainly when hes laying down. Do you know why this is happening to him?? Is it a deadly thing? Thank you for your help.
We have a 4yr old Miniature Dachshund that we just recently rescued. When she came to us she couldn't breath through her nose most of the time and it was especially bad at night. This would cause her to hold her breath while she was laying down and wake up gasping for air which would make her cough and reverse sneeze ( which is like a snorting when they try to in-hail). We took her to a holistic vet and the Doctor gave her 2 different Chinese medicines: San Rent Tang Liquid and Lachesis Mutus. The first day after taking the medicine she was sneezing out massive amounts of mucus and 4-5days later she was sleeping through the night breathing through her nose with out caughing or snorting. If this sounds like the same thing your dachshund is going through I hope this info can help both of you and I wish you all the best!

My dachshund is 13 years old. Her name is Lucy. She has developed a large pustule under her eye. I have attempted to drain it and it produced a thick white substance at first. Now it is just producing a milky white liquid. i drain it and treat it with peroxide daily.. I am taking her to the vet as soon as possible.. I was wondering if anyone knows about what this might be.

My long haired dachshund, who is over 10 pounds, has ate most likely over half of my bag of chocolate covered pretzles. What can i do or give to her to ensure her safety?
the more expensive the chocolate the more dangerous it is. She might be fine but I would at least call and talk to the vet just in case since she is so little it could be worse on her

My dachshund is dappled and is 4 years old. He gets itchy red spots all over his body every once in a while and lately he has been shivering, sometimmes even if he is not cold...is there something wrong?
It could be "ATOPY". My dog had it. It;s a allergy.
you should take him to the vet immediately.

I bought a dachshund puppy that is all black except for his chest. It's white and has some spots inside the white markings. The breeder told me the father was a piebald. Could this be true? Is he really a black and tan with the missing gene? He's had a litter of pups with my black and tan. Some of them are the same markings, but soiled white. Is this normal. Did I get taken advantage of?
Does he look like a dachshund? Yes it is possible that he can be colored that way because of breeding for certain colors in recent years it is very possible. I didn't know any of this before hand I just learned this from trying to find out about dachshund heat cycles because I have a chihuahua dachshund mix mutt. Over all unless you want to shell out major cash for dna testing that will make you think twice about ever getting a dog you just have to go buy how he looks.

My male dachshund always smells bad. He is very well kept but seems to always have a bad odor. What to do? Note: It's not his ears!
Check it's butt.....
it could be anal glands that need to be emptied out. i have a mini dachshund that needs to get hers emptied once every 2 weeks. I can always tell when they are full cause she gets a bad smell.

Two weeks ago I got an eight week old female doxie. Within a week she had a rattling in her chest and both of her eyes were infected. The rattling has cleared up but both of her eyes are still infected. I clean them at least 2 to 3 times a day and put an antibiotic ointment on them. Is there anything more I can do to clear them up short of going to the vet?

My fifteen year old female dachshund has a balding spot on her back. Her skin seems dry but I am not sure if there is a condition common to this breed that I might not be aware of. I was just curious as to a treatment for her condition.

Yes if u want 2 kill ur dog!!!!!!!!
NO, Chocolate can be toxic and lethal to dogs. Since doxies are small this is even more true for them.
No dog is supposed to have chocolate EVER.

My 2 year old mini dachshund has red itchy spots on her stomach and towards her private parts and tail. Is there anything I can use from home to help? I do not have much money to spend to take her to the vet yet. I have seen a couple of fleas but I put Advantage on her at the beginning of the month. What do I do?

My 5year & 8month old doxie very suddenly developed a sore back (she was fine in the afternoon and sore the evening) took her to the vet got painkillers and he advised to keep her still for at least 4 weeks, the next morning she started showing signs of paralysis. WHAT can i do? I can not afford surgery since it is extremely expensive. She is not at all overweight. Please any advise will be appreciated.
Firstly, I feel so sorry for you. Take her back to the vet, and make sure it is what you think it is. Have you not got pet insurance? (This is a good idea in the future as they will cover this). If you don't have insurance, ask friends for help for your dog, parents, and you can always do something where people sponsor you? When my Doxie was diagnosed with a condition for which the surgery cost £2500 I did a sponsored walk (backwards around a park with buckets on my feet) I earned the money and he is healthy and happy now. People will help you if you show commitment to your pet! If I hear anyone needing sponsors I will help! Promise!

How can I train my 9 months old mini dachshund not to eat her poop?
Well, first of all. Is he/she potty trained. If so congratulations. My dog had the same problem. I suggest to clean it up. And if that is not an option (which I totally understand) there is some type of stuff you can feed him/she and when he/she poops it out she will not eat it. Like alot say, it takes training, but I can tell you are a great owner, if you already have her/him potty-trained.

My 3year old longhaired dachs has dry shin. We've taken hime to the Vet and rec'v shots for allergy, and have changed his foosd to a higher quality food. He continues to have dry skin and red itchy ears. What should i do??
My long haired female had the same problem. I figured out it was the wheat in the food. So i just changed her food. Bought a food with no wheat products. Now shes prefect. It took about 2 days to show signs of getting better. After about two weeks. No more itchy ears. Thanks God. Make sure treat have no wheat in them also. I hope this helps Good Luck
I had a Dachshund with the same problem! Of course, it may not be the same allergies but this is what I learned. First and most important will be his food. You need to feed a high quality food like Timberwolf or Solid Gold. The food must not contain any animal bi-products and the first ingredients should be meat. Bi-products are things like beaks and hair and other disgusting things you yourself would not want to eat! You will see a major improvement within weeks. Second will be his shampoo. You should be able to wash your dog daily without any side affects so long as your shampoo is natural, containing no chemicals of any kind. You will not find these types of products at your vet. Look at your local non-franchised pet stores or search natural shampoos for dogs on the internet. Last, and this was specific to my dog, but he definitely had allergies to grass and pollen. I gave him Benadryl in the spring and summer months. Just so you know, my own Vet gave my dog shots, pills and shampoos that only led to more problems, never fixing the initial problem. Hope this helps and good luck!

Is it possible for two Miniature Dachshunds that weigh under 11 pounds, both pedigrees full of Champions, produce a litter of puppies that will be 12-15 pound dogs? Does litter size have an effect on dog size?

Had my 7 month old female spayed. Was house traind before she had it done. Now peeing all over even on me and in my bed. She sleeps with me. Called spay clinci said had to express her blader before spaying. Give it a few days. Any one had this happen? Will it stop or should I take her to the vet?
I've never heard of this happening to an animal after spaying. Probbly best to take her to the vet just in case. Or you could call and inquire as to what the vet thinks, sometimes they will let you know if its seriou enough to bring her in over the phone. But better safe than sorry.

I have a 7 week old dachshund puppy that itches so bad he whines. My husband took him to the vet for a check up and asked about the itching and the vet checked him for "pests" (i.e. worms, fleas, ticks) he told him our puppy did not have pests and it might be a food allergy.. He did not seem to itch until 3 days after we got him home. The vet told my husband to keep an eye on it. I am planning on giving him a bath this afternoon and see if this helps with the scratching. How would I know if it was an allergy to grass, or laundry detergent, or food and etc. He does not have a rash or red spots or anything like that. If he might be allergic to laundry detergent, what detergent could I use?
It took me much reading on Internet to fix my dachshund's "dandruff" and itching.; Shampoo salicylic acid 2% in comnbination with Soluilized sulfur 2% cured her. I also add Lipiderm fish oil to her food daily. Her coat is beautiful now - shiny and free of flakes. I highly recommend one or both for your babies.
we add flax seed oil to our dog's food. check it out at heath food store. it worked great for us.
I too had a dog that scratched himself all the time. It took years before I finally realized he was allergic to many foods and grass! Make sure you are feeding a quality dog food with no by-products of any kind. I switched to a high quality food and this solved the majority of his itching. Because he was also allergic to grass, I gave him Benadryl in the Spring & Summer months.
try the laundry detergents they make for babies (Dreft? Woolite for babies, etc.)

My three year old dachshund had her first litter. She ONLY had 1 pup but its a stillborn. She still licked and loved on the pup trying to get that poor thing to react but we took it and buryed it. the problem is now sheis treating my husband like a pupand she whimpers and cries until she gets to be around him. she doesnt seem to stop whimper and crying. everything came out when she delievered. She isnt tender in the belly. Is that a normal thing for a dog to grieve their only pups loss? is it normal for her to treat my husband like that? please help.
very normal...I bred Mini-Doxies for several years. They usually don't have "just one" pup so it's very possible that she had another that died invitro. When that happens her body usually absorbs the dead pup(s) inside depending on the invitro age the pup(s) died inside her. Even if she only had the one, it's very normal for her to "mother" even other pets if you have any. If it was your husband that helped her (mostly) during her labor she may think that he "still has her pup". This will pass most likely after her milk dries up, and she starts a new cycle. The attachment to your hubby is more than likely that she thinks he has her pup, and she's trying to make sure that he is caring for it - or she could still be looking for the pup "on him" somewhere. It will pass. If she had had more than one she would still be looking, but her attention would have went to any other pups that she had. You may want to reconsider not having anymore litters with your Doxie. Her uterus (or several reasons) may be the cause of the stillbirth, and that she only had one pup. We never had less than 2-3, and as many as 6-7 pups per litter. Is she really tiny? There could be reasoning there as well. Another thing to remember, if you have another litter, is that you usually do have to help during labor (have a babies "snot bulb" ready to suck any fluid out of the new pup's nose (and mout if necessary). Also, I remember my husband giving several pups their first breath by covering his mouth over the pup's entir nose and mouth. Yes, if you are going to have a litter - there are many things you can do to help. The mom licking the pup is get circulation flowing and, also, get the ambiotic fluids off the pup, but many, especially first time bitches, need help to have their pups.
Yes it is normal for a dog to miss their puppy dearly, just like a lionees and her cub and also just like a mother and her baby. But I don't know about your husband, maybe you should breed her again for her new litter? Maybe she will stop?
Absolutely! My dachshund Sofie went through the same except she had 2 still borns. It's almost as if she is filling a void by taking care of "her family". Sofie now takes care of anything we put in front of her as if it was her baby pup.

My one year old dachshund lost a tooth. Is that normal at his age?
Yes it is. And to think about it, every human year is 7 years for a dog.

We are thinking of getting a doxi. 1st are they hard to house train? 2nd I have children 8 and 11 yo. How will the doxi be with them?
I have a nine month old baby girl. She has been housetrrained for a few months now with only the occasional accidents. I also have four kids all ten and under... She is thier baby as much as she is mine!!! Doxies are good with kids *my youngest was three when we got her*. They are easy enough to train, just remember to be consistent!
I have a 1 1/2 year old daschound that gets along great with my 2 kids, 6 & 4. He is also around my newborn nephew, 2 year old niece and 5 year old nephew. I think it just depends on how your kids are with the puppy.
doxie's can be hard to house train but if you get puppy training mats then train them to the garden .doxie's are good with older children.

My Doxie is 8 years old she has been breathing really hard. The vet says thyroid is low. Does anyone know of any other problems that would cause heavy breathing in this breed?

My 2 1/2 year old dachshund has one runny eye. It is her right eye and it looks like a little sleep in her eye but it is ther all day no matter how many times I wipe it away and her eye is a little bit red.
I hope this gives you some comfort. My doxie has watery eyes and he gets 'crusty' along his nose like a chihuahua or shih-tzu might get. My vet has always said that he has allergies of some kind. My doxie doesn't seem to be bothered by the runny eyes and it has turned into a bonding thing for me to keep his face clean. He's also more than happy to let me know when he doesn't want it cleaned, too.

I'm considering getting a doxie. how much do they shed?

I have a 5 month old doxie. He's been in excellent health since we brought him home. Two days ago I gave him a pork bone for the first time, he loved it. Then yesterday morning I noticed him drooling excessively. When he takes naps he'll awake drenched. He's still eating and drinking as normal, no problems with pee or pooh either. Could this be his new back teeth coming in? I noticed last week his baby teeth were gone and now his new front teeth are in. I've checked inside his mouth for any discoloration or signs of problems and I can't see anything. I'm wondering if I should take him to the vet?
I had the same issue with a dog years ago and after a very expensive vet visit and bill it seems the bone remnant was lodged in the roof/palate of the dogs mouth. There was some damage to the palate and back teeth. The vet said NEVER EVER give a dog or cat pork bones - they can splinter and are sharp as glass. I hope your dog is fine but I would take him to the vet immediately.

My four year old dachshund had a nasty green discharge coming from her left eye. We took her to the vet. They gave us medicated eye drops. To use for a week and we would come back in for a check up. The check up was on Monday and they told me she isn't making enough tears and needs to be on an ointment for the rest of her life. This is the first time she has had any problems is there anything else we can do for her?

my doxie had mites recently. He is bald. His hair is growing back but it is white.
go to the feed store and buy cattle Ivermectrin . Ivermectrin is the active ingredieant in Heartworm meds- you can use it instead of heartworm meds- it is equal to 1/10 cc = 11lbs of dog. I have been using it for years. It also will kill earmites- draw up a little in the syring and put some in ear, mix it around and let the dog shake it out and it will kill the ear mites right away- repeat once more in a few days . It also will kill ringworm. Your dog may have the disease where if they go thru stress , they loose their hair and then it doesnt grow back- cant remember the name but I had a line of dogs that came out of a puppy producer- they didnt show - didnt really know about what their lines produced - just bred dogs to sell and baldness ran in the line- I fixed most of the puppys from the line. One i championed but she had a great piebald coat.

My puppy has breathing problem what could this be?
he might have allergies, so you may need to change the food he eats until you find one that makes him feel better. You could feed dehydrated raw with a good simple, organic dog food. Take him to the vet and see if giving him a antihistimine would work for him. if you dont help him , he wont get help, he cant help himself. or give him to a rescue so they can help him.

Hi, I've had two dachshunds and both of them have lifted one of their hind legs when they walk. which makes them sort of trot. I know the leg isn't injured because they switched legs all the time. Does anyone know why they do this?
he is skipping because he has a genetic problem that moves from generation to generation. It isnt the patella but it is a tendon that didnt grow right when he was young. He will pass it on to his get and it will be a problem as he gets older. It is better to not breed this kind of genetic problem.
I'm not really sure, but one of mine does that too...kind of like he's skipping... The one that we had when I was little did the same thing. I'm not possitive, but I think that it's just that dachsunds, along with some other breeds, have another gait, just like some horse breeds have a 5th gait.

We have two male mini Dachshunds - one is a year and a half, the other is 7 months. Prior to getting our newer boy, our older one was "best friends" with his "cousin" a lab of the same age. They played together constantly, would never be away from each other - even slept in the same bed when they were together. To this day, if we say the lab's name in front of him, he runs to the window to look for him. However, the first night we introduced our new puppy, our older one took on a horribly protective demeanor, and has lost all of his friendly behaviors around the lab. He is still sweet and loving and himself in any other aspect of life - but when the three dogs are together, he isolates himself and gets mean and aggressive whenever the lab gets too close. The puppy and the lab have now become as playful and friendly. Is our first boy jealous? What can we do to bring them together again? Or at least keep him from being so mean?
I think i might have the anwer. my two dogs used to do this, too, when we got our first beagle puppy. maybe your older male dachsund is jealous like you said, or he feels the puppy cannot protect himself, wich means the older dachshund might be protecting your new puppy. try taking the new puppy in a room to play with someone else while you get the lab and your older dachshund to play together, and hopefully your older dachshund will soften up.

Are piebalds dominate color white? I have a puppy thats body color white w/ 4 quarter size spots of blue and blue/gray speckeled ears, the person I got her from said she was a double dapple.
A piebald dominate color is not always white. They must have four white paws and a white tip tail. Some look like beagles with the dominate color being red, white, brown, brindled, etc. A double dapple is not an exceptable description by AKC guidelines. If you will go to AKC.org and look under Dachshunds it will help you a lot. A double dapple takes special care and consideration when breeding. Please read up on that before even considering breeding your puppy as the results can be devastating and heartbreaking. I have both double dapples and piebalds and will send you pictures if you would like. Regardles to what is the proper description for the puppy you have is, please learn all you can about it. Colors can be a caution sign. I hope I helped. PawPawPatch

I have a miniature dachshund and he loves the outdoors. During the fall nights when we let him out at night we had the hardest time getting him to come back in. We put a dog house out for him, but I was really wanting him to be an indoor dog. Now that the winter months are approaching I am having the hardest time getting him to come in at night time. He will come in during the day to play but goes crazy wanting outside at night. I'm worried he is too small for this cold weather. Am I right thinking that and if so any suggestions on how to get him inside?
There could be several answers to your problem. If your doxy isn't getting enough exercise during the day, it may be that he knows that night-time is happy, fun, run around and play time. First off, you could try giving him two walks a day and see if that helps. He may not want to be outside if he's gotten his "wiggles" out If you ARE giving him enough exercise and you simply would like him to obey you when it's time to come inside, start treating him at the door, even in the day time. He needs to see that being inside doesn't imply just a large cage but a safe (and yummy) place to be. So you know, I heard a saying once about dogs being outside in the cold "if you wouldn't do it to your child, don't do it to your dog". Granted, this is a bit extreme but the principle is the same. Little dogs have a harder time staying warm, even if they have longer or thicker coats. Alright, I hope this answers your question(s) and good luck! (If not, sorry I'm so long-winded...)

my dachsund has dry skin i just got her today she is 6 years old she has fleas she came from a bad home and needs lots of loving i was wondering if there is anything besides the frontline i can give to her or do for her to make her feel better and get healthier faster. trust me she needs it. and im dying to makeher healthy and her coa shiny liek it should be
Your girl may have a flea allergy. One bite on the nose can cause skin problems all over. I insisted on a skin scrapping at the vets to rule out other possible causes. Dachshund also get sunburn and dry skin from being in the sun. Doxies do not normally have dry skin or require treatments for their skin. Once you find out why she has dry skin, you can treat it. Regular medicated dandruff shampoo can help with the itch...dry skin does itch. My vet gave me special shampoo for allergies that did the trick for me. Do not use Dawn dish detergent on dogs with dry skin. Good Luck.
I use olive oil on my Doxys food. He has beauitful coat and no dry skin. Hes a smooth black/brown

We took her to the vet and he said just keep and eye on her and wash her face , We try to keep her warm and comfortable any suggestions? , I also have a 7 year old minni male and never had this problem as a puppy
I have 3 mini's and they tend to shiver when they are nervous. I also had a runny eye and nose problem with one of my girls and it was due to dry air from my wood burning stove. Now I keep a humidifier and it has helped.

My doxy, can't bark. He sounds horse. IS there anyway to get him back to normal. OR could it be that he is getting old and he does bark alot.

My boyfriends mini doxie is about 10 years old and is 14 lbs i only feed him 1 cup of food a day but he just lays around even if i try to play with him, any sugestions on how to get his weight down?
try mixing a little bit of low sodium green beans in with the food
well what id do is feed him just not that much but if that doesnt work get him those yogo teats for dogs jrust me they work there really healthy and wave em in his face hill get up you walk around your house hell follow jrust me its happened to me before.
a daily walk will get his metabolism up, and once he loses a few pounds, he'll get more energy and become more active.

I have 2 x 4mnth old Daxies. The one pup has a patch of dry skin on her back about half way between her head and her tail. I dont know how to treat it? They do not have fleas or ticks or mites (its not mange) and wonder if its excema? How do I treat this? Is it neccessary to take her in to the vet or can I treat at home myself? I am also giving her a fatty acid supplement which also aids in clearing up skin problems (Efazol).
I have a doxie that has a similar patch on her tail. I have seen improvement recently by putting bacon fat on the dry spots. They have not cleared completely but their has been a great improvment.
Mabye It's Ringworm.Ringworm can cuse dry grey patches on the skin. Take it to a vet and get it treated.

I have been looking into purchasing a Doxie for about 1 year, I have heard that the mini doxie's have more spinal problems than the larger doxie's is this true?
My doxie had surgery last year for a disc and 10 month later we caught it early enough that so far he is only on meds and seems to be responding well to them. Not to scare yu but if the doxie needs back surgery its a pretty penny...$5000 is what came out of my pocket for it.
Back problems are common, but no more so for the miniature than then standard size. The other medical problem that can show up is seizures. Miniatures usually have one or the other of these issues. (Mine has escaped the back issues, but has OCCASIONAL seizures (about one or less a year)
Yes they usally do but if you make sure that it does not do any high jumping then it should be fine.
