Golden Retriever Q&A
The simple answer is no...sort of. They are two separate breeds but they do share some ancestors. The Goldie was bred from a wavy coated retriever and a Tweed water dog, in the later 19th century, the breed was then developed via sporting dogs such as the Irish Setter to form the ideal hunting dog. The Lab doesnt have any wavy coat in the breed, but the ancestors it would share include bloodhounds which are flat coats. As far as I know the Lab also has working dogs in in the breed which is why they tend to be a little more...rotund lol, they are sturdier in that way. So the answer is yes and no.
