Golden Retriever Q&A

I have a 7 week old dachshund puppy that itches so bad he whines. My husband took him to the vet for a check up and asked about the itching and the vet checked him for "pests" (i.e. worms, fleas, ticks) he told him our puppy did not have pests and it might be a food allergy.. He did not seem to itch until 3 days after we got him home. The vet told my husband to keep an eye on it. I am planning on giving him a bath this afternoon and see if this helps with the scratching. How would I know if it was an allergy to grass, or laundry detergent, or food and etc. He does not have a rash or red spots or anything like that. If he might be allergic to laundry detergent, what detergent could I use?

try the laundry detergents they make for babies (Dreft? Woolite for babies, etc.)

we add flax seed oil to our dog's food. check it out at heath food store. it worked great for us.

I too had a dog that scratched himself all the time. It took years before I finally realized he was allergic to many foods and grass! Make sure you are feeding a quality dog food with no by-products of any kind. I switched to a high quality food and this solved the majority of his itching. Because he was also allergic to grass, I gave him Benadryl in the Spring & Summer months.

It took me much reading on Internet to fix my dachshund's "dandruff" and itching.; Shampoo salicylic acid 2% in comnbination with Soluilized sulfur 2% cured her. I also add Lipiderm fish oil to her food daily. Her coat is beautiful now - shiny and free of flakes. I highly recommend one or both for your babies.
