I am in the process of purchasing a female Great Dane puppy. I was wondering how many pounds of food an adult Great Dane would typically eat per week. Also, I understand that it is recommened that Great Dane puppies eat a lower protien food as compared to regular puppy food. Can anyone recommend a good puppy food?

We just bought a 3 month old Great Dane female. She is having a discharge of mucus from her vagina. It is a yellowish green. What does this mean?

My male dane had the same thing. He had a staph infection and is currently on antibiotic. Staph is a normally occuring bacteria found on the skin. Not serious.

I am thinking of getting a great dane soon. I have done lots of reading up on them, but one thing I'm unsure of. I will keep it inside with me most of the time, but during the nights and on occasion when I'm gone it would be outside in my large back yard. Do great danes do well outside, particularly in the winter? She would have a shed with bedding to stay in.
Also, how much can I budget that I will be spending on dog food weekly/monthly?

Hi. Great danes are not outside dogs at all. Everything I have read states to keep them inside. My danes only want to be outside if I am. They hate cold weather and really hot weather.

Danes do not like to cold. I live in Upstate NY and my Dane has elected to hold his pee on occasions rather than go outside and urinate. In winter I have to walk him outside and ensure he goes. Danes do well outside if they are only out for short stints. They prefer indoors and are generally non-destructive if they are given attention. You will spend about $20-$40 a bag for food every 2-3 weeks. The real money is in the Vet bills. Giant breed dogs have higher costs. The dog will need vaccines, spay/neutering and they should have their stomach tacked to prevent gastric volvulvus (stomach flipping), grooming costs (u can do) and other stuff like toys, crate, etc. you may spend more on extras than you do on the dog. However, they are worth it. Thor is the best dog I have ever owned and everyone he meets is crazy about him.

This is not a question but a suggestion. I have learned with our female great dane who often had diarea that it was the content of the food. The chicken in the dog food meals give her loose stools and any corn content will make her lose her hair. we use Lamb and Rice and nothing else. This has seemed to work for us.

I have an 9 month old femaie Great Dane puppy. She weights 109 lbs and is lean and beutifully muscular. I was wondering if this is a normal weight or is my dog particully large for her age. She is supposedly the great neice of the "Largest Dog in the World", Gibson the harlequin Great Dane who just passed away.
Also, I was reading some nutrition information on your website about a homemade diet adding years to a Great Dane's life. I was wondering how to do this. Do you have any reciepes? And, exactly how much should I be feeding my dog. Right now she gets 3 1/2 cups of food twice/day.

can not get my eight month old dane to stop eating the couches have any suggestions

you can try putting cayene pepper in the holes. but the best thing to do is to scold your dog and offer them something apropriate to chew on like a toy

I have a great dane that we adopted from rescue. she and our old dog(a boxer) got along great but then we started to notice a couple fatty bumps on their body and we brought them to the vet and he told us that they were tumers but by then they were too old to have them removed...we just got a dogue de bordeaux and we are all scare that she will get one to....can anyone please explain what is happening and what we could do to prevent this or what may be causing this

I had a sheltie that recently passed, and she was literally covered in fatty tumors. They're not harmful, and she lived to be 15 even though she got her first tomor around the age of 7 or 8. We called her our lumpy lady and she was never uncomfortable because of the tumors. We did get her biopsied every time a new tumor showed up, just to be safe, but each one was just a fatty deposit, and she was fine. She did not die from anything related to the tumors, either. Hope that helps!

Most dogs will usually get fatty tumors as they get older. Our dane had many. They are usually harmless. most fatty tumors occur under the skin but above the muscle. be careful of the ones by the chest that are inmobile, meaning you can't feel underneath the tumor. Our dane had one of these that was surgically removed, turned out that it was starting to burrow into the chest wall.

I have had my great dane for 6 months now and he has had diarea the entire time. He seems happy and healthy. Hes had stool samples at the vet twice and nothing has showed up. He firmed up for a few weeks when I first switched him to eagle pack and used to firm up from a bland diet but no longer does... what can i do to make him regular?

Iams Large Breed works well for our Dane.

We have learned with our female great dane who has had diarrea often that it was the content of her food that was causing it. It was the chicken and the fillers they use in the dog food. Corn also made her lose her hair. We have been using lamb meal and rice and nothing else and that has made a huge difference. As long as that is the only thing she eats she is fine, any table scraps or raw hides or ham bones most of all and again anything with chicken in it will cause her to have loose stools.

Canned Pumpkin (Not Pie Filling) will help with the stool if it's a temporary thing. 2x boiled chicken breast will flush out their digestive track. A probiotic tablet will correct unbalanced digestive enzymes. If all else fails put the dog on the raw meat diet (AKA B.A.R.F.) and if that works then you know they are allergic to kibble.

Pepto Bismol will firm his stool up. I had the exact same issue with my dane Thor. I gave him 2 chewable tabs a day. He wouldn't eat them without putting some peanut butter on them but once he did his stool returned to normal. It took around two weeks and then I was able to take him off the Pepto. You will see results within 24 hours

My brother has 2 dogs. My great dane gets along with the male but not the female what can I do to correct this?

well if your dog is a female...sometimes dogs have dominance problems over who is the boss and who isn't. it's just a heading problem.

I have 2 Dane pups, 7 months old. I have been feeding Eagle Pack Holistic for large breed puppies. They have been doing great until last week. My mantle went off feed and very quickly started vomiting and projectile diarrhea. He underwent surgery for an obstruction, but there was no obstruction, he is doing as well as can be expected from the surgery, bit we still don't know what caused this. My other dane has the same thing now. The vet has no idea what is wrong with them. Has anyone experienced this???

mabey it's just the food...they have been having recalls alot about dog food and stay away from food products with corn in it....we have been feeding our great dane a simple gravy train with water for 9 years(she is unbelievably 11 years old)

It seems like a Great Dane will be the best fit for me as far as temperment/exercise needs/doing well inside/alone(while at work etc). I like big dogs but I'm concerned a Dane might just be TOO big. I live alone in a fairly small home (about 1000sf) and might move into an apartment within the next few years. Would a Great Dane be comfortable/happy in that space? Will it knock the house over?

As long as you have a place for the dog to roam outside and you exercise the dog regularly they will be fine. Yes they will knock the house over...they are not graceful. My boys tail will clear a table.

I have been battling puppy diarrhea for almost two months now with my 8 month old dane. He has been to the vet for it twice, they have run stool tests, which came back negative for parasites, disease and viruses and they give me probiotics for him. I have put him on a bland diet and yet the problem persists. His growth is normal and his behavior is normal. The only abnormal thing about Thor is his runny stool. Any ideas how I can help him?

My Dane was having very soft stools. I switched her to a grain-free food. It's called Taste of The Wild ( Pacific Ocean). There are other flavors. It has worked well with her system. Here stools are solid and smaller. It has also improved her coat.

Have him checked for intestinal worms! My dog caught worms several times from the dog park!

I did switch his food and the problem remained. I did some research on the web and found that I can give him Pepto. I called my Vet who said that it was okay and sure enough within 12 hours his stool was firm. Dosage is based on weight of the animal.

Have you tried switching his food? My dog had diarreah and i found out it was because i was giving him the wrong food. Are you giving him people food? You should also never give your dog that, they will become stubborn and won't eat their dog food.

I have been doing my research on Great Danes and I am planning on getting one within the next couple of years. However, one answer I can't find anywhere is how long a Great Dane can be left on its own during the day. I understand they should not be left alone for long periods of time but I will need to work to pay for all the vet bills and food the dog will need! Can anyone help me or even tell me how they cope with a Great Dane and a job?

my greatdane is fine to be left alone all the time...sometimes if i left food on the counter she will get it but other times she wouldn't even tinkle alittle bit.they love to run so have a place or time for that. goodluck

The general rule of thumb is one hour for every month the puppy is (3 months old, 3 hours in a crate) but it should never exceed 8 hours. If you have a doggy door, the dog can relieve himself so it's not as much of an emergency but Great Danes require alot of companionship, and can be destructive if they are not given enough attention. :) Hope this helps!
In my opinion, dogs mostly sleep during the day, and of course everyone has to work. It's really about making your dog a priority, and making sure that if you are able, you come home at lunch, or come home after work and spend quality time (walking, playing, training) as often as possible.

i recently bought a great dane 14 months old is it possiable that she has worms because she is so thin or how can i have gain weight properly?

I would definately take her to the vet. My pup had been wormed as all pups are but ended up getting heartworms from sneaking into my sisters cats litter box, and her cat had worms... I noticed he was a lot thinner and at first just contributed it to his going through the lanky stage. But eventually he ended up with soft stools and then diarrhea.
They will ask you to bring in a stool sample and they can test it and let you know. I would do that and if she does have something they can treat her.
And after that, definately get her on a monthly heartworm medication, such as heartguard plus or revolution, you can ask your vet. It's a lot cheaper to pay for that every month then the stuff they have to give them if they end up with worms.
And she'll feel so much better

Do Great Danes do well with children?

i have an 11 year old great dane and my 5 year old cousin will come over and she is fine...the licking is a habit of hers but my cousin love his(big puppy).and she loves him

Because of their large size, Danes may nock over a very small child. Always supervise children around any dog. Great danes love children!

I have 2 danes and a 2 year old son. The are his best friends other then his 7 year old sister.

Can a 14 month Great Dane still get her ears cropped?

No, they have to be cropped when they are very young so that as they grow, the cartilage in their ears will stiffen. Once they have floppy ears and are grown, their cartilage will not stiffen.

Would it be okay to have a smaller dog with a Great Dane? Or would the dog trample it?

introduction is always first. be very carful of overhyper small cats, children, dogs, etc.around your big dog. if so then keep a look out. mine cant be with my dogue de bordeaux because my great dane is old and doesnt want to fool with an overactive dog smaller than her

If supervised when first introduced. Danes are generaly good with other pets. I have 6 Danes in my home with 2 cats,a ferret,a cockatiel, and two children. Everyone gets along geat.

Putting them together will be ok if you teached him but if you didn't properly train him, it could be a risk

We have a 6 month old harlequin male and thinking of either studding him or getting a female and breed them. At what age is is safe for either male or female to start breeding and how often should we allow it to happen?

If you would like to get into breedig Danes first you should have them tested. You wouldn't want to pass on defective genes to puppies. Do lots of research. Danes do not stop growing until at least 2 years of age. No breeding before the age of 2 years. Responsible breeders are deticated to improving the breed.

HELP- I have a 6 month old great dane who is stubborn- he has recently started running from us when outside or told to do something he does not want to do. He also has growled and tryed to bite at my hand when i tryed to get him off the couch to give him bath. He also is scared of people, he tends to hide and bark at them. I dont know what to do to socialize him or to teach him to not run from us. His stubborness has to stop. Please help i dont know what kind of training he needs. I was told petsmart has puppy training classes, not sure they would help.

I trained my dog using a shock collar. It works great. It has a tone button that I use as a warning for her and if she doesn't listen then I will shock her. It really didn't even take her very long to learn that when she heard the tone if she didn't come back or stop what she was doing she was going to get shocked. I don't even use a leash anymore.
As for being scared of people mine does the same thing. I have started to take her to a dog park about once a week and she is doing much much better. She is starting to go up to people she doesn't know and let them pet her.

If you do not have a fenced in yard you should consider fencing it in. Then when you take him out he cant run anywhere you dont want him too. My Dane would walk next to me as a young puppy but as he got bigger and matured I had to leash him every time I go outside with him. I decided to get a pincher collar as well to control insubordination. A tug on the collar with enough force to get his attention without hurting him has done the trick. Finally, YOU MUST BE CONSISTENT!!! Reward for good behavior and be stern with the dog when he behaves poorly. It takes some patience and some effort but it will work.

My boyfriend and i just baught a 3 month old Grate Dane. we love her to death and she is the sweetest dog but she has a bit of a bitting problem. We have tried everything. Why does she do this? is there a time when she will stop? thank you

Also, instead of saying "no bite" make a LOUD screeching/squealing noise. Something that is very unpleasant. When puppies play with their litter mates, they learn boundaries by their siblings yelps. This is natural to them. Also...there's a difference in chewing and biting.
Chewing means they do not have enough stimulation, and you should consider getting Bully Bands (similar to Rawhides but much healthier), and other chew toys.
Alot of times puppies bite when they are teething...once again, the bones will help.
Other than that, trying the yelping, and whenever he lunges turn around completely and ignore him. Don't pay attention or give affection until they are calm, and not biting. If they try it again, turn around. They will learn that biting leads to being ignored. Biting=boring. :)

Additionally to the previous post, ALWAYS tell the puppy NO BITE or whatever code words you would like. Do this in a stern manner. My puppy has began listening to that command and will stop...unless he is wound up and needing playtime. When that happens I play with the dog for a bit then rub his side and tell him NO BITE and he calms down.

All puppies are going to bite a lot when they are very young. It isn't just Great Danes. Normally they grow out of it after around 8-10 months, but they might bite longer than that.

We bred our Great Dane and now the female, a Harlequin, has 9 puppies. Ours is a mantle. They people that own the female also have a 10 month old all black dane. Is it possible that the puppies are the 10 month olds and not our danes? How old must a Dane be before he can breed? There are no mantles in the litter. Just black ones and Harlequins and one Blue Merle.

Highly possible they weren't responsible enough to keep the dogs seperate and the 10 month old puppy bred with her. Mantles usually produce mantles especially when bred with a Harlequin.

normally people dont breed merles - because a double merle can lead to blindness. Harlequins tend to throw out a variety of colors. So its possible that she was bred with either dog.

I have a 7 month old Great Dane. I got her when she was 3 months old. She has never been abused. The problem that I am having is she is scared of other people. It took her a month before she would let my roomate touch her. Anytime she meets some one new she will just bark at them. If they get to close to her, she runs away and hided behind me. The only way she will let them pet her is if I am holding her by the collar. Once I let go she runs away. I have tried to have as many people as I can feed her treats, pet her, play with her, etc. With no luck. Any ideas?

I don't know if this will help anyone else but I am the owner of the dog above. I have been taking her to dog parks where she can meet other people and other dogs. She is still a little shy but she is coming around.

I had the same problem with my great dane when he was younger (about 6 months old), i took him to a trainer for attack training, he gained confidence afterwards and is actually doing fine now. note that you shouldn't be around that training though cause it might break your heart. :(

About a year ago we acquired a rescued Dane who was 13 months old and severely neglected. In the year we have had her she has gained 25 pounds. She is small for a Dane only measuring 27 inches and weighing 86 pounds. She eats 6 cups a day. Is it possible that due to her neglect and improper feeding as a puppy, her growth was stunted?

In answer to your question, any dog that is neglected during it's most important "growing" time ( up to 2 years for some dogs ) will undoubtly suffer problems whether they are growth problems or social problems. I'm not too sure what 6 cups means ( I only assume you are American ) but you should split the meal into two ( once in the morning and once in the evenings ) do not excercise your dog one hour before its meal or within two hours after a meal.
I'm sure if she could talk she would tell you how much she appreciates having a loving kind owner as you. Enjow your dog and have fun.

We recently purchased a puppy brendal great dane and right from the get go there have been alot of problems most of which we made sure was taken care of. A little over two weeks after getting over phnemonia and strep throat, scoobys eye started to become puffy and red. Im really worried about it cause it just doesn't look right. Hes four months old and a little over 45 pounds. Ive tried cleaning it with a warm wash cloth, but it doesnt seem to be helping. What should I do?

Take your dog to the Vet

We have just rescued a Great Dane from our local pound I used to breed Mini Dachshunds and Standard Poodles, Our Dane seems to drink alot of water how much is too much?

Great Danes are big dogs, if you are feeding dry meal then it will drink, if you really think it is drinking excessivly then you should assure yourself that there is nothing wrong with him, for example, liver problems, diabetes, and have a blood test conducted at the local vets.

i am expecting a baby in july and thinking of getting a 3 month old great dane in a couple of weeks, is this ok or would you wait till the baby is born?

Personally I would wait. Puppies are just like babies and need a lot of time and attention. They will throw tantrums in the middle of the night, run circles in the house if bored ( what if you want to set the baby on the floor for play time....puppies and dogs don't understand their feet and claws could harm a small child or baby). And, of course they need to be let outside every couple of hours to relieve themselves. Babies also need to eat every couple of hours or more. You will just find yourself stressed and neglecting the needs of the puppy. Wait until after you have the baby.

Have you thought about how you will manage with a new baby and a dog?
Is this your first baby? do you realise how much time a new baby needs? Please do not even consider getting a new dog to join the family untill the baby is born and you are sure you can cope with a dog.
There is no point in taking charge of a new puppy/dog if you think you can just open the kitchen door and kick it into the garden for half an hour to do its business, they need walking ( regularly ) whether its raining, snowing, strong winds or sunny days and they can't always wait till you decide to get up in the morning at 10:00.
But whatever you decide to do, please think about it really seriously before you get the dog, would be a great shame if you had to decide to give the dog up for adoption to a new family three months after you got it. Just think about it, you wouldnt give the baby up for adoption and keep the dog...would you?

We waited to get our Great Dane(Bubba)because we read that they were very jealous dogs. I think it is better to wait untill the baby is born, then get the Dane. When we got Bubba and brought him home I believe he realized that my son was here first and cut down on the jealousy factor. Also bubba became very protective of our son, and they are the best of friends now.

My mother-in-law has a female dawn Dane and I don't think that they are feeding the dog as much and as often as they should. They won't do free feeding but the Dane has lost weight since coming to the house. She is only getting 4 cups of food twice a day. I am wondering how much an 8 month puppy should be getting in food. Can anyone help me?

Our 51/2 month old male dane is eating about 6 cups/day (2 cups 3X a day). The vet said about 6-8 cups is good. Follow the bag recommendations for age and mature weight (although all food is different). You want a lean dane, and females are more streamlined then males. She will fill out after 12-18 months - dane pups are gangly. As long as you can feel but not see the ribs and only the last rib is barely visible on standing. If she hangs around the bowl seeming hungry, they can add a 1/2 cup to se how she does. But body condition is best indicator, because some pups will eat and not stop! Hope this helps!

I have a 5 month old dane and i switched to half raw diet and half kibbles a month ago and lately he appears to be not eating kibbles anymore. What should i do? I'm scared he wont grow as big as he's supposed to be. thanks.

Switch to fully RAW! He will achieve his maximum height on raw, if you feed it correctly.
His diet should consist of 60% raw meaty bones (such as chicken wings), 40% other meat (such as mince, tripe, hearts) and 10% offal (such as liver and kidneys)
There are many helpful websites on the internet, as well as some diet menus.
Just search 'how to feed raw', or 'raw menus for dogs' on Google.

My family is awainting the birth of our first dane. Although we have done our homework we still cannot deside on a male or female. Does it really matter? We are wondering of anywone would recoment a certain sex for the fist one, being that we arent really familiar with the bred? Is one more 'laid back' or stubborn? Thank you.

Hi! I have 2 great dane sisters that are a year old now. They are phenominal. I rescued them and had so many people tell me that they would not get alone, nor would they bond with me. They get along great, and are extremely gentle, loving, and obedient. My cousin had a male Dane from the same litter and ended up re-homing him because the pup was so stubborn and my cousing did not have the skills to train him. I don't know that our experiences are typical though. When you go to pick your pup, you should meet the parents, watch the pups watch thier personality, be very selective. If you get a pup that is more naturally alpha than they will be much harder to train. Make sure you train your GD pup immediately, they grow fast. If you start training right away and make ure you pup knows you are boss, you will likely not have any problems at all, my danes are the sweetest and most gentle dogs I have evr owned, and Ive recued quite a few pups. Hope that helps. :)

Just womdering if Danes slobber a lot? I've always wanted one amd am still hoping that some day (soon!), we'll welcome one into our family!
Thanks y'all!

We have a 4 year old male fawn Dane (looks like Marmaduke) and I have to say he DOES slobber A LOT! He has the traditional deep jowls and can look like Niagra Falls after drinking out of the water bowl! I found to reduce that, I put ice cubed in the bowl and not as much water. On a hot day, he can rival anything that has been in the movies Ghostbusters- we keep "slobber rags" (which are full sized towels) handy because we get slimed frequently. We just got a 5 month old Belgian Shepherd puppy and he also seems to use her as his personal slobber rag. ;-)

I can tell you from experience that great danes do sometimes slobber especially males. they are the epitimy of male versus female roles. Males are more clumsy at times and arent very gracious where as FEMALES are very graceful and they prance as they walk and my female doesnt slobber except when she gets hot outside running or right after drinking. But their slobbering is nothing a quick paper towel wouldnt take care of. btw I have 3 danes in my house so u tell me am i right or not? lol hope i could help

No. Not at all as much as you get to be scared of by hearing. My great dane, Sheru who is now 6 months old, does not sloober.

I have a two year old dane and he just does not seem to gain weight what can i do to help fill him out?

You can try free feeding him and allowing him to eat as much as he wants. My dane didn't really fill out until he was 3 years old.

My great dane is 9 months old and weighs 160 pounds. Is that normal. He does not look over weight. Also he is about 35 inch tall. How much bigger will he get?

What was his height when he was 6 months old ? Mine is 27 inches .

Yes it is normal he is just going to be a big dane!

I'm looking to get a Great Dane but due to the area that I live in, I can't afford anything other then an apartment. Does anyone know how a Great Danes do in an apartment?

My angel is wonderful in every apartment we have been in. As long as they get plenty of attention and enough time to exercise outside, you will have a happy dane no matter what. All they care about is being with you.

If you have a time to walk your Dane normally, you'll have perfect dog!

I have a 11 month old Great Dane and I would like to know at what age will she stop growing and what part of the body do you measure her height.

Great Danes can grow in height for up to 2 yrs, and then finish filling out for the next yr.
You measure their height at the top of their shoulder blade, at the withers.

My Great Dane is 11 months and has red boils near his mouth. Also, like human beings have dandruff on head he has dandruff on his body with small boils somewhere. His toes are also having few while colored boils. Any Ideas?

sounds like a staph infection to me....if it were only on the face we call it puppy acne but with it being everywhere you should take your pup to the vet for a skin scrape

I have a male Golden Retriever (Packer) who is going to be 7 years old and a female Great Dane puppy (Zoe) who is 10 months old. Packer is the dominant dog (alpha), but he is intimidated by Zoe just because of her size. Zoe started out being the submissive dog (omega), but that seems to be changing as she gets bigger and bigger. Is there anything I can do to keep Packer my older dog as the alpha male? I have been faithful at always feeding Packer first, giving him first choice of toys, and giving him my first attention. She's just so BIG compared to him! She's not aggressive; she's just a puppy and plays like one.

try to let your retriever eat first thats what I did with mine.

i have a grate dane of 3 months old but he still do the bathroom in side the home.even i took him out for an hour after eating, he dose'nt do outside .as he come inside the home he immadatly do.i dont know what to do?

You should definitely try crate training. Keep him in his crate all the time unless you can't supervise him VERY well. It seems mean, but it's temporary, and it truly is the best way to housebreak a dog. When you can't watch him, put him in his crate with a comfortable bed and some chew toys and water.
As soon as you take him out of his crate, IMMEDIATELY go outside. If he potties in the house yell really loudly "UH UH!" and run outside with them. They will probably have been startled and will have more to go outside. As soon as they potty outside give lavish praises, even treats. Make a huge production out of him pottying outside.
When he's out with you in the house watch for signs...slowing down, sniffing, walking away from you. I have actually kept my dogs on a leash in the house to keep them with me and it worked fabulously. As soon as you see something that looks like he might need to potty take him outside and do the same routine.
If he doesn't go outside you can try to put him back in his crate and try to take him out again 30 minutes later. Doing this CONSISTENTLY for a few weeks/months should help alot :)
Also make sure you clean the spots in the house up with a very strong pet odor cleaner. If they smell it, it will be very difficult to get them to stop. :P)

after lunch or after playing 15 minutes later go outside and make a little ride with him
u be sure to see puppy make something:)

I really would love to have a Great Dane, but my parents are a bit worried and my mom doesn't want one, because she says she would have to feed it (she always feeds the animals and that's why she doesn't want anymore). Aside from that, we have a small kennel outside thats about 8-10 foot wide, and about 20 feet wide. I that good or bad for a Dane? Even if I take him out of there and excersize him?

You can't really blame her for that if she would have to care for the dog. The average male gets to be more than 150 pounds at 3 years and the females get between 120 and 140 so that is alot of dog for your mom to have to care for. I suggest do alot of research on the Great Dane and speak to breeders who have been breeding for more than 15 years. If they keep their dogs outside 24/7 and charge cheap prices then all they care about is the money. Stay away from these so called "breeders"

hi my black dane have now 7 month ans have 32 inches et 95 pounds.. i wanna know if i can see him coming bigger soon?

Yes. Females reach their adult height and weight around 2 years. Males around 3 years. I have a 2 year old male who still has alot of filling out to and he is 37 inches 152 pounds. My girl is 33 inches and 109 pounds at 1 year.

Yes, Danes do not stop growing at age 7 months. Expect him to become alot bigger.

My parents are thinking about getting a dog. This is gate because I have been begging for years. But the thing is that my parents want a basset hound, a bulldog or a grate dane. I really want a grate dane. What should I do?

you really should research all the breeds, and then prove to your parents that a great dane is the best, for instance : Bulldogs have breathing problems! Basset Hounds drool everywhere, and you'll end up doing three loads of laundry a day! & lastly Great Danes are prone to cancer more than any other purebred breed! Take that information to your parents, and you might be suprised how much all of these dogs cost if you don't buy from a reputable breeder!!!!

Reseach and prove to them why this dog is better than the other dogs. Also find out the bad with the good. Great Danes eat alot and grow very big

I have 2 small children and and we live in the country, I want a dog that is good with kids but will still be a tough watch dog , will a great dane be good ?

I have a 2 year old son and an 8 month old great dane, who despite normal growth patterns, is already 140 pounds and 34 1/2 inches tall. He is a giant. He is extremely gentle, but still IS a puppy. The only thing that we have ever had to be careful with was him getting excited and knocking my son over when he runs by. Besides that he is fantastic. Great danes start to act more regal and calm down around age 2. Until they im sure he will have alot of excitement in him, but he is a joy to our household and a beautiful and loyal animal. I highly suggest a great dane to anyone with children. My son will at times pull on or at him when he thinks im not paying attention and Milo will just lay there and look at him. Everyone knows that with small children it takes time for them to know that a dog isnt a toy, until they learn, you wont have to worry about the occasional tug, slap, or pull.... my dane pretends it doesnt even happen.

When or if you decide to buy one make sure he does not lean on the kids

My grandson received a Great Dane (full grown rescue dog) when he was 2 years old. They bonded immediately but I now have a problem. Pharoah barked once and scared my grandson to tears and he has not barked since. My grandson is now 9 years old. Vet says he is very healthly - anyone have a similar problem?

Danes generally are a deterrant in and of themselves. Their size and bark alone is enough to scare off the toughest of people. Danes by nature will not be biters...they may hold someone but they are not attack dogs. But if you just want a dog that is great with kids and will warn strangers to watch their step...the Dane is great!

Yes, but make sure you teach the children that the dog is no toy.

Great Danes are extremely gentle despite their size, which can be intimidating. I’ve found that most Great Danes are very yard/house protective, but they won’t bite. If someone new or suspicious comes around they will firm up and give a dark bark which normally gets the job done. So yes, if you can deal with their size, Great Danes are wonderful with kids.

Mine is 3 months old and his weight is 15kg. Is his weight ok as per his age? Most of the times he is busy sleeping, is it normal?

Iams

check the puppy's food, XL breeds should not have a lot of protein as puppies. We feed our puppy Bil Jac large breed puppy food and is growing a t a great amount of speed.

I have a five month old Dane and he is about 65 LBS. My Vet said you dont want them to grow to fast as long as there ribs arent sticking out and they dont look malnutritioned dont worry. She also said they grow in spurts.

Yes it is normal that he sleeps alot. But wait, I've heard of 3 mo. old danes weighing over 60 pounds!

I have not bought a Great Dane yet but want to. My question is how much dog food do Great Danes eat? Also I would like to know how is the easiest way to house train or any kind of training?

Our 3 month Merle Great Dane will tell us that he wants to eat. He will lay on the floor and drag himself towards the dog food bad. He continually watches the bag as though he expects the food to magically get into his bowl. If that doesn't work then he sits at the edge of the carpet where the kitchen floor and carpet meet and talks to the bag. He will also come up to us and use his front paw as if trying to take us by the hand to feed him. We feed 3 times daily and he will walk away from food when he is full. Great Danes are so animated and if you pay attention they will tell you exactly what they need or want.

puppies eat alot but they will let you know when they want to eat... if you get one try wellness its on the expenseve side but all natrual less of a mess on the bathroom side..lol

My baby eats about 30lbs every 2 weeks. Food costs should be the least of your worries. I have owned 3 great danes in the past 7 years. I must tell you that cancer is prevelent in large/giant breeds. We thought we had done our research and new all the medical issues we "might" face. No where was cancer mentioned, until we had it. Then while researching the cancer guess what was listed as one of the top breeds w/cancer. I don't want to scare you away from the breed, I absolutely love everything about the breed. I want to make sure that you get info that we never had before our first dane. If you opt to go the great dane route, buy pet insurance. The best purchase (other than our babies) we ever made.

take the puppy out about every 1-3 hours depending on its age. When you are about to take him out and are by the door repeat the word outside a lot a lot a lot in a happy cheerful voice. When the puppy relieves himself, give him tons of praises saying, "Good outside!" in a high happy cheerful voice.

My Dane is 4yrs old and eats a 22 lb bag w/in 10 days and drinks lots and lots of water. The best way to house train is to use a crate or kennel. It gives the dog security and helps keep your home secure. Generally a dog will not go the bathroom where they sleep so as soon as the dog exits the crate or kennel take it out to relieve itself. Another key is as soon as the dog awakes take it out ASAP.

Mine eats about 2 35lbs bags a month. He only weighs 107lbs. A larger Dane may eat more.
