Bluetick Coonhound Q&A

We have an almost 11-year old blue tick hound and we have had him since he was 12 weeks old, adopted from Petsmart. He has had a mean streak most of his life -- can't get near his food or a toy or disturb him lying or sleeping. He will show his teeth and growl and bite. He has growled down after our puppy, sometimes we don't know why. He will growl and show his teeth and bite if you are near him and someone with food. Has anyone else encountered this problem with their blue tick? We are thinking of putting him down before a guest gets bit and we get sued. Also, he has been on thyroid medicine for 8 years. Is that a blue tick problem?

when we first got our bluetick he had food aggression. we could never go around him and we had to feed him seperate from my parents dogs just in case, he was a stray when we adopted him. but after we moved out we broke him of it. you just have to show him whos boss, yell and raise your voice. if you have the voice it really works. now my cat eats his food and he just waits for her to get done. i would not put him down. and if he does bite a guest maybe he just does not like him

He is showing aggression because you allowed him to show aggression. When he growls and you back up and/ or leave him alone, he wins. So of course he's going to do it again- it worked! You must convey to him that behavior is not acceptable.
