Mastiff Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

I have a 1.5 year old male and was wondering how much he should be getting food wise to keep him healthy and how often should he be feed to prevent this blot.

My 7-month-old English Mastiff weighs about 65 pounds. Is this average for her age? My vet told me he doesn't think she'll get bigger than 100 pounds, but I am hoping that she more than doubles this weight. Any thoughts?
You need to look at the size of her sire & dam and others in her lineage... That will be the best indication of the eventual size of your pup.
My female english puppy is just below 100lbs at 8 months.... The vet told us to expect 130 as an adult minimum.
My female ranged between 165 and 200 lbs. They are not full grown until 2-3 years old.

My 9 1/2 years old English Mastiff could not get up on her own any more. She has severe hip arthritis which we try to control with doctor prescribed meds. 2 days ago my husband and I notice that she shakes her head, more like a tremor, when we helping her on her feet. Also it seemed like she does not recognize her surroundings when she's outside on her very own fenced backyard. Any advice?!

I have a 10 or 11 month old male and I regularly have about 15 people over at my house throughout the week... he is very social towards them but whenever anyone new comes over he is very timid and often aggresive.... any advice on how to correct this?
I have a 4 yr old mastiff hes like that with everyone. we tell people to let him approach you. hell let them know when its ok. we try to have him meet new people outside before they come in.we always use a firm tone with him when new people come he tends to react more if he knows there scared. hes the best with children even if he doesnt know them
My mastiff is the same way. It's natural for them to be friendly but if someone comes up they will try to guard their territory. I wouldn't be alarmed. They won't bite usually. They are great guard dogs for owners and are very protective.
Post Response
Is it normal for my 3 month old female to growl at stangers that come into the house? After I say its 'ok,' she wags her tail. It seems to be people that she hasnt seen before. Is this a sign of aggression?
If I were you, I'd be relieved to know your English Mastiff is doing exactly what her ancient instincts are telling her to do. English Mastiff's have a great history of being the large guardian dog. Google "English Mastiff history." Enjoy

How much shoulrld I be feeding my 17 month old mastiff male?
I have a 2 year old female mastiff and always leave food down for her. I put her food in a large bowl and place it on a dog food lift. This allows her to eat as she wants and in return she gets less air in her stomach and less chance of having her stomach flip.

My mastiff is around 7 months, and I must say that he is the smartest dog I have ever had, I have read not to over exert them would a mile per day be over exertion? if so what would be the right amount of excercize for him ?
over the entire day, no that not too much .Just dont walk him that much at one time , straight line walking and playing is best for now after about 18m. let them do what ever they want. Best exersize for 18m and under take them swimming good exersize and it wont hurt there joints

I just bought an English Mastiff puppy turned 8 weeks on April 12th. I was just told he has PPM but they (vet) did not seem to concerned. Told me top just watch the "haze" to make sure it didn ot get any bigger. Right now it is not affecting vision or painful. Will this end up causing problems? Should I let the breeder know?

My 5-month old english mastiff puppy is only 29 pounds...we are increasing her food from 2 cups a day to 3...any other ideas?
give it real raw meat like chiken, every day and add some egg to the dry frood, once per week
I don't know how long ago you posted this, but the best food that you can buy at this point is Eagle Pack Holistic Puppy Giant Breed Formula. Mine just turned 5 months and weighs about 60 lbs. She's eating about 6 cups a day. Although I think that the bag may recommend less, our vet said that when she walks away from her food leaving a few kibbles in the bowl, she's getting enough. Also, you need to feed about 3 times a day until around 9 months. Hope this helps!

I have a new female mastiff puppy born on Sept 27th, 2008. I was wondering if there is any truth to their growth being stunted if fixed too early and when the proper time is to get her fixed as my vet said most get them fixed with their last shots(her last shots as scheduled for the middle of this coming Feb.)
To go with the last answer on this, my vet who has a couple Great Danes said to wait till 1.5 to 2 years to get my male English Mastiff fixed becuase, his head will get very large during that time. So I am not really sure getting them fixed early makes them larger, but if your dog is marking around the house and or starting to become unrully then its time to get him or her fixed.
my male mastiff was also born on sept 27, 08, bought from islands west mastiffs ladysmith. i was just told by my vet that when you neuder or spade it acctually make s them grow bigger. it also stops any chance of them getting ovarian or testicular cancer.

My mastiff is 1 1/2 yrs. old. She is not gaining weight. We brought her to the vet and they suggested to give her a little more treats during the day. Still nothing...any suggestions?
The best ting to do is reserch dog foods. You need to feed her food WITHOUT CORN. Nothing from Wal-mart! You'll see what I mean. We feed Canida. But their are many GOOD food out their.
I have a 4 month old English Mastiff & she is 60 lbs. I feed her 1 & 1/2 cups 4 times a day as the breeder told me. I have her on Iams puppy giant breed. She loves it and is really growing. At this rate, the vet thinks she will be more around 200-220
I raise mastiffs and have a female that Ive had on basically every kind of Dog food available. She still does not gain enough weight and looks like i dont feed her. She is very energetic and holds a more athletic build. Some dogs dont have the bulkyness and thickness as other mastiffs have due to breeding. I have found that by feeding them dog food with eggs and alittle RAW (not cooked) meat like chicken or any meat from your grocery puts weight on them and keeps their coat shinny. Its perfectly healthy to feed a raw meat diet but tr to keep dog food for them as well. Just be sure your not over feeding the meat part. I hope this helps!
My sister was actually having the same problem with her male mastiff. We found that it is better to feed her animal Lard. Don't get that mixed up with Vegetable grease they use to fry foods though, that doesn't help. Also look at her diet and figue how much engergy is in that and raise the energy if possible slightly more. Recap, Animal lard and higher energy foods

at what age could a female mastiff become pregnant?

We have a 9 month old nuetered male mastiff. He is very energetic. He acts more like a lab puppy than a mastiff. At what age to mastiff puppies mellow out or become lazy?
the mastiff breed really doesn't mellow out until they reach full maturaty. which is at 24 months plus a little time depending on the dog. mine just hit 2 years and he is calming down fairly quickly.

My wife wants to get a Mastiff and I would like to get a Husky. Would this be a problem to get both? And if I would get both which should I get first or does it not matter?
I do not usually resond to these things, but I was in a very similar situation. I wanted a mastiff but my husband thought it would be too big. We ended up with huskies because my husband thought they were cool dogs. We did research the breed but after personal experience, I have found that not all of the research provided a true representation of what you will get with a husky, hence my response. I now have two adult huskies and an English Mastiff puppy. Really research the breeds because they are VERY different. The huskies need a lot of exercise and the mastiff needs a lot of sleep. : ) Huskies are truly excape artists so you need to consider yard containment. We tried the invisible fence (the real brand, not a knock off) and the huskies ran through the highest setting after months of training. They are stubborn and want nothing more than to run. The mastiff puppy stays in the yard without any containment. A four foot fence will likely be ineffective with a husky because they can jump it, so a six foot fence is a must. However, they will dig under it. They will also dig holes everywhere in your yard. They are more challenging to potty train than a mastiff, at least in my experience. My mastiff puppy was fully potty trained and able to hold it through a full work day at 13 weeks. My huskies took quite a bit longer. Don't get me wrong, I love huskies, but you really need to know what you are getting. Huskies will be destructive when left alone. I would not recommend getting one husky by itself because they get bored quickly, so you will want more than one dog, whatever they may be. My dogs all play well together but they have very different needs. Lastly, you need to know that huskies produce a LOT of fur. They experience the typical two major sheddings per year, but they really do shed constantly. Be prepared for regular trips to the groomer if you are not prepared to do weekly baths and brushings. Buy a Furminator. We have hard wood floors and have to vacuum daily in order to keep the fur under control. Your mastiff will need to be groomed but it won't need nearly as much. Huskies and mastiffs are both great dogs but their needs are very different. If you want a laid back dog, do not get the husky. My oldest is almost four and still acts like a puppy. My mastiff puppy already seems like an adult. Best of luck with your dog endeavors!
I think that is a good idea to get both, however you should reasurch each breed before you get them, although the husky may have more energy than the mastiff. I have a mastiff and a whimerwiner and they love playing together.

My English Mastiff that we saved is 1 year old and weighs 116 pounds, is that good. He's gained 20 in like 2 months. I am feeding him 10 cups a day but I'm not sure if that's enough or too much. What is the norm?
5 1/2 - 6 1/4 cups 100 -120 pounds(good dog food (nutro)
As long as you can feel his last 2-3 ribs under his skind he is fine. If you see more ribs while he is just walking around, he is underweight. If you do not see 2-3 ribs when he moves he is overweight. My English mastiff is almost 1 yrs. old and weighs 150 lbs. he is in perfect condition and I feed him 8 cups of food a day split morn and night (CANIDAE ALS). If you feed him a quality food than you will not have to feed him as much (more vitamins ans supplements).

hi there i have a gorgeous 12 week old little boy english mastiff puppy well not so little i am slightly worried about his colour as i dont know the difference between the colours they should be when we got him at 7 weeks old he was quite light coloured with all his markings in the right places now at 12 weeks he seems to be getting darker like a caramel colour(paler than the tan on a rotti) and we dont know if this is normal as this is the first mastiff we have owned never the less he is an outstanding puppy and we love him dearly but but we just want to know is this normal thanks.x
I don't think it is a problem, my mastiff got a little darker as he got older, he is fawn, Unless you are wanting a show dog i really dont think that the darkening of colors matter that much

Im looking into adopting an English Mastiff who is 21 months old and only 165lbs. Do you think this dog will fill out more? About how much more weight do you think he might gain?
Ours was fully grown at about 2 years old but he filled out until he was 3. He probably put on an additional 20 pounds as he got more massive and thick. They are the best dogs.
My male Mastiff reached his mean weight of 170lbs at about 18 months, he will be 4yrs in july. He is in perfect height/weight proportion and is still quite active and playful. I am hoping this may be a blessing in disguise, perhaps extending his life span a year or two
Most large breed dogs reach their top height by 18 months of age. They don't normally put on the weight they will be until 3 years of age.

We are talking to a breeder now and are getting ready to get our first mastiff(s). We have had greyhounds and great danes in the past and always at least 2. I would like to get two masiff puppies (one for each of my sons and so that the dogs have companions in addition to our family). But, it appears that most people that discuss getting mastiffs only get one. Is two at the same time too much?
I only have one, but would love to get another, My advice would be to get one to start- train it and then bring in another- training two dogs at once could be a handful (even though they are very easy to train, they are extremely smart)
I have 2 mastiffs, we have brindle male that is actually going to be 11yrs old this Thanksgiving, and wow what a wonderful dog he has been. We also just added a fawn female to our family now. We got her in Feb, and i can tell you that i LOVE having 2 of these wonderful animals!!! I will always have 2, the saying is, that mastiffs are like potato chips you cant just have one!!! You just might want to get one for now, and then once the housebreaking and some training are put into place then add another, that way you wont be so overwhelmed. These wonderful dogs need to have alot of attention, and an strong handler!!! Good luck with your babies, and i am sure you will fall in love with this breed!!!
The comment I heard before a Mastiff " you don't own a Mastiff, they own you" a year later rings very true. Our Mastiffs (4 of them from almost a year to 4 years) Demand, and yes I mean demand attention, and they get. They are the most loveable, friendly, just want to be with you dog I have ever in my life been around. We have invited friends to meet the adults before getting one of their own. The pup will honestly walk up to you and sit on your feet and lean on you to get attention, they think they are lap dogs. And another saying is, a bored mastiff is a destructive mastiff, and this is oh so true............. Our Mastiffs are strictly outside dogs, the females, even full litter mates, are more aggresive towards each other, in fact we can not keep two of them together. The oldest female does not deal well with either of the two girls. Our male has the same attitude as two of the females, very laid back, excellent temperment, any one can do anything to them. Mine do not like cats, Love people and can be lead anywhere by a very young child, even with out a leash. They are very smart and learn very quickly. I think it is all in what they are raised with from day one and how they are treated, But the do DEMAND lots of attention, every day. They want you. Mine would also help a thief load up the car, and then growl as they are leaving!
I bought one then a tear later bought another and even thinking about a third. great dogs! You need lots of sofa room.beware of knee injuries though like a torn ACL my male had two $3,200 surgeries.Glad he only has two knees
I currently have a 7.5 month old male English Mastiff pup who is nearing 125 lbs. My father accompanied me to pick the pup out when he was 4 weeks old, and fell in love with one of the other pups. We ended up getting 2 at the same time, and while we don’t live together, the weekends that I visit my parents are extremely busy. Mastiff pups require a great deal of attention! And don’t be taken in by descriptions of Mastiffs being lazy. Mastiff pups are still definitely puppies. They tend to sleep quite a lot, but when they are active, they are very active! The two pups most definitely entertain each other quite a bit, but when you have two 120 lb pups entertaining each other in the living room, the space gets smaller rather quickly. I would probably recommend staggering your pups by 8-10 months if at all possible.
I have only one but I can tell you that the way to get the maximum potential out of your mastiff is to make him a part of the family. They are extremely affectionate in an almost 'human' way (if I'm sitting on the sofa, Gabriel will place his elbows on my shoulders, lays his head next to mine and press his chest against mine, this is his 'hug'!) another dog does not take the place of their humans--the relationships are very different (the humans must always be the 'Alphas'). So please, no matter how many dogs you get, never let them think for a moment that they aren't the most important dogs in your life, with all the love and attention of a cherished family member, after all, this is what makes their lives complete. This is true for all dogs but especially the giant breeds--we are blessed with precious little time to care for them!
I currently have 2 mastiff's - my male is 3 yrs and my female is 1 1/2 - they are great together and help keep each other amused BUT they both require lots of human attention so I spend lots of time with a hand on each dog giving them a scratch - can't scratch one without the otherAlthough it is a fair amount of work for 2 - they are wonderful dogs and I wouldn't give either one up.
we have 2 mastiff sisters...aquired only 6 days apart. we have no regrets!!!! we do not show these dogs...just love them to death!!! they have brought us much joy. as a matter of fact we are seriously considering getting one more!!! they have 13 brothers and sisters that will be ready in mid-june...thinking of a boy this time. my hubby would like to have 2 more!!!
Yes 2 mastiff puppies at once is alot to handle. I'm speaking from experience on this. Mastiff puppies need alot of one on one. When there is more than one they tend to focus on each other instead of on their human family which makes training harder. If you do want more than one I would suggest waiting until the first one is at least 6-8 months old or older before adding another one to the family.
From my experience, my ONE Mastiff takes a great deal of attention. He is a part of the family and would rather be with us than my poodle. They are famiy dogs.
I can't truly tell you what it is like to have 2 mastiffs. I only have 1 (5 months old) and another dog thats about 100 pounds. I would love to have 2 of them though. She is so sweet and one of the best dogs I have had. Just don't expect much of a pretty yard.

My family is looking into a 4 year old female English Mastiff, her current family is leaving the country. The only downfall is that she has NOT been house trained. Will is be hard to train her since she's 4 years old?
Mastiffs are very willing to please their people. She will no doubt have seperation anxiety from being seperated from her current family, but w/ alot of love and praise I would bet that she will housebreak. Not saying it will be easy, but it can be done. If you do bring her into your family just be patient. Don't make her ashamed of messing in the house(mastiffs are extremely sensitive) just show her what you do want her to do.

I have an amazing 8.5 month English Mastiff. At what age does a female go into heat?
My females all started coming in around 11 months of age. DON'T breed her yet! She is still growing and is just a baby herself. Wait till she is at least 20 months before breeding her.
Post Response
I weighed my 4 month old female mastiff yesterday (18 weeks) and she is 70 pounds already. From different things that I read she is keeping up with male mastiffs weights. Does this indicate that she will be a very large female or is this a normal weight. one week ago she was 59 pounds. She isn't overeating and she is not chubby.
That does sound like a huge jump in weight, but it's no indication she will mature as large as a male. Some lines grow quickly then stop at 1.5 yrs and some grow more slowly over a longer period of time. Try to curb these growth spurts by not feeding a food that has more than 24% protein and 14 to 15% fat. Most puppy foods even large breed puppy foods are way too high in protein which causes growth spurts. I like Eagle Pack Large Breed Puppy.

I have a 9 wk old Black / Tan Mastiff both parents were Apricot has anyone else ever had this happen? She is beautifully marked though (And today she weighed in at 17.5lbs)
Black and Tan as in a brindle or Black and Tan like a Rottie or Pincher. If it is the second one I would guess the female found a new lover.

I have a soon to be 5 year old brindle english mastiff female. She is wonderful of course but i am having a terrible time with her shedding. My previous mastiff shed a small amount but she is constantly shedding. Any suggestions? Possibly change her food? I feed her Pedigree which she has been on since she was a pup. I use a moisturizing dog shampoo for her coat and skin but nothing seems to help. I would appreciate any and all ideas/suggestions. thanks, Krissy
I would suggest changeing her food. Pedigree doesn't have enough fat for a mastiff. I like Eagle Pack original formula for a mastiff of her age. Also if you're feeding a good food you should not have to add any supplements other than joint supplements.
You proably need to either change her diet to one that has the omega3 supplements in it or get the supplement from you Vet to add to her current diet you may also want to try shed stop it also works pretty good the only thing else I can think of is by it being winter and the type of heat you are using is drying out her skin and making her coat shed more

My female mastiff is almost 7 months old and weighs about 80lbs. Is she going to be smaller?
I have a 9 month old 100 lb female. She is on the smaller side and seems to be about 20lbs or so behind on the typical growth charts for Mastiffs. She was rescused from a bad puppy mill situation when she was 11 weeks. I believe the bad start in life slowed her growth down but she is catching up rather well.
Some lines grow more quickly than others. At her age there is no way to tell what she will mature at. Ask her breeder if she is from a quick or slow growing line.
It is hard to tell, but that seems small. I have a 4 month old female that is 70 pounds

I have a 12 week old brindle female, however, there is a small white patch on two toes of both her hind paws. Is this a major fault?
I have a 3 1/2 yr old Fawn Mastiff and he has one half white toenail but no white fur patches. I've heard from other people - not having had Mastiffs - that he could be a cross breed. It sounds like it might be normal from the others that have posted. Glad I found this sit and thanks for asking the question!
my boy is brindle and also has a white patch on his right hind paw, thanx for asking this question, his pad on his toe is also white.
No it's not a major fault. Not all, but alot of brindles have white patches. Where you describe the white patches and w/ her age her white patches may fade as she matures. I have a brindle girl and she had white on her feet and a white toenail, but now as a 5 y/o they are gone.

How much should my 5 month old english matiff weigh?
You shouldn't worry. If you can clearly see his ribs, feed more food. If you have a hard time feeling his ribs, cut back. You should be able feel them with relative ease, but not see them. He is still very much a puppy and will be lanky until he finishes growing and filling out at 3 years.
I have a 61/2 month old that is weighing 110

My 1.5 YO Female Mastiff. Lola, is very dog aggressive, to the point that I have to pull her off of other dogs, and as she is VERY large, this is getting harder all the time. These other dogs belong to us; they were here before she was! We acquired her from a private breeder at 4 months of age. She seems to be worst with two of our other dogs, both of whom are very submissive and gentle. If she even catches sight of them she will bolt for them and jump on top of them. Funny thing, she doesn't actually draw blood, or seem to harm them. The only real injury was when I pulled her off once and she was being particulary stubborn; when I pulled up she did not release her grip on the other's throat and caused a small puncture. Do I have to have her put down? Except for this, she is great. No aggression whatsover to children, adults, strangers, (just the occasional stray cat, but mostly she just holds them and drools). Please help!
Please, please, please do not put the dog down. Get her professionally trained. She is not to old to be retrained, you can correct this behavior. They are the best dogs but need a very strong trainer/handler, if you are unable to do it yourself please seek outside help. How can you put a dog down for doing something that they don't know is wrong.
Seek help from a professional trainer ASAP! It's not too late to change this behavior, but it sounds like she's getting out of control.
I had the same problem with my Mastiff Cleo. We got her when she was 5 months old. Shes great with people and kids. She loves attention and is overly friendly at times. We also have 3 other dogs who were here before she was. About 4 months ago she badly attackedour 1 year old Doberman so we kept the Doberman in a separate enclosure to Cleo. Then 2months later she did the same thing to our boxer who is now kept with our Doberman. We think she was on heat when she attacked our boxer but the vet said that sometimes they can becomevery dominant and since we have four females all living together we should keep two and two together so now Cleo is enclosed with our Dalmatianand our boxer and Doberman are together as well and since then we have had no more fights. This way they wont fight because is will be one on one!Hope this helps but theres definitely no need to put her down. Theres always away around a problem. Good luck.

at what age should my mastiff stop growing in height.......his parents were very tall and he is 12 months and 28 3/4 inch tall, he weights about 150-175 lbs..........what should he weigh at this stage......
My boy was 32 inches at 12 months old. He is now 21 months old and 34 inches tall.
Most mastiffs stop growing in height around 2 y/o, but I had a female that grew taller until around 4 y/o
Your mastiff will continue to grow until he is 3 years. He has most likely reached his full height, but will now fill out. If you can clearly see his ribs, feed more food. If you have a hard time feeling his ribs, cut back. You should be able feel them with relative ease, but not see them. His weight should be relative to his height.

My Male Mastiff is 165lbs at 10 months how much longer do you think he will continue to grow
He could continue to grow until 3 y/o or older.
A good sort of indication of a mastiff reaching the end of their peak growth rate is when their chest begins to protrude.

My 10 week male mastiff is "fluffy" and I was told he was brindle. However, there is no evidence of stripes, and he has become lighter. He has a full black mask, the undercoat is fawn with black tips. He has lost some of the fluffieness on his back. He and his sister were the only two in the litter to look this way. The others were fawn and apricot. Is this normal? Will he develope a brindle coat or turn fawn? What is silver? Help! I'm a new mastiff owner and my vet is stumped!
My mastiff is "silver" and black. The silver in the mastiff breed just means that it's lighter than the fawn. We know a couple from training that had a fawn and ours was much lighter. Most of his litter mates were fawn, there were only 2 that were silver. We got him at 8 weeks, and he was kind of fluffy with puppy hair...he is 9 months now and still soft and fluffy in spots, but mostly puppy hair is gone.
Silver is like a dark blue, almost black. The coat should turn fawn or brindle by the time he is a few months old. I'm sure. Trust me. This could happen. It's perfectly normal.

My 5 month old Mastiff gets along well with my poodle but when on a leash at the pet store seems to become aggressive toward other dogs, raise his hair on neck. We have friends that bring their dogs over and he plays fine, is this because of the lease, I have heard dogs can be more aggressive on a leash due to the extention of their owner.
(cont)object when told he's taken charge and will make any decisions he wants to until you take control and he sees you as a leader or in a dominant position. All dogs will see us in one of two positions, a leader or a follower. I own a bullmastiff and rottweiler. I control what actions they take and when they take them. consider reading two books, "cesars way" and "being a pack leader." these books will assist you in understanding your dog and it explains how leadership is so important to a dog.
Its sounds like you dog is showing some signs of dominance. if your dog pulls you while on the leash, if he's the first one out the door, doesn't stop barking when told or drop any objec
You dog may be nervous of strange dogs and many dogs feel the best defence is a good offence . in other ways if I act this way they will stay away . correct this behaviour , make him sit at heal when strange dogs are around and correct him if he barks etc. you need obedience classes for him he will get used to behaving around strange dogs at classes.

How much should they weigh around 7 -8 months?
my 7 month old male weighs 127 as of 2 days ago at the vet he had ear infection.
75-100lbs depending on her breed line. Some dogs are the exception and weigh less.

How much should my 3 month old female mastiff weigh?
I NEVER Go by weight on a pup. Look at the Bone structure, that will not change. My male is 239 pounds the mother 170 my pups usually weigh between 24-30 pounds at 8 wks old when they leave but I tell folks that 24 pound will be BIGGER sometimes than the 30 pound now due to bone size and I am usually right!
Our little guy is three months and 40 pounds. Weight can vary with lineage and size of parents, so a better way to tell is to make sure you can see the last few ribs when looking at her from the size, but you should not be able to see backbone or pelvic bone. Good lucxk with your little one!
I will have you know at 9 weeks mines was 21lbs and then I tokk her to the vet not even 3 weeks later and she was 31lbs and guess what the vet said she was underweight...so she said to give her something in her dry food like introduce her to can food or I can start her on some liver mixed with her food
There is no correct weight for an age. Her weight is perfect if she has good body condition.
I would think around 20-25lbs. If your worried about her not being big, it's probably still to early to tell. A good comparision age is around 7- 10 months.
