Australian Shepherd Q&A

I am a small hobby breeder and a owner of Aussies for 13yrs and I recently purchased a female pup whos ears started to stand up and flop over when she was 12 wks old. Now she is 6 months and they are standing straight up. My question is will all her litters have prick ears if breed or is it just something that depends on each individual puppy? Ive heard its ok for Aussies ears to stand up but not sure.

I am surprised that as a breeder, you don't know this. Yes, the "prick ear" can be passed on, and no, it is not acceptable in Aussies. However, some breeders still breed this type, with the explanation that the ears can be "trained" to stay down with either the tape or glue method. (Specific type of glue called Tear Mender, NOT just any glue.) My aussie has one prick ear, the other is normal. Even though I tried to get his ear to stay down with the glue, it never worked. I personally would rather not see this type of dog being bred. It just dilutes the breed. (Just my opinion.)
