(Bergamo Shepherd Dog, Cane da Pastore Bergamasco, Bergamaschi, Bergamese Shepherd) The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient breed of sheepdog that possesses excellent balance, agility, and speed. They are of medium stature and have a well-proportioned body that is rustic in appearance. They are solidly built and compact with great resistance and strength. The powerful look of the Bergamasco Sheepdog is further emphasized by his distinctive coat that is long, thick, and shabby. The coat of this breed is characterized by the mats or flocks that form across the body. These mats start from the spine and reach down to the level of the flanks. They grow more and more each year until they reach the ground. A thick curtain of hair covers the eyes of this breed and serves as a protective visor. The coat color of the Bergamasco Sheepdog may be any shade of gray, silver, or coal. Since ancient times, the Bergamasco Sheepdog remains unchanged.

They form strong bonds with other Bergamasco Sheepdogs and show great respect for each other. They have a balanced character and are reliable and friendly. Constantly watchful and alert, this breed is always observant and attentive to their surroundings. They are not aggressive, but they make excellent watchdogs because they are leery of strangers. Because of their strong protective instincts and patient, loving temperament, Bergamasco Sheepdogs are great with all children and form intense, loving relationships with their families. They will only be aggressive if they detect a serious threat to their family. They are able to perceive each person that enters their home on a separate level, so they will judge strangers on an individual basis. The Bergamasco Sheepdog is a wonderful companion and friend, and he is a great pet for everyone. They are very complex dogs and possess an amazing mix of qualities and character.
add infoThe Bergamasco Sheepdog is a very hardy breed with few health concerns. They typically live for 13 to 15 years. They can have anywhere from 6 to 10 puppies per litter, but the average is 8.
add infoThe origination of the Bergamasco Sheepdog dates back to ancient times. The breed was developed from the stock of shepherds and cattle dogs that spread from the Orient to the Western world throughout their periods of migration. As sheep were sold, dogs were exchanged. The founder of the Bergamasco Sheepdog discovered its most suitable cradle in the territory of the Alpine Arc. Sheep herding was developed extensively in this area and in the areas of the Po Basin of Piedmont and Lombardy (where the dogs were taken for wintering). The Bergamasco Sheepdog was exclusively selected for its working abilities, and the breed’s bloodlines were kept a secret by the shepherds for many years.
add infoBergamasco Sheepdog puppies have a soft, fluffy coat that begins flocking as early as 8 -9 months. The flocking stage lasts for approximately one year. When the dog is 2 to 3 years old, the coat will settle into a flocking pattern that will continue to grow throughout the dog’s life. The Bergamasco Sheepdog’s coat is composed of the layers. The first layer is the fine, dense, oily (non-greasy) undercoat that forms a protective waterproof layer. The second coat component is the long strands of harsh hair that are referred to as “Goat Hair”. The last coat layer is the woolly, fine, soft top coat. The combination of these different types of hair forms a pattern that weaves together to create the flock. Once the Bergamasco Sheepdog’s coat is fully flocked, little attention or grooming care is needed. Occasionally brushing and bathing are sufficient methods of upkeep. The Bergamasco Sheepdog does not shed like other breeds, but it is not unusual to find a stray dog hair or two, especially during the puppy stage. This breed is considered by many to be hypo-allergenic.
add infoThe Bergamasco Sheepdog is best suited to cooler climates. Because of their dense coats that protect them from harsh weather conditions, the Bergamasco Sheepdog does not mind sleeping outdoors. This breed needs a house and is not accustomed to a small household or apartment-style living situation. They enjoy spending lots of time outdoors and will exercise on their own terms. Daily walking or running around with children are ample forms of exercise for this breed. The Bergamasco Sheepdog needs exercise and space to run around outdoors to be happy.

can you keep you their coats short? Yes. But be careful to cut their hair too short because their skin is very sensitive and prone to rashes and scabbing. Because of their natural thick coat their skin is usually protected from harm so when cutting make sure to be EXTRA careful to not get to close to the skin. Also make sure they do NOT get external parasites (fleas, tick, etc) because scratching and biting irritates their skin and causes them to scab. When their coat is long is nearly impossible for blood sucking parasites to get to their skin because of the thick oily protective 1st layer coat (except for places like the inside of ears or near nose) And last but not least be aware you will be asked what kind of poodle mix your dog is. |
