I have a black standard poodle that is a female I have never seen her in heat yet. She is over a year old now, could this be that she is very clean and always grooming herself that i would not notice?

Larger dogs tend to mature later than a smaller dog might. However, it would be a good idea if you consulted your veterinarian.

My Standard poodle was more than a year old the first time she was in heat. Several months older. She matured late, but the Vet said she was fine and everything's normal now. But you should check it out if it takes too long...
