Is it ok if a doberman tail has a rubber band around it? The breeder gave him to me like that. Is this a proper way of docking?

It is not the proper way to dock it may look ok but in the end it will have cozeed the dog way more pain that he/she should have had.

Hi! My name is Nikki and i have had my Doberman since he was 5 months old. Bruno is now a year old and i desperatly need some help with some problems i am having! Bruno thinks he is the Alpha and we have tried many different suggestions from tv to the vet to help us get control, but nothing works. He is a sweet boy but he has a serious mouthing problem and at times will not listen. I am hoping that someone with Dobie experiance can help me with some suggestions that will work. My husband is getting fed up and i do not want to have to get rid of him because i love him and i know we can train him with the right information. The main problem is when we bought him from his origional owner, all they did was keep him in a crate because he was a gift for the daughter and didnt take care of him, so they got rid of him! He has come a long way since then except for the Alpha and mouthing problem. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Nikki

I adopted a 9 mnth old dobie from someone who only left her in a crate with little attention. Her energy level was out of the world. I devoted time to her every day for at least a walk if not more serious training. Now at 5 she is an angel and truley a source of great pride for me. None of this would have been possible if i had not been willing to asume the dominate roll and demand nothing but her total obediance to me. Take charge! your dog will love you more for it i promise!

You can try squeezing a slice of lemon in his mouth when he 'mouths' you. Do not tollerate any mouthing.
Dogs are pack animals and it sounds like he is looking for his pack leader. You have to be that leader and show him what you expect. Make sure you praise him when he does well.
Try to give him 10 - 20 minute training sessions a day. Keep your own disposition calm, don't get overly excited. Try to use a deeper voice. Make concise comands like sit, come, stay, no.

He has a great way with animals (and people).
Keep in mind, it is usually not the dog's fault. It is the people around him/her.
Don't give up and good luck!

Hi my name is Vicky. I have 2 dobs. A boy and a girl. They are excellent dogs but as you have said, it means alot to give them attention and let them know they are loved and wanted. Well every one has there own way of training, but I have found this training collar called PETSAFE at Pet Smart. It is very safe and helpful when they get the "selective hearing problem". It has a button to beep them when you are wanted them to stop and listen and then a button for a little vibration if they don't respond to you or the beep. It will NOT hurt them. We travel around the world and our dogs are with us. It helps train them quickly and it keeps them from getting to far out of control. I hope this helps. We dont even have to use the device now but it was a great investment. Our vet even advised us of using this product. GOOD LUCK!!

Do doberman pups need their front dew claws removed?

No dogs 'need' there dewclaws removed. Unless you plan to show your dog in the AKC. All you would be doing is puting your dog through unecessary pain.

I was wondering what is the differience between the american, european, and american european cross in dobie's.Some
people say the european are bigger and stronger with a better temperment.I have raised dogs like, collie, shepherd, siberian husky,husky/lab mix, king size malamute, and a boxer. My dogs have all passed away now but i like dobie's so what is good male or female
because both dogs are big which is great but some people say a male is always better for size and strength.

I am looking into getting a doberman that is almost 2 years old. His ears have been cropped, but do not stand. Is there any way to get them to stand without using surgery? Is it too late to start the taping process over again?

Look up (house of hoytt doberman) and purchase his "quick brace", they are very very good, they work on dogs up to 3 yrs old. you can call and speak to Barri Hoytt yourself he is very helpful person, so helpful that I just bought one of his dogs. Excellent helpful breeder and really cares about the breed and has lots of stories about ear problems that he and his staff were able to fix without surgery.

Are female or males doberman better suited for a female owner

Like people, dogs especially dobermans have different temperaments.
The preference for a male or female is a personal choice. Females have their own issues to deal with just like women do. It is really a match of character rather then sex for a female owner. Remember you do have to maintain discipline or they will take over.

My dobbermans recently had puppies about 6 weeks ago, and I am just now noticeing that our only red puppy has blue eyes. Is that normal? Will her eyes change color as she gets older?

Yes they will change colors. All puppies are born with blue eyes and then they change. The only ones that don't change are whites, their eyes do stay blue.

why is the tail of a doberman pup ususally cut?......some say the tail grows too long and curls over its back, causing some disease which kills it........ True?

not true, dobermans have long normal tails,

I have a male doberman 5 months of age. I am taping his cropped ears for 3-4 days at a time and then take them out for a couple days. His ears do not stand straight for more than one day. I am wondering h ow long it usually takes to get them to stand erect for good. Also, I am wondering what most people use to tape their ears to. I am using rolled paper napkins with paper tape to wrap them. If anybody has any good info on what they are using I would appreciate it.

they will get better i have one and my little sister always plays with them and now he is 2 years old and no matter what they will normally stand up

Hi--we have a 5 month old doberman and have been taping his ears for the last two months. His ears are almost completey erect. We tape the ears for 7 days at a time and then retape them. They do not stay untaped for more than the time it takes to clean the ears and give him a bath. We were told by the breeder that the ears should never be untaped for more than 20minutes at a time. Dependingon the cut it usually takes from 4-6 months for the ears to stand erect.

The research I found for cropped ears is a 6-7 month healing time. Also the most common response I got for what to use for taping was to use tampons. They are stiff yet soft.

I thought my doberman had an eye infection (lots of green/yellow matter in one eye. Vet gave him antibiotic cream for eye. Now matter is in both eyes and it is just grayish in color, but more than I have ever seen in my other dogs. Is this a doberman problem or should I delve deeper?

My doberman puppy had the same problem. It was fixed by deworming her believe it or not. I had heard that eye matter was a sign of worms before, so I was deligent about having her wormed. it took a long time to get rid of it, as I had to go through all the different types of worming medications. It cleared up the best with Panacur. It's a little expensive, but try it. You'll notice a difference right away. Make sure do to the proper abount for your dogs weight and for the full 5 days or whatever it says.

I have an 8 month old dobie and had the same problem - we gave her benedryl 25mg/one pill 3 times a week and it cleared it up, the vet said it was allergies. I hope this works for you

What are the positives, and negatives,of owninig a fawn ,blue, and white colored doberman pinschers?

I am the proud parent of two fawns and one black and tan. Fawn is an official color. I do not encourage white and it is not an official color. Our fawns have never had any skin problems whereas my black has. One of the best thing about the the fawns is being able to walk them through the park without getting that vicious dog look from people, but many compliments from breed enthusiasts.

I have heard that the lighter colors suffer more skin problems/sensitivity.
The Doberman Pinscher Club of America is trying to stop the expansion of the gene pool of albanistiic "white" Dobermans, citing health issues, light & sun sensitivity as detrimental to the breed.

We have a 13 month old European Dobermann. He is very large (120 lbs.) and the love of my life. He does have a bad habit in the evening hours of getting very domineering, verging on aggressive with me (female) but is fine with my husband. Any suggestions other than stay away from him when he is so focused on me?

It's possible that he sees you as a subordinate. Read up on the dogs' hierarchical nature to find ways to make sure he knows that you're in charge.

i have a 7 yr old female dobe and a 6 year old male dobe. I know someone who has an 8 month old dobe who cant keep it due to living arrangements, it has been around children, i have no children. do you think it is ok for me to bring the 8 month old dobe home?

are they good with other pets?

yes they do,if you socialize them very well.besides my dobi,i have 7 parrots here, two bunny's,one guinea pig and a german shephard and they all get long very well, sure with supervsion, same with kids,Apollo our dobi loves kids and the attention he gets from them

What should be the ideal weight of a 3-4 months old doberman ?

with 16 weeks our Dobi was 43lbs and he isn't on the huge side...

I am going crazy. My husband brought home an 8 month old Male doberman, and since he's in the military my husband's gone through the work week and I'm left to take care of him. We live in an apartment, and he barks and growls at EVERY tiny noise out there. Then at night when we put him in his crate he whines for about a half an hour before he wears himself out. I've tried everythin to get him to stop, especially the Caeser Milan method, and nothing seems to stick with him! He seems to be very definant towards us at time and then very submissive at others. Also, every bit of excitment make him pee, will this stop with time or is there something I can do?

As a Dobermann Pinscher owner for many years I advise you to find this young and energetic canine a new, proper home if you are not able to exercise him more. This breed is not for everyone, especially those who do not live physically active lives {jogging, brisk-paced walking, hiking, etc...}. He whines in his crate because he is bored and has too much energy, and/or needs to be near or with you. Unless you plan to work with and interact with him a lot more, you can forget about things getting any better.

I have a male blue doberman that drooles a lot. Is that normal? He is 2 years old...

i have a 10 month old female dob and she is quite small,50 pounds but very skinny, when do they stop growing and how much bigger do u think she will get?

They usually continue to grow till 18 to 24 months. Although some continue to slowly grow throughout their lives. During her second year she will grow most of her muscle mass. The first year is pretty much just their bones growing. For our female since she just turned 1 we give her a mix of one can of wet dog food mixed with dry dog food once a day for one week once a month.

I have an 8 year old male dob who lives in the city. He has never been socialized with children and now seems to be afraid of them. He barks and seems very anxious around them when they are in the same space. I have never allowed him to be free with children simply because I am unsure as to what he will do. Any ideas for this breed?

yes I think the dog whisperer is ok but you are dealing with peoples children and a big dog so just for your safety theirs and your dog I would attach a shock collar to be sure you can call him off should anything go wrong until he adjusts to the children. I have used a collar that has a remote with a high pitched ring and an optional shocker if necessary. My female dobie was not socialized around children and thought they were a threat and was trying to be protective. I had to use this method which proved very successful a few times and since she has adjusted to the kids and has now diverted her attention to real threats and the good thing is I don't have to use the collar anymore. Just another "happy" thought.

Yes DONT BE AFRAID!!!!! It is the same with all breeds. I have a chihuahua and doberman. My chihuahua used to have huge issues with children. Even nipped at a few and I was terrified to let him around kids!!
I watched the dog whisperer and it hit me like a ton of bricks. It was me that was becoming anxious around children and the more unsure I was the worse the chihuahua reacted.
Its hard (especially with a full grown doberman) but you just have to relax!! Think happy thoughts. Start off with children you know and tell them "dont look, touch, or talk to the dog please" let them walk around normally and he will be sure to calm down!! Eventually he will approach them, trust me. but it takes time.
Its worth it though!! Im pleased to say just last week I was at a kids birthday party and Rex the chihuahua was the happiest Ive ever seen him. He was running around with the kids and just about every kid held him (he didn't even want to be put down)
It almost made me cry when I realized he was in the castle with the children by his own choice.
Trust me CALM DOWN, think happy thoughts and he wont have any issues with kids!!
WATCH DOG WHISPERER on National Geographic!!! he really does understand dog psychology

I have a two year old male doberman that sheds constantly. I brush him every two days with a regular soft brush and I use a deshedding tool from my vet once a week. We have him on Flaxseed pills (vet recomended). The other thing we struggle with is keeping weight on him (he is not wormy) We feed him an all natural food about 4.5 cups daily and he has plenty of water

Did you ever have him tested for thyroid problems this can cause all kinds of problems such as hair loss eye matter problems, weight loss check it out.

Try adding plain greek style yogurt to his food. It is high in protein and has lots of good stuff in it!! and its sure to make your dob put on weight lol haha!!
We have our male on about 1 1/2 cups a day (mixed in with purina dog chow) and everyone who sees him has to mention how beautiful and shinny his coat is, and we don't have an issue with shedding.
Just go to your local market and read the back of the container!!

im going to acquire an adult doberman. 2years ld i think. i had dogs here. they are native dogs. mongrels. somebody told me that my alpha male here might be challenged by my new dobe? is it true? what should i do?

Anytime you add a new dog to a "pack" here will be squabbles over a new order. When A new dog is added they don't just file into the bottom of the order, the whole order has to be reestablished between every dog. So a bit of bickering between any of you dogs, even ones that had gotten along before, is normal

i have a male 9month old dob and just bought a 7week old male dob. my 9month old is fixed and were thinking of not fixing our 7week old because we want to stud him. being so young will they get along considering they are both males and will my 7week old be more aggressive if we dont fix him??

i have a almost 2 yr old male doberman that is big 120 lbs he is starting to bounce up in down slightly on his rear legs when he gets off the ground and that sometimes takes some work .waiting to get some money to take to the vet does this sound similar to a hip problem

I really want to get a Doberman but all I hear about them, is that they do not get along with other dogs - is this true? And if I do get one should I get a puppy so I can train at an early age - rather than a rescue?

Basically it depends on how well you socialize any dog.....some dogs don't like other dogs, as we don't always like other people.
I highly reccommend socializing any dog, no matter what the breed/mix, plus at least basic obedience training. You're going to have a much better dog and bond faster and better. I have had four rescues, 3 of them dobes-one a dal. Rescues especially should be socialized and take an basic obedience class, the socialization might well take longer, but it's very well worth it.
My current male dobe really likes other dogs, my first rescue needed to meet the other dog, then things were fine.
Depending on your work schedule, getting a young adult, or older (if you're an experienced dog owner) might be much better for both you and the dog.....puppies should be crated only one hour more then they are months old i e 4 month old pup should be crated no longer then 5 hours...very hard to do if you work full time
Also, when adding a new dog to the household, you idealy should have both dogs meet on neutral territory, in a quet place..

my male doby loves other dogs. he doesnt know his size since he is over 100lbs at 9months but as for other dogs, he is awesome. i had boxers before the dob and i have never been so impressed in his behavior towards other dogs. when another dog comes along, he wants to play. if the other dog shows aggression with me, hes not friendly but over all, hes awesome. socialize him young though.

surely..u have 2 socialize dem very very early..else they will dominate da other 1..just like mine..it dominates my dalmatian& run after my cats..sometimes my bro& i would allow her 2 jump on our parents bed..it was not so friendly wid my dad n but loves mom..so each time it saw dad on da bed or shoutin at mom..it would bark fiercely..so it need early socialization...

Dobermans can get along quite well with other dogs if you socialize them with other dogs from an early age. They are very protective of there owners so you have to show them from the start that other dogs can be around and that it is ok. Some rescue dogs do well with other dogs as they may have been socialized with them as pups. But you need to know the background of the dog. If you don't and want a dog that is going to get along with other dogs then my suggestion would be get a puppy. But something you have to be aware of is that Males generally do not get along with other males. It is in the breed. And you really have to work at it if you have other males. If your just wanting a pet I would get a female as you will have less problem with other dogs. Hope that helps.

I have a 4 month old female dobe.. my mother brought her home when she was 45 days old..
Right from day one she has been hyper active.. She used to play bite a lot but then she had little teeth and it never hurt..
She stopped biting for a week or so when her milk teeth stopped growing.. but its becoming hell now..
Am quite a huge guy at 6 foot 5 but that just doesnt seem to deter her..
I have healed/semi-healed/fresh wounds all over my hands.. It sounds silly getting bitten by a little puppy but her teeth are razor sharp and she's quick as lightning.. She sinks her teeth, withdraws and scurries away..
I have tried every goddamned thing to stop her biting. One dobe owner told me, i should lift her up by the scruff and bite her ear lightly, which is what the mother does. i did that and she was okay for a couple of a day but that was it.. Now nothing deters are. yelling, hitting her with slippers, biting her ears, picking her up by the scruff NOTHING.
I excercise her a lot.. walks 3 times a day and i run full speed with her.. I just dunno why she cant stop biting.. I have had a dalmatian and a lab before and i ve never seen something like this..
I have cared so much for her, spent so much time trying to correct this behaviour, but with no results.. am really starting to lose faith in dogs, its a big thing cause i literally grew up with them but this one puppy is giving me hell..

One of the worst things you can do with a doberman is to hit them. Dobermans are one breed that never forgets whether it be good or bad. I use the tapping on the nose to correct my dobermans. I have only had one that did the play bite and it was never real serious. But it hurt none the less and if let go I am sure it could have been serious. But each time he made the move to nip at my fingers I would tap on the nose and tell him no at the same time in a very stern voice. You have to use a different tone of voice in correcting your dog than you would normally do just talking to them. My dogs know when I use a certain tone that I mean business. It could also be something in the ancestory of the dog. Look at the background dogs and see if they had biters. That could be a genetic fault and you may not be able to correct it. But at 4 months old you should be able to straighten her out. Yelling will do no good. She will know your mad but really not know why.

My dog is 3 yrs old and whines constantly. I have just about had it but I care for the dog too much. Is there anything I can do?

when he crys, take him for a long run or walk. something that i did was went to the store and bought a laser light and he chases it around the yard for about ten minutes. hes pooped then and will konk right out!! they are the biggest babys and needs constand human attention. when hes crying, he only want love. if only those critics knew that when they cry, they only want to be loved!

We have a four year old Doberman with a wonderful tempermant. Such a loving, loyal boy. The one problem I always had with him was his whining. He would follow me around the house or sit wherever I was sitting and stare at me and whine. It drove me nuts! I think it came from boredom and wanting to play or be walked all the time. After some good, tiring exercise it would stop for a while. I can tell you though, that in the last year it has lessened tremendously. He seems to be more comfortable with himself and less anxious.

Do not pay attention to it when it whines. Keep with it.

My dog is just over a year old and we try to do a lot with him. He's socialized, goes to dog parks and daycare but he whines a lot and we also have problems with him being overly vocal when other dogs are around or walk by as well as him barking at everything outside the house and can't have the windows up at night. Is this their normal behavior?

When he starts to bark get a small spray bottle and give him a few squirts of water in the face along with a stern "no". Most dogs don't like having water in their faces. With a lot of repetition it will improve. I did it with my dog when she was a puppy whining a lot and it worked fast and was pain free for me and my dog.

This is completely normal and can be corrected. As you know, your dog is very protective which is why he`s doing all the protective barking. I recently went through the same thing with my Great Dane, he would protectively bark at anything and whine when he was outside and wanted in. The way I corrected it was to become super dominate when he would start barking in order to let him know it wasn`t ok. For example, when he starts to bark, approach him in a calm assertive manner and correct him. I like to use shape my hand like a dog`s mouth and say “cschh.” (Ceser Milan) This should cause him to focus his attention on you. When he looks like he`s going to start barking again, repeat. Most of the time, just your hand in his face is enough to get him to focus…. If not give him a slight touch on the neck. You can also tell him no. This takes a lot of repetition. You have to do it every single time he starts to bark. After a few days, should see results. To correct the whining, you can basically use the same method. Except, this time you want to communicate to him that wherever he is at, that is “his place.” Essentially, your telling him to be comfortable where hes at and that whining is not acceptable. So, when he whines, immediately go to where he is and correct him, make him sit, stay, lay and then leave when he is calm. When he starts to whine again, repeat.....over and over and over. Eventually, the whining will stop. As frustrating as all this is, remain calm and assertive. He should pick it up quickly since Dobermans are usually very smart breeds. Hope this helps.
