Maintenance

The Pekalier\'s hair is long and silky and requires some amount of maintenance. You must brush your dog daily in order to keep them healthy and clean. It is the ears of the dog which require special attention as if not taken care properly they can catch infection hence they must be cleaned using a cloth by dipping it in warm water and then wiping the ears respectively. The nails need trimming once every three weeks and they should be bathed using a mild dog shampoo which is to be used only after proper consultation. It is also recommended to brush their teeth at least twice a week such that they may be not get any dental infection.

Ideal Environment

The Pekalier is not a very active dog. They require a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes of daily exercise to keep them happy and healthy. This necessarily does not have to be in one single sessions and may be divided into smaller sessions. The exercises can be in the form of short walks twice a day, and even a trip to the dog park does the trick, not only this, but the Pekalier also enjoys short bursts of activity and relishes the time played in the yard. It is however advised not to leave them unsupervised while playing in the yard by themselves. The dog loves being around the family, and it is not in his nature to suffer from anxiety when left alone for long intervals of time

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.

Pekalier Q&A

Is a " Luxating Patella" (dislocating knee cap) in hind leg common for Pekaliers? Our baby was graded a 3 out of a 4 for sugery yet the Vet stated to use "Gluosamire/hondroitin Sulfate Supplements" at this time, unless, our Pekalier gets lame. I am looking into a second opinion from another Vet but wanted to know if anyone else has a had this same medial issue with their Pekalier and what the outcome was, surgery and how it helped or supplements and if that helped. Thank you.

It is a common problem with Cavaliers, so I would say yes. My Cavalier had it in one knee and the glucosamine/chondroitin kept him out of surgery for three years. I also got steps for him to the couch, bed, and a ramp from the deck. It is good to keep him from jumping as much as possible.
