Ori Pei Information

The Ori Pei is a hybrid dog which is a combination of two different purebreeds. It's a cross between a Shar Pei and a Pug. We've found the best way to understand what type of dog your Ori Pei will be is to read both of its ancestors descriptions and understand that any combination of characteristics could be present in your pet. All of the information provided below has been added by people who are familiar with the Ori Pei breed. Your Ori Pei could be different so please be sure to read the Shar Pei and Pug descriptions to get a more educated understanding of possible characteristics.

General Description

The Ori Pei is a type of hybrid breed or a designer breed that is a cross between the Pug and the Chinese Shar Pei. This breed is recognized by The American Canine Association and has been for several years.

Ori Peis are available in a variety of colors including black, white, brown, gray and a mix of colors. The coat of the Ori Pei is about ½” long and features an undercoat that is soft.

The Ori Pei is widely prized due to the fact that it is somewhat smaller than the standard Shar Pei as well as the fact that it manages to maintain wrinkles or creases.

The Ori Pei, like many designer breed dogs, may be what is known as a first generation or a second generation. First generation dogs are those that are produced by breeding a pure bred Pug and a pure bred Chinese Shar Pei. A second generation dog is produced by breeding two Ori Pei dogs. This breed, unlike many designer breeds, has been bred for at least six generations.

Also known as an American Ori-Pei.

Character

The Ori Pei is considered to be a friendly dog that will easily become attached to its family. They are also known for getting along well with children and make a great family dog. This is an intelligent dog that takes to training very easily. As a result, it tends to housetrain easily. Ori Peis can usually pick up commands quickly and are happy to please their masters by learning new tricks. This is a fairly even tempered dog that will get along well in most families. When indoors, the Ori Pei is only moderately active and will usually be happy to remain indoors most of the day and play with toys or nap. The Ori Pei will require some exercise, but this is not a dog that needs a large yard in which to run and play. It makes an excellent indoor pet that gets along well with all ages.

The Ori Pei is a well mannered, friendly dog. They are protective of the entire family and their property. Tricks can be taught very quickly, some as soon as the first training session. These dogs love to play and wrestle. They enjoy being indoors. Often times they have problems with the heat and don't do well in cold weather either. Ori Pei's are kind and appreciate any interaction with their family. They love to sit on chairs and sofas and catch a quick nap. Most Ori Peis enjoy chasing cats and small animals though they aren't prone to hurt or act aggressive. They enjoy the chase.

General Health

The Ori Pei was originally created to help alleviate some of the problems that Shar Pei dogs are known to suffer from, such as hip dysplasia, skin problems and eye tracking. Even so, it is still important for owners to take the Ori Pei in on a regular basis for check-ups. When provided with good care and regular check-ups, the Ori Pei should have an average life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years.

History

The Ori Pei was originally created by a breeder by the name of Aaron Silver living in the United States in the 1970s for the specific purpose of creating a breed that looked like the Shar Pei, but without many of the health conditions that plague that breed such as skin problems, eye tacking and hip dyslplasia. The resulting breed was somewhat smaller than the Shar Pei and does seem to suffer to a lesser degree from many of the problems that affect Shar Pei dogs. As a result, this hybrid breed dog has become quite popular in the last three decades.

Maintenance

The Ori Pei will require regular maintenance in order to remain happy and healthy. This dog will need to be bathed and shampooed on occasion, as needed. In addition, occasional grooming may also be necessary as well. It is important to note that the wrinkles or creases on the Ori Pei’s face will need to be cleaned on a regular basis. If the creases are not cleaned regularly, the dog has a tendency to develop acne. In terms of exercise, only moderate exercise is needed. A good walk is all that is usually needed for the Ori Pei.

Ideal Environment

The best environment for the Ori Pei is one in which it will be able to live with a loving and gentle family. This is a dog tat loves to please and craves human companionship. It does not do well being left alone for long periods of time. While training is a good idea for the Ori Pei and it will respond well, training should be gentle. The Ori Pei, like most dogs will need exercise, but its exercise needs are moderate. Long walks are not necessary with this dog. Prospective owners should note that this dog does not do well in the heat. For this reason, the Ori Pei should be kept indoors most of the time. In warmer climates, exercise and outdoor playtime should be restricted to cooler times of the day. Also, spending time outside may make it more difficult to keep the Ori Pei’s wrinkles clean. Due to the fact that it does not need a yard, is only moderately active indoors and does not cope well with the heat, the Ori Pei is an excellent choice for apartment life.

I love my Oripei

My dog's name is Beautox. He is a tan/black oripei. I love this dog. He was aloof but is now a great big lapdog.

Pros: They are medium sized dogs that are loyal & beautiful.

Cons: They can have ear and skin problems like both of the breeds that make them.

The Lovable Ori Peis

We own 2 Ori Peis and couldn't be happier. They're lovers and want to show everyone how friendly and smart they are. Our little female was already poty trained at 8 wks.

Pros: Very friendly and love children.

Cons: Must make sure their line doesn't have "Shar Pei Fever" in it. Other than that just make sure they're kept groomed and their ears kept clean.
