General Description

The ChiPoo is a designer or hybrid breed of dog that is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Poodle. This breed is also sometimes known as a Wapoo, Fiesta Poo, and Poochi or Poochie. The actual appearance of this breed can vary somewhat and may sometimes look more like a Chihuahua and sometimes more like a Poodle. The Chipoo breed often has hair that is longer and wavy or even curly like a Poodle but tends to have the shape and ears of a Chihuahua.

In some cases, a ChiPoo may have a mixture of both types of coats. The length of a ChiPoo’s coat will largely depend on the type of coat that the parent Chihuahua had and whether it was long or short. The coloring of the ChiPoo can vary widely, largely because there is such a large color variation among both Poodles and Chihuahuas.

This breed is also sometimes called a Choodle and is a fun and intelligent dog. They are very easy to train and reward their owners for time invested. It is an active breed with plenty of energy that needs to be channeled. They are generally loyal like the Chihuahua with the training ease of the Poodle.

The ChiPoo is generally an energetic dog that loves to play. They are also quite loving and very intelligent. As a result they tend to be easy to train. Prospective owners should know that this breed can also be somewhat independent, so training is a good idea for this breed. It should also be noted that this breed has a tendency to become attached to a single owner over other owners. This breed is a very cuddly and loving dog that loves to sit on its owner’s lap.

This is also a very loyal dog and consequently tends to be somewhat suspicious of strangers. Even so, due to the size of this dog, it should not be relied upon as a watchdog. While the ChiPoo is a good family pet, it is not recommended that they join a family with small children due to their small size. They can be easily harmed unintentionally by a child who may play too vigorously.

General Health

The ChiPoo breed tends to experience some of the same problems to which their parent breeds are susceptible. These health problems include snoring or wheezing, secondary glaucoma, corneal dryness, cataracts, gum issues, runny eyes, stress, colds, heart disorders and ear infections. One of the more common problems is an issue with overactive tear glands that is common within the Poodle breed. As a result, a ChiPoo may need to be cleaned around the eye area in order to remove tears that have dried. A small fine toothed comb can be used for this purpose. It is a good idea to start this routine at an early age to ensure the puppy becomes accustomed to it. When well cared for and provided with regular checkups, the ChiPoo has an average life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years.

Maintenance

The ChiPoo breed is not a heavy shedder, which is good for individuals who may suffer from allergies. That said, the ChiPoo breed will need to be groomed frequently. Several times per week, the coat will need to be combed or brushed. The exact frequency will depend upon the length of the coat. In addition, the ChiPoo breed will need to be trimmed several times per year, once again depending on the length of the coat. Generally, this breed will need to be bathed once every month or two or as needed. Brushing before bathing will help to remove loose hair and prevent it from becoming matted during the bath.

Ideal Environment

For the most part, the ChiPoo breed does quite well indoors. They can be happy in an apartment or a condo provided that they have some space in which they can play. As with any dog breed, it is important to take the ChiPoo out for daily walks to ensure they receive an adequate amount of exercise. This is not a dog that can be left alone for long periods of time due to the fact that they become very attached to their masters and crave human companionship. The best home for the ChiPoo will be one in which the owner has plenty of time to devote to the dog and will enjoy cuddling and playing with the dog. The owner should also be prepared for and expect to groom the dog on a regular basis as well. Training is an excellent idea for the ChiPoo as a result of their somewhat independent streak. They are intelligent and clever and usually respond very well to training. The ChiPoo does not do well in cold weather and should be provided with a sweater or a coat if they will be outside in temperatures that drop below 50° F.
