I just lost me beautiful newfie yesterday and it was bery unexpected. She was happy in the morning and then she just didn't look good, I thought she just had an upset stomach because she had foamy saliva and was whining, when I went to take my son to school. I came home to find her dead. My heart is broken. I just don't know what happened to her. I thought she may have had twisted stomach but I don;t think she would go that fast. She had some problems in the past where she would whine on occasion but seemed healthy and there seemed to be no concern to take her to the vet because it would stop as fast as it started. I am looking to you to see if anyone might have an answer for me. I am devastated and miss her so much.

I have a six month old Newfie and he weighs 65 lbs, Is this an average weight for this age?
He is very slim and tall, will he fill out or will he stay on the smaller side?

I have an 8 month old black newfie who is well built so far at 85 lbs. Everything in the growth process has been normal but he suddenly has been chewing on his hind quarters as if he had fleas but doesn't. Our vet says its just dry skin. I have heard of using wheat germ oil. Anyone know of this? Anyone know how much you are to give? Please send help for my little itchy!

I wonder if it's a skin allergy. My newfy was allergic to a particular brand of dog food. My Saint Bernard wasn't but as soon as we switched food to another brand it went away. Several months later we switched back and the itching returned so we knew it was the food.

My 3 year old newfoundland has bone cancer. None of his relatives has this disease. Why does mine have it and is it common for the breed? Thanks for your answer. I will appreciate it.

I have studied this breed for years and bone cancer in animals is much like humans...not one of the most common cancers for this breed.

can the newfoundland coat be cut to keep them cool in hot weather

I know people who do have their newfs shaved in the summer and send the fur to a knitter to have xmas present made like hats and scarves and stuff. I do not do it personally as the fur helps protect there skin from the sun but it is posssible.

I live in a neigborhood and have a 7 year old and an 8 month old newfy. The older one does not need any type of fence as he only meets and greets anyone that passes and never leaves the yard. The 8 month old has the same disposition EXCEPT he will run across the road if someone is walking their dog and my fear is he'll get hit--Fence is not an option in my neighborhood--What are the thoughts of invisible fencing for a newfy ??---I'm afraid it may cause them to be timid or scared as they are so laid back. Thanks

My brother has a pitbull and he has an electric fence. The dog will never go anywhere near the property line.
I have a newf that laughed at the fence. He just walked right through it and looked back when it started shocking him and he sat down like it was a nice massage to his neck.
Now granted he loves to get his neck rubbed.
With the pitbull the fence was turned on 1/2 power. We turned it up to 8 which is audible alarm starts at 6 feet and then the shock increases the closer the dog gets. When the dog passes the fence the shick coninues at max until he returns through it. My dog thought it was nothing more than a cool little toy.
Newfs have a lot of fat around th eneck area. Shock collars and fences react to the muscle. You'd have to tput the collar on to tight to get it to sit at a muscle area. I am only speaking from my experience here as my female does not even need a fence she would rather lie around all day.

We are the proud owner of a male newfie, just recently we were gone. And left him outside to play. We live in city limits, but he does have area to run. He pulled out of his collar and introduced himself to one of the city insepectors. They are determined to deem him a vicous dog. Is the breed vicous at all?

It's just due to there size. I have a male that barks at everything coming down the street and people are scared once they see how big he is. They are protective dogs but will never bite. What I would do if I were you is take your dog to a school and let kids play with him and see him. They are jumpy at pups so you gotta watch that but have him lay down while the kids rub his belly or that. The go to the city and say I just had him in a playground with kids he is in no way viscious. Before doing this take him to a vet and have him checked over, you never know if there is a bad hip or something and maybe the inspector touched it or what have you. A newf uses his size and weight to protect, he will jump up on someone even pull them to the ground but never bite.

my newfie is 8 months only ways 60 lbs and is and stands1 5-17 inches tall .. I am disapointed that my large breed is not turning out to be a large breed buy any means.. Should the breeder assume any responsability for the incredible deviation from the large breed i thought I was buying?

I had one newf that was under weight. I fed him leverything for 2 weeks and he gained 15 pounds. He looked better, alot fuller but it's like a person. If your too skinny you can fatten yourself up but if your healthy and skinny then thats all that matters. PS. I brought the dog back down to his 6 cups 3 times a day and he lost the extra weight and was more playful and active after doing so.

10 Lbs per month for the first year is about average. Did you see the parents ? Less than 120 lbs in a male is unusual and i would not be beyond discussing that with a quailified breeder. These dogs do not come cheaply.....

no some dogs are big , some are small , you know.... like humans !!

I have a 4 month old female landseer and all she wants to do is sleep.. Is this normal and will she always be this lazy. there might be a total of an hour a day that she romps around other than that she sleeps.

Your lucky you got a female. I always recommend a female for a calm house pet. I have yet to have a female who was bouncing like the males. To set your mind at ease though you can have her vet checked.

My male newfie is 25 weeks old today. All ay he is lovely but in the evening he goes crazy, nipping and biting. We say no and have tried ignoring him, yelping and putting him in another room but nothing works. What can we do?

hehehe, wait till he is 52 weeks and still doing the same. The Newf acts like you do. If your very outgoing the dog will be, if your a couch potatoe the dog will be. A newf is always seeking approval and attention until they get too big and really could care less what you think. What you can do is just ignore him even when you are home and he will think you could care less. It sounds mean but if you give him attention only when you want to give him attention he will go off and do other things and not be craving the attention so much when you walk in the door. I have done this with success in training a malmute.

why is my newfie a shrimp? She is 7 months old and does not seem to be growing.. Her parents are both very large and fit the total standard. How ever my girl only weighs 65 lbs definately on the smaller side . I wanted the big breed . Will she start growing soon?

How much should my female Newfie weigh at three months old?

27-32 from my experience

I have a 3 month old Newf puppy who gets really hyper and barks and bites. She only does this for about 1 1/2 hours every evening. The rest of the time she is wonderful. Will she grow out of this and eventually calm down. She's not biting aggresivly as she thinks she's playing, but it still hurts and she is a little slow in learning that it is not acceptable to use her teeth on us?

We're thinking of getting a Newfoundland but I would like to know, if the breeder ask us to have the female fix, do we have to do it? Is it the "law" to do that? Thanks!

When a responsible breeder is selling a pet puppy it is ofen a requirement that the pup be fixed to help stop puppy mills. If the sale contract requires this and you do not fix the puppy the breeder can seize the dog legally back to their care. Any responsible breeder will not sell unless they have a non breeding contract or spay/nuetar contract, as puppy mills are too prevelant and the animals are suffering.

I would like to know, do we need a fence for those kind of dogs? We live on a two acres property, in the country and there's not much around, cows and fields.

Newfoundlanders are easy to train and will patrol your property without benefit of fencing if properly raised. Otherwise anything 6 feet or higher that they can't climb or jump or knock over. I live in the city on a large lot, and when we refenced 3 years ago, my newf patrolled my yard nonstop when the fence was down.

Would a newfoundland be a good pet for a 12 year old boy

100%. Newfs are often reffered to as nanny dogs

I have a very rambuctious 2 year old that loves to rough house .our newfie will just lay there and even thow she towers over our son she is so gentle with him .

Absolutely, they will love each other.I have a 7 mth newfie and 2 children and they get on really well.My newfie tends to play rough at times with my little son but when we are out walking in the forest if my son goes behind a tree and Harvey (newfy) can't see him he just whines until he sees him again. And the reunion is as if they havn't seen each other for days!!

I have a litter of 3 pups at moment, children of all ages are in and out of my home constantly. The pups will be 8 weeks old the last week of February and they adore children. I have had Newfs since my son was 3, and wouldn't hesitate to place with any family. They are naturally protective and the most amazing dogs I have ever owned.

A newfy is the best dog on the planet for children so yes he would make a excellent dog for a 12 year old

Hi I have a 11 month old newfie he isn't a bad dog in anyway he is just alittle hyper at times and when he wants to play you really don't have a choice, will he mellow out? He is about 140 pounds and doesn't know it so when he wants to play he usually just pushes into you until you play with him, if I don't play with him he starts to bark at me and he is showing his teeth at me not growling or anything or being aggressive just showing his teeth, any suggestions would be apriciated.

My male hid around the corner this morning and when I cam outside he took me to the ground from behind, I pushed him off went to go back in to change and the frigger did it again. God its embarrassing when the neighbours are laughing and your suit is full of muddy dog feet. It's just them playing. I call it the blubbering fool stage where they have no common sense and will walk through anything instead of going around it. They do settle over time. The heavier ones are not as active but I always play frisbee with mine and we go hiking etc. so he is not fat by no means and all muscle. My male is 1 yr, 120lbs and can literally do a backflip. At 3 they begin to settle but with this one I dunno.

If the showing of the teeth looks as though he is almost smiling then it is a sign of obedience and desire to please. My two year old Newf does this all the time and its her way of seeking approval. My Newf never realizes quite how big she is. She often mistakes herself for a lap dog. What I have found is they so desperately want to be a part of you life that they will do anything to be close whether it is climbing on you or nudging you to play. You need to make sure he/she understands who is boss by laying ground rules and being strict. I have found my Newf simply ignores who she doesn't respect but listens to who she does. It also seems to correlate with the size of the person but that is not true in all cases.

My newfie puppy is approx. 9/12 months old. Since we purchased him at 3 months old, he really isn't a big eater. He grazes at his food and eats EVO pure meat diet, occasionally thru the day. I don't really know what a almost 10 month old male newfie should weigh, he weighs 90 pounds and seems to be "Slowing down" on the heighth growth. I know he shouldn't be growing too fast, but I am wondering what the average newfie weighs at his age. To me, he looks "Lanky", his father at adulthood was 175 and his mother was 120. I read that they will continue to grow unitl 18 months old, but is that just the filling out? I measured his height yesterday at 25 inches tall.

He's not too far off from the standard. What you can try is changing his diet or adding some soup to his food.

my male nwfie just turned a year old and he is just over 100 pounds. He looks alittle lanky too but i have been told they dont become full grown for 3 years

male newfie should weigh about 130-150 lbs

We whant to breed our dogs, but whanted to know is it best to have them both checked over to make sure they are in good health? And how long does a male usally stay in heat?our dogs are both per breed newfiews. If there is a medical problem with one of our dogs,is it best to end up getting them fixed so there isnt any problems?

I think you should get them fixed. It's really up to you if you want to breed them. Yes you should give them a health check before breeding. A male usually stays in heat for a year. He will be chasing after females during this time so make sure your fence is really secure and that the male newfoundland can't get out of the yard.

We have an approx 7 month old newfie mix and I just wondered if it is common for them to loose their puppy fur? He has lost alot of his beautiful, long, shiny, silky fur. Is this common or should I take him in to the vet or change his dog food?

You should bring it to the vet just to be safe. But it could be due to the mix. Occassionally, a dog will shed. But not this much. He should grow in a new coat as soon as you change his food

I have been researching large breed dogs. I currently have (2) Boxers that I love. All my life I have wanted a Large dog. After much research I feel the Newfoundlander would fit best with our family. My only concern is that we live in TN and our summers are very hot. A much as I would love to have a "newfie" I do not want him/her to be uncomfotable. I do not know of anyone who owns a Newfoundlander in this area, which leads me to believe they may not adapt. My vet seems to think they would be OK, but I need a second opinion.

The thick coat of a newfie protects them from the heat as well as the cold as dogs do not sweat through their skin. Think of it as putting a hot dish in an empty cooler, the cooler will help keep the temperature up in the cooler. I have had newfies off and on for 20 years and do not recommend shaving them unless they are matted. When you shave a them regularly their undercoat crowds out the guard coat and they become fuzzy.

I also live in the state of Tenn. and have three Newfoundlands. They all three live in the house with me.I built an indoor kennel that they stay in while I am at work. All three enjoy the water so we spend a lot of time with "water play". They are a handful..but worth it. a lot of hair, slobber, and always underfoot.

I owned a Newfie (or she owned me) for 7 years. On the advise of my vet, I had her taken to a groomer within the first two weeks in April and then again around July 4th. Both time she had a "Puppy" cut (your groomer will know what to do) This eliminates the "Blown Coat" issue above. But the hair cuts helped her tolerate our hot summers on the farm. As long as the Newfie has shade, or a pond or lake to swim in if she gets her hair cut she will be fine.

It should be fine to own one. As long as you give it lots of shade and don't give it too much exercise and it should be fine. Give it lots of water with ice cubes and make sure it gets lots of swimming time:)

I would like to know if Newfies come all white?

I have an all white Newf. One black spot on her eye.

No...only solid with white patches on feet, tail tip, chest and chin...or landseer not all white...

can a newfoundland puppy have a pure white base coat, if so will he lose this and become all black as he grows

If you mean undercoat as the base coat then yes to a point. My female has a grey undercoat that pretty much brushes out inth summer. Her coat is very very fluffy. There is different types of Newfoudnlands and this is what people for some reason have a hard time accepting. A true Newf like my male has coarser hair and after swimming he shakes and he is dry. This is the breed that we refer to as a true water Newf. These are the dogs that were and still are used on the boats. I live in Newfoundland and raise Newfs so i am knowledgeable of there backgrounds and there differences. Newfs were mixed with St. Bernards long long ago to try to repopulate the St. Bernards by the monks. Any pup that looked at all like a Newf was discarded. From these discards we now have multicolored Newfs (brown, grey and landseers), My female is one of these. They look prettier no doubt as they are fluffier but they tend to hold water more on there coat. I can send you pics if you would like to explain this better.

I am not sure what you mean by "base coat" (the soft underlying hair, perhaps?),but here is my 2-cents-worth. I have never heard of this. I think it is unlikely that such a pup will grow hair that is black through and through. every pup I have ever seen is black from the start. I now have a Landseer (white and black). With Landseers, some small areas that start out white do become black. (You can tell somewhat by the color of the underlying skin whether this will happen or not. The skin under black hair is somewhat bluish and the skin under the white areas is piink.) HOwever, mostly, he looks as he looked at 9 weeks, except for black hair overgrowing his forehead blaze. I would check with your breeder about this. If you did not get your dog from a breeder, I would doubt that it is a purebred Newfoundland, or else you have an interesting mutation.
