The Chiweenie is a small stocky dog. Their legs are slightly short and their body is slightly long. Most are not as tiny and frail as the Chihuahua and not as long as the Dachshund. They often have endearingly large, rounded bat-like ears that may naturally stick up or flop down. A Chiweenie's tail may be slightly curled. They often have a broader snout than a Chihuahua with a slightly wrinkled forehead and very sweet eyes.

Character

Chiweenies are very friendly dog and they bond with their own very quikly. Chiweenies love children and are perfect pets for kids. They are very active and need a lot of love. If you have a child the perfect pet would be a chiweenie!

The Chiweenie's temperament can fall anywhere in the spectrum for what is normal for a Dachshund to what is normal for a Chihuahua. Both breeds are known to bond strongly with their owners and are extremely affectionate with lots of energy and sass. Both breeds are known to not be well suited for small children. They may bark frequently and have a tendency towards shyness and reservation in the face of strangers. In terms of training, both breeds are intelligent but also have independent spirits. Dachshunds, like most hounds, are motivated to pursue their own agendas and Chihuahuas have strong opinions about what they do and do not like. Both breeds are known to be challenging to housebreak. Even a very reliable Chiweenie may sometimes have an accident in the house. Positive reinforcement training is the best way to gain the love, respect and fleeting attention of this little rebel. With lots of praise and fun he will be inspired to offer you his better side. With proper socialization, Chiweenies will do fine in a household with other dogs and cats. It's not recommended to walk this breed off leash even in a safe area. Make sure sufficient obedience skills have been learned before walking off leash. They may take it upon themselves to charge and provoke much larger dogs, chase squirrels and bark warily at strangers. The Chiweenie is cute and spirited little dog whose tail will wag most of the day. They loves to curl up on your lap when the day is done. This dog is best suited for an accepting household with solid rules and a laid back atmosphere. They also do best around people that love their playfulness and supreme cuddling skills.

The Chiweenie may bond more strongly with one owner than any other owner. This bond may result in protective behavior and separation anxiety.

Maintenance

The Chiweenie has a medium to low-shedding coat that is usually easy to keep clean. Feed them a high quality healthy food to prevent excessively runny eyes, extra frequent defecation and too much weight gain. They have a stocky frame and short legs so keep them active and don't overfeed. The Chiweenie needs a job to do so make sure they gets fresh air. They respond well to daily training sessions and enjoy chew toys. Some may be very picky about what type of food they will eat.

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.

Chiweenie Q&A

Ask a Question

I keep getting mixed reviews about whether or not chiweenies are good with children. I have 4 kids and want to make sure the puppy we plan to get will adapt well to us. The owner of the puppies parents says both dogs are great with kids. What should I look for when selecting my puppy from the litter.

My Chiweenie loves kids. The best thing to do is get a young one so it will get used to children. A 5 year old dog that has never seen children before may be too scared of them.

I have a 5 week old chiweenie puppy. Can she go through the night with out food or should i be waking up to feed her.

I used to raise Manchester Terriers, so I have had a lot of experience raising pups. Five weeks old is a bit too young for a pup to be taken from its mother, as they are usually still nursing at that age. So, yes, it would be a good idea to feed the pup at least once during the night. Mix a small amount of honey with lukewarm whole milk, or feed with soft canned puppy food. Don't worry about waking the pup up. It will go back to sleep after feeding. Also, be sure to keep the pup warm.

My chiweenie is only 11 wks. old and I have noticed she has small patches of what looks like hair loss. The patches seem to be around where she's scratching, top of head, a little on her shoulder area, and on her back. I bathe her every week using puppy shampoo. Is this normal in her bredline? I'm a little worried about it. Other than that, she's a very healthy dog, very well loved and taken care of! Spoiled is the best way to describe her!!

My dog had it too . Medicated shampoo helps, and also vitamins!

how old do they need to be before they can get a flea treatment? or can they get flea treatments? what is the best kind of puppy food for my 11 week old chiwinnie? Is there anything specific to caring for them a new first time owner should know?

Your puppy can start getting flea treatment now. When you start to bring your new puppy in to get his/her shots, the vet will offer you 2 different kinds of flea treatment. One is for heart worms and fleas and the other is for flea and ear mites. I would use Advantage or Frontline for now or which ever your vet recommends You can also find both products at Walmart of Target. They are little tubes filled with a oily clear liquid that you apply on your puppies back. When using either of these products, my vet told me, you'll still see flea crawling on your puppy but as soon as the flea bits your puppy the flea will die. I have used both and I still find fleas on my puppy after they have bitten him so I suggest getting your puppy flea shampoo for in between each treatment. Your only able to give your pet flea treatment once a month so the flea shampoo comes in handy when you find your flea treatment isn't working like it should be. Whats good about using the one for heart worms and flea is you wont have to give your puppy and extra pill for heart worms every month and if you decide to go with the other treatment without the heart worm medicine in it you'll have to give your puppy a pill every month for heart worms. Both flea treatments work "okay" my puppy was immune to the heart worm and flea treatment so I found the flea and ear mite worked better. When your puppy is 16 weeks old the best treatment to put him/her on is called Vectra. Vectra is a pill they take once a month it goes according to their weight and it starts to kill fleas after 30 mins after giving them the pill. You don't have to worry about bathing him/her. While the other 2 treatments I mentioned in the begging start working after 2 hours and you wont be able to give your puppy a bath as often as you would like. When using Vectra Your puppy will stay flea free for a month while the others you'll see a few fleas here and there during the course of the month. My puppy has been using Vectra for a month and I have yet to see a flea on him. So in my personal experience Vectra works the best and it is a 100% effective unlike the other liquid treatments. Chiweenies are very picky eaters and every dog is different in what food they prefer. I had to switch up my puppies food a few time before I found out witch one he liked best. I went from the most expensive brand of food to the cheapest brand of food and lucky for me my puppy hates the expensive kind. Chiweenies are a mix breed between a Dachshund and a Chawawa and they pretty much have all the similar health problems as both the breeds they are mixed with. So dont feed your puppy table food. I know its hard to say "no" but its very bad for their health like Dachshunds they are more prone to get over weight. And with that being said it can cause your puppy to have searchers and low blood sugar. It also can cause Pancreatitis which can be faital. Chiweenie puppies can be very active and love to play but they also love to snuggle up and relax with their owners too. So have plenty of chew toys for his/her and also get ready for a lap dog. They are extremely smart and easy to potty train. When I first bought my puppy he was 8 weeks old, it took us about a month and he was fully potty trained and now goes to the back door when its time to go potty. They love attention and will gravitate to one person in the household more than the others living with you. I have had previous breeds of dogs thought my life and I have to say the Chiweenie breed is my favorite so far. They are the easiest to train and have the sweetest personality. Its hard not to want to spoil them all the time because they defiantly know the way to their owners heart. They tend to be shy when they meet new people but it doesn't take them long to get used to some one new. I hope this information helps you with getting to know and caring for your new puppy.

I bought my Chiweenie from a breeder when he was 4 weeks old his name is Brex. He and my 2 other cats have been getting along since the day we brought him home I never had a problem with them getting along. I noticed he was afraid of dogs the first time I brought him to the vet there were other dogs in the office that day and they were all very friendly. I tried to get him to play or at least sniff the other dogs and he wanted nothing to do with them. He tried to hid behind my back and he started shaking a lot. He never growled at them or showed his teeth he just kept trying to run away and hid. He did the same second time I brought him to the vet. The vet has an office cat and Brex will run and hid from the dogs but the second the office cat comes from around the corner he is ready to play. Well about 2 weeks ago my boy friend found a Lab mix laying on the side of the road. It looks to us like he had been beaten and someone tried to slice his neck opened. So we have been doctoring him up and he now lives in our back yard. We named him Carter he is very sweet and loves to play with our neighbors dog. We tired to let Brex meet him and Brex put his tail between his legs, started shaking and breathing really hard. We normally would take Brex to the back yard to go to the bathroom but since he is scared of the big dog we have been bringing him in the front yard. Now every time Brex goes outside he acts really funny and keeps trying to run back inside. Instead of him going to the bathroom right away like before it now it takes him 15 to 25 mins to go. He wont even go near the front or back door anymore and really starts to shake or act very nervous when we do try to bring him outside. What can I do to help fix the issues and still be able to keep up with Brex's potty training?

You bought it from an irresponsible breeder. First off you CAN'T separate dogs from their moms until they're minimum 8 weeks. He is probably scared of them because he either has separation anxiety or he's not use to the dog

I just got my 10 wk old chiweenie and he tends to only want to be around me. When I am not home my mom will bring him down stairs with her, but a few minutes later she will find him back upstairs in my room. Is this normal for a chiweenie?

It's just because your puppy is new and if it sleeps upstairs then it feels that that is it's home. Nothing to worry about!

I have an 11 month chiweenie that I rescued from a local animal shelter who is a very picky eater. She refuses to eat dog food and will starve herself before she will eat it. I can mix some type of meat with it and she will eat it for a couple of meals, then she seems to get tired of it quickly and won't eat again until I try something different. Should I keep trying to find ways to please her so she'll eat even though it changes all the time? I do my best to get her to eat the dog food because I know it's the healthiest for her. Is this common to the breed? Can anyone recommend a dog food that chiweenies really like?

Puppy Chow, my dog loves it!
