Character

The Cão de Castro Laboreiro is a fearless flock guard with strong protective instincts. They are highly intelligent and brave, and they are very dominant. For this reason, the breed is sometimes aggressive with people it does not know. They are loyal, docile, and devoted to their owners. They are reliable and trustworthy with children in their family. They are very suspicious of strangers, and they will only obey the commands of their owner. They will only bark if they feel there is something wrong. The Cão de Castro Laboreiro requires a dominant owner. This breed can sometimes be difficult to control, and it is not recommended for first time dog owners. Heavy-handed or overly harsh training does not work with this breed.

The owner should be dominant in the sense of persuasive, strict, straightforward and reliable in his/her "yes and nos", Never use harsh physical punishment and always reward in gestures, snacks, and short, high pitched words. Criticism should be uttered in a deeper voice and short growls.

Maintenance

-

In the older days, they shared their food with their shepherd-owners. The CCL will accept all kinds of food, never overeats, and will stop eating when they have had enough. Their fur is practically self-cleaning. Their ears may require frequent cleaning.

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.
