The Rus-A-Pei is created by cross-breeding a Jack Russell Terrier and a Chinese Shar-Pei. Though it was intended to be half mix of both the parents but when they are bred for years, the percentage is not always be 50% over the generations. The dogs who have inherited the Shar- Pei tend to have a flatter and broader head with the thicker build. The muzzle of these dogs is deep and broad. The dog taking the Terrier side has rounded and balanced head and square slender muzzle. The eyes are dark and almond shape with dark rims. The ears are usually triangular that can fold towards eyebrows, and at rest, they can fold out to the sides. Sometimes ears stand erect during attention.

The Chinese Shar-Pei traits of being mute often reduce the activity level of this breed and make the intensity controlled. The breed tends to be independent and dominating. Lack of mental stimulation leads to obsessive behaviors and destructive activities.

add infoGenerally, the grooming of Rus-A-Pei does not require extra efforts and time. Bathing is occasionally required. It is important to pat dry the fur to ensure that dog has dried off. If the dog has inherited wrinkling from Chinese Shar-Pei, then moisture can be irritating and causes smelly mildew and mold. Mostly this breed has soft and short coats that are single or double layered, but some dogs may inherit Russell Terrier’s wiry coat. This type of coat requires weekly brushing but needs stripping once or twice in a year to maintain texture. Nails and teeth should also be part of regular grooming.
add infoRussell Terrier, the parent of the Rus-A-Pei, is extremely active, so this breed is also an active canine. Some activities are lowered due to the inclusion of Chinese Shar-Pei. The breed is less likely hyperactive than the Russell Terrier. It is important to take the dog for long walks. One hour of activity is sufficient for this dog. These are small dogs and can comfortably adjust in an apartment or similar place, but due to active nature, they prefer a spacious home where they can play in the yard.
