Shiranian Q&A

My husband and I just got a 2 1/2 (almost 3 year old) boxer. She is a little shy. Her previous owner said she takes up with women a little better than men. She seemed nervous or unsettled when we got her home. Will she ever take up with us? How should we approach her to make her more comfortable? We got her dog treats and food. She didn't want any of it.

My female boxer was 3 months old when we got her and she was very scared of all men and some women. We went to a trainer and asked what we should do to help her with her fear. she said just take it slow and try to not treat her or baby her when she is showing those scared actions. she seemed to warm up to me within 3 weeks and after about 14 months she came around to my hubby. We let her come to us, we never pushed her. If she is scared of one or both of you try sitting down on the floor with a peice of block cheese(dime size) and with no eye contact, let her come to you. don't touch her, just let her touch, sniff and look at you. next time let her come to you and offer her a slow pet and a soft good girl. keep doing it and let her sit down and slowly she will come around. don't give to much cheese, change it up once in a while or just sit there and talk softly to her don't raise your voice because it seems to get a scared responce and it will take even longer. It took longer for my hubby because he was gone for weeks at a time and wasn't around very often. the more time spent with her, the faster she will learn to trust you and know you are not going to hurt her. Good luck, I have 3 boxers and they are the most amazing dogs i have ever had. i have 5 kids and our second boxer was the scared one and she is amazing with our kids and she protects the kids first if ever someone where to come on to the farm. our kids were 7, 4 and 2 when we got our female reeses and 2 kids came after we got her and she is just so patient and watchfull over them. good luck
