hi i have a 20 wk stanard poodle and he weighs 29pds 9 onces i think he is over weight he eats 3 or 4 times a day ..i know that he has to be fed only 2 a day but he i hungry more often what should i do...

as long as he is getting the same total amount a day, why not just break it into 3 or 4. You should ask your vet, really. You could probably just call and ask your vet over the phone as long as your puppy has been seen recently. As a rule, whenever I have a question about my pet, or my child, I call their doctor. Your vet knows your dog, and what amount he should be eating a day. Ask them and follow their advice without worry. Everyone will have a different answer to your question and no one really knows your dog. No offense or anything, but that is what a vet is for really. They do what they do because they care about animals and are intensely educated and involved in animal wellbeing.

Cat pan is in the bathroom and I keep it very clean but every now and then my poodle raids the cat pan. I complain at her and tell her she stinks and push her away doing "pooo" at her. Poodle then acts sorry and is good for a while. The cat is old and a housecat and we live in an apartment so I can't let the cat go outside and just get rid of the cat pan. Please help with this. Should I dump jalapenos in the cat pan or is there a remedy you know?

I have an apricot standard poodle who is very even tempered but she is very aloof. In the morning she wont bother getting out of bed to greet us. Also sometimes when we come in from being out, sometimes she will say hello, often she wont bother. She also doesnt like lying in with us in the evenings. If we call her in, she will lie there really ill at ease and then go and lie in the other room. She also doesn't bother greeting my children although she wags her tail if they call her and is friendly enough if you call her and make a fuss of her, then she goes off on her own again. Is this normal? We are finding it very hard to bond with her because of this behaviour.

I have a Standard (Black). To answer your question, from living with my poodle, what you describe is not the norm. Our girl hangs around myself or wife 90% of the time. If we have a party she will greet each person at the door but does eventually go off on her own. When my wife or I come home, even if we were gone one hour or eight, she greats us like she has not seen us in 10 years. She sleeps on her bed next too me every night. She will get on our couch and lie next to me, resting her head on my leg. She does not constantly ask to be pet ( which is a good thing), but is happy to let us pet her when we call.

It sounds like you're describing my 8 month old standard poodle, also apricot. He is a good temperment, super friendly, not aggressive, but very independant and not particularly affectionate. I have been told he may become more 'devoted' as he gets older. Obedience training is helping him to learn he is not alpha and he seems to look to me more for direction. He doesn't usually greet me when I come home either, but does get excited when other people come to the door.

I have a standard poodle that is so underweight . She has lost 20 pounds because of ear infections and has become a very picky eater. Shes down to 38 pounds. Any suggestions on how to increase her appetite?

A healthy diet should increase that. Try giving her red meat for a while. Dogs are carnivores and that should help her regain all of her lost weight. I have a bichon/poodle mix and my aunt has four poodles and a dachshund. Hamburger meat is the absolute best thing for your poodle. take time to mix it in with dry food and don't forget to occasionally put some rice and broccli in that mixture. Hope this helped!

Have her tested for addison's...

I adopted a rescued Standard two weeks ago. She has very sunken eyes. The vet said it could just be a result of being malnourished, but could it also be from breeding? Or is there a genetic disorder that is signalled by sunken, weepy eyes?

I have a 17 week old standard and I see a light brown stain from her tears. What is the best way to clean the hair by the eyes? I'm using baby shampoo now.

The only thing i have found that works on tear stains (I am a groomer) is Angels Eyes food supplement.

Perhaps you can get doggy eyewipes? I'm not that sure though.

Can rice be feed to Standard Poodles?

I have fed my Standard rice mixed with drained hamburger according to my Vet's advice when she wasn't feeling well. Great results

I don't recommend, but give a small amount. VERY small.

I have a ten month old toy poodle. I'm wondering why he shivers even if the air is warm outside when I take him out to go potty. Is it because he has a cold or is it something else?

Your dog is not necessarily cold... "Shivering" is a typical sign of poorly bred little (toy) dogs. It usually occurs when the breeder does not abide by the "line breeding" method of inbreeding. This type of inbreeding produces healthy dogs while still selecting good qualities of the breed (for poodles that would be a square build, thick coat, smooth gait, high tail set...). It sounds like your pup might be inbred. Contact your breeder if you have any further questions.

He's cold, dress him up.

We are looking for a breed of dog that will not only be a beloved family member but would serve as a guard dog and help with rodent control on our propery. Would a standard poodle be a good pick?

Yes. My female Standard Poodle loves to prowl the property hunting critters including rats, mice, squirrels and unfortunately, skunks...She has brought me both live and dead mice as "gifts".

My standard has a yeast infection in his ears. Are there home remedies?

Our standard poodle had recuurrent ear infections, which was diagnosed as a food allergy. We changed her diet, and she has been fine ever since.

I have a male Standard who was having constant ear infections. Turns out he has food allergies. We switched him to a different food. Otomax works wonderful when his ears bother him - clears them up very quickly.

Solution of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 rubbing alcohol is a good start. Pour into the ear and then clean with a cotton ball. Your dog will shake out the excess. If the ear is red or inflamed you can't use the solution - it will burn.
This works on our poodle, who is prone to ear problems.
Hope this works for you as well.

do you know a reputabe breeder in new england with relatively short standard poodles? say, 17 or 18 inch females?

I am considering getting a Standard Poodle - I have read that they do not like to be left for long periods. My question is will an adult dog be okay with me being absent for a day at work (about 8 - 9 hours)? Other than that the dog would be with us during the morning, evening and all day weekends.

I had a standard poodle for 13 years. it was me and him for all but 3 of those years and i would leave him home while i worked regular 8-hr days. he was fine with it. very happy to see me when i got home but he was not depressed or anything - pets sleep a lot during the day, both dogs and cats, and my sammydam would sleep while i was gone and when i came home he was wide-eyed. just like people, it's all on what they are taught and get used to.

In short the answer is no - 8-9 hours is far too long to leave a poodle

I have a 6 month old standard poodle. He is great, the only thing that bugs me is that he pees when some people try to pet him. He is OK with me, but he does it when my friends come by. How do I get him to sto this? I don't mind it when he is outside, but it gets me when he pees on my new carpet. Please help with some suggestions.

I had this same problem with my Standard Poodle when I first got him as a puppy. He did finally out grow it. I noticed that once he had greeted people and calmed down it stopped, so I would have him greet people outside, whether is was at home, Petco, the training facility, or wherever, until he settled down and then go back inside. I did a LOT of socialization with him and he outgrew it. He is now 9 years old and the best dog I have ever owned. He is a Therapy dog, has a UD and a RAE in Obedience and spends his evenings lying in my lap.

I think your poodle is nervous or afraid. You should try putting him outside and haveing your friends play or pet the poodle. It should get used to this and probably won't pee anymore. I know this from experience.

Is it safe or recommended to give cows milk to a miniature poodle. I have been told that all dairy products are taboo.

is the standard poodle the largest of the poodle breed and if not what is ??

The standard is the largest. There is no such thing as a "Royal" standard, these are just very large poodles.

The standard is the largest, but there is a sub-variety of the standard that is larger called the "royal standard" that can get up to 75-90lbs.

Yes it is. The standard poodle is the biggest and calmest of all the sizes

how can i put some weight on my dog? our standard poodle is almost 3 yrs old. we feed him a wheat/corn/soy free diet(poodles can have issues with those), he is not a gluten, eats whenever he is hungry and loves getting his treats..he is however about 10 lbs underweight. does anyone have any suggestions?

I have an extremely active standard who tends to drop weight in the winter cold. I always have success putting it back on him by maintaining a structured feeding schedule;2x a day; and slowly increasing his quantity by 1/4 cup each meal per day. When I notice the slightest gain, I continue the current per meal quantity until the weight returns. You don't want them to lose or gain at a rate of any more than one pound a week. Weather, allergies, activity opportunities, and simple depression( bad haicut, one of their people or fellow animal friends gone for more than a day, or an increase in household activity that doesn't involve them), can all account for a temporary weight loss or gain without the presence of illness or infestation. Of course, sometimes they just don't like their brand of food anymore and need a change for awhile. Good Luck

when my dog is underweight i put her on a schedule diet of feeding her foods that will put the weight on at the same times evry day keeping a constant diet shud help the weight hope it helps

Try giving him Bil Jack, the frozen dog food. That's what I do when my poodle is underweight before I show her.

Try different diets, i would recommend the BARF diet. "Biologically appropriate raw food"...or something like that. Search it up and try it! Hope it helps.

Have you checked for parasites?

keep up the feeding
