how do i litter train my one year old papillon emma

When do they get adult food?

My Papillon is 4 months old and CONSTANTLY sticks her tongue out! Especially when she is running around playing! It is so funny and cute, but my boyfriend and I were wondering why or what causes her to do this?

That must be a papillion thing. My papillion, (her name is Lilly), she always licks us. When she is playing she will sneak attack you and come out of nowhere and start licking your face or any piece of skin that she can get. It's so cute. Even when you pet her and she is relaxing she will still keep licking you. I don't get why she does it either.

my pap is 6 mo old should he be getting his adult coat in now?

not untill they are about 1 year old
my papillon is now 2.

Do papillions shed a lot?

my papillon does not shed that much , its mostly longer hairs , i grew up with golden retreviers , compared to them , shedding is minimal

Yes. I read everywhere that if you brush them daily, they wont, but we dont really have the time for that. We brush our 3 year old once a week, on the weekends, and it seems every week a full bag of hair comes off of her. Great dog, I love her to death and am so thankful to have her, but her hair gets everywhere. Vacuuming is done daily just to keep up with it. If I let it slip and don't vacuum for 3 days, the rugs are covered with her black and white hair.

My baby loves to LICK... I think she believes me and my husband are just one big lollipop. Sometimes I don't mind but when I am trying to sleep and get a tongue in the ear or up the nose it can drive you crazy. Is this normal? How can I control it?

Mine does too, and the vet tells me this is common and a sign of self-soothing. Papillons, I am told, are very oral dogs, they like to chew and play, and lick. As long as care is taken, it shoudln't be an issue.

My papillion is going on 2 years old, but his hair is still not getting long. It's long on his tail and around his face and ears but not on his back and stomach. Will it grow out more as he gets older?

I have a Papillon, Johnny, who will be three in September 09. I have read a lot of literature on the breed and find that although they grow to full height by 1 year, their coat is not it's full length or fullness until it's approaching 3 years old. Johnny is getting full now with just 3 months to his third birthday. He's just a wonderful dog. I have read that they are difficult to potty train, but that was not the case for Johnny. Pap's like to do tricks, we taught him to ring bells tied to a strip of leather from the door to go out. He rings the bells, gets a treat and goes out. Now it's a great game. But he's SERIOUS when he goes over to ring his bells now.

I am thinking it is not going to happen as my pup is the same at two years.

I understand you can actually litter train a Papillon. If I were to get a puppy and raise it with my 3 friendly, well litter trained Maine Coon cats, would it work?

Yes! My 2.5-year-old female pap uses a litter box with dog litter. The breeder litter trains all her dogs, and it made great sense, so we went along with her direction. It was not hard at all. Our pap will go outside also, but when it is cold, raining, or I need to be out for an extended period, she has her box in the corner of her x-pen I keep in my office. She knows what to do, and I never need to rush home or worry about accidents ever.

I have a Pap that is about 1 year old. Do I they have an under coat? Or do they need to have a sweater in the winter??

Pap's don't have an undercoat, and mine HATES wearing clothing of any kind, so I get a bigger sweater in the winter when we go on walks. I really think she would be fine without one though. She does have a snowsuit for when it snows as the balls get caked on the wings on her legs and behind. I would highly recommend getting one if it snows where you live.

My papillon is 4 months old. When should his hair start getting longer? His ears are just getting furry on the backs of them.

your pap will most likely get a good amount of coat. but it depends on the dogs genes. if the mom and dad had long hair then the pup probably will as well

paps start to get their adult coats in around 6-8 months of age. I have a 6 month old male pap who is starting to get his adult coat in now too.

My little pap is about 9 months and im still waiting on his coat also...hes got very furry ears and tail also on his behind his hair is long but other than that we are still waiting...so im curious if anyone has an answer to this also

My Papilion is 10 months old and spends 90% of his time scratching and chewing on himself and he is so obsessed with this chewing that he will even do the same to our legs and arms with his front teeth, as if he were needing to groom us. I have placed him on a diet for allergies and given him baths with a shampoo just for this problem with no luck, Is this just a nervous habit? How can we help him to relax (if it is nervousness)?

My pappy also has issues with salmon! She had diarrhea and vomitting after I tried her on this new treat. Her vet put her on a fiber dry dog food diet only for 3 weeks and I slowly added treats and her old food. As soon as I tried the salmon treats, symptoms began to arise again. I believe food has alot to do with the itching, and I noticed it when she wasn't getting all the treats. No itching, and her eyes didn't run.

My Papillon has the same problem. Her vet recommended giving her 25mg of Benadryl twice a day. I believe my dog is allergic to flea bites and unfortunatley even the Advantage doesn't stop them all. The Benadryl seems to relax her. And the vet also told us to wash all her bedding once a week and vacuum everywhere she sleeps (like under our bed). So far that seems to work. Our dog is 3 years old and this didn't become an issue until this year.

I have found that my 3 year old Pap is "allergic" to dog food with salmon in it. I was trying to give him things high in Omega 3's, but ended up with a very itchy scratchy pooch. I isolated it as being the dog food and switched to something else but now I add a bit of Flax Seed Oil to their food.
Also, another option is to take your dog to the vet and have its Anal Glands cleaned out. This can also cause itching as well as odor. You can do it yourself, but it is not a great job. Much easier to have it done at the vet or some groomers may offer the service as well. When squeezed to be emptied, it should look similar to caviar.
Best of luck.

I work during the day and get home fairly late....is it better to keep the dog in the kennel all day or try and fence him in the bathroom? It is too hot where I live for him to stay outside.

You can crate a dog for no more than four or 5 hours, and come home during lunch to allow it play. If not, then it is best to send the dog to a doggy day care. If you're like me, then teach your dog some in-house etiquette. My dogs are quite civilized so I leave them in the house and they don't tear up the place. It works b/c I think it is best to exercise the dog in the morning before going to work if you can. This will settle them down for a while during the day. Then I come home and exercise them again. You can always put toys in your living room, television on, leave the blinds a little open so he can look out, and shield off the room. This way the dog has room to roam but can't damage anything but again, exercise the dog in the morning, then he'd be too tire and content to care about tearing up anything.
Or you can have someone you trust to come and walk the dog during the day so he doesn't get bored. But your best bet is doggy day care.

My papillon keeps me awake at night barking at noises that I can't even hear. Is there a way to stop him from doing that?

My little lucy barks, when anyone passes the apartment door, when the doorbell rings and even when the phone rings. When I tell her to stop she barks under her breath, she has to have the last word. She has a High pitched LOUD bark which is so annoying. Lucy is eight years old and has been doing this since the day I got her. If anyone knows how to stop it please let me know

Believe it or not, try talking to your dog. Mine is 3 years old and she listens well. When she was a puppy, she even barked when my stomach gurggled! In the beginning, I would sit up and talk to her reassuringly while I petted her. Dogs as we all know, have different barks for different events. When my girl barks like there's no tomorrow, I'll get up with her to see what's going on. Know when it worked best? During the first 4th of July. Since then, she no longer barks at the fireworks.

I am having trouble potty training my papillon who is 6 months old. I have tried everything from puppy pads-which he just eats to rubbing his nose and putting him in his kennell and then taking him outside but he just continues to go on the floor everywhere. My carpet is ruined. He does very well at night though, holds it all night.

Try putting your puppy outside right after he wakes up and right after he eats. When he does go to the bathroom where you want him to, praise him a lot, and maybe give him a bit of cheese or something. Also puppies dont have very big bladders, especially small dogs, so take him out often.

To the person that said their 5 1/2 yr old pap also had a drooping ear. Is it permanent? It's been about 3-4 wks now and his ear is still down. I've ruled out any health problems.

My 6th month old pap has HUGE ears and we thought they were never going to come up . Finally one came up and then they would switch.. one up then one down every once in a while. So then we tried taping. this is when you apply moleskin( a stiff material that is sticky on the back) to the inside of the ear. I have found that a triangle shape works the best on the ear. the moleskin should stay on the ear for about two weeks so it can make the ear stronger and then the ear should come up! my paps finally did ... and gues what now i am showing him in conformation. hope this helped!!!

My pap had a drooping right ear until all his permanent teeth came in - now it is fine. Unless you bought him for a show dog, I wouldn't worry about it - they are wonderful companions and one droopy ear can be enchanting.

my papillion is the same way he is four and he has always had a droppy ear but it does go up when he gets excited

Yes it is. There is a breed of Papillion called Phalen, and their ears are not erect although can be when excited.

We just adopted an 8-year old female that fits all the physical descriptions of the papillion except that she is primarily black. We were told by the "shelter" that she is a papillion, which was per her only owners (who had to leave her due to a move). She does have some small white markings on her tummy and her feet. Does this indicate that she is actually a mixed breed? She does have one erect ear and one ear where 1/4 or less of the top droops over. We don't know a lot about how the previous owners treated her, but she seems very loving and loyal already after only one evening.

She could be a Pomeranian/Papillion mix - I have seen several of those at shelters that were rescued from puppy mills and they were black with white feet and their ears were more pointed (A Pap's should have rounded tips). They look very much like Papillions except they have a thick double coat instead of the silky single coat of the Pap....adult Paps should have an abundant coat that is silky and fine, and is straight and resilient, and it is always a single coat.

Never trust what the shelter says. Probably a Papillion mix.

My male Papillion puppy is around 23 weeks old.Training and kitty container training is both going great. 5 days ago, after sleeping in his crate, I noticed his right ear was drooping. I took him to the Vet, to rule out mites or infection. All was fine, my Vet suggested I cut the hair off around the ear to cut back on the weight, but that isn't helping. Has anyone else had this problem and is it permanent? Is he doomed to have one erect ear and one droopy ear? The breeder has good quality puppies and the parents of mine are champion show dogs.

Our Papillon had droopy ear from birth. Actually it's very endearing and she doesn't seem to suffer any detrimental effects from it.

I have an 8 month old papillon male that has HUGE ears. When he was little, his ears drooped so badly that I really thought they would never stand up. I searched the net and found and article that stated that they could get calcium deficiency during teething that could keep their ears from standing up. The article suggested putting cottage cheese in their food. I started doing this and in a very short time, his ears picked up and they are just perfect now.

When dogs are teething or in heat, their ears can droop but will return upright.

Probably just from sleeping on that side too much. I have the same problem with my 5 1/2 year old female papillon.

how many puppies can they have

My pap came from a litter of SEVEN! No kidding. I have photos of them all nursing. So Cute!

i know here in Norway some paps did have litters of 6,but i thik that is just some too many for that little type of dog..but anyway..up to 6 is possible..

From what I can find, they have 3-5 puppies per litter.

Do some papillons have short hair? I got mine from a shelter who rescued him from a backyard breeder, so he probably is not totally pure, but I am curious if this is normal.

paps can have short hair but most of the time its medium length or long. But it all depends on the dogs genes. so if mom had long hair and dad had long hair then the pap should have long hair. I know this doesn't help much since you don't know what the mom and dad look like though.

pappillions usually dont have short hair. when there younger like 8 weeks old they do have short hair and after a year they get long hair

IT is WRONG to say the Paps don`t have undercoat!!!..mine does, and not little either!..it`s much and takes a lot of grooming to get it nice, but she always looks great! good in the winter thou with extra warm coat..:)

Paps don't have an undercoat - just a top coat. Their coat length is influenced greatly by their overall health and diet as well as how they are groomed (i.e. a slicker brush wreaks havoc on their fine fringe.)

I’ve never known of a Papillion with short hair. If the dog is young, his/her undercoat might have not come in yet. Once the undercoat comes in, his/her hair should look a lot fuller.

How to I get my papillion to stop barking? How do I keep my papillion to stay calm around children and let them pet her?

First make sure she gets plenty of exercise. She might be a bit frustrated if she has too much energy and thus the barking and nervous energy. The reason she is barking and aggressive with children is because she views them as a threat and she feels the
