My 2 1/2 year old dachshund has one runny eye. It is her right eye and it looks like a little sleep in her eye but it is ther all day no matter how many times I wipe it away and her eye is a little bit red.

I hope this gives you some comfort. My doxie has watery eyes and he gets 'crusty' along his nose like a chihuahua or shih-tzu might get. My vet has always said that he has allergies of some kind. My doxie doesn't seem to be bothered by the runny eyes and it has turned into a bonding thing for me to keep his face clean. He's also more than happy to let me know when he doesn't want it cleaned, too.
