Akbash Dog Q&A

My chiweenie is only 11 wks. old and I have noticed she has small patches of what looks like hair loss. The patches seem to be around where she's scratching, top of head, a little on her shoulder area, and on her back. I bathe her every week using puppy shampoo. Is this normal in her bredline? I'm a little worried about it. Other than that, she's a very healthy dog, very well loved and taken care of! Spoiled is the best way to describe her!!

You may need to further investigate why she is scratching. Most dogs are allergic to wheat and corn products. I changed my puppies food and he no longer scratches.

Check with your vet about a thyroid test...our Dachshund had low thyroid hormones which causes them to lose hair...we had to give him thyroid pills all his life, but that was easy since it started in puppyhood! I have heard that hypothyroidism is common in dachshunds. GL!!

I just took my 9 week old Chiweenie to te vet today for the exact same thing. The hair loss is a type of Mange from mites that normally live on a dog's skin, but have gotten out of control due to the pace of growth. It is a genetic condition and is recommended that you do not breed your dog as it will be passed on. My vet is treating my puppy with antibiotics as well as special shampoo that will kill the mites on the skin.
