Golden Retriever Q&A

I have a 12 wk old mini dachshund. He doesn't tell me when he has to go pee pee and I keep finding #2 in hiding spots. I take him out like every 30 minutes and he does pee outside. I praise him a lot when he does it outside. He is in a kennel when we leave for the day and he still always potty in the kenel. He always goes out side right before we leave and he is only in the kennel for maybe 4 hrs at the most. How do I get him to stop going inside and in kennel, #1 and #2?

He's very young and small to hold it still. Just keep being patient. If he's going inside his kennel, he really can't help it. Also train him to go on training pads in the meantime (it's easy, they are treated to encourage going potty on them)

I've had doxies all my life. They are stubborn. My current boy was the strongest willed. Just be patient. Watch for his signals. Walking around sniffing ,siting by doors, staring at you, etc.Once he decides to do it your way, you'll have it made. I restricted mine to the linoleum kitchen floor with puppy pads when I went anywhere or was busy. It took 2 years before I could leave him roam the house all the time. Like I said, he was a long exception.

yes, i also agree with the answers given already. stubborn, they will test you and yours is still so very young. even when u think they have mastered the task they will "surprise" you now and then! you sound like u r doing everything right! your doxie will know if you are disappointed too, so i would pout and be mad at him when he goes in the kennel as well as the praising when he goes outside! (you don't have to be "mad" too long-he'lll know right away!) and then he'll want to please you. hope it gets better :D it will!! i guess buy extra laundry detergent in the meanwhile!

12 weeks is nothing...this is just the start! My dachsund is now a year old and oh so stubborn! Routine is the only thing that has helped me and trust me I tried EVERYthing anyone suggesed, he was just trouble! I feed him once a day now rather than 2 because it really helps to cut down on the number of poos and he is absolutely fine on one meal. So he goes out for a wee first thing, then has breakfast and remains in his crate for 15 mins after eating then I take him out and he does a poo immediately. He then does a wee every few hours when I take him out. At all times when I am not in the house he is in his crate, he has grown to like it and has his toys and his water in there and his bed and feels safe, (he did hate it at first but he was pooing everywhere and eating carpets/lino etc so I had no choice...you have this stage to come!) When I am in the house he doesn't have the run of it, he stays in the same room that I am in so that I can see when he heads to the door, this has become his tell tale sign that he needs to go out, if I don't notice it he will go ahead and go anywhere, hense why he stays in the same room as me! This routine was hard work at first but now he really is getting it, even at my parents and grandparents house he has 'asked' to go out recently so it's paying off! I was about at my witts end 6 weeks ago, the crate has really helped save me! We have had many other breeds of dog and had no problem with house training them, doxie's are just very very stubborn, keep at it and you will get there with routine, nothing else works!!! Good luck!
