Are pure bred Lhasa Apso puppies ever born with no tail?

We have a five year old male Lhasa. Whenever someone sings he howls...is that normal? We've never noticed it in the years past. Just a year ago when we were singing happy birthday he began howling like it hurts his ears...is that possible? If so it seems like we would have noticed that earlier. Were curious to know if its a problem or just part of the breed?

I previously had a Cocker Spaniel who would sing (howl) when I played a musical instrument. It's absolutely normal and kind of cool! I also read it somewhere about how Lhasa Apsos like music and sings along.

I am thinking about getting an 11 year old lhasa apso that has been abandoned. I have 4 cats rangeing in age from 5 to 20. Does this breed have a tendancy to be aggressive towards cats?

Lhasa's can be a bit anoyed somtimes, but my dog he is very playful and loooooooooooves cats, he sees one and goes crazy, it like omg! But since your Lhasa is about 11 I think it will do great with those cats :)

I have a lhasa apso who is quite playful with my 2 cats at home. But he gets jumpy at times and shows a little aggression if he gets irritated with them.

My Lhasa has had an ear yeast infection for months now, his ears have the yellowish/brown debri in the ear, he has a smelly odor from his ears, and if i itch his ear, he likes it but if i do it too hard he whines. 5 vets had to hold him down and give him that shot to calm him, he won't allow anyone to put drops in his ear, even so rub and cleanse it! I've heard that yogurt seems to be a good product for curing the infection. Has anyone had experience with this? I need something that won't bother him, and make him be afraid of me, anything that includes rubbing something in the ear is not what i need. Any Suggestions?

Oral antibiotics from your vet are very helpful to clear it up but I am not sure it will work by itself without cleaning the ears too. I have a Llaso with ear problems and we keep his ears very clean and dry. Shave the inner part of the ear flap and pluck the hair out of the ear canal so air can get in there. When I sit with him on the chair I fold his ears over so that air can get to the canal. He didn't like it at first but now it is like a game to him. Stay away from any ear cleaning solutions that contain alcohol as this can promote fungal growth. I always use ear solution purchased from our vet.

What happens if you don't cure an ear infection?

Is it safe to give your dog peanut butter? What is the purpose for doing it? How much of it can you give your dog?

yes its fine to give them peanut butter. i have two dogs and we give them peanut butter. but i wouldnt give them to much. we bought a little toy called a Kong and you stuff peanut butter in there when you leave for a while, or just for a once a week treat. you can find them at petco and usualy petsmart

Whats the difference between Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso?

Are Lhasa Apso's good swimmer? Do they like the water? My Lhasa doesn't have long hair, will that make it easier for him to swim? He also has webbed feet. He's purebred.

My Lhasa Apso isn't as hairy as the other Lhasa Apso I've seen. She is only 2-3 months old. Will her hair grow longer?

Yes, for my dog it takes about 6 months for long hair. If you want hair that touches the floor it should take about 2 year. But remember to groom it every day because it gets mats easily and you don't want that.

Yes, the ideal of a Lhasa is to have a long hair, but it takes time and not all Lhasas have the same long hair. Which means that you shouldn't worry about it.

My lhasa apso's lower lip does not cover the teeth should i be worried?

Actually I think you should ask a vet, I'm not sure if it's that bad. Is it red?

No, my lhasa apso, he has teeth sticking out too, but you can never see them unless he lays down on his back. Your dog probably just has an upper cut, like others have lower cuts, when their bottom teeth stick out.

how to treat the scavies of my lhasa apso? the easiest and the fastest way. my lhasa apso is new. it's pure breed. but when we bought the lhasa apso it has scavies already.

Can you give a breif description of the scavies?

what is a safe age to breed my lhasa apso

I think the best time would be at least 2 years of age. If any younger that would be too early and may cause the pups to be unhealthy or it might affect your dog.

how often should you feed a puppy and which brand?

It's best to feed your lhasa apso puppy at least 2 to 3 times a day, because it's needs the most maximum energy for it to be strong, healthy, and it helps the skin to grow shiny. I don't know the brand but try to buy the ones with more meat. Like if you look in the ingredients label, the first one shouldn't be wheat but meat. That is your choice though, and I prefer that because my puppy is a bit picky, but now he is beautiful. He doesn't have any skin problems and is in perfect shape. When they grow up you should feed them max of 2 times a day, or they will become quite chubby.

I own a female Lhasa Apso. She is my best friend. Her hair is curly and short. I have let it grow but does not grow long. Why?

Are you sure your lhasa apso is pure bred? It's strange that you say she has curly hair that does not grow long because a pretty dominant trait of lhasas are a long, thick straight coat. Perhaps your lhasa apso is mixed with a poodle or some other breed. If not, then there is not much that you can do about it.

I own a lhasa apso of 5 years old.it is not eating properly. What type of food would you suggest to increase his appetite?

You should buy food where the first ingredient is meat. They love the taste, if it still doesn't eat, try canned food. Mix the canned food such as Cesar with the dog food. That should satisfy your dog.

Try switching him to a different diet. Some dogs can be pretty picky about their food. Some brands which I've heard to appeal to dogs (and are healthy for them too) are Innova EVO or Blue Buffalo. If dry food doesn't appeal to your dog, maybe you should try a BARF (all raw diet) or one consisting of cooked rice, chicken and vegetables.

I own a female Lhasa Apso how often do the menstrate? How long is their mating cycle?

Do they shed?

Not that much if you groom them regularly.

We have our first Lhasa Apso puppies. We are absolutely in love with this dog and this breed. My question is about the eye hair. My groomer has been doing a great job of keeping the corners of her eyes neatly trimmed and I clean her tears almost daily. However, I would like to tie her hair up in a top knot like I see on some of the show dogs and wondered if it is right to let all of the hair around her eyes grow out or do I still need to keep the corners trimmed? Thank you for any help you can give me.

As long as you will be able to take care of his eye problems, it would be fine. It's best if you cut the hair near the eyes, but you can leave the hair on the head and beard and everywhere you want it.

hi i have just purchased a lhasa apso she is brindle and loving but just one query she has no tail is this normal or is there a breed of lhasa apso without tail please return any info thanks as my vet says it has not been docked

I think it might be a mixed breed, there are dogs born without tails, abnormaly, but there are also breeds of dogs who don't have tails. I don't think it will be a big problem.

my little guy is a real fussy eater. He's 2 years old, 3 in january. He's been like this the whole time. I need him on dry food. he'll go a couple days or even a week with very little food. tidbits really. I've tried alot of food over the past 2years. he fluxuates in weight due to his poor eating habbits. the only food that i've been able to give him is that wet ceaser crap. I try to mix it with dry food, but he spits the dry out. i've tried some good brands like evo 93 different flavors, nutro, nutrience etc..... This can't be healthy, but aside from your normal fatigness, he's quite active. Any advice, are these breeds perhaps picky and very small eaters?

I'm with you, my dog is exactly like yours and the same age, he is extremely picky and i give them these kinds of brands; look on the back of the bag where it says ingredients, the first one should be meat. They love that. I don't know the brand name but they have it at petco for sure. It's not that expensive. The cesar things, I use them to mix with hes food, he also doesn't finish it all up. But if he doesn't i leave it until he gets hungry. Never by any chance give your dog human food while training him. He won't eat his dog food! That's my experience. He just has to live with what you give him. If he doesn't eat it, I'm not sure what you have to do then.

try wetting his dry food, so that he thinks that it is wet. Maybe it is the texture that he likes/ dislikes.

do most lhasa apso's have web feet?

Yes my Lhasa Apso has webbed feet, but only on his front paws, I know he's purebred but i don't know why it is only on his front paws.

I don't think that most Lhasas have webbed feet, but I know that mine is a purebred and he has webbed feet. But don't worry that is a good thing, your dog will be able to swim fast. Maybe even faster than a duck. Labradors are one breed of dog that have webbed feet, and they swim extremely fast.

My Lhasa Apso is a purebred, he has webbed feet.

I have eight lhasas and none of them have webbed feet. Is yours a pure bred?

I have a Lhasa-apso,and i'm pretty sure the answer is no.

Anxiety when i leave the home and gets over excited when i come home. Is there anythign i can do to settle him down wheni come in. he is 4 yrs old.

If you can, try to spend more time with the dog and if he is still over excited, i don't think its a bad problem. Maybe try to calm him somehow?

I have a norwich terrier and she acts the same way I usually let her out to go potty and give her a treat and just stay mellow once she realizes that she is not getting attention by acting crazy she usually settles. As soon as I notice that she is calm I greet her. She is starting to realize that I will not greet her until she calms down.

I don't have a Lhasa Apso but I have found with my dogs that if I give them a special treat when I leave the house they don't get upset and actually look forward to the treat. Try not to give that treat at other times. When I come home I don't make a big deal of it. I actually ignore them and find something to do until they settle down. Then I pet and greet them. They seem to mirror my energy level...so stay calm when you walk in the door. No high pitched or excited greetings. Give them a couple of minutes then greet them. Hope this helps you too.
