About the Goldendoodle
The Goldendoodle is a hybrid dog that is made up of a combination of two different purebreeds. It's a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodle. We've found the best method for understanding the characteristics of the Goldendoodle is to read both of its ancestors descriptions taking note of their temperaments, size and general look.

General Description
The Goldendoodle is a hybrid or a cross breed between the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. These dogs are also referred to as Groodles, Goldie Poos and Golden Poos. It should be noted that the Goldendoodle is not a purebred dog and as a result they are not a registered breed even when both parents are purebred and registered. There may be first generation as well as second generation dogs available. First generation Goldendooles are produced from purebred Poodles and Golden Retrievers while second generation dogs are produced from hybrid Goldendoodles.
Goldendoodles were specifically bred to be low-shedders, but it should be understood that not all Goldendoolees will be completely hypo-allergenic. This is a mixed breed dog and some dogs tend to take more after one parent than the other. As a result, some dogs may take more after the Poodle while others may take more after the Golden Retriever.
The coat of the Goldendoodle can vary depending upon which parentage it takes after. The coat may be straight, wavy or curly. The exact amount of grooming that will be required for this dog will depend on exactly which type of coat it inherits from the parents. There are also different coat colors that may be blonde, white, tan, chocolate, café, silver, black, red, phantom or even a mix.
The goldendoodle is very hyper, energetic and strong.
Character
The temperament of the Goldendoodle tends to be intelligent and easily trainable. This is because the Goldendoodle typically takes its intelligence from both the Poodle as well as the Retriever; both of which are considered to be highly intelligent dogs. The Goldendoodle is also known for being very affectionate and loving and typically make excellent family dogs. They get along wonderfully with children as well as with other animals within the family. This is a dog that craves human contact and should not be left along for long periods of time. This dog trains very well and learns quickly. They quickly bark when someone appears at the door but they are not known to be excessive in terms of barking. Start training and socialization from birth to prevent unwanted characteristics. The Goldendoodle is a friendly breed for those with allergies and are low to non-shedders.
General Health
The Goldendoodle may be prone to some of the same health problems as Golden Retrievers and Poodles. Some of these health problems may include cataracts and hip dysplasia. It is important for potential owners to research the lineage to determine whether the parents of a dog may have suffered from such problems. Goldendoodles are also known to suffer from some food and skin allergies in certain instances, depending upon their parentage. When provided with good care and given frequent check-ups, the lifespan of a Goldendoodle ranges between 9 and 15 years.
Some Golden Doodles are prone to bloat.
Maintenance
A Goldendoodle will typically require frequent grooming due to the fact that the coat may become easily tangled. For the most part, the Goldendoodle is a low to no-shedding dog. This dog does need to be exercised on a regular basis in order to maintain good health. The dog should be bathed as necessary whenever the coat becomes dirty. Brushing before bathing may help to prevent the coat from becoming snarled.
Ideal Environment
The best environment for a Goldendoodle will be one in which the dog has plenty of space in which to play and exercise. The Goldendoodle tends to enjoy being inside the home as well as being outside. If the Goldendoodle is to be kept in an apartment it is imperative that the dog be taken out for daily walks to make sure that it is able to expel excess energy and get a sufficient amount of exercise. Excess energy will result in chewing of property.
It should be noted that Goldendoodles are great bird dogs, taking after their Labrador parents. As a result, they may give chase to birds when taken out for play and exercise and it may be necessary to supervise them when outside in an area that is not secured. These dogs are very easy to train due to their intelligence and will follow commands easily when they are trained early on. Owners should keep in mind that this dog does need to be around people and typically will not do well when left alone for long periods of time.
