Saint Bernard Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

My st bernard is 9 years old and her heat cycle seems to be debilitating for her. Is this typical as a giant breed gets older?
Post Response
My Saint is a little over 2.5 yr old and last year experienced a problem with allergies. I used a short term dose of prednisone and that knocked it down. With allergery season coming on I would like to know if there are other solutions. Allergies seem to be environmental. Spent the winter in AZ and had no problems!

My St Bernard 6 Months Old is very Aggressive He jumps on cars and people How can i make him non aggressive and gentle.
Step on his hind toes if he jumps on you. He'll quit soon but meanwhile you must remind him this is not acceptable behavior. Firmly but gently reprimand his each time he jumps on a car

I have an 8 month old St.Bernard puppy and I'm a little concerned about his bloodshot eyes. This is at its worst just after he has woken up from a nap. Is this a standard with regards to the breed?
Post Response
can both rough coat parents produce smooth coat puppies?
If 2 rough coated dogs are bred together they can't produce smooth coated puppies. If a rough and a smooth are bred they can have smooths and roughs If 2 smooths are bred they can have both coat types as well.
You will have to look into the genetics. If rough coat is a dominant trait in the breed's genes, then yes, two rough coat parents have the possibility of producing a smooth coat pup. But both parents must have an allele for smooth coat, so you might also want to look at their close relatives and see if any smooth coated dogs are in their blood line (which would increase the chance that your sire and dam carry the correct alleles).
The male will know when the female is on heat, if that's what your asking?
sure they can
