The Sharmatian, developed by crossbreeding a Dalmatian and a Shar-Pei comes across as an attractive dog with a striking personality. This dog has a large to medium size and can live for ten to twelve years. Owing to its affectionate, affable and placid nature, it can become an excellent family pet. If you’re thinking about bringing a dog into your family who’ll love you forever and always stay by your side, then you can take a chance with Sharmatian. As it is an offshoot of the Shar-Pei and the Dalmatian, it demonstrates both the good and bad traits of the dog breeds.
add infoIf you’re looking for an intelligent, sprightly, and obedient dog that’ll warm up to your family, then you can consider the Sharmatian. The Sharmatian happens to be friendly, energetic, lighthearted, and affable. He’ll take great pleasure in spending time with your family and show an interest to be the center of attraction. They get along perfectly well with other dogs, household pets, and kids if trained early for socialization. The Sharmatian can get grumpy and irritable if left alone for long so ensure you spend sufficient time with it. Sharmatians don’t bark much but may yelp forcefully if and when they see a stranger at the doorsteps.
add infoThe Sharmatian has susceptibility towards certain disorders and diseases like hip dysplasia, deafness, urolithiasis, kidney issues, and mast cell tumors. The dog could be somewhat vulnerable to cataracts, patellar luxation, laryngeal paralysis, and Dalmatian Bronzing Syndrome. Make sure you take the pet to the vet once every five months.
add infoThe name ‘Sharmatian’ is a portmanteau of ‘Shar’ (from Shar-Pei) and ‘matian’ (from Dalmatian). Reared as a watchdog in China, the Shar-Pei is regarded as a very old breed of dog. Following the imposition of communist rule in China, the Chinese Communist Party levied a steep tax on owners of dogs. The imposition of a heavy tax led to the near extinction of the Shar-Pei. However, a petition by a Hong Kong based dog breeder hugely contributed towards the breed’s reemergence. The American Kennel Club, a reputed dog breed registry, recognized the breed in1992. However, the origins of Dalmatian, variously called the ‘carriage dog’ and the ‘English coach dog’ is shrouded in mystery. They mostly accompanied the peripatetic tribe of Romany during their routine peregrinations since the ancient times. It is alleged that the Dalmatian got its name from the coast of Dalmatia, one of the four historical regions of Croatia. In the US, Dalmatians are admiringly called ‘firehouse dogs’ owing to their natural ability to rescue people from burning structures. Recognition for the dog breed from the American Kennel Club came in 1888.
add infoSince the coat of the Sharmatian sheds very sparsely, you won’t have to worry too much about grooming it. Brushing its coat once in a week will keep the dog clean and tidy. The dog can do fine without regular bathing so bathe him only when it’s extremely necessary. Use a shampoo recommended by the vet as the Sharmatian has vulnerability towards skin issues.
add infoThe Sharmatian makes an ideal house pet for families having children and living in houses having a backyard.
