Shih Tzu Question and Answer

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site.

My one year and 6 months old shih tzu, Hiro didn't eat his food for 3 days already. i went to the vet and he tried giving Hiro different dog foods because maybe Hiro doesn't like his food anymore.. sadly, he really didn't feel like eating anything.. :( the vet said maybe Hiro is having emotional problems so he asked if Hiro has some dog-friends too.. and his advice is to have them play for a while.. is this really possible? HELP! :((

I have 2 questions. I have a 3 year old Shih Tzu mix (he's a rescue) that constantly licks my microfiber couch and leaves huge (dinner plate size) wet marks. Is this a problem?? Sometimes he will lick the carpet but I haven't seen him do that lately. Also, he just went through an absessed anal gland (horrible, I pray no other dog or owner has to go through that), is that common for the breed and if so is it common for the gland to be removed??
Post Response
My Shih Tzu has an itchy spot on his back, he keeps licking it. I can cut his hair and keep tea tree lotion on it and that helps but it ruins his looks. Is there anything else I can do for this?
We had the same problem. You need to take her to a vet that will give you both an oral antihistamine and an antibiotic. Without the antihistamine, it doesn't work. then keep using a topical antibiotic spray for the rest of their life. Also feed anti-allergy foods without byproducts, basically, chicken, rice and vegetables.

can a 6 year old shitzu give birth safely?
I speak only as an owner that has had 2 litters - Not a professional breeder or Vet! Our 7 year old female has had 2 beautiful litters in the past year - we had only wanted one - but were slow on spaying (that is happening today). We own both male and the female. Both litters were very healthy, and all went to great homes! We supplemented her diet with vitamins and extra proteins during pregnancy and nursing. All has gone well - but will say the second litter seemed to put a lot of weight on her forelegs causing a bit of turnin - she has regained her strength and movement - it was a clear sign to stop.

I have an almost 9month old female shih-tzu female.I think she may be going through her menstrual period. How long does it last?
With my shih tzu it lasted about 2 weeks. I bought her a little thing to wear like underwear and I put a human panty liner in it to keep from messes.

I have a shih tzu that is 49 days pregnant and will not eat much food. She's active and playful but will not eat much of her food. This is her first litter. Is this normal?

I have a 9week old shihtuz pup i have had him a week he was fine until today he keeps going to the toilet every 10-15mins its diarrhea with blood through it i haven't changed his food and he seems fine otherwise can anyone tell me wot might be wrong with him?
Try looking for white dots in his poo. If he have white dots he have parasites. Put a little poo in a bag, go to vet (might wanna call first), wait 1-3 weeks for vet to see what kind of parasite and see what med is best for him. If its just plain blood and poo also see a vet because there might be some internal bleeding going on. Hope this help people!
He has worms. You should see a vet.

My Shih Tzu is 9 weeks old. When can I start bathing her?
I got my Shihtzu at 9 weeks and bathed her the next day, I bouth Puppy Shampoo at Petsmart and she's never had a problem. She is now 11 mos. I have read that they can be bathed once a week, I bathe her every 2 weeks, and I take her to the groomer about once a month. I brush her every other day, they can get matted very easily, I've learned. I also feed her a holistic food, Blue Buffalo, and she does not scratch, her coat is shinny and although she doesn't "love" the bath part, I notice she is very happy afterwards.. and is now used to the blow dryer, good luck!

My shih tzu had pups 10 days ago. before the pups where born she went on a walk daily. When can I take her on a walk again?
At around 2 weeks.

We have a Shih Tzu that scratches a good deal. After 3-4 vets, we concluded that he has allergys or a skin problem. If someone knows of a shampoo or other treatment, we would like to hear about them.
Use a shampoo with aloe and oatmeal. That's what I use on my tri colour. I use a whitening shampoo on my tuxedo (black and white)
Ours was scratching a lot. Noticed that when we put front line on him, within a week he started scratching. Skipped the next month and most of itching gone.
I have a 4month old and he tends to scratch alot. My vet told me it could well just be a habit! Not sure if this helps you..

I have a 9 month old male shih tzu and i just noticed that his testicles are swollen, i have not noticed this before is this normal?
Post Response
I have a ten week old shih tzu puppy she's very sweet and active but she tends to breathe really fast at times. Should i be worried?
Mine does the same, mainly when she gets excited (like when we get home from work). They say it has to do with their short beak and its normal. I usually just try and calm her down - and get her to slow her breathing
If it breathes really fast after a walk, or after playing, then don't be worried.

What is the average length between cycles for a shih tzu. I adopted one May and she went into to heat 3 days after we got her. Just wondering how much time I have before the next cycle

My Shih Tzu seems to be in good health, every few days it throws up, is this normal for this breed of dog?
Mine does the same thing, when she doesn't eat much the day before she wakes up the next morning and does this. I've also had to change her food to a special food from the Vet's office with dogs with digestive problems and this has helped.
Our Shih Tzu will throw up if he doesn't eat much during the day, or forgets to. He will basically throw up yellow bile and we encourage him to eat or give him a biscuit. He doesn't throw up too much though. If you think your dog is thirsty and for some reason isn't going to the water dish, give him/her an icecube.

I am wondering at what age is a male Shih Tzu is able to get a female Shih Tzu pregnant?
My male got our female pregnant and he was only 10 months old.
3-5 in human years.

my shih tzu is having trouble goin to the bathroom, when she trys to go potty it only comes out of her butt a little...it does this about 1-3 times a week...shes 18 weeks... i am very worried about her... is there something wrong?
What do you mean it comes out a little? If you mean half way, then, it isn't able to produce that skill yet. I think it's not normal. Just wait about 3 more months, and it should be normal!
Post Response
I have a six month old male shih tzu i just wanna know at what age can I start to breed him?
He has to be older than 2 but younger than 6.
Post Response
When does a pregnant Shih Tzu start to show?
The Shih Tzu will have a bigger stomach. She will also act a bit differently and probably woulnd't want you to touch her around the stomache.

What is the difference between a shih tzu and a lhasa apso?
I recently read that the Lhasa Apso is a purebreed that came from Tibet. At some stage the Dalai Lama gave one to a Chinese Emperor who owned Pekinese. The Emperor then mated the Pekinese with the Lhasa Apso and there you have the Shih Tzu. I makes sense as all 3 have different length nose, the Lhasa's being longest, the Pekinese being the flattest and the Shih Tzu in between.
It is said that the Lhasa Apso was bred with the pekingese, creating the shih tzu. The Lhasa Apso has the longest nose, and the pekingese the smallest. The Shih Tzu is medium.

I have taken my baby boy to the Vet. every month to get a shot for shedding.I know he shouldnt shed.I bath him 1 time a week and buy all the shampoo and con. from the vets.I dont know what to do .
You should stop bathing him so often, depending on his age he will shed his fur, this breed can do this for up to 2 years it's only puppy fur.
He might be allergic to his food and any Cowhide snacks. My girl was going through the same thing, took her to the Vet & he gave me DERM CAPS also told me its a allergic reation to foods I was currently given her. I threw away anything that had cowhide written in the lables I now give her for food Pinnacle(duck & potatoe flavor).

I am looking to purchase a mini shih tzu and I don't know whether to get a male or female. Is it difficult to take care of a female as far their menstrual cycle?
Getting a male is the same, if you don't neuter the male, he will jump on all the girl dogs and pee practically on every corner.
You can get her spayed and you won't have to worry about it at all.
Post Response
how old does my shih tzu have to be to have puppies
I think the shih tzu will heat around 6-7 months.. but it is not advisable to breed her when she is just less than 1 year as she may not be able to take care of her puppy well as she is still a puppy herself. Some organizations will not issue pedigree certification..

my new 15 mos shih tzu is adorable but very strong dog smell. I have bathed her weekly, its not enough. Is this common w/this breed?
I call that the stink beard and do a serious beard clean once a week. I bathe him about once a month so his skin doesn't dry out. sometimes if you have cats and the dog is eating to much cat food (to much protein) or food with to much crude protein they can smell too.
I bathe my shih tzu twice a week most especially now that it is summer time.. Dog smell could be contributed by dirt, dog food, or maybe genetics. You may try using Bearing Dry Shampoo in between baths. It is a powder that will help clean the dog and keep off the smell. HOpe this helps
Hi there, You're most likely bathing her too much. All breeds vary but it is advised to bath your dog once every 3 months and in between this time just wipe them down with a damp cloth. Unless, he/she is covered in mud after a walk etc. The natural oils the dog produces to help aid health skin and hair are washed away if the dog is bathed too regularly. I suggest you leave her a little longer then a week next time and see how she fairs out. If the smell persists I suggest you bring her to a vet but I really do believe that you are bathing her way too much. Best o f luck x

I have a 8 month old Shihtzu, and I can't seem to break her out of eating her poop. It there anything I can do to discourage her from doing this. I have tried picking it up ASAP, tried pills, called Potty Mouth, scolder her when she did, and praised her when she didn't. Every other Shihtzu owner tells me their pups do the same thing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You
My Dog does that too and I bought him From Diana Stokes. I beleive the dog had nothing else to eat as a puppy. I feed my dogs Science Diet and tried other dog foods too, he still will go out in the yarsd and find some poop and bring it in and eat it. I have 3 other Shih Tzu's and none have had this problem, he is almost 2 years old. He also came with ear problems and has passed it on to the other 3 dogs.
I have heard that you can give your shih tzu a little piece of pineapple, the pineapple will make the poop taste bad. Also you may want to think about changing the food you are giving her, it may not have enough nutrients in it and it is not properly being absorbed and so they are making up for that lack of nutrients. Also another reason why your dog is eating it's poop could be that it's a learned thing from it's mother. A mother dog is known for eating the poop to keep the area clean for her pups. If so then it could be harder to keep her from doing that, you will just have to be very persistent with picking up the poo before she gets to it. The next time she defecates make sure you make a startling noise and once she is distracted pick up the poop.

I have a shih tzu who is will be 2 in May. Her hair has not gotten long enough to - to drape the floor like I've seen in Pictures. At what age are most' shih tzu's hair long and flowing.
The Shih Tzu has hair not fur, therefore it will keep growing until you get it cut. My Shih Tzu's hair was almost to the floor by the age of 6 months.
Post Response
At what age to Shih Tzus reach maturity and stop growing?
After the age of 2 in human years.
Usually just after they turn 1.
Post Response
How many puppys do shih tzus normaly have?
3-4 pups per birth. there could always be complications with female shih tzus when getting pregnant.. and female pups are more likely to die

I am getting a shih Tzu pure bred puppy from a private breeder. She has been e-mailing me pictures of the pup, and the last ones I got showed a raised scar-like line on his nose. He is only 4 weeks old and is dark chocolate in color (liver). In the previous pictures this was not there. The breeder said that the puppy’s nose pigment was changing to a darker shade. Is this true?
We had the most beautiful puppies from puppiesontheprairie.net. I would recommend her to anyone who wants the very best at a very reasonable cost.
I would be cautious. Breeders can do some bad things. Check to make sure the breeder has certification and go visit the breeder. If the dogs are kept in dirty kennels you are most likely dealing with a puppy mill.
Yes it is. The puppies are generally born with light noses and they darken over time

I have a nine year old shih tzu. is she too old to have puppies safely.
are they too old to give at five years

my shih tzu has this black sticky gunk in his ears and i have no idea what it is.does any body know what it could be?
It could be ear mites. Ask you vet about it. If you don't catch it early, they ear gets covered mite gunk. (Blackish)
Needs to get ears cleaned and go to vet for ear medication. They need their ears cleaned out every two weeks or shorter time, ask vet.
it prabably ear wax. :p
Post Response
is the removal of their tear ducts recomended?
Well, maybe but not necessarily. these dogs are prone to it. Just to be sure, you should ask your vet for advice.

Post Response
up to how many puppies a shih tzu may give birth to?

It depends on the size of the female. Larger females will tend to have more pups, in the 6-8 range, where the smaller ones can have 1-5 pups.

We have a two year old what would he be like with a puppy of the same breed?
Two years ago we got our two year old a companion. Our first is a male. He is a sweet dog, loves feet. The first few days after we got the little girl puppy he wasn't so sure what to think of her. They get along great now. She definantly takes control of things, though.
Post Response
How are they with other dogs in the household??? I have a Cavalier King Charles who is very sweet and timid. Is this dog the alphadog type?
i have shih tzu and german sheapered they get along good but it took a while to get along
This breed will probably take charge of a less dominate dog. Depending on how old and timid your King Charles is he/she may or may not like having a new partner.
