Hi we just got an 8 week old mini shnauzer. She is biting our little daughter what is the best way to stop her from doing this?

What color does the buff colored schnauzer turn into and at what age does it change?

My friend's mini schnauzer just gave birth to 4 puppies (pure breeds, 12 days ago) and he's giving me one. I know it's recommended to wait until 8 weeks to adopt, but is it really bad if we take him home at 7 weeks?

Why does this type of breed have a long beard under there chin?

I have a 4 yr. old salt and pepper, female mini-Schnauzer, and the light color of her coat has always been a pretty color, until recently. All four feet and around her mouth have started turning a redish brown color, and it's not dirt. Is there something causing this, and is there anything I can do about it?

It's a type of yeast, from getting the paws and face wet. Try to dry the face and feet more thoroughly, and it is safe to wash face and feet with witch hazel, to kill the yeast

My Miniature Schnauzer is 4 months old and he is already 12 inches at the shoulder. How much more do you think he will grow?

We have two miniature schnauzers who are 7 months old. When should they have their first clip??

I have a male miniature Schnauzer that is nearly a year old. I read in a book that it is recommended to castrate a miniature Schnauzer particularly for health reasons. Unless the testosterence level is reduced by catrating, the the prostate gland usually enlarges gradually as the dog ages. This can become uncomfortable for the dog once he reached senior status. Is the risk of this high? I would prefer not to castrate him but do not want him to suffer as he ages. Thoughts?

At what age should you first groom your Miniture Schnauzer?

I have a salt and pepper that is 13 weeks old and we have groomed her twice already. We groomed her the day we got her at 5 1/2 weeks old and we groomed her just last week. She doesn't particularly like it but we are trying to get her used to it. We groomed her at 5 1/2 weeks old because she had fleas and we were trying to get rid of them and it was a little bit harder to do that with more hair.

I have a miniature schnauzer, she is 1 year old, suddenly yesterday she started to have difficulty in barking, well i took her to the clinic but the vet said she is fine.
i worried of her, ist common for a miniature schnauzer to have problem with barking?

I have a 5 year old cat and now I want to get a miniature schnauzer. Can anyone tell me what should I do to make them be friends from the beginning? Also, I am pregnant and I'm worried about how will the dog react to the new born baby?

I had to respond to your questions about having a cat and getting a mini-schnauz. We had our cat first. She was about 5 when we got Jack. From the very beginning Sally, the cat, has not cared much for Jack and Jack chases her. However, the other day, when we came home, we discovered something quite interesting. We have a sliding glass door and we sort of snuck up on the two of them sleeping on the mat beside the door together. As soon as they heard us, both heads popped up and it was like "Oh my gosh! We're caught liking each other! Quick, run and I'll chase you so they don't know the truth!" It's funny that only when we're watching does Jack chase her out of the rooml. We are going to really add to the excitment this weekend when we add another mini-schnauz to the mix. GLuttens for punishment-that's what I'd say we are!

I have two minis (Jackson and Dixie) and a 2yr.old grandson. We had the dogs before the grandchild and they have been wonderful with him! Jackson is very protective of Trey and Trey has given kisses and treats to the dogs since before he could walk. When Trey was very small and sleeping at my house, Jackson would go into the bedroom and check on him repeatedly. When Dixie had puppies, she never had a problem with Trey coming close and looking or even holding her babies.

My little Maggie (who is a min. schnauzer) Does great with my cat whose name is Mumbo. they are best friends. If i bring maggie to work with me the cat is only getting a break but Maggie lays around sad because she has no one to play with. They have made a great connection and I have not had any problems. It's like the cat is a great babysitter for maggie! if you have any questions email me at funny_girlbennett@yahoo.com

I have read that mini schnauzers are bad for barking. I live in an apartment so I am worried about it barking when I am not there. Can anyone tell me if the barking will be a problem? Can this be helped with training or socialization?

For the lady that got the Schnauzer for protection. About the alpha situation - you have to assert yourself and not let him rule. I made that mistake with my last dog- a Jack Russell Terrier - he had an attitude from hell. he ended up mauling me severely and I had to have him put down after 3 years of having him in my life. This 1 1/2 year old Schnauzer I have now has on occasion tried to rule me. He has growled when I try to correct him, even snipped at me. YOU MUST STAND YOUR GROUND WITH HIM/ HER - SPANK - DISCIPLINE - AND BY SPANK I DON'T MEAN - BEAT HIM. They learn extremely easily. It only takes 2 fingers smacking the rump and eye to eye contact while you are telling them NO, and DO NOT LOOK AWAY FROM HIM - HE MUST BE THE FIRST TO LOOK AWAY OR HE WINS. I watch Caesar Milan constantly and he can really help you learn how to make you pet the ideal pet. These pets we love so dearly and think of as family - mine to me is like a son -- but they have to have their boundaries set and know who is in charge. I am not going to make the mistake again and have to lose something I love so dearly just because I gave in and let him rule. They have to know their place to be happy. May you and your baby be as happy as mine and I are.

I have had my mini since he was 7 weeks old and he is now 1 year old. the only time my dog ever barks is when you get him really excited. when he was younger i just trained him not to bark by telling him no everytime he barked and not giving in one bit to hi barking and now he doesnt bark. that technique can be used on training the dog to do anything

I recently purchased a Mini Schnauzer for the purpose of being a watch dog. He is 4 months old and only barks when someone passes by my apartment (sliding glass doors) outside. I praise him for this because I live alone, and I want him to be protective of me. He is not territorial but loves everyone and has great socialization with the other dogs in the complex. He is quiet during the day while I am at work and has a great disposition. He does try to be the Alpha dog with me when we go for walks and I do need to assert my authority over him. If he tries to 'walk me' I pull him back with his leash and shorten his lead so that he can only walk beside me and not in front of me. He is a wonderful puppy and I'm glad I purchased him.

I am a professional groomer and I have had my miniature schnauzer since a puppy (12 weeks old) and he is now almost 4 years old. He barks for an extended time when people arrive and then will intermittently bark every time our guest moves. I put him in the bedroom when people come over initially until he calms down. He will bark everytime someone next door closes a car door or the garbage man comes. It can be annoying but it is not constant. He is mostly quiet when we are not home but was very noisy as a puppy crate training. When picking out a puppy I went for the least active of the bunch and I am glad I did because he is better natured than alot of the schnauzers I have worked with.

My miniature schnauzer puppy is almost 4 months old, and one day last week his ears went from being floopy to standing straight up all the time. What causes this to happen? Will they ever go back to being flopped over?

Do white mini schnauzers shed more than the others?

Of course not! No matter what color it is a schauzer is a schauzer and they will al shed at about the same rate

No, they all shed about the same.

My sister is thinking about getting a mini schnauzer.. Do they shed?

No they don't shed at all

I have a miniature schnauzer, and he does shed a tiny tiny bit - I have a black lab too and as a comparison, I'd say the schnauzer sheds 0.5 out of 10.

No, they don't shed and are great dogs for people who are allergic to dogs.

I have a white mini and He's 2 1/2 months old and so far he has not shed 2nd hair cut today!!

Only as a puppy

My schnauzer weighs around 6kg(12 pounds) and according to the groomers it is overweight. How do i keep it fit? Because I can't take it for walks in the neighborhood as there are many strays there.

My Mini Schnauzer is 7 months old and weighs 18 lbs. I just follow the reccomended food amount on the bag, and one short walk a day(If we can get that in). playing around the house is usually sufficiant, and he is healthy.

My Breeder who also shows maintains all are individuals, They should look right but have a waist line. Mine weighs 11kilos at 8.5 months and is fit and healthy. We in England let them carry more weight then America.

What is the ideal weight for a mini Schnauzer at 9 1/2 weeks? I dont want to over feed him but thnen again i dont want to give him too little food either.

I adopted my schnauzers eight months apart as puppies from a breeder. With both pups I basically free fed them (let them eat till they were full) three times a day and gradually went down to two small meals a day as adults. I always made sure there was a supply of fresh water available all the time in their puppy boxes.

I have a 11 month old mini schnauzer is a boy. He is throwing up after he eats and is not keeping anything down. Do you know what could be causing this?

my mini has basically acid reflux. Try feeding him smaller feedings more frequently, and maybe add some pureed pumpkin to his diet for addtional fiber.

He could have pancreatitis. That's what my miniature schnauzer. It would be wise to take him to the vet to make sure if it's not somehting serious.
There ay also be something wrong or bad with that perticular bag of food. Can bags of food go bad? That may be the cause.
Hope I helped!

I started my mini on Hills Science Plan food and he had diarrhia and vomiting . I changed his food to Royal Canin and this food seems to suit him better . However pups find all sorts of things when they are out playing in the garden and our pup at six months still gets sick sometimes .
My vet says that puppys get tummy bugs just like a child.
Hope this helps.

I have two mini's and feed them science diet. We put water in with it so the dog can't just gulp down the food. They are now four years old and we still put water in the food. Just enough to moisten it and then a little more.

Mine did this for awhile. I changed his diet from the cheaper, fattier type food to a better brand and have had very few incidents of throwing up since.

I have (2) mini schnnauzers and I want to be sure that they are truely 'mini'. At what age are they full grown and what should their height and weight be at that time.

They have a lifespan of about 15 years. Their size is from 12-14 inches and their weight is 10-15 pounds.

I have two questions. First, Im scared to let my mini schnauzer outside because when he return inside he smells really loud and bad. I tried everthing to control this issue. Is there anything I havent tried? Second, when I do let him out I never like to listen to me when I call him and end up chasing him. This has put an end to our outdoor trip. What I can do to get him to listen to me when we are out? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I never let my schnauzer out side with out being on a leash, either me holding the leash or tied up to the yard stake for her to run around. As far as the smell, not sure what u r talking about there. just wipe him/her down w/ a baby wipe or something till u give it a bath. can't bathe them every day of course.

can some one tell me about how many Miniature Schnauzers there are in the world? My son is doing a project on this and needs to know how many there are.

I would say to contact the Canadian or American Kennel Clubs and see how many are registered. You'll never know how many there are worldwide!

Aprroximately 19.

Do they do well with cats?

My Mini Schnauzer Bailey decided to test one of my clawless cats early on. The cat was the same size as he was. After his initial attempt at intimidation, the cat simply slapped him a few times just to let him know that that kind of behavior would not be tolerated. They are now the best of buddies. Bailey will even play-chase the neighborhood stray young cats much to their delight. They even stop by and wait for bailey to come outside so they can tease him.

my 4 month old Schnauzer loves to chase my cats. the older cat will tolerate her to a point and then she hisses and says leave me alone. the younger cat will hiss, growl and all kinds of stuff then she chases the cat up the stairs. hopefuly they will all b friends b4 it is over.

How well do these dogs mingle with cats?

our mini schnauzers best buddy is a cat. we have 2 cats. they get along great.

My mini schnauzer has dry, flaky skin and he itches a lot. no fleas but I was wondering if I can feed him something to alleviate this? olive oil or fish oil? anyone try this?

I feed my miniature schnauzer a product called solid gold (holistic diet) get this lamb based food from Pet Edge. I give her treats called Dragonets also a product from Solid Gold. I use shampoo and condioner called Hydr Pearls. Got it from my vet but I'm sure you can order online. Gets rid of all that dry flaky skin. Try the shampoo and conditioner. I even take it to the groomer. No problems now.

Do they mix well with other breeds or are the better off living alone?

my mini schnauzer is fun and very energetic.she is 1 years old.she has had a friend ever since she was born.it makes her more friendly and she has someone to ply with.

i am getting a 17 week old mini schnauzer. is it better to get a younger puppy? is a 17 week old already set in his ways?

One of my schnauzers was also kept in a small cage for the first three months of his life. It took about a month or so for him to come out of his shell. He would shake and stand in one spot for the first month. He is a great dog now. He loves to play and be petted. I wouldn't trade him for anything.
I also have another schnauzer so it helps to have someone for them to play with when I'm not at home.

Our puppy spent his first five months locked in a cage at a puppymill before being rescued. He was with a foster family for three weeks who taught him that people can be loving and affectionate. He was afraid of doorways and you couldn't bend down to pet him without causing him great fear. It took only a few hours of kindness, affection and tenderness and he was playing with toys. He was housebroken in just two weeks (after spending his life in a cage doing his business whenever he wanted) and he loves to learn new tricks.
Don't worry about your puppy being set in his ways. Show him lots of love and attention, praise and petting. He will be eager to please you.

I am soon getting a mini schnauzer and Ive read about them not liking strangers or other dogs.. I had a terrier mix for 16yrs who loved everyone.. what can you do to prevent them from not liking strangers as a young pup?

I am not a trainer, but have a 11 month old mini myself. We started taking her to local dog parks at about 6 month of age and we take her about once a week now. She has been great with other people and dogs this way! Also while on our walks I ask people we see if they mind if she says "hello". I think that gets her used to the fact that most people are friendly - not a threat. Same with dogs on our walks, always asking first, if she can say "hi".

What do you suggest to clean the hair around the mouth of my schnauzer? It seems to have a dirty color and I don't know what product is safe for cleaning.

When is the best time to socialize one, my minu schnauzer/jackrusselterrier is turning one this november and is still very shy and barks at everything,i think because she is scared she doesnt like anyone but my neighbors and my family.she barks at everything how can I stop her,and how can I socialize her best???

I'm not a professional trainer, but the sooner the better on socialization. Some training might comfort yourself and your dog. I have heard that dogs sometimes bark (even when their owner is present) because they do not feel protected by the pack leader. Just an idea.

I have a beautiful 5 year old female. Is she too old to breed? How would I find a mate for her? I want to breed her once and not for profit (just for family and friends). I'm in Missoula, MT.

I'm getting a schnauzer that is a miniature and i was wondering if even though it is a little smaller than the standards require if i can still compete in obedience competitions as a full AKC registered mini?

You bet, you can compete in all AKC events except comformation.
We have several people in Colorado that are competing in all kinds of different events.

I'm getting a mini and i wanted to know if solid white is accepted as a color?

The white miniature schnayzer is recognized in many countries of the world including Germany which is the home country. The American and Canadian miniature schnauzer clubs, in writing their standards, have chosen to consider white as a disqualification. Whites are the same as any other miniature schnauzer except for their color and have no weahnesses and medical problems that are not experienced by other miniature schnauzers. Their exclusion in the U.S is purely arbitrary by the Americal Miniature Schnauzer Club.Hopefully this will soon change.

If you have the AKC papers, then they are recognized as a purebred Miniature Schnauzer by the AKC, the color is just not approved for conformaion class and a white schnauzer is considered a fault. You can however show your dog in Obedience, Agility, Rally or Earth Dog.

I too am getting a white-mini and they are not recognized by the AKC for showing. The only solid color that is accepted is the black.

We have a rescue schnauzer and are unsure if it is a mini or standard. Does anyone know what the general height and weight would be for a mini at 5 months of age? This is a pure breed dog.

The standard for our breed is 12 to 14 inches at the shoulder as an adult. If you breed to the standard a 5 month old pup will usually be over 12 inches at the shoulder. They will contunue to grow until the growth plates close which for the females is usually when they come in to season for the first time. The males will continue to grow in height until they are a little over a year.
Usually they will not grow more than a quarter of an inch taller than they are at 5 months. But sometimes the pup hasn't read the books and grows as much as an inch.

A mini is between 10-12 inches at the shoulder when fully grown. Males being a tad bit larger than the females. At 5 months old your pup would be smaller than this. Fully grown they are anywhere from 14-22 lbs.

Well ask a vet or just let it grow. if it is not two feet tall after about a year and a half it is probably a mini.

is it common in older breeds to develop a cough
