Boykin Spaniel

General Description

The Boykin Spaniel is a hunting breed with a sturdy build and compact, muscular frame. They have a typical Spaniel type head with a broad skull, moderate stop, and medium-length, square-shaped muzzle. They have long ears that are covered in curly hair and amber or golden eyes with a thoughtful, wistful expression. Their light eye color is one of their signature characteristics. The only major differences between the two breeds are that the Boykin is larger in size, has smaller ears that are set higher on the head, and has a considerably less amount of hair. The Boykin Spaniel has a waterproof coat this is curly or wavy in texture. This breed’s coat is Liver or Brown in color.

History

Around the turn of the 20th century, a man named Alexander White observed a small brown Spaniel wandering around his church in South Carolina. After deciding the dog must be a stray, Mr. White took him home, only to discover that the dog possessed amazing natural hunting abilities. Mr. White gave the dog to his hunting partner, a man by the name of L. Whitaker Boykin. This dog was crossed with the American Water Spaniel, the Springer Spaniel, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and select breeds of Pointers to form the contemporary Boykin Spaniel. Today, the Boykin Spaniel is predominately used as a hunter for birds and water fowl. The breed is most popular in southern parts of the United States with bird hunters. South Carolina recognized the Boykin Spaniel as its official state dog.

Post Response
How much does the Boykin Spaniel shed? If considering one to be a house dog, is there hair everywhere? This was my only complaint about my lab and I am wondering if the long hair is as bad or worse?
