General Description
(New Zealand Sheepdog)The New Zealand Huntaway is a varied breed. Some of them look like Rottweilers, German Shepherds, or even Wirehaired Vizslas. This breed comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes. This breed does not have a standard because they were bred for a strong herding ability not for appearances. This breed is mostly used as a sheepdog. The term Huntaway comes from the expression that the dogs hunt sheep or cattle away from them with their bark. They were trained to move livestock along, not herd them and bring them back to their master as the Border Collies or the New Zealand Heading dog does.
Character
The New Zealand Huntaway is an exceptionally intelligent dog. Wonderful with people and all animals, this breed does not make a good guard dog but is an excellent family dog. Unlike many intelligent breeds, the New Zealand Huntaway is not usually stubborn and is extremely easy for all types of training. One problem with this breed is that they were bred to herd by barking so naturally they bark quite frequently but with their eager to please attitude training them not to bark can be very simple.
Size
20 – 24 inches
Weight
40 – 65 pounds
General Health
Since the New Zealand Huntaway is bred with the only best and healthiest dogs from many different breeds, they have very few health concerns. They can be happy and healthy family dogs for approximately 12-14 years.
History
The New Zealand Huntaway was created through selective breeding during the early 20th century. Herders noticed some dog specimens were barking in order to herd the animals. To develop this trait, breeding programs were implemented. The breed today is a combination of dozens of dog types and has successfully been created to use barking for herding. New Zealand Huntaways are most common in New Zealand are gaining popularity in England and Japan.
Maintenance
Brushing the New Zealand Huntaway should be done on a regular basis to keep their fur clean and smooth. Baths should only be done when they are truly filthy. Other than that simple grooming, they are maintenance free. However, plenty of exercise is needed for this active working dog. Since this breed was used as a herder, no exercise is too much and no training is too difficult. This breed should have time to run off leash or have actual herding time.
Ideal Environment
The New Zealand Huntaway is an extremely friendly dog that does great in many living environments. The breed is an excellent family dog that is great with children and all animals. Plus, they love attention and are fine with strangers. An apartment will work for this breed as long as plenty of exercise is given. This is a great breed for people with little time for grooming and people with a large yard. One problem with this breed is their frequent barking. This friendly dog does wonderful with families but should not be used as a guard or watch dog because of their very friendly nature.

best pet I have ever owned
I picked up "Amber" from the local shelter. Nobody knew what breed she was. They assumed she was a german shepard mix. She is very laid back most of the time. She can, however, get very excited when playing. she was very easily housebroken. She accepted her new lower position since our son was born, although she isn't happy about the constant poking and attention from the now 5yo boy, she has never bitten or hurt him. She has growled and snapped at him only when his attention was particularly painful, just to let him know. She loves to lick us, she sleeps in bed with us, she strangely doesn't greet us, but will bark angrily when we leave. She has been very healthy, and is now 8 years old, and not showing any signs of getting old. We could do without the shedding, which can be very messy. baths are only every 2 months, she is mostly indoors.
Pros: easily grooms, great with kids, easily trained, very friendly, very loyal, doesn't bark at every little sound, mostly laid back
Cons: alot of shedding, not a good watchdog, very loud earpiercing, bark, barks when excited
Lady
Lady is all around a fun dog, even when she eats my cat's food. Her favorite things to do are playing, eating, and getting petted.I can't stay mad at her long, as after I disapline her she licks my hand begging to be forgiven. She loves ropes and bones.
Pros: Great pet, very friendly, high energy, loyal
Cons: sheds a ton, loves to chase animals, not good watch dog
Huntaway
The best dog I have ever owned. Very loyal and loves being near their master, will follow you to hell and back and lead the way. Very, very, very intelligent, commands are easy to teach. Should learn sit, stay and lye down within in 8-10 weeks of age and from then on more difficult demands can be taught. They need lots of exercise but can be turned into house living pets but park visits and brisk walks are needed as it was born to run and run and run. I love Huntaways, good looking intelligent dogs. Currently looking for a nice purebred (again).
Pros: Very intelligent, clean and good looking (no grooming required), easy to train, loyal and eats only what it needs.
Cons: Barks when excited (not a major con) not a watchdog but will bark on demand
best dog
I love my huntaway he is one of the most fun dogs I have ever had. He was a rescue dog he had bad mange as a pup and has a fear of man sometimes to scared he pees himself. He always has be laughing at silly things he does. Hes hypo and loves to run and play games all day. He is loyal to me and now that hes getting over the puppy stage is getting easier to train. He will follow me when I on my horse. He always wants my attention. Over all I just love the big silly boy to bits.
Pros: Friendly, loves to play, can do anything with even dress up, not grooming required no matter how much mes he seems to get into, good bark whenever someone comes down the drive, doesn't chase the other animals we have (expect when trying to herd the horses)
Cons: Likes to bark at nothing, can get over excited and jump all over you, thinks he is helping when he herds the horses, is very shy of people he doesn't know, likes to destroy things
Sue
Sue is a 5yr old huntaway heading dog cross.Found her on "Tra\dio" for free at 6mths of age.She was timid when I got her.I took her for walks in morninings and evenings for2 mths.In between time she was on a chain. After the 2 mths She spends all day with me on the ranch. She was a natural with very little traiining needed. Every evening after work I tied her up and fed her for 1 1/2 yrs. After that she is now loose 24 / 7.She never leaves the house when I`m inside and when I drive out of the driveway.Otherwise she is beside me soon as I walk out the door for the whole day.Only barks on command only works when I want her to.I``ve had a few dogs over the yrs this is my 1st bitch and the best dog I`ve had.
Pros: Very loyal, very calm(just waits at the house when not at home)good with kids.Works great at moving cattle.
Cons: None
