Lhasa Apso Q&A

I rescued an english mastiff male puppy 2 months ago. When I brought him home he was severely emaciated, weak, flea infested and very skittish. His last vet visit (at 17 wks) he weighed 31lb. At that time my vet told me he was still under weight but greatly improved. He is also alot less skittish and just a little fireball! His ribs are much less noticable and he is now able to eat a larger amount of food at a feeding since his tummy is used to getting regular meals. He is currently on large breed puppy food. Is there something I can give in addition to his puppy food to help him gain some more weight? Obviously I want him to be as healthy as possible and to grow as he should.

I was in a similar situation when I rescued my mastiff, although she was 1 year old when we got her. When I talked to my vet about her gaining weight he said as long as you are feeding her a good kind of dog food (he suggested IAMS) she'll be fine. I asked specifically about supplements to get her weight up and I was told that almost all dog foods have the same thing in them the supplements do. I've had my girl Roxie for 2 years now (she's 3) and I've been able to get her from 65 lbs. when we got her to 98 lbs. She gained weight very slowly, which is healthier. We were told that she will always be small. As long as he is happy, is eating well, and is healthy the weight will come. This growth chart has helped us quite a bit since we adopted a new baby.. he is 20 weeks and 56 lbs. It doesn't match up with the chart but he's defiantly no small baby :) I hope this helps. http://www.mydog8it.com/mastiff_great_dane_puppy_growth_chart.htm

your mastiff should be fed a giant breed puppy dog food for the for year to 18 months..you do not want to add a lot of weight too fast this is going to cause joint and hip problems. regular puppy food is too high in fat and protein...so make sure you buy a giant breed puppy food. in not time your pup will fill out don't rush it. these dogs continue to grow up till the age of 3.5

Raw feeding is what makes them gain weight fast. Our breeder advised raw feeding, which we did for a number of years. This helps them gain weight to the appropriate level.
