Chihuahua

General Description

The Chihuahua is a very small-sized dog with a proportionately robust build and distinctive facial features. Their body is stout and just longer than it is tall, and they have straight limbs. They have a sickle-shaped tail that curls over the dog’s back or off to one side. They have an apple-shaped head with a short, tapered, pointy muzzle. Their large eyes are round, dark, and can sometimes be ruby or luminously-colored. They have large, triangular-shaped, erect ears that are a distinguishing characteristic of this breed. Chihuahua puppies have a soft spot on the top of their skull that closes as they become adults. There is a long-haired variety of Chihuahua, but the most common variety is the short-haired Chihuahua. Their coat comes in a variety of colors including fawn, sand, chestnut, silver, and steel blue. They may also be black & tan or tri-color.
User added info

Chihuahua's are often referred to as a 'chico' (ch-e-co), The Chihuahua comes in almost an endless amount of colors. They come in white, brindle, chocolate, black and merle. Merle is trying to be bred out because of a gene that causes blindness and deafness. Some Chihuahua's tails don't curl. A tail that curves over to one side, or that is curly or kinky or twisted is a sign of an improperly developed spine and can be linked to other health issues. The Molera is a correct breed trait that only sometimes closes. Most Chihuahuas have an open Molera (though smaller is better) for their entire lives. Deer, Micro and Tea Cup Chihuahuas are marketing terms that some breeders use to sell small, improperly or underdeveloped dogs. There is no such thing as a T-cup Chihuahua. Chihuahuas belong to the TOY group. Shaking or trembling is not a normal Chihuahua trait. Shaking is a sign of low blood sugar or anemia and urgent care may be required. They may also shake when nervous or stressed out.

Character

The Chihuahua is lively, alert, proud, and makes a good companion. They seek and demand affection, and they are very spunky by nature. They are determined, courageous, and they become very attached to their owner(s). They have a jealous streak, and they will follow their owner’s every move if strangers are present. Some Chihuahuas are difficult to train, but they are intelligent and generally learn quickly. They are most receptive to gentle training and positive reinforcement. The Chihuahua doesn’t like to be poked, pestered, or teased, and he may snap if a child provokes him. Because of their small size, they will resort to using their teeth if they feel threatened. This breed can be noisy and difficult to housebreak. All Chihuahuas should be properly socialized to avoid the onset of aggressive behavior. This breed is usually aggressive towards other dogs.
*

The Chihuahua is also very courageous, lively, proud, affectionate, loyal, intelligent, and enterprising.

General Health

The Chihuahua may wheeze or snore because of his very short nose. The breed has prominent eyes that are prone to corneal dryness and secondary glaucoma. Other health concerns include slipped stifle, colds, stress, and rheumatism. This breed shouldn’t be overfed. Frequently, Chihuahuas are born by cesarean section because of their proportionately large-sized heads. This breed typically lives for more than 15 years.
*

The chihuahua can live up to 13 to 15 years on average. They are prone to get stye in their eyes. This breed is also known for epilepsy and seizures. Seizure medication can cost as much as $60 a month. It is very common after they turn 2 years of age in poorly bred Chihuahuas. The smaller a Chihuahua is bred to be, the more health issues the dog might experience. Small Chihuahuas may develop low blood sugar. And need to eat several small meals to sustain their energetic little bodies. They are known to go into sugar shock very quickly and if not quickly treated, can result in death. In extreme cases you can restore the sugar with Nutra Cal (puppy vitamin gel), maple syrup or even Karo Syrup (just a tiny bit can do the trick)

History

The Chihuahua is the oldest dog breed on the continent of North America, and it is the smallest dog breed in the world. The breed is native to Mexico, and many believe it was introduced to the region by the Chinese. They were named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, the place where they first arrived. The breed is thought to have been sacred to the Pre-Colombian Indian nations. The Chihuahua wasn’t brought to Europe until the end of the 19th century.
*

The early Toltecs of Mexico had similar dogs to the Chihuahua called the Techichi. They were used for reaching the gods and helping the dead pass on to the after life.

Maintenance

The smooth, short-haired coat of the Chihuahua is easy to groom and take care of. An occasional brushing and wipe-down with a soft cloth are sufficient methods of upkeep. The long-haired variety of Chihuahua should be brushed on a daily basis with a soft bristle brush. All varieties of the Chihuahua should receive a bath on a monthly basis. Owners of this breed should make sure to avoid getting water into the dog’s ear canal. Chihuahuas are average shedders.

Ideal Environment

The Chihuahua is happy in a small household or apartment. They are very sensitive to the cold, and they should wear a sweater on cold days. While it’s tempting to carry the Chihuahua instead of let him walk, it’s important that these dogs get plenty of exercise. They love to go for walks, and they shouldn’t be confined to a small space.

I am the owner of a 9-week old chihuahua that I have had for a week now.  I put him in a crate at bedtime.  How do I get him to stop whining all night?Any help would be appreciated.
Get him a nice furry blanket and a soft stuff animal.  You can put a towel over the front of the kennel so he thinks it time to go to bed, don't go to him when he cries, when he stops then go to him, if you go when he cries, he is training you.  Remember that he is lost and doesn't know where he is, just give him time and let him know you love him.  They are known as blanket dogs, so make sure that he stays warm in the blanket, this is all year long.  Make sure he has his blanket.  You'll have to look for him under it, so please be careful you don't sit on him.
Just let him sleep with you. I have 3 of them and now that they are at a older age , they all sleep in their own bed right next to us.
It all depends on the dog, my Chihuahua was absolutely fine sleeping by himself in a crate as long as the crate was in the same room as me, however my Cairn Terrier was a totally different story. If the crying doesn't get better after a blanket and a few days, for your own sanity get a pet bed instead.
i have a chihuahua too and when i put her to bed in her crate i put a towel under her in the crate and if u keep her in the same room with u like almost all the time she will be quite and go to sleep p.s try it
I have tried putting an old-fashioned wind up clock in under the blanket..the tick tick comforts and may possibly resemble mother's heartbeat.
if you cant let the puppy sleep with you i would put his or her cage right next to your bed that way the puppy is closer to you and feels more secure because thtz what the puppy wants.i tried this with my whiny chihuahua and it worked perfectly...make sure not to put your puppy in there until you go to sleep because he or she will feel eager to get out and be with you where ever you are at if your still up wandering around and doing whatever...but if tht doesnt work keep him or her next to your bed still but stay up with him a little while not all night just until he adjust to the comfort of sleeping in his or her cage
My chichuachua is 1 yr now he whines all night. but if he sleeps with any of my other 5 dogs he will be fine yours may be lonely, most chichuachuas have seperation angziety.
i have a year old chihuahua and he sleeps in a crate just fine! I got him use to it by when he was little i would let him snuggle with me and when he was a sleep i would put him in the crate along with a bed and a warm blanket. I would say night night time when i placed him in there and just pet him for a few then shut the crate. Dont force him itno the crate because that makes them feel as if they are in trouble and give him a treat once he goes in on his own so he knows he did well. The crate is in the same room as me. Now a year later he doesnt wine and when i say night night time he knows its time to go to the crate. He loves it! It is his little home and His bed and Blanket!
I have a 1 yr old female chi. I thought having her sleep in a bed with me in my bed was the right thing to do but later she started showing signs of aggression and a trainer told me to get her out of my bed! The first night she had until 11pm to stop whining and then we had to put her in another room. The next night she slept through the night. Now, she puts herself to bed around 10pm. It's so funny! She's got a pull-out couch and her blanket in there and she loves it. In the morning when my husband goes to work, he takes her out to do her business and she races as fast as she can up into our bed. That's her snuggle time and she knows it. It's really hard to hear them cry, but stick with it and be firm! They are very smart little things and will fool you. Good luck!
you put him close to a ticking clock that help them relax and also in a warm place.

i own a chihuahua of 4 months ,i took to the vet he has diarea and vomiting. he gave him meds. but hes just getting worst. now his direa is more watery and blood like. please respond i am very worried and scared.
Please take him to the vet asap.  They can go down very fast.  Make sure that he has Nutra-stat to keep his sugar up.  Has he had all his shots?  He could have parvo. You can give him pepto bismol and see if this helps him.  don't let this go on for long, you could lose him
that sounds like parvo but could be coccidia did you puppy get better yet, need to have the vet do a fecal that is the best way to detect what is going on with your puppy, good luck
This happened to my puppy too; the vet said she had an infection, which she probably got from smelling something she shouldn't have smelt(other doggy poop). Definitely take to the vet, will need antibiotics.
My puppy had the same problem diarrhea blood in his stool. Took FOUR different fecals at four different times all came up negative, Than it came up mPositive, Be aggressive and keep bringing nasty stool samples  The parasites are not always shedding . If they are not shedding they do not show up in the fecal.  Good LUCK
I had a 9-month-old male that showed the same symptons and my vet immediately tested for parvo which was negative.  Another test revealed pancreatitis caused by a change in food.  You may have your vet test for pancreatitis.
This definately sounds like Parvo ... but could also be coccidia - The vet needs to test RIGHT AWAY!  I had a sweet baby girl Chi that started vomiting & having bloody liquid like stools & lost her in just 48 hours.  The vet I had taken her to said it was coccidia from food change & in a few days she would be fine - he did not test for Parvo because she was already 1 year old.  I later found out from another vet that with the Chihuahua age does not matter when it comes to things like Parvo - Full grown these dogs are the size of an average puppy & they are MUCH more likely to get very sick & even die from even the most minor illnesses.

Is there such a thing as an Apple Head Chihuahua?
Yes.  That is the way all their heads are shaped.
Not all Chi's have "Apple Heads".  Some have a slimmer profile called a "Deer Head or Deer face". Apple Head represents the round dome and forhead of the their head, making the head look like a little apple. Most Apple Heads have shorter noses too, making their heads look even bigger.  The Deer Headed Chi's have a bit longer nose and a slimmer head, not so round.
Yes, the apple head Chihuahua has the domed head and shorter snout.  This is the standard for the breed.  This is how a Chihuahua is supposed to look.  The deer head Chihuahua came about from breeders breeding inferior dogs and they came up with the name "deer head" to make them seem like something special, they are really just a poor quality dog and do not fit the standard for the breed.

CHIHUAHUAS.

i definately recommend a chihuahua for somebody who needs someone or something to love. definately loyal and will stand by you. i have a 10 month old chihuahua and he is already part of the family. we could never give him up. hes very playful and loving and protective. hes very cautious. if he hears something, he will stop whatever hes doing and start barking or be aware of it. he clings to one or two certan people.. very loyal. i know that he wont want anyone hurting anyone in the family because if i were to hit my dad he would bark and want it to stop. I LOVE CHIHUAHUAS.

Pros: chihuahuas are very loyal and protective dogs. all you need to give him/her is love and you will definately get respect from him/her. very outgoing and playful. some may be shy, but others are very outgoing towards others. if youre responsible, i definately recommend a chihuahua for you.

Cons: they are pretty small and delicate. if you fall on it, its very likely that it will break a bone. chihuahuas need a lot of attention, they dont like to stay home alone for too long. 2-3 hours the most.

Chihuahuas

I've had my chihuahua, Kisses, for almost three years now. When I got her, she was 3 months old and had been stuck in a cage with her sister and another dog for her whole life. She opened up SO much when we got her home. She's very intelligent and is a loving dog who is quite attatched to me, yet has a small group of people she's very attatched to, also. Kisses eats basically everything- yes, I'm aware it's generally frowned upon to feed dogs 'people food,' however we're careful, feed her in moderation and give her TONS of exercise. The only negatives on her are that she has a light case of dry skin (an oatmeal shampoo bath helps that!), does NOT like small male children and has an allergy to cinnamon. I purchased a second chihuahua for my mom- her name is Lou, but we often refer to her as "Velcro" because she seems to ALWAYS be right next to you or in your lap. I LOVE chis more than any breed.

Pros: Grows attatched to one person or a few people. Loves attention and being a lap dog. Cautious. Often VERY intelligent

Cons: Sometimes can be almost overly-protective of a certain person. Can sometimes be TOO clingy and too jumpy. Skin conditions (dry skin can be helped with oatmeal shampoo!).
