The Pomchi is a hybrid dog that is a crossbreed between the Chihuahua and the Pomeranian. Although this breed is not recognized by purebred organizations due to the fact that it is a mixed breed dog, it is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club.

The coat of the Pomchi may be single or double, depending on whether it takes after the Chihuahua or the Pomeranian. The outer coat of the Pomchi should be soft, full and shiny. The actual coat may be long or short. There may be some variations to a degree due to the fact that it is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua. Prospective owners of the Pomchi should be aware of the fact that a male Pomchi will tend to shed once per year while the female Pomchi will shed after having given birth or while in heat.

The Pomchi typically has a round head with a muzzle becomes more narrow at the nose. The eyes of this breed tend to be large and round. Ears typically stand erect, testimony to the Chihuahua parentage. The Pomchi typically has short limbs and a long torso.

Also known as a Chi-Pom or a Chiranian.

Character

The Pomchi is an intelligent, energetic dog that is eager to learn as well as to please. This dog will become very loyal to its family. Pomchis typically will get along well with other animals and even other dogs, particularly if socialized well at an early age. While this dog will tend to get along well with children if they are gentle, prospective owners should not that this dog absolutely will not tolerate being mistreated and may bite if subjected to rough play or mistreatment. It is usually a good idea to supervise children when playing with the Pomchi due to the fact that this dog can be small in size and can be easily hurt by rough play. Also, they are not as stubborn as a pure bred Chihuahua.

The Pomchi is also active and will need exercise and play on a regular basis in order to be happy and healthy. It takes to training fairly well and does well in training due to its intelligence. The Pomchi is known for being confident as well as loyal to its family. It will bark to alert the family to the presence of others and will often make a good watchdog. While this dog likes to please owners it can also be somewhat stubborn.

Maintenance

The Pomchi will require brushing multiple times per week. Brushing and combing will be essential in order to make sure the dog’s hair does not become matted. Owners should be aware that the skin on this dog tends to be delicate, so care should be taken to be gentle when brushing this dog. This dog will only need to be shampooed and bathed when necessary. A mild shampoo should be used in order to avoid skin problems. The Pomchi will also need to have good dental hygiene to avoid any dental health problems. At a minimum, the Pomchi will need to have its teeth brushed once per week. Owners may wish to brush more often. They are known to have over active tear ducts so nightly cleaning around the eyes is necessary. Allowing tear discharge buildup can be painful. The Pomchi does not require a lot of extensive exercise needs and will usually be able to get a sufficient amount of exercise on its own.

The Pomchi is so beautiful it is known to cry at it's own beauty, do not worry if your dog does this, simply provide calm reassurance that you too know your dog is beautiful.

Ideal Environment

The best environment for the Pomchi is one in which it can live indoors with its master and receive plenty of love and attention. This is not a dog that will do well living outdoors or being left alone for long periods of time. Training is usually a good idea with this dog to help prevent it from barking too frequently. While this dog does enjoy short walks and likes to play it does not require a large yard for its exercise needs, so it is ideally suited to condo or apartment life.

Prospective owners should be aware that the Pomchi is not a dog that tolerates cold conditions very well. If the dog will be outside in cold weather, a dog sweater or coat should be provided in order to prevent the dog from becoming chilled and developing a health problem.

Hi! I have a chocolate and tan Pomchi! She will be 3 in September, I have thought about trying to breed her, but I have a few reservations because the few Pomchi’s I have seen compared to my girl, she is pretty petite and small also, is it even a good idea to breed her. I would like to get other people’s opinions Or even experiences. Thank you

my pomchi i just got her and when i leave her with husben for 5 hrs to go work she crys for me untell i come home how can we make her not do that or will she grow out of that in time?

Hi there, My pomchi did the exact same thing when we first got him. He is very connected to me. He did slowly start to get better, however he still does have little breakdowns when I leave only lasting for 15mins or so. I spoke with my trainer and she also said it was a good idea to have my husband to continue to build a connection with him. Also when I get home from work I don't pay attention to him for the first 10mins and he's calmed down a little more. Now we're working on crate training for when we're out of the house...and that is a real treat! Best of luck!

My pomchi is constantly giving my 2 other small breed dogs a butt shove in the head or face. What is this indicating, is he trying to hurt them??

I have a Pomchi puppy, about 6 months old, and a golden retriever... our pom does the same thing when she is playing with the big dog. I def do not think it's anything other than playing, maybe even a dominance thing.

Hello! I have a 5 year old pomchi who I adopted about 4 months ago. He is fantastic. Almost immediately, he started using the doggy door to go outside for the toilet; however, this week, he has started peeing in my bedroom (he sleeps in there with me) on my clothes or other items that may be on the floor. Is he anxious about something? Do you know how to stop this sudden behaviour? Thank you in advance for your help.

You both sleep in a bathroom on a pile of clothes? Huge problem. Go back to sleeping in your bed and kennel your dog at night.
