Around the turn of the 20th century, a man named Alexander White observed a small brown Spaniel wandering around his church in South Carolina. After deciding the dog must be a stray, Mr. White took him home, only to discover that the dog possessed amazing natural hunting abilities. Mr. White gave the dog to his hunting partner, a man by the name of L. Whitaker Boykin. This dog was crossed with the American Water Spaniel, the Springer Spaniel, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and select breeds of Pointers to form the contemporary Boykin Spaniel. Today, the Boykin Spaniel is predominately used as a hunter for birds and water fowl. The breed is most popular in southern parts of the United States with bird hunters. South Carolina recognized the Boykin Spaniel as its official state dog.
