I think it because they are a cross between a jack and a poodle.I I have had both breeds in the past and both really need grooming. Jacks have very wiry hair and poodles very curly hair, when you put both together they need brushing at least once or twice a week. When I first got my jack-a-poo I thought he should be bathed at least once a fortnight which was a big mistake, I now brush him every other day and bathe him once every 3 months. I also have him clipped every 8 weeks. In winter just to keep him comfortable. From late spring I have his coat shaved every six weeks but that is just my preference as it seems to keep him cool as the weather gets warmer. I think it depends on whether you want your doggy to look like a jack or a poodle. My preference is a Jack but with my doggy his mum was a jack and his dad was a poodle. Not sure it that makes a difference.
