Character

The Brazilian Terrier’s temperament is comparatively similar to that of a large Jack Russell Terrier. Brazilian Terriers are intelligent, full of energy, and alert. They are also very kind and loving. Brazilian Terriers are friendly and good with children, but they do not like to be teased. Because of their feisty and vibrant nature, they love to play and crave attention. They are strong-willed, determined, and they require a firm and patient trainer. They bark regularly and make good watchdogs. Because of their natural tracking and rodent hunting instincts, Brazilian Terriers shouldn’t be left alone with small animals.

History

The Brazilian Terrier is one of only two native breeds to Brazil. The other breed native to Brazil is the Fila Brasileiro. It is believed that the ancestors of the Brazilian Terrier were the Jack Russell Terriers that were brought to Brazil from Europe in the 19th century. The Brazilian Terrier was developed by crossing the Jack Russels with the Miniature Pinscher and perhaps large Chihuahuas. While the Brazilian Terrier is exceptionally popular in Brazil, the breed is relatively unknown outside of the country. The Brazilian Terrier has existed for a century, but they have only been registered since 1973.

Ideal Environment

The Brazilian Terrier needs lots of physical exercise and outdoor time to stay happy and healthy. If improperly exercised, the breed is likely to become destructive and restless. Brazilian Terriers are not suited for a small household or apartment, and they require a minimum of an average-sized yard. They are relatively active indoors.

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.

Can this dog be an outside dog? we live in ohio and well this dog just showed up one day and wont leave he is cute but I have 2 cats in side. and my house is not that big!

I had a Brazilian Terrier since I am a kid (it actually passed away just a month ago). I really recommend to keep it outside (bring it in during the night eventually) because they are very active, and hyper, and they love to be chasing things on the yard, and playing around. This is the best dog I ever had, much better than poodles, and chihuahuas. Oh, and do not ever think about getting sharpei or chows (I had them and they have very bad personalities).
