German Shorthaired Pointer Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

I have a 9 year old German Shorthair Pointer. She has lost several pounds in the last few weeks. I have taken her to the vet for a blood test, urine and fecal exam. Everything checks out ok. I was wondering if anyone knows what this might be.
Post Response
my GSP is 7. But he takes a while to get up and his knees click.Do you know why he is ageing so quickly? What can I qive him for his legs/knees.

I have a 15-week-old GSP male. He weights 18 pounds at this moment. After reading many posts online it seems to me that he's fairly small for his age. We feed him 3 times a day a cup of Innova for puppies. Is his weight correct or not? Thanks!
Another word of advice from my last response. It seems that chewing brings some sort of great joy and accomplishment to the GSP. Chewing also translates into the use of energy and muscle creation. It will be a frustrating thing to correct, but if you don't, you can plan on replacing things that you don't want chewed up. My son has a 18 month old male that can destroy a lawn tractor tire chew toy in DAYS. This dog has grown into a brute with regard to muscle tone, and if allowed to do so, he is so active that my son cannot keep weight on him.
We have raised several GSP from puppy to adult. If your dog is properly wormed, and has a good diet, there is not much need for worry. BEWARE--every young male GSP I have ever seen was so active that if allowed to run freely, there was absolutely no way that weight could be kept on. The active nature of these dogs converts everything they eat into either energy or muscle when they are young, but tends more toward muscle as they mature. Ours have always matured into nothing short of brute strength. As they age, they tend to settle down and mellow out, but will surprise you with moments of almost puppy like vigor. You have a great friend, cherish him.

I have a 4 1/2 month GSP female puppy, i take her out for two 20 min walks on the lead ( sometimes 3 ) and a good hour long free run every day. I know they are a very active breed but as she is still so young Is this too much for her?
Post Response
how much (quantity) should i feed my GSP twice a day?
Post Response
how much should a 7 month pointer weigh? and when do they stop growing?
Post Response
Approx how much should my 6 month old female GSP weigh? She is quite tall, already 24-25" to the wither. Thanks
My 6 month old male wieghs in at 45lbs.
Post Response
Please tell me how many cups of food a day should a seven year old 50 pound female GSP should be given?
It depends on which food you are feeding. There should be a feeding guide on the bag/tin.
Post Response
I have a 5 month old GSP cross Staffy. I have been walking her twice a day for about 30 to 45 mins each time...... is that too much?
Not too much. You can never walk a GSP (or cross) too much. They are very active.
Post Response
We just had a litter of gsp puppies and they are mostly white. Will they get freckles later or will they stay white?
The spots usually show up at about 6 weeks.
Post Response
As a child I grew up with a female pointer. I am interested in getting one for my family but want to know the difference in temperament for males to females.
Dogs do tend to b more hyper than females but sometimes getting them castrated can calm them down a little. Either way they are both pretty much full on until about 2 year old.
Post Response
How long does a female GSP remain in heat?
21 days
Post Response
My 4yr old GSP just had 9 puppies 4 days ago. She is whinning, panting, digging and tore up the box that the puppies are in. What do you think could be going on with her?
has she got mastitis? Check her nipples, if the area surrounding them is hot and hard she might have mastitis. As in humans this is very painful and needs antibiotics. Are you sure she has expelled all her puppies? If there is a dead one inside her she may be thinking that she still has another one to birth. Perhaps might be a good idea for the vet to take a look at her anyway.
Post Response
How much food should I be feeding my 3 month old german shortaired pointer?
It depends on what food you are feeding. There should be a feeding guide on the tin/bag. At 3 months I would still be feeding 4 times a day, reducing it to 3 times a day by 4 months and then twice a day by 6 months
Post Response
As german shorthairs get older, do they get scared of loud sounds?
Not usually no. Young pointers tend to be skittish and nervous but as they get older they get better. If she is very old perhaps she's going deaf so the only sounds she hears are very loud noises and when she hears them it startles here.
Post Response
I just bought 2 new gsp's but the breeder did not cut the tail how long do I have till its to late to cut the tailes?
idealy tail should be cut at 3 to 5 days, dew claws should be removed at that time as well , after 40 days its too late.
Post Response

my GSP weighed in at 12 lbs
about 7 pounds
Post Response

I don't have a GSP yet and am considering getting one. I live an active lifestyle on weekends (hunting hiking etc). During the week however I work 8 hrs a day and would have to leave the dog at home. I would only be able to let it run in local fields and walk it for an hour or so Mon-Fri. Would this be O.K. for the average GSP?
If you get a young pup and crate train it from day 1 it will be safe and secure in a crate whilst you are not at home. However a young pup can not hold its urine for that length of time so expect a messy crate for a while.
I have a 3 year old GSP and he's with me most of the time or at day care. He's one that has separation anxiety but when with other dogs he's just fine. We live in the city so doggie parks are a great way to get the beans worked out of him and we do both obedience and agility on the weekends. He's an inside dog when we're home and he's been great indoors and very calm for the breed.
I have a GSP and am out of the house for 12 hours. Jasper is left outside and has a patio and terrace to be on and so is fine. I take him out every morning for almost an hour to a place he can run about, and then in the evenings too. The days I don't travel for work we go for long walks for 2 to 3 hours near the beach. He doesn't have a set routine so if some nights I am tired we don't go out. He is used to this and he isn't a problem. I think yours will be fine too. They are lovely dogs. Enjoy!
My 2 GSPs do fine at home for 8 hrs...but no longer. And they need more than a walk when I get home. We generally go to a field or dog park and they run flat out for about an hour. If they miss their exercise for one day, they will certainly let you know they are not happy.
I have 3 GSP, and they do perfectly fine if left alone while I am at work. Some of your success may depend on the individual personality of the specific dog, but GSP can be very relaxed dogs in the home and can behave very well. Exercise in the evening and taking them hunting on weekends is acceptable.
forget it - a GSP will go mad left for 8 hours a day, day after day! It will get very noisy and/or bark/destroy the house. Angela Boyd (ran GSP rescue for 18 yrs in UK)
One of my GSP's has separation anxiety. You might want to hire a dog walker or take it to doggie day care.
If u walk the dog everyday and excercise him a lot on weekends he should be fine. we live in an apt (until we find a house) and our puppy does ok. If u leave him in the crate a lot or don't take him out u will not get minute of peace so make sure u have the time.

Will a GSP hunt rabbit...
Yes and anything else! Quail, ducks, deer, everything.
Post Response
How much exercise should a 9 week old puppy GSP get? Can they go for short walks, or should they stick to running in the yard?
do NOT let them off leash in an unsecure area. They will be gone in no time flat, esp puppies
Let your puppy run and play as much as it wants. You can walk about as far as you wish. I would recommend that you don't take him on jogs or bicycle rides where he has to run at a set constant speed until he is around a year old to let his bones and joints develop. Prior to that it is better to let him run off-leash and speed up, slow down, stop, etc. at his own pace if you have a location that you can safely allow this.
when they get tired, they'll stop running
Post Response
How much do they shed? low, medium or high?
My GSP has low to medium shedding but twice a year she blows her coat and we are knee deep in hair for 2 weeks.
My girl is 1 1/2 yrs and sheds..... a lot! She's white with brown spots. We have walnut floor and brown sofa. I sweep the floor and roll the sofa daily. I'm a clean freak. Even though my husband forgot to tell me about the shedding, I love her and don't mind it now. GSH are the best!
GSP will shed fairly constantly, but they have short hair. The problem is they have both brown/white or black/white hair so it can show up on just about any clothing. Using a grooming tool such as the ZoomGroom can significantly decrease hair that ends up on clothing, upholstery, etc.
I have a 6 month old female and i try not to wear black or white. because she is very small for her age and thinks shes a lap dog. maybe its just my dog but i would say medium. She sheds alot more when you give her a bath.. its really not that bad tho. you know cuz all dogs shed. gsp's just shed more regularly. but its worth it!!

Is it okay to give a homemade supplement made with dry dog food, cream cheese, peanut butter, corn oil, cottage cheese and browned hamburger meat to an elderly GSP that needs to gain a small amount of weight? I just wanted to check the ingredients list-before feeding it to him.
Skip the peanut butter, and do peanut oil. About a TBS a day. It doesn't have the sugar that the butter does, and has more fat per serving. It has helped with my 11 month old pup. If you are wanting to mix and match foods just be sure you don't mix raw with cooked. ie. raw eggs with say the cooked burger. The kibble digest much slower than raw. Then you can wind up with a bacteria problem like salmonella. Green beans and cut up potato make great filler also.

I do not have a shorthaired pointer yet, but am planning to get one. I would like to know how much you feed them?
It would depend on the age of you dog or puppy. Some GSP's keep weight easily and some need a little extra. We prefer to gauge what time of the year it is, are we working the dogs hard in training/hunting season, then we feed a performance food to our adults, in the not so active months we switch to a maintenance. A good quality food will require less to feed. We free feed our puppies unless they would become really obese but have never had that problem. BE SURE, to only feed your gsp puppy LARGE breed puppy food. Small breed may promote too fast of growth therefore affecting their bone structure. Our adults get 2 cups a day, 3 cups when heavy training. Good luck with your new pup!
Pointers put on weight very easily. i feed mine only 2 handfuls of kibble a day, anymore and she gets overweight
For a 3-5 month old puppy, 10 lbs a /every two weeks. They eat fast. Keep up with the growth!
Post Response
When do puppies start to show signs of their tick markings?
Usually around 4-6 weeks. Depending on color. Maybe a brown ticked pointer would show marking a week earlier than the blacks.
You can see evidence of where their ticking will be almost as soon as they are dry after birth. The skin underneath the white hair will be colored more darkly in the areas that will have ticking. Over the first couple of weeks after birth it will continue to be more obvious.
