Dogue de Bordeaux Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

I have a 2 year old ddb.I noticed little bumps on skin recently. No fleas, parasites,or allergys.Fed only a natural holistic diet. They get crusty then go away. The vet said they are ingrown hair follicles.Gave me an antibiotic spray to put on.Has anyone ever ran into this with their ddb?I bath less frequently in winter due to the dry air.I don't want to mke him itchy.I just hope they go away and don't get worse cause I never heard of this.Thank you so much.

I have had two bread of dogs in my life. A doberman and a Great Dane. Kona the doberman was very very smart and very respectful. Bama the Great Dane was not quite the smartest but very loving. The Dogue from what I have read seems to be somwhere between the two. I have read thay are smart. Can you please onfirm this? My BIG concern is drooling. When Bama ate and drank I stood for as long as it took for him to eat/drink with towel in hand. Otherwise I would have a VERY wet floor. Can you please advise if a Dogue is drools as bad as I am claining the dane did? Thank you very much for your help!
sorry I meant underbite
Yes, ddb's are very smart. A bit stubborn but eager to please.Once they learn something they will never forget it.I rarely raise my voice to mine.A simple look or snap of fingers is all it takes for mine to sit. Training w/ hand signals not only gets them your full attention to learn but keeps training fun.It also makes you and them calm and patient thus gaining 110% trust and loyalty. Yes they are sloopy drnkiers due to large mouth and over bite. Not meesy eater mine eats slow and calm. I have no doubt since you are familiar w/ giant breeds you would fall in love w/ a ddb. Hope this helped you.Take care.

Please help. We just adopted a DDB and she doesn't want to eat. We had her a week and wasn't eating her Costco Lamb and rice from the previous owener. We tried some samples from our pet store and now shes on purina pro plan and still not eating much. She's 4 1/2 and 87 pounds. I don't like how I can see her ribs but what do I do.
She may have separation anxiety if she was close to previous owner. She may also have health problems such as tapeworm or round worms. Take her to vet for checkup along w/ stool sample to void out parasites.

Hi I have a male ddb he will be 7 months old tomorrow. The last 4 to 5 days hes just slept and laid in the lounge. He usually wants to play with my husband and have a funny half hour but he doesnt seem to want to do this any more. I brought my new rug into the lounge 4 to 5 days ago and hes adopted this. He lays on it all the time. I wonder if the rug is so comfy for him and thats why hes just lathargic now as it has been since we got the rug. Could anyone advise me on this as hes not off his food. Hes just gone totally lazy. Thanks in advance
He may have a touch of something. I would take him to vet just to make sure. They are a laid back breed, but mine calmed down alot when my wife became pregnant.

I'm thinking of adopting a 10 month old male DDB. I already have a 11 year old male Bulldog and 3 year old Male Welsh Terrier. Is it too late to socialize him at 10 months?
With already having two adult males in the family and adding a third you could have your hands full. You might consider adopting a female DDB.

Im recieving my DDB in a few days she comes with everything but my quiston is shes not heavily wrinkled . Is it because shes a female?
Not all DDB's have a lot of wrinkles, i've seen some with barely none...male and female. If anything, it will make for healthier skin cause if you don't keep the wrinkles clean, it can create infection.

My DDB is 8 weeks old as of yesterday, at his vet checkup he weighed 11.5 lbs he gained 2 lbs from last week. The vet told me he is extremely under weight. He is on Canidae food eating a little over 2 cups a day, and he wont eat anymore. Is my vet correct or is he just gonna try and con me into getting thier vet food?
He is not underweight... Mine was 12 pounds at 8 weeks and was very healthy... If he is not riby he's healthy...

My ddb is 8 months now but he has a very horriable smell on his coat and breath. He eats Arden Ganage large puppy food dry. What would be better for him so he doesn't smell.
feed him eagle pack puppy for large and giant breeds. you will be happy with how he feels, looks, and smells. gravy train??!!! please do not feed your douge this. very high calorie content, little nutrition=very short life!!! get him checked for worms. parasites can cause bad breath.
i give both my ddb and great dane gravy train and they dont have that bad of a breath as dogs normally do but our old dog(boxer)had so bad of breath it smelled as if someone would have cooked rotten fish and sweaty socks in fish oil but we fed him the same dog food so mabey it's just part of who your dog is.we tryed even giving him loads of crushed peppermints and doggie mints but that never worked, it was just how my dog was.

what is the average weight for a 10 month old male ddb?
I would say 90 to 110 pounds would be average... Give or take some... Males may be a little more and females may be a little less

I have a 9 month old make ddb. he weighs 85lbs. Is that underweight? what would the average weight for a 9 month old male be?
I have an 8 month old female & she weighs 95 pounds. Had her to the vet yesterday & she said that was a good weight for her age.
No, not all ddb's are over 100 pds. I have a year old that weighs 95. Put weight on slow.An over weight ddb will develop hip problems. Trust me I love mine like a son, and muscle weighs more than fat. He will feel better, look better, have more energy and do what he was bred to do alot better a little under weight than over weight. They may take up to 2 years to fully mature physically. If you love your ddb and what them to live past 8 years feed them quality food, moderate exercise and love. The weight will come.. as muscle and pure power.

Do ddbs bark a lot? Are they good with kids and do they train easily?
i agree with below. they are guardian bred for protection of their family and friends. they rarely bark and when they do the threat leaves unless you invite. herding breeds bark alot not guardian, some are trained not to bark at all to protect. also very loving and gentle with children.
They don't bark alot, they know when a threath is real or not. They are wonderfull with children. They don't train easely, because they are strong willed and stubborn. Not a beginner-dog. But they are also wonderfull companions, and given the right home, you will have the most wonderfull breed in the world. I have 4 of the.

How do I get my ddb to gain weight?
First I would need to know, how old is your ddb? Also, if you think the weight issue is a serious problem, I would take the dog to the vet. That being said, just make sure your ddb has access to high quality food (try adding two egg whites a week to the food) and lots of fresh water. Beware of a giant ddb though- bad hips, shorter life.

I have a 13 month old male that I recently just got. He's great other than his aggression towards other dogs. What's the best way to socialize him safely?
try making him sit with back to other dog to get his scent then vice versa. Never face to face espcially another male. remember not every dog will want to be your friend. remember to be relaxed too. a ddb will feed off your energy.
- get him neutered (male ddb do not care for other male dogs) - muzzle him while socializing him with other dogs. Let him off leash with them once he is a little acquainted, but leave the muzzle on and always supervise.

I have an eight month old female whom has a reaccurring rash is there any thing they are commanly alergic to?
My DDB had dermidex mange.... maybe that's what yours has, take him to a vet and they can do a skin scrap...
They are prone to Dermidex mange, which can look like a rash. They are also known to have allergies (food, vaccines etc.).

can a puppy be raised around cats or is this just a ridiculous idea?
My bordeaux is great with my 2 cats. She loves to cuddle with them.
Mine had patches of fur to start go missing when he was 6 months.... Found out he was allergic to the food. (I was using Iams puppy chow Large breed) Pure breeds tend to have issues with Chicken.
I am a Canadian Dogue de Bordeaux Breede and have raised all my dogues with cats & kittens. They get along just fine. They lick the cats a bit too much, I don't thing the cats are so fond of that. lol Put one in a crate and let the other investigate and sniff safely. Let them get acquainted. Then switch and crate the other. They will check each other out. When introducing them outside of a crate baby gate off a room so if the cat wants to get away it can just jump over the baby gate. In time, no baby gate will be needed they will lay and sleep together. Dogue de Bordeaux are very nurturing and like to take care of and protect little animals. That comes from there guarding instinct and why they use to use them to guard herds, because they would protect the heard and not hurt them.
it can but, if they start to fight i know 2 things 1. you can let them play with each other so they get 2 know about the other animal (keep an eye on them just incase) 2. if #1 doesn't work put the cat in a seperate room where the dog won't get it.
