I have an 8 week old male boxer. I work from 8:30-5:30 during the week, have been leaving him in the crate, but I do come home at lunch to take out, feed, and play for 45 minutes. I also have a roommate who is home most days to take him out and play for a few hours while I am gone. He seems to cry almost the entire time I am gone, so I am thinking about getting a pen for him to play in instead of his crate. But, I am worried that him being able to use the bathroom in the pen in the kitchen will completely ruin any potty training progress. Any advice or suggestions?

Boxer puppies will do this from time to time depending on the animal. Don't worry though, the crying will wear off after some time. I don't recommend that you let the puppy roam in a pen until sufficiently house broken. Stay strong, these lovely dogs have a face that will melt your heart in a second. Let him cry now, or you may be crying later...

Don't want to be unhelpful but I can't imagine being able to house train a puppy if left alone hour on end. Puppies do their business practically every hour. Have four dogs of my own but have never left a puppy on its own most of the day. You might have a problem there. You need to be there to take it out whenever it needs to go for it to learn otherwise it will think it is ok to go in the house. Sorry.
