I have a pug that is almost 9months old. This may be a crazy question but I have recently noticed as of yesterday that her tail is not curled upon her back. I have felt it trying to see if she may have broken it, but it seems fine and she does not whine or cry when its touched, she is still very active and playful, and does not seem sad or depressed. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Should I be worried or concerned?

Not all Pugs tails curl all the time. It is completely normal.

We have two pugs. The one I'm writing about is nearly 11 years old and he has developed some problems with his back and back legs. He is slightly dragging his back right leg and at times his leg is stiff and it's hard for him to get up. I've taken him to our vet and he thinks he has spinal nerve damage. He is now mostly unaware when he needs to use the bathroom and is constantly going in the house now. He has had shots and meds to help his condition but it is something that is not going away. Has anyone else had a problem like this? What did you do? Thanks!

I don't know if this will help but my 10 yr old pug has had alot of problems including an unstable back end. If you don't already give them try giving him Pet-tabs (vitamins) available at your vet. Made a huge diffence in a few of my pug's issues mainly his back end strength

We have a one year old pug. She is mostly house broken. She has not made a mess on the carpet since she was about 6 months old, however she still pees in her crate about once a week, usually at night. How can we teacher her not to do this? Her crate is not too big and we are very regular about meals and when she is let outside. A couple of times she has held it for over 8 hours when no one could come home at lunch to let her out. How can we teacher her not to pee in her crate?!

Any of these might work for you depending on how you want to treat your dog:
1. Try moving it somewhere, where the dog won't find it.
2. Try using a spray repellant, they sell them at any local pet store. (Just spray around the crate and the dog won't like it and will stay away.)
3. If your dog pees on it again, say -Uh Uh- or -no- depending on which training habit you use.
4. You can get dog Pee Pads at any Local store. (Somehow the dogs get attracted to pee there)
5. Ask a vet or pet trainer for advice

My 7 year old pug (Wilson) is suddenly holding his head to the right all the time. The vet said that he has a slight ear infection and a tooth that looks suspicious. She did not prescribe anything for us to do. she said to 'give it a few days' I'm really worried. He is eating and drinking but can not walk straight and always holds his head crooked to the side.......Has anyone experienced this? Please Help!!!!!!!

I have an 8 year old named Cade that just developed the same symptoms, I noticed the head tilt and balance problems and immediatly thought ear infection because of his equilibrium. One vet gave me a topical antibiotic that helped but the problem returned. They finally had to sedate him and perform a deep ear flush, the ear canal on a pug is almost 3 inches deep so your vet really needs to clean as far as possible. Have you noticed an odor? If so ear infections are almost always accompanied by yeast infections. Anyhow Cade is back to his old self. Best of luck to Wilson!

It sounds like Wilson has an inner or middle ear infection. The infection affects their balance and causes a severe head tilt. It can also cause problems with their eyes, it is easily treated with antibiotics. Good Luck!

Maybe his ear itches or hurts, maybe that pose makes it feel less irritated. Have you tried touching it? I don't know what you can do.
I'd wait for what the doctor reccommends

Inteverm ointment can be perscribed by your vet and that would of cleared it up I think they could get it for you online also.

I can't seem to housebrake my pug for anything! Could someone give me some advice, she will pee & sometimes poo on a wee-wee pad but as soon as I take her out. Its like she dries up completely untill we are back in the house!

Be patient. It took me over a year to fully housebreak our pug. Pugs are smart but not inclined to do what you want them to do. I think it just takes time and lots of loving encouragement. A regular routine is very helpful. We take a walk twice a day at the same time every day. She knows now to use that opportunity. She very seldom will pee or poop if she's just out in our yard. You could try walks instead to be sure your pug does eliminate.

I have two Pugs, Donna who is black and Emma who is beige, you as the owner have to be consequent and take the dog out regularly, if you don't then don't blame the dog for fouling in the house. My dogs go out five times a day and do not use the garden as a toilet place, they are not locked up in a crate ( never have been ) after all what's the point of haveing a dog if you are going to lock it up in a crate all day long?
If your dog is fouling inside the house you should take him out every two hours, rain, snow, thunder or sun, take the dog out regularly and praise it when it pees or poos, have a small treat with you when you go out and give to the dog once he's done his job.
Good luck and have fun.

I have 5 pugs and they need a crate. Crate training is the best and only method that works for me and fellow pug owners. The bad side of using a pee pad is that its a square on the floor. So what if you have a rug or clothes on the floor, trust me that they will mistake other items for pee pads. So I would stop using that right away. General rule I use is all people who buy one of my puppies is I give them a nice timer. A digital kitchen timer is best to use or a wind up one. Make a schedule and stick to it. Most times it is the owner who is inconsistent with training and the dog is confused. I recommend that you choose strict feeding times and give them at least 20 minutes to 30 minutes to eat. If they dont eat it all, you take the food away. No if's and's or butt's. I feed mine once in the morning and once at night. THey have a treat at lunch if they are good (which is every day).
When you schedule their feedings and time them you are more likely to figure out their elimination habits. With my new puppies I take them out immediately after eating. If they go pee or poo then they can run free in the house. If they DONT GO outside then We come inside and IMMEDIATELY they are placed into the crate/ Set the timer for 10 to 15 mins and try again.
Keep doing this until they go. Trust me they will get the drift really quick.
So you are taking them out after meals. Now what about the rest of the day you ask... I set the timer for intervals based on age. Little dogs and puppies cannot hold themselves as long as a older dog can.
For puppies I take them outside every 2 hours..Yes its alot but trust me it becomes less and less when they learn.
For my older dogs who are over 2 yrs old I take out after meals, and once every 4 hours. But they usually go out with the puppies so you can do as you like.
Make sure they are exercised at least 30 mins a day. I know that the more exercise they get the less accidents they have indoors. The act of walking as simple as it is makes them naturally want to eliminate. SO this helps to.
Now if you work during the day or cannot commit to the timer, try to hire a neighbor or a dog walker to come let them out.
Im a dog groomer in my home so its a bit easier now for me to stick to the timer as Im home all day and night. I must say I strugled with the timer during my schooling but it paid off as teh neighbor and my family helped me out/
Try that and give it 1 week guarentee that it works.
Also know that the first day or two there will be accidents until they get use to the routine. the timers I get them at walmart and they have a clip on them so you can stick them on your belt loop so you NEVER forget to tkae them outside.
The within a month they will be holding it longer and longer....
Also crate them at night and let them out first thing in the morning. IF they are young pups then you will have to wake up and stick to that 2 hour rule for 24 hours a day until they catch on.
stock up on somthing I love called Natures Miracle Spot and Stain remover for dogs. You can get it in a gallon size for 22 bucks at petco. Its great and works awesome. That will be your miracle with spots from the doggies.
Good luck I promise you it will work as I have helped with alot of bad cases, its just us as the owners we need to get on a schedule and stick to it as far as potty breaks go. Also remember the crate. And never leave free choice feeding when training your dog as this will not allow you to guess when he is going to have to go.
I do leave my water out free choice but my dogs are all trained now.
Once your dogs get good you can start to associate a bell ringing with them going outside. get a jingle bell and tie it to a ribbon or yarn. Wrap it around your doorknob. When you go outside with the dogs, ring it. When they are trained they will actually go to the door and bump the bell with their noses. Its so cute because sometimes they wiggle their bummies as if they were saying "hurry mommy I really got to pee"
I hope this helps

My pug has a very pronounced fold which gets sweaty easily. She fights with me terribly when I try to clean it, I'm afraid I may poke her in her eye or something as she squirms around. She gets irritation in her fold to the point of itching and odor. How do I get her to alow me to keep her fold clean without a fight?

My Pug Donna also has a very pronounced fold on her nose and was fighting terribly when I wanted to clean it. I persisted with short attempts and now find that when I pull the skin back with my left thumb I can easily clean under the fold with a dampened tissue with my right hand, she knows that she'll get a tasty treat if she remains quiet, usually a slice of chicken or duck breast ( just a small taste ) and over time she has got used to me cleaning the fold that she doesnt fight any more

I have two adorable pug puppies, now 16 weeks old. The black one is typical pug shaped, with a well-rounded barrel shaped chest. The fawn one seems to have a slightly shortened rib cage that is straight on the bottom instead of curved up toward the dog's body. He is healthy and happy but mom worries that the end of his rib cage seems to jut out of his chest into a hard knot. The vet doesn't seem worried (particularly since I don't plan to show or breed them) but I was wondering if anyone else with a pug had ever seen this and if so, if it is something I need to have a specialist look at.

My female Pug is almost two years old and not fixed. She has been spinning around on her rump like she is itching, what's up with this? She has just ended her second cycle, would this have anything to do with it? I feel sorry for her cause she can't reach there like other dogs can. What can I do to help her?

Actually, all breeds of dog have anal sacs that can become inflamed if not emptied properly, with the universal symptom being "scooting". Its actually easier to empty on pugs that in some other breeds (IMHO). It usually happens with my pugs when they do not have solid stools and I suspect that a firmer stool more effectively eliminates the fluid in the gland. To empty it, it is helpful if you are not squemish, as it is a process that smells extremely bad. What I do is put my dog in the place where I bathe him and have my husband hold the front end of him. I know this sounds gross, but I then genly squeeze his anus until the gross nasty liquid is released. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 attempts. As it reeks, I ususally then bathe him to wash the nasty stuff off. Incidentally, when my dogs' anal sacs are irritated, the also don't smell particularly good. Even when they are not "scooting", that distinctive smell indicates that they need to have their anal sac emptied.

I too have a female pug she does the sme thing. every dog has two sacks on both sides of the ance this is filled with a liquid that helps then go to the bathroom. sometimes when they have a bowel movement the two sacks can become inflamed or swollen some people squeeze the dacks to relieve the pressure. You can have your vet teach you this process or you can just let her rub on your carpet. What ever your pug will do what she does to feel better.

Hi, my partner and I are dying for a pug! But the problem is we work full time and are gone for about 11 hours a day. I have read that if you work full time, a pug is probably not best for you. Is this true? we are home every week night and all weekends..

My pug puppy is lazy. I know...hard to believe...but she is, actually depressed seems more like the verb. She's excited for less then a minute when I get home, then back to laying down and just wants to sleep. Her eating habits are ok, though could be better...but she's eating none-the-less. Should I take her in and get her checked out?

Our pug did that several weeks ago. Turned out he has allergies. Might want to look into that. Allergic to chicken/poultry and cheese/dairy.

yes she might have carlo

is it possible for 2 fawn pugs to have a black pug?

im sure its possible. I bought my pug from a litter that the mother and the father were black and all the babies were black except for one that was fawn.

My pug puppy is a little over 3 months old. I'm wondering if I have a picky eater on my hands. So far, he's had Iams Smart Puppy, Bil Jac Puppy, Nutro Naturals. Now, we're back to the Iams. He's extremely actrive--loves to run. He eats food with gusto for about 2-3 days, then loses interest. He'll take a mouthful of kibbles, drop them, then play with them. Also, he refuses to eat from a dish, yet he drinks from his dish. We give no table food of any kind. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you have a typical puppy on your hands. Try not to be so worried. You are not doing anything wrong. Pugs think they are people. So, like people, they have their own personality and preferences. I have adult dogs that take each piece of food somewhere else to eat it and then go back for another. I have one that tries to stash it and go back later to eat it. I have one that plays in his water dish and everytime he drinks will jump on my lap dripping water. You can train and teach, but they are still individuals, just like us.
As far as dog foods. Please bear in mind that dogs are carnivores, so the FIRST ingredient should be meat. Corn is great for cows, but dogs weren't meant to eat large quantities of it. You can get lots of good info online about what really goes into commercial dog foods. Hope this helps and enjoy your puppy.

My pug(black) just had a liter of pups. The male pug is fawn.....I have one pup that kinda looks like it may be silver in color......is this common or possible? and if so does that increase her value??

I am a pug breeder and love all the color variations of pugs. So I have done a lot of research on the subject. To answer your question, true silver in the pug is a rare color indeed, which should not be confused with what is being called silver fawn (a white or nearly white pug with regular black markings and no black hairs over the body). I have only ever seen 1 true silver pug and have not found any pictures of one anywhere online currently. A few pictures of silvers I've seen are 100 yrs ago or more. So, it is not likely you have one, but not impossible either. As I said I did see 1 a couple of years ago, so they do exist. But most people wouldn't know one if they saw one. If one pops up in one of my litters, she'll be a keeper.

My three month old pug eats his own feces. What do you recommend to stop this habit? I have tried putting this nose in it and spanking him to no avail

I have a 13 yr old male Pug. I have never been able to solve this. The best reason I got from a well informed vet is a maturity issue. The eat their mothers when they are young for the protein and some dogs just do not grow out of it. I have tired pills, water gun, training and punishment. The best thing to do is to keep it cleaned up as best as possible and watche them in the yard. Please do not get to upset and punish harshley. Pugs are sensitive. To a previous posting; firm is better than yelling. Dinovite also did not work, but it is good for nutrition.

I am planning to buy a pug...What should I check in order to get an ideal specimen. I mean are there certain things which I need to check b4 I buy a pug?

I just bought two pugs from the same litter. They are five months old. For those that have litter mates, how did you go about potty trining them at the same time? Do you take them out separately or together? Do you crate them together?

if you take them out together, they may want to play instead of doing their business. i think it's best to crate them together so that neither of them is lonely, which usually causes problems.

I would rather do it separately so that the pugs don't get distracted by each other.

Is it true that black pugs have a single coat? I have heard that they do not shed as much as the fawn pug.

I raise Pugs and a lot of black Pugs have single coats and do not shed as much as fawn Pugs with double coats. Of course some black Pugs have double coats too and shed as much as some fawn Pugs. But my experience has been that in general blacks do not shed as much as fawns.

I have a black and a fawn pug and yes, the black one does not shed nearly as much hair due to the single coat.

This is totally false. The pug is one breed, black or fawn, a pug is a pug. Both double coats, therefore, both shed just as much. There are alot of pug rumours in the world and I would like you not to believe half of them. Shedding can be taken care of with a regular brushing once a week. Watch out for health problems and ticks and fleas, and grooming should be an enjoyable experience for both the owner and the dog. I know someone who owns a pug, and she is the healthiest dog in the neighbourhood. Sheds just as much as a fawn pug, and just as friendly. Remember, no matter the colour, it's the same breed, the PUG!

We're getting a pug puppy...yeah, very excited, but concerned. The breeder says she is ready to go now. She is 5.5 weeks old. ? Is this too young to bring her home?

According to all AKC and airline and vet regulations, no puppy can be shipped or should go to a new owner before eight weeks of age. They should receive 4 wormings 2 weeks apart with the last one being a 3 day. Also they should receive a parvo at 4 weeks, 5-way and bordatella at 6 and 8 weeks. Also a 5 to 10 day (depending on what type of medication breeder uses) for coccidia (puppy diarrhea.

she is to young well thats what i would say because i heard that the dog has to be at least 2 months old befor leaveing its mom

The pups need to stay with their pug momma and their litter for at least 7 weeks. Perferably a bit longer. Even if they are no longer nursing! The need that social interaction. If a breeder is letting them go earlier, it's probably because they are tired of taking care of them and want their money. It may be good for the breeder, but it is so terribly bad for the pups.

Puppies should NEVER leave their mother before 8 weeks of age. Preferably 9, but NEVER before 8. You should look for another breeder. A good, reputable breeder would not be trying to whisk puppies away from their mother at such an age.

We own a seven month old pug. He has not been disciplined correctly, and has grown immune to yelling. What is a good way to correct/discipline bad behavior if he does not respond to normal means?

I generally oppose yelling as a means to discipline puppies. Remember that dogs crave human attention; even negative attention, such as yelling, is better than no attention. To discourage bad behavior, simply ignore them when they are misbehaving. I actually put my dogs in "time out" for bad behavior. Just the words "time out" now usually correct even very bad behavior for me. If you isolate them when they engage in behavior you do not like on a consistent basis, and allow them positive human interaction when they are well behaved, the problem should work itself out.

instead of a bitter apple spray, you could also get a squirt gun and spray water in his face.

A bark collar! Yes, perfect tool for bark training. Or a spray collar. Whenever the dog barks, a bitter apple spray will spray right in the dog's face.

I own two pug brothers from same litter, they are 3 yrs old,and sleep together and love one another.however lately, one pug upon awaking will immediately attack his brother jump him and growl viciously at him, then he settles down and its over. what could be causing this behavior?

Dominance. The one pug is being like the "Leader of the Pack" and is putting the other in his place.

what i think is that one dog thinks its brother is getting more love then he is and he gets mad at his brother and u need to spend more time with both or hes doin that because he wants attintion than his brother

Are they desexed? If one or neither are then it is a dominance thing.

I only have one pug. I aso have a Boston Bull and our pug will do the same thing! She tease-takes thing away from the Bull dog! She is a lot younger and thinks she can get away with it too ! What do you do about it??

I own a pug that is digging everything in my house and also is destroying walls and furinture. How do I get him to stop tearing up my house and make it possible for me to leave him home alone with out putting him in a cage.

I also have a pug dog that tore everything up when left alone and still does. So I bought the baby play fence. About $60 at babies r us and he stays in anytime I am gone and not as small as a cage so he has a little more room.

A cage or kennel would be the solution in your case. This is a dog and if it damages your house you obviously want to address this right away. I do not understand what people have against cage or kennel. My dogs were all trained in a cage and they are very happy.Well, this is your decision.

get another pug-that is what i had to do-pugs hate being alone-they are not dogs that like to be left aloine, but with another pug esp. or dog around they are happy and fine.

1 get more toys and walk 2-3 times a day my pug did tha and all i did is give more time outside then more toys and that all ended just dont go tooooo far they dont like it because you will carry them home

He probably isn't getting enough exercise. He is chewing and tearing things up because he is frustrated. Chewing and tearing things up is a way to vent that energy. A couple of 20-30 minute leash walks plus some playtime in the yard/dog park should help him relax.
