I have a Silky Terrier aged two that I recently adopted. She only weighs about 5 pounds and her height is about 7 inches from her feet to her shoulders. My question is would she be considered a "toy" Silky or is this still within "normal" silky weight/height? Thank you.....Lin B.

I have a silky terrier who is 3, and her hair is still very short! I've never cut it, even when she was a pup. I dont cut it now either. Why has her hair not grown as long as most others?

I have a silky terrier, Rascal, and he is about 12 weeks old. I can already see that he's turning gray or silverish. Do all of these types of dogs turn gray? Will he turn gray all over or just around his head? It really doesn't matter we're in love with him no matter what! But, we are just curious. Thanks!

No, not all Silkies turn gray. The colors do vary, most are a metal bue on the back and blonde around face, legs, and neck. Some even have somewhat of a rough coat around the mid section of their backs. That is not a highly desired trait though. your welcome

I have a silky terrier he is about 10 months. I love him so much and he is very loving towards me and my family. He, Remington, is incredibly intelligent, but he hates children. I do not have any children myself nor does my immediate family. But there will be in a few years and I do NOT want to have to give him away. He gets really defensive and tries to go after kids shirts, especially if they are running. Though he has never actually attempted to bite them, I fear it could happen anytime. PLEASE HELP! I am just so sad and want to find a solution.

I used to have the same problem with my silky, Bella, but now she is terrific with children. I made sure to keep her around people for socialization.. when she would start growling or chasing a child i would sternely call her and smack her..not hard just enough to know that she wasnt going to do that.. shes now great with people, if they dont think they have to listen, they wont. just be patient..and just dont freak.

I have a silky terrier now who has floppy ears still as a 6 month old. I know his ears may perk up in time but I personally like the floppy ears. Is there a way to know if the puppy will have perked or flopped ears when choosing them as a puppy? In the future I'd love to have another silky and want him to have floppy ears instead of the cropped kind. Anyone know if there is a way to tell?

with my dog, bella, we got her at 7 weeks... shes always had floppy ears..so i have to say..in most cases.. if their ears are floppy young..theyre gonna stay floppy

My name is Amy I own a 10 month old Silky Terrier Named Lil Jack the Nipper- about 6 months is when his teeth all started to come in and his ears started falling down...I started researching and found out that during the teething process dogs tend to let their ears just "hang" a book suggested that I trim his ears for this process so I did so and within two months his ears were normal again good luck!

I am a second time Silkie owner. My last baby (Loki) was quite old when we rescued him from a parking lot. The vet guessed he was probably 12 or so. And even though we lost him last year, we have comfort knowing the last few years of his life were good. We have a new Silkie now. His name is Raymond and he is also a rescue, but he is much younger. The vet estimates him to be 2-3 yrs old and he is gorgeous! My question is about his coat. When we first got him, he was definitely silver and tan, but now he seems to be getting darker. It started around his shoulders now it is going up his neck, it is very dark gray. I always heard that silkies were black as pups and turn silver when they get older. Can they turn darker again?

okay, first of all.. silkies are a very dark gray on back and head.. and tummy and legs ashy blonde when puppies. then as they get older, yess they change colors.. mine was almos black an now at the roots its getting blonde. they change colors alll the time :)

How do I get my Silky Terrier's ears to stand up?

silky's normally after 6 months or so have perked ears naturally. my silky is 6 months and still have not perked. I like him better with droopy ears, personally. I heard that sometimes its just part of the breed your siky is from why his ears have not perked. If you're really interested in the ears standing tall you can get them cropped.

We got a Silky Terrier but she dosent really like to eat much, she plays with us but when we give her food, even meat but she never eats anything. What do Silky Terriers like to eat the most?

We adopted our silky when she was about a year old. She's 2 now, well adjusted, but is terrified of going close to any other dog - even friendly small ones. Any ideas?

Yes, you can get her as close as possible to a small friendly dog, whenever she gets closer give her a reward(treat, praise). Do that often and that way she'll associate other dogs with good things.

I'm considering adopting a silky. Do you think a 12-pound silky could squeeze through the 3 3/4" pickets in my fence? Thanks!

Yes, anyway's dogs like Labs can fit though small holes in the wall. I think the silky terrier can manage.

Hi I have a 5 month old female Silky and she's been eating her poop. How do I get her to stop?????

I have a female silky as well, who was doing the same thing. try giving her pineapples orbuy some adolph meat tenderizer and spinle that on her food. These two things will make her poop bitter to taste and she will no longer eat it.

my silky always starts barking and shivering when it starts to rain, is there anything I can do to stop her from doing so?

We had to get a sedative for our silky from the vet for whenever it stormed outside. He got very anxious during storms.

Do silkies have fur or hair?

hair

my silky is three years old and has been diagnosed with LYMPHNOMA CANCER. The pet store won't stand behind thier warrenty 'cause they say silkies do not get cancer of any type. If any body can help me with any information on this or have had a silky with this problem , anything would help.

You need to get a signed statement from your Vet, or whoever diagnosed the cancer. Present that to the store. I suspect the pet store is simply trying to circumvent their responsibility. Get a lawyer.

my 9 mo. old silky has tried biting me when i check to see what she has in her mouth (she is infamous for finding the least little thing like a dropped paperclip). is this normal?

How do I get my Silky Terrier's ears to stand up?

I think it is genetic. My silky, riley, has ears that stand up all the time, regardless of the length of his hair. His sister, syd, is the same way. But chloe, who I got from another breeder has floppy ears all the time

I like the flopped down ears better than the stand up kind. I think flopped down is much sweeter and gives the dog more character.
However, if you want the ears to stand up, try trimming the ear hair very short so that the ears won't be weighted down with hair.

You probably won't be able to. I can't remember the exact term, but it's a genetic thing. My dog, and several other Silkies I know, have floppy ears and they are just as cute as the up-eared ones!
