General Description
The Chow Chow is a sturdy dog with several distinctive features. Their chests are wide and deep, and their abdomens are strong and short in length. They have a broad, flat head and a wide muzzle that becomes narrower towards the nose. Their tongue is blue-black in color and their straight hind legs cause them to walk rather stiffly. Their ears are small and round, and their tail is covered with hair and is carried over their back. The Chow Chow has a thick, furry coat that exists in one of two varieties, smooth or rough. There is a huge ruff of hair behind the breed’s head, resulting in a lion-like appearance. The most common colors for the Chow Chow’s coat are solid red, blue, black, cinnamon, and cream. Other coat colors include tan, gray, and white. Lighter or darker shades may exist within this breed’s coat, but the coat is never parti-colored. Character
Although the Chow Chow is usually docile and well-mannered, he can also be strong-willed and protective. The breed is independent, bossy, and serious in nature. They are persistent to the point of being obstinate. They are loyal to their family, and they are often a one-person dog. They can be aggressive towards strangers they do not like, and they may act reserved in the company of people. They require an owner that is dominant- one who can administer firm and fair training. With proper training and socialization from an early age, the vast majority of Chow Chows grow up quite well. They are intelligent and are capable of learning, but they have to understand the purpose and reason for a command in order to do it. Consistency plays a key role in determining the temperament of this breed. While much success has been achieved, breeders are still working very hard to breed a Chow Chow with a loving, family-oriented temperament.A chow chow is a very loyal, sincere dog that is very affectionate toward it's master. It does not accept muzzles and leashes gladly, but is otherwise polite, clean, and patient. The chow chow is a dog that needs plenty of early and consistent socialization. They can be good with people, but usually are a bit standoffish. It's best to be fair with this dog and they respond well to verbal correction. A firm leader that has plenty of patience is best.

General Health
The Chow Chow is prone to hip dysplasia. They are often susceptible to entropion, an eye irritation that can be fixed with surgery. The Chow Chow is a comparatively healthy breed with few major health concerns or issues. They typically live for about 15 years. This breed lives 10 to 15 years on average. Some may even live to 17 years. This breed is susceptible to bloat.
History
The build and bone structure of the Chow Chow is very similar to that of the oldest known fossilized dog remains that date back several millions of years. The breed has been known throughout China for thousands of years, where they were initially utilized as a hunter, boat guard, and cart puller. One Emperor was said to have kept 2500 pairs of Chow Chow. The fur of the Chow Chow has been used in the past to line coats, and the flesh of this breed was considered a delicacy in China. The Chow Chow was first brought to England by merchants in the late 1800’s. The name was likely derived from the pidgin English word “chow-chow”, a term that refers to a miscellany of things that were brought to England from the far east. Today, the Chow Chow is very popular throughout the United States as a companion dog.
Maintenance
The Chow Chow’s long, thick coat needs regular brushing. They are heavy shedders during season, and extra care should be given to this breed’s coat during this time. The Chow Chow should be shampooed only as necessary.
Ideal Environment
The Chow Chow is content to live in a small household or apartment if he is sufficiently exercised. They prefer to be as lazy as possible, but it’s important for their health that they receive a sufficient amount of daily activity. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do fine with a small yard. They can live outside or inside, but they are sensitive to hot weather conditions.

Love my chow
I have a 9 year old chow and she is the sweetest dog I ever had. She is very independent and wily when she wants to be. She will look over her shoulder and smile at you as she runs in the other direction. She will often refuse to go out if it is raining (which I have read is very common.) She is very patient and non-demanding, loves music-will sit right in front us when we play, and is often found getting belly rubs when we take her to parties.
Pros: Very mellow and sweet. Waits for me to get up in the morning and never whines. She is a great hiking companion with a lot of stamina in all weather-though she prefers not to go out in rain.
Cons: Is spooked by small children. Has never bitten any but instead "puffs" in their faces to try to get them away - if THEY get too close.
Life without a Chow, NOWAY!
I just could not imagine my life without a Chow, this is the only kind of dog that I know of, who no matter what loves their family, They are VERY loyal. chow puppies are not destuctive, and are easily house trained, My Chows love to play in their swimming pools, but do not like the rain at all, They love to go for rides in the truck and love to ride on the 4-wheeler, they are by myside no matter what I am doing,
Pros: A chow loves their family unconditionally, they do wonderful living in the house but they do need exercise they tend to get a little lazy if you do keep them inside.
Cons: they require lots of grooming, and are very suspicious of strangers
Best Dog Ever- My Chow
I adopted a Chow mix 2 years ago. She is the most well-behaved, loyal dog I have ever had. She goes to daycare each day and has a few close canine friends, but prefers people to dogs. She too does not appreciate children and shies away from them. I think it's because they always run towards her and are loud. She does not like boisterous dogs or people, but never ever bites. She only barks when absolutely necessary- if an "intruder" comes into the house or a stranger approaches in a manner she finds threatening. She is a wonderful companion and I rarely go places where I cannot take her. She has completely sold me on the Chow breed!
Pros: Extremely loyal, calm, very clean
Cons: Stubborn
Greatest dog I've had
After my hound died, I didn't want another dog, but 4 puppies were rescued & brought to the campus P.O. Three were bouncy beagles, the 4th was part Chow Chow, sitting quietly. I brought her home and we bonded immediately. I began training early and she lapped it up. She now leads me to any athletic field I name, guards our house when I'm gone & is ecstatic to see me when I return, whether in 15 minutes or 8 hours. She still dislikes small children as one ran up and poked at her face when she was under 6 months old. She loves all others and is a campus favorite, at age 5. When I want to sleep in, she doesn't make a sound until she hears me. I took her on a LONG trip this summer & she was perfect. I hope we have another ten years together.
Pros: Happiest & smartest dog I have ever had
Cons: Steals buns & burgers if they are left out.
Best Chow Ever
I have read some of the reviews above and they all say that their chows are scared of children. I live in an apartment and there are a few children in the area. He seems to be really friendly with them, he loves to hug everyone. He isn't much for playing tug of war but he loves to chase his toys and tail. He hasn't realized yet that it belongs to him. He hates going to the vet in fact he doesn't like anyone who wheres scrubs, bad experience. He loves to wrestle and is very persistent. I have accidentally hit him pretty hard when we are wrestling because he likes to jump around and run really fast and its almost like he doesn't feel a thing. All in all hes been really god to me and easy to train and take care of. Definitely would recommend a chow to any first time dog owners.
Pros: Very Friendly and loving gets along with just about everyone hes ever met
Cons: likes to bark, and gets excited easily, some reason he chews his toe nails. sometimes aggressive over human food and dog bones but not his food bowl or water
I am in love with Chow Chows
This is my first Chow Chow she is still young so i know i have alot to learn. She is by far the easiest dog i have ever delt with. She is extreamly friendly and loves other dogs and has not shown one bit of of aggresion towards kids or other dogs even when kids chase her and act some what cruel. Dogs have tried to pick i fight with her and he doesnt even try to defend herself by biting. She potty trained herself she is very well mannerd. I recommend a chow to anyone who is whiling to put the time into taking them to the dog park or socializing them in some way because they can be a great companion.
Pros: Loving , friendly and tolorates about anything extreamly hard to anger, really happy loves small dogs and wonderful about not going in the house
Cons: suspiscious of some new people but always tends to warm up to them, hot spots
Life without a chow - NOT
I have had my chow for 12 years, she isn't used to children so she doesn't like them. We say she is "shy". She loves walks and rides in the car. She will go anywhere and visit anyone. She is now blind and diabetic and is still the active dog she was 12 years ago. She doesn't bark much - but is protective and lets any one that stops by know that she is in charge.
Pros: Laid back, loving, doesn't bark much - but is protective and lets any one that stops by know that she is in charge.
Cons: Grooming and doesn't like large groups of people
Chow
This is my first chow and she is a mix, at now 10yrs old she is magnificent. She, unlike most I have read here loves children. If they are around she is beyond loving kisses and wants hugs from them. Not much of a barker which is pleasant from our spitz who is one. She is an angel and we plan to get another chow in the future. Very intelligent breed, but she can be stubborn when she wants to be, with her independent streak. Door dweller she loves to sleep at the door so we have been used to opening doors slowly with her. She hates the rain and hates hot weather. We keep her cut a lions minus the tail look. We love her tail full and we don't let them cut too short so she burns. But she reacted good to the cut seemed more energetic with the heat. She is a huge lover of hiking and basking in a pool of water. Always ready for a car ride she is the best traveling dog you could have and never bosses you to get up in the morning.
Pros: Laid back, quiet not a huge barker, loves children (thisone does) loyal very loving!
Cons: snores loudly, alot of grooming
