Get him examined by your vet. Lyme disease will cause a lot of joint pain. Ask your vet if he should be tested for LYME disease. He may also have luxating patellas (not that common in GSPs but not out of the question.) He may also have hip dysplasia. This is a hereditary disease where the hip joints aren't properly formed and the dog develops painful arthritis as a result of this. You vet may have a pain medication that will make him more comfortable. Sometimes when people come to me looking for a pet, they say my prices are too high and they don't want a show or field trial dog. All my breeding stock has been xrayed and cleared for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and other health conditions. The extra cost will give you a healthier dog who could very likely save you money in future vet bills. It is not unusual for my dogs to be competing in field trials at age 10. They can do this because they have good hips. Katrin Tazza AKC Breeder of Merit
